Lake trout are on life support in Lake Michigan. Every year, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spends tens of millions of dollars raising and stocking them. But what if there was another way: genetic engineering. Could it be used for conservation?

Genetic modified organisms or GMOs have transformed the entire food industry and global health on a massive scale. And with the recent advent of CRISPR technologies and more complex genetic engineering methods, the new landscape of GMO 2.0 has arrived. Although they are a testament to our scientific progress, they could be doing more harm than good to our bodies. Corinna Bellizzi sits down with global thought leader and author Jeffrey Smith, who presents the dangers of GMOs and genetic engineering. He explains how agrochemical/agricultural biotechnology corporation Monsanto continues to find legal loopholes to integrate toxic chemicals into their food products. Jeffrey also talks about the difference between hybridized and GMOs, why microbes are the hardest species to genetically engineer, and how eating organic food delivers way more benefits than you could imagine. About Jeffrey Smith:As a global thought leader on the health dangers of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) for over 27 years, Jeffrey Smith has authored 2 bestsellers, directed 5 documentaries, delivered 2,000 lectures and interviews in 45 countries, trained 1,500 speakers, and organized more than 10,000 grassroots advocates. Jeffrey has counseled world leaders on six continents, and his meticulous research presented at medical conferences inspired thousands to prescribe non-GMO and organic diets. The success of the GMO education movement he pioneered is measured in part by the 48% of world consumers who acknowledge GMOs are unhealthy. Taking on GMO 2.0 Jeffrey and IRT are now sounding the alarm about new genetic engineering techniques, such as gene editing. Unregulated, GMO 2.0 can cause health and environmental disasters. The most urgent danger comes from genetically engineered microbes. Jeffrey is stewarding a global effort to prevent their release. It's time for a buzzworthy good time as we get into a movie that changed and really cut into the horror genre: James Wan and Leigh Whannel's Saw (2004)! Character analyses, Jigsaw's motives, Danny Glover being typecast, the legacy of the Saw franchise and how well Saw would've worked if it was a standalone film rather than a series—these are just some of the "rules" discussed in this game of an episode, as well as a hello from one of our interns! Well, wouldn't you know it? Another season finale! Season six has been quite sickening if we don't say so ourselves but it wouldn't have been such a success without our wonderful guest stars–give it up for AJ and Jonne from D180 Podcast (A Dry Squeeze), Eric Thompson (Downward), Sasha Banks (Buggin') and Brandon Evans (Picky Eater)!!! We had so much fun and can't wait to add to our list of guest Critters in future episodes. For our season 6 finale, we basically do an episode of Everything Wrong With for a film from way back in Jared's memory banks: 1997's vicious lizard sci-fi horror Aberration. Everybody's a critic and our red pens were compulsory this time around as we tried to leave no scale unturned. Lake trout are on life support in Lake Michigan. They rely on intense breeding and stocking by federal fisheries. There was a breakthrough last summer, though, that could help bolster the lake trout's recovery. A geneticist successfully mapped the lake trout genome: an outline of the fish's genetic makeup. The genome will help biologists understand why some “strains” of trout have a higher survival rate. But could it also be used to create a sort of super-trout? And is that a good thing? Or is conservation-based gene editing a step too far? Featuring: Mark Walton, Roger Gordon, Chuck Madenjian, Seth Smith, Marty Kardos and Kim Scribner. George knew that Dirty Harry makes a speech about not being sure whether he fired five shots, or six at the end of the movie (but he had no idea that speech at the end was a callback to an earlier speech.) And Travis thought this was the one where Harry Callahan says "go ahead... make my day..." (but that's a different one.) Turns out, neither Travis nor George had actually seen Dirty Harry before and Dan was tickled to show it to them both! What the heck is Transactional Favor acting? Can Dan make it through an entire episode about Dirty Harry without mentioning the Zodiac Killer? Does Dan really bring Frankenfish into the conversation? and Nail Gun Massacre? Is Travis waxing nostalgically about a different Dirty Harry movie again? Wait, is George cheating on the guys? Tune in to find out! And stay tuned for a tease of what is to come this Spring! The best part of your Monday morning has arrived: the latest podcast of the last broadcast From The Basement! Jason and Shawn dig into the new Canadian serial-killer thriller The Silencing, which hits VOD and Digital this Friday. The film, from director Robin Pront, stars Annabelle Wallis as a small-town sheriff, and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as a reformed hunter on the trail of a killer of women. It's dark and gritty stuff, but is it ideal viewing if you want a late-summer chill? Stick with us! And stick with us you shall, as The Basement boys take on a slew of movies old and new. They touch on such favourites as Gravity, Jaws 3 and Echoes of Fear, and take on newer -- or new to them -- releases like John Henry starring Terry Crews, Hollows Grove featuring the great Lance Herniksen, and Frankenfish... starring, well, Frankenfish! Oh, and they do battle with recent streaming series The Speed Cubers and Inside the World's Toughest Prisons. If this doesn't intrigue you to push play and enjoy, nothing will. So just do it, like the old shoe ad used to say. You won't be disappointed!

We’re headed into the swamps this week to talk about FRANKENFISH! This giant killer fish flick is directed by Mark Duppe(Spawn), written by Simon Barrett(You’re Next, The Guest, Blair Witch) and Scott Clevenger and stars Tory Kittles, K.D. Aubert, Donna Biscoe and China Chow. Frankenfish is loosely based on an actual snakehead fish infestation in Maryland circa 2002. The movie, however, is about Medical Examiner Sam Rivers as he travels back to the swamps where giant fish start picking off the residents of a houseboat community. There’s white guy dreads, voodoo subplots, some mafia guys or something and a heart-eating! It’s really entertaining!

