Reminiscence Learning with Fiona Mahoney is a moving insight into the essential work carried out by an amazing dementia charity. Having worked as an occupational therapist in the NHS, Fiona set up Reminiscence Learning in 2001, becoming a registered charity in 2003. Since then, she has created the inspirational Archie Project to help children understand dementia more clearly. Furthermore, Fiona has helped train many healthcare professionals to better manage dementia patients. In addition, Reminiscence has set up carer support groups, and runs respite activity sessions, using memorabilia as a fundamental component of each session. The charity has won multiple awards and continues to be a beacon of light for those with dementia and their carers. For example, The Archie Project was one of the first to take children into care homes creating a vital link between generations. It plays a vital role in helping young people understand the condition so much better. To boost the visibility of the charity, Fiona enlisted national treasure Angela Rippon as its patron. What's more, Richard McCourt, one half of TV duo Dick and Dom, became an ambassador. Discover how she successfully recruited two such well-known celebrities. Naturally, Fiona has to continually drive a comprehensive fund-raising strategy. This year, Reminiscence will be holding a 'Jailbreak' from Shepton Mallet prison. Ten 'convicts' are already lined up for this unique event in May, timed to coincide with Dementia Action Week. Our guest tells us why this event is going to have huge impact. As a subject matter expert, Fiona has contributed to key research into dementia and was part of a group that wrote a Commonwealth Report showcasing successful models of dementia care. To demonstrate how successful The Archie Project has become, it was included among twenty projects idenitifed across the commonwealth as role-models for future programmes. We are, of course, The Business Awards Show, and so Fiona explains why awards have been so vital to the development of Reminiscence Learning. Her Charity Champion award at the 2024 Best Businesswomen Awards was a real triumph, and as she explains, totally unexpected. Our discussion highlights the case for optimism in dementia care, and how a small charity can have a massive impact. Fiona shares her learnings from her years running the charity, and for anyone seeking help with a dementia patient, or wanting to know more, this is the best possible entry point.       {2:52} Why Fiona started Reminiscence Learning. {8:08} The Archie Project. {15:30} Linking children with care homes. {17:34} Reminiscence's celebrity patrons. {20:26} The importance of awards to the charity. {23:56} Creating unique fundraising events. {27:04} Learnings from over twenty years of running a charity. {29:18} Contributing to a commonwealth report on dementia.     Connect with Debbie at: https://thebusinessawardsshow.co.uk Connect with Fiona: https://www.reminiscencelearning.co.uk/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ReminiscenceLearning/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/reminiscence_learning/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/reminiscence-learning/ Jailbreak: https://www.reminiscencelearning.co.uk/events The Archie Project: https://www.reminiscencelearning.co.uk/archie

The Showering name is synonymous with both innovation and tradition in the world of cider for the past 187 years. In this Episode 425 of Cider Chat, Nick Showering shares a bit on his family's cider-making roots that stretch back over 400 years and in the past 180 years in the town of Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England. Nick Showering A Storied Legacy in Somerset The Showerings have been crafting cider in Somerset for nearly two centuries. It all began with a small pub, The Ship Inn, where cider was made and served locally. As generations passed, the family expanded their influence, eventually creating Babycham—a sparkling perry that revolutionized the beverage industry and played a key role in shaping British drinking culture in the 1950s. The playful brand with the signature reindeer brought a fresh, elegant option to women in a male-dominated pub scene. Hello Triple Vintage! Triple Vintage is made with 100% cider apples all grown in Somerset. The featured apple in this cider is Dabinett. Solera, the technique of blending different ferments, in this case three different vintages of high-tannin apples, creates a delectable cider that balances depth of flavor with an elegant finish for the Triple Vintage. Enjoy the Triple Vintage which is sold throughout the UK in fine dining establishments or online (link below) in a large stemmed red wine glass. Serve slightly chilled. The Triple Vintage comes in 375 ML bottles. What's Next for the Showerings? With their sights set on continuing to produce fine cider and Nick Showering clearly enjoying the challenge, time will tell. For now it appears it is all about maintaining a foot in the door of the ever increasing “fine cider” category and the prospects of introducing a new generation of drinkers to the possibilities of high-quality cider…making that very good news for the industry at large. While schools and universities boast urban legends alongside ghosts, prisons tend to be more like hospitals. You find tales of hauntings, but little in the way of folklore. It's probably due to the concentration of human life in one place - and the brutality that runs alongside it. Haunted prisons somehow don't seem so surprising. Due to matters of space, our main focus is on just three prisons: Joliet Prison in Illinois, Shepton Mallet in Somerset, and Barlinnie Prison in Lanarkshire. Is it Alien Abduction? Parallel Universe? The Large Hadron Collider at CERN? Or just a game of Fortnite?   One of the mysterious disappearances we talk about is the disappearance of old Owen Parfitt from his sister's front porch in the English countryside isn't nearly as famous as, say, the disappearance of Amelia Earhart in 1937, but it's even more mysterious. In the summer of 1763 (or thereabouts—accounts differ on the exact year), while living with his sister in the town of Shepton Mallet, the paralyzed 60-year-old Parfitt simply disappeared. He couldn't have walked off, but even the farm workers in the field across the road from the porch where Parfitt was sitting didn't see anyone come or go. One moment he was there, the next, poof. We also briefly talk about the Missing 411 mysteries. Although we don't go deep into the Phenomenon we talk a little about the work by David Paulide.

What are the challenges in distinguishing between these conditions when they present in general practice, and how can they be addressed? After diagnosing a patient with either COPD or heart failure, how important is it to also look for the condition?

Bex Band was not an outdoorsy person, but one day she decided to hike the length of Israel. Whilst there she noticed very few women walking the 1000km National Trail so, on her return, decided to do something about it. She set up Love Her Wild, an organisation that encourages women to become more adventurous. The community now has over 25,000 members. On today’s walk, she takes Clare for a loop around King Alfred’s Tower near the Stourhead Estate, not far from Shepton Mallet in Somerset. As they walk, Bex discusses her forthcoming book; why women need encouragement and support to access the outdoors; and the other adventures she’s completed including kick-scooting the length of the United States.
