Jay and Ashley discuss which crop to plant first, with Dr. Shawn Conley who leads the University of Wisconsin Soybean Research Program.
Dr. Shawn Conley, UW-Extension Soybean Specialist, can really identify with farms that struggled under odd growing conditions in 2024. Conley's own research plots statewide were hit with the same wet conditions that limited spring planting and overall plant development. Still, there's something to be learned even in a challenging year. Conley visits with Pam Jahnke about some of the unique take aways he's finding in his plot research across the state, funded by the Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board. He's also finding new information about incorporating more cover crops as weed suppressors in fields. Conley plans to share some of these insights during the 2025 WI Corn/Soy Expo, slated for Feb. 6-7 in Wisconsin Dells.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pam Jahnke sits down with Dr. Shawn Conley, UW-Extension Soybean Specialist to discuss his Wisconsin soybean harvest observations so far. Conley says he's pretty confident the state's overall yields will be down compared to a year ago, and cautions operators to be careful with settings on combines to make sure they're getting every bean they've grown. Conley also says the dry weather conditions the state's dealing with could mean an elevated Soybean Cyst Nematode (SCN) population going forward. He says research shows in times of moisture stress, the nematode will actually produce more eggs that can be harbored in the soil until the next soybean crop shows up. Fortunately, the Wisconsin Soybean Marketing Board will pay for up to four SCN test samples, per grower, to try and get those numbers now. Conley also noted that despite reduced yields, the annual Wisconsin Soybean Yield Contest has received over 100 entries for this year's contest. Winners will be recognized during the 2025 Wisconsin Corn Soy Expo in Wisconsin Dells. To follow the latest harvest updates, go to coolbean.info. About Silkroad Ensemble: Silkroad creates music that engages difference, sparking radical cultural collaboration and passion-driven learning to build a more hopeful world. Yo-Yo Ma conceived Silkroad in 1998 as a reminder that even as rapid globalization resulted in division, it brought extraordinary possibilities for working together. Seeking to understand this dynamic, he began to learn about the historical Silk Road, recognizing in it a model for productive cultural collaboration, for the exchange of ideas and tradition alongside commerce and innovation. And in a radical experiment, he brought together musicians from the lands of the Silk Road to co-create a new artistic idiom, a musical language founded in difference, a metaphor for the benefits of a more connected world. Today, these Grammy Award-winning artists seek and practice radical cultural collaboration in many forms, creating and presenting new music, teacher and musician training workshops, and residency programs in schools, museums, and communities. Silkroad has recorded seven albums. Sing Me Home, which won the 2016 Grammy for Best World Music Album was developed and recorded alongside the documentary feature The Music of Strangers, from Oscar-winning director Morgan Neville.
