We take a look at the recent, tragic final act of a doomsday cult in Kenya that left 448 dead and another 613 missing in March of 2023. How did cult leader Paul Mackenzie, pastor of Good News International Ministries, convince his followers to starve their own children and then themselves to death? And how did the Pentecostalism he based his messages in contribute to his insane and deadly teachings? In this episode, I share more about a quilt I call LIKE FAMILY. It's part of the Southern White Amnesia Collection, which explores the kinds of stories that Southern White families tell one another, or maybe more importantly, the ones they don't tell one another about their own family history. You may have heard me talk about other pieces in the same collection on SEAMSIDE before, and if not, I'd encourage you to check out some of those episodes. So far, we've got SILVER DOLLAR, SNAKE HANDLER, OUR CHILDREN, and ONUS // ON US.In this SEAMSIDE conversation, we explore: ① an old Southern family burial ground ② why the phrase “like family” can often describe a one-sided view of relationships ③ a moment from THIS HERE FLESH by Cole Arthur RileyWHY LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE? A well-known “snake hunter” is showing “signs of recovery” after a freak accident involving a highly venomous tiger snake. Melbourne snake catcher Mark Pelley was left fighting for life last week after a routine job went horribly wrong. Mr Pelley's equipment broke during the capture, allowing the snake to turn its head and latch on to his hand. Perth's own snake guru Mad Pauly talks to Millsy and Karl about the inherent dangers of the job, as well as the particular type of person it entices.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, I share a collection of stories behind SNAKE HANDLER, a large banner I made featuring a writhing white snake. It's really a three-part story about wrestling, specifically wrestling with identity, privilege, and role in the struggle for racial justice. I share personal reflections on understanding and confronting my privilege, recommending reading suggestions, sharing two strategies I use to address biases and hurtful statements, and encouraging us to take active roles in addressing racial inequality.Get more free resources with this episode with SEAMSIDE EXTRAS! Episode 5 is here and she is deadly! Because this week, we will be discussing deadly animals kept as pets. Jackie tells the story of snake-handler Jamie Coots, who didn't necessarily keep his snakes as "pets" but used them for religious purposes in his church the Full Gospel Tabernacle in Jesus Name. Although Coots gained notoriety for his show "Snake Salvation" on National Geographic, his snake-handling practices had deadly consequences. Welcome back to A Riverdale Runs Through It! This week we phase in and out of talking about Season 2, Episode 2 of Riverdale, the show without the monsters, monster hunters, or gay angels (Although Kevin is an angel so we may be in luck). We talk a lot about the Supernatural Finale and how bonkers that is, but also Cheryl gets blackmailed, Jughead gets in bed with The Snake Handler, and Archie buys drugs and guns. Kiss Tomorrow Goodbye as we dive headfirst into Divine Horsemen's "Snake Handler" LP! . . . . . YOU DON’T KNOW MOJACK is a podcast dedicated to exploring the entire SST catalogue, in order, from start to finish. During the podcast we will discuss all the releases that are part of our core DNA, as well as many lesser-known releases that deserve a second chance, or releases that we are discovering for the very first time (we actually don’t know Mojack!). First and foremost we are fans, and acknowledge that we are not perfect and don’t know everything – sometimes the discussion is more about a time, place, feeling, personal experience or random tangents, and less about the facts (but we will try to get to the facts too). India Ramey is a singer/songwriter from Birmingham, AL. She is the granddaughter of a Sand Mountain bluegrass and gospel musician and career piano tuner.Blasting twin barrels of Americana noire and southern-gothic songwriting, India Ramey fires on all cylinders with her national debut, Snake Handler. Pentecostal churches, broken households, crooked family trees, forgotten pockets of the Deep South, and domestic violence all fill the album's 10 songs, whose autobiographical lyrics pull from Ramey's experience as a young girl in rural Georgia. Intensely personal and sharply written, Snake Handler shines a light on the darkness of Ramey's past, driving out any lingering demons — or snakes, if you will — along the way. Recorded March 2018 See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What begins with "The Snake Handler" and other morality tales, quickly devolves into cash directly threatening the virus itself, envisioning futures based on pasts that don't exist, and evaluating the present based on goals that are not being accomplished.

Much like the town of Riverdale, we're moving RIGHT along after this shooting. And no better way to help the transition than our guest, Antonis Varkaris! This episode is a lot of the spiralling into weird and dark places! Betty's going full dark, no stars, and is is hell bent on saving Pop's (even though a day or two of being shut down wouldn't ruin a small business), and Veronica's helping because she just wants to GET AWAY FROM HER DADDY! Meanwhile, in the wake of Grudy's death (yay!) Archie's PTSD is in full force, and instead of getting real help (GAY) he dives deeper into self sabotage (#JUSTCEFORARCHIE). On the backdrop of FP facing 20-40 years for a crime he should ultimately get WAY less time for, and Jughead consults with the Snake Handler for help (who doesn't help really?) Cheryl's also coming out and coming UP! Will Betty save Pops? Will Archie ever gets his life together? WILL CHERYL EVER GIVE ANYONE MERCY?! Not really, but it happens anyways, LOL ABSOLUTELY NOT, and NEVER!!! My blazing fast and fun talk with writer Cody Goodfellow, (Mystery Meat, Rapture of the Deep, & the upcoming Snake Handler w/J. David Osborne,) is the perfect example of his unique mind and the type of playful energy he brings to everything. We cover a ton of ground in this engaging and hilarious Part 1, discussing Hollywood myth vs. reality, making something fresh in a rehash soaked era, buying what we are sold growing up and the vast unknowable mysteries/frustrations of being an indie creator. But naturally we also get down to why we can't give that up, as well as pushing ourselves to do good work in the classical sense, defending good grammar and editing ourselves until our eyes bleed, or something like that. Listen to know all!! Plus, I grabbed a few minutes with our pal Mike Dubisch to setup their creative relationship, which plays nicely into Cody's thoughts on the matter later in the episode. It's a different mix and a deeper story than usual, and without a doubt a great listen! Just a few days until the LIVE Podcast Tag-Team at the Lost Church in San Francisco.