Southwest Virginia has seen a decline in coal and tobacco—two industries that once boomed in the region. Could hemp be a way to boost the local economy? Ryan Huish (University of Virginia’s College at Wise) and Michael Timko (University of Virginia) are collaborating on an Industrial Hemp project to explore hemp’s potential for repairing lands damaged by coal mining. Plus: When the Food and Drug Administration approved the production and sale of genetically modified salmon in 2015, some consumers were alarmed by the prospect of consuming “Frankenfish.” But are all genetically modified foods dangerous? Eric Hallerman (Virginia Tech) makes the case for accepting some of them. Also: When a person’s time is taken up by the needs of daily subsistence due to poverty, environmental concerns can recede as a priority. When we talked to Camellia Moses Okpodu for this interview, she was at Norfolk State University (Xavier University) investigating ways to get more disenfranchised minorities and people who are economically at risk interested in environmental activism. Later in the show: In July of 1975, news spread that workers at a factory in Hopewell, Virginia had been poisoned by an insecticide called Kepone. Greg Wilson (The University of Akron) was a Virginia Humanities Fellow and historian who traces the environmental crisis that followed with the discovery that the James River and marine life were saturated with the chemical. And: What if there was an app that worked like GoogleMaps, but for marine animals? Sara Maxwell (University of Washington - Bothwell) is using satellite tracking to help fisheries avoid catching animals like whales, turtles, and sharks while they’re hunting for other fish.

AI technologies are really human issues. Sylvester Johnson (Virginia Tech) says we humans must decide for ourselves how to live in a world where intelligent machines and algorithmic systems are deciding issues of medicine, electricity, prison sentences and who is eligible for public assistance. Also: Google uses computer vision algorithms to filter out unwanted pornographic images from our search results. Alex Monea (George Mason University) explains how this filter is sometimes applied overbroadly, censoring LGBTQIA+ discourse and sex education. Later in the show: When the Food and Drug Administration approved the production and sale of genetically modified salmon in 2015, some consumers were alarmed by the prospect of consuming “Frankenfish.” But are all genetically modified foods dangerous? This week we are streaming Frankenfish (2004) directed by Mark Dippe on Amazon. Grab your drinks and snacks for some over-the-top mutated snake fish attacks on the bayou and hilariously drunk commentary.
(Nov 8, 2018) Martha Foley and Curt Stager continue their discussion of trout varieties in Adirondack waters. One variety that is found in streams and lakes in the region is the splake, a hybrid of the native strains of lake and brook trout. While some refer to them as "Frankenfish," fishery managers like the hybrid because it grows quickly, but does not breed well in the wild, which makes it manageable in a stocking program.
Frankenfish wins the poll! Mike and Lisa go over the award winning, spellbinding, p.o.s that is Frankenfish. They go over emails , announce the next poll and attempt comedy.
Welcome to the swamp! Today, as demanded by the Twittercats, we have the privilege of watching the 2004 CGI bloodfest: FRANKENFISH. We recount our previous twitter poll saga, give a play-by-play of our most recent one, and Dave tells the thrilling story of his first encounter with Frankenfish (based on a TRUE story). We each give our takes on THE BABYSITTER, talk babysitting movies, and Chris tells us about BETTER WATCH OUT. Then we really get into it and talk about SPAWN, Michael Jai White, unwanted horror sequels, Simon Barrett, drinking on the podcast, Adam Wingard and DEATH NOTE, the Snakehead Fish Incident, FUNNY GAMES, and eventually, even the movie. It’s a day-drinking good time on the bayou in this very loose and very special episode of the TEXCHRIS DAVESAW MASSACRE! Continue reading →
It’s back to 80s camp scaredy cats! Today, by twitter poll, listeners vote that we watch the xtra-terrestrial creature flick: XTRO. Dave tries to undermine the twitter poll in favour of FRANKENFISH, but is thwarted by Chris. We talk about the camp value of 80s practical effects and 90s CGI. Dave watched STRANGERS: PREY AT NIGHT and talks home invasion movies, and Chris tells us about watching THE LODGERS, and using an actual haunted filming location. We chat about midnight madness, SILENT HILL, and women dominated casts. Then we do our best to piece together exactly how Xtro works and changes, talk about awkward lip shots, and monster births. We discuss ALIEN facehugger rip offs, egg dispensing people, snake salads, living toy soldiers, and awkward family dynamics. So plug in your headphones. It’s one of the stranger episodes of your favourite horror movie podcast, the TEXCHRIS DAVESAW MASSACRE! Continue reading →

Christian and Ian ponder what it would be like to be in a loveless marriage with Kevin Bacon. For this episode, we are joined by a guest, Dash Kwiatkowski, to discuss the Native American ghost movie, THE DARKNESS, and attempt to uncover just some of the many problematic elements. For the middle segment, Dash shares his Horrigin Story and discusses his earliest horror memories and why he is still a fan of the genre. Finally for our Movie from the Crypt segment, Dash selected the 2004 SyFy original movie, FRANKENFISH, and we discuss the art of bad movies. We also discuss Paul Reiser, getting Wendy's delivered to your house, and whether it was Taye Diggs or Mekhi Phifer in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. We are now on Stitcher!
