I started this episode in a bit of a grumpy mood because rekordbox/ Mac issues meant that all of latest downloads that I was so looking forward to playing remained trapped on my Mac and not my USB. American Indian Month is now underway. The American Indian Cultural Corridor in the Phillips neighborhood of south Minneapolis is hosting a large event Wednesday to kick off the month. And one of St. Paul's historic neighborhoods is again part of the official city streets. Hannah Wilson discusses innovation in financial education with 3 expert guests. The House special committee's report was released in the final days of 2022 with the recommendation that the now Republican-controlled Congress bar Trump from ever holding office again, as well as be criminally prosecuted. Neither outcome is likely as the events of the first week back in session show the GOP is still completely in thrall to the cult of Trump, whether via supposed "moderates" like Marjorie Taylor Greene and Kevin McCarthy or "extremists" like Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert. Chris Hedges is surprisingly cheery for someone who has, by his own admission, “a dark view of human nature.” When we met for this conversation at Substack's office in San Francisco, he was full of smiles and good humor—at least during the times we weren't discussing death and destruction. He had just come from the gym, a habit that borders on a fixation for him, since he works out as a way to deal with the trauma from years of covering war in some of the world's most dangerous conflict zones: the former Yugoslavia, El Salvador, and Iraq, to name a few. It has been 20 years since his groundbreaking book War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning came out. Its force was so powerful that it was quoted at the start of Kathryn Bigelow's 2008 film The Hurt Locker: “The rush of battle is often a potent and lethal addiction, for war is a drug.” At the time, Chris was a bureau chief for the New York Times, covering the Middle East and the Balkans, but he quit that position following criticism of a speech he gave denouncing the U.S. invasion of Iraq. He has been publishing in independent media ever since, first at Truthdig and later with an interview show, On Contact, on Russia Today (RT). YouTube wiped out the archives to that show when it removed RT from the platform following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. “They're embracing censorship, let's be clear,” Chris says. It is becoming more and more obvious that after 233 years, our Constitution could be significantly upgraded. If we want to have an effective and democratic form of government we should probably be thinking about how to democratize our Constitution. Confronting this reality will not be easy for many. But perhaps we should begin by asking ourselves the following questions:What are the undemocratic features of our Constitution? What features would make it more democratic? And, can we as Americans amend, change or even replace our Constitution?But there is also another urgent and more immediate crisis to contend with.
