What exactly is a political commentator and what qualifies a person to be one?
Brand reputation management specialist, columnist, political & social commentator Solly Moeng, also a regular contributor to the show last night announced on social media that he will be joining Herman Mashaba's ActionSA in the 2024 election where he will be leading ActionSA's International Relations portfolio See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
ActionSA president Herman Mashaba announced the party's national chairperson Michael Beaumont, Eastern Cape provincial chairperson Athol Trollip and party spokesperson Lerato Ngobeni are among the candidates the party will be fielding to represent it in the National Assembly. Mashaba was unveiling his party's 'Team Fix South Africa' in Johannesburg, where he noted that if given the mandate to govern, an ActionSA administration would reduce the number of national government departments to about 20, and eliminate the position of deputy minister in all departments. He said the chosen candidates represented some of the best minds and skills the country had. He announced Beaumont as the party's Team Fix South Africa's member for Infrastructure and Public Enterprises, Ngobeni as Team Fix South Africa's member for Home Affairs and Trollip as Team Fix South Africa's member for Land and Agriculture, and as the party's leader of Executive Business in Parliament. The list also includes Dr Tsholofelo Maforah, Dr Tutu Faleni, Solly Moeng, Pieter Scribante, Mpho Madisha, Dr Kgosi Letlape, Nothukhela Mahkohliso, Dereleen James, Advocate Julie Seaton, Thuli Khoza, Mohammed Rafeek Shah, Nompumelelo Edward, Sello Lediga and Alan Beesley. "They represent some of the most patriotic South Africans who are committed to undoing the legacy of the current cruel and uncaring government. Those who form part of 'Team Fix South Africa' have already served this country in the public and private sectors for many years, and are now ready to take that contribution further," Mashaba said. He noted that his party would reduce the benefits Ministers received, including "excessive" catering and travel allowances, it would slash the budget for VIP protection, and ensure that Ministers were always transparent about the actions they took. He added that at a time of fiscal constraint and a cost of living crisis that is ravaging the nation, the perks of Ministers should be slashed before any other budgetary cuts. He said leaders must set an example for fiscal responsibility. "With their announcement today, we want to demonstrate to the South African people that we are not a party hallmarked by career politicians with no real-world experience in the portfolios they are meant to lead," he said. He committed that an ActionSA government would be appointed based on merit, and not political connections. "Whether ActionSA governs with a majority, or in coalition, we will be uncompromising on ensuring that we appoint the best persons to Cabinet positions who have real-world experience in the portfolios they are supposed to lead. We will not engage in cadre deployment, nepotism and cronyism. We will only appoint people on merit and with impeccable track records with a commitment to clean governance and service delivery," he said. While other political leaders might make space for compromised leaders within their ranks, Mashaba said ActionSA was unwavering in its commitment that the party's leaders must be above reproach. He explained that all candidates had undergone an extensive and rigorous selection process, adding that the party had spent countless hours interviewing candidates and scoring tests to ensure that ActionSA only sent the best people possible to Parliament to possibly fill Cabinet positions.
After three years of consultations, The United South Africa Movement (TUSAM) has launched the South African People's Charter and the Charter of Citizens' Obligations. In this interview with BizNews, TUSAM's Solly Moeng says “this system is built to protect the ANC (African National Congress)”, and that it has to change “because these institutions that we built at the dawn of our democracy, with everybody thinking that they will stand between us and hell, have shown to be weakened, to be repurposed, to serve the interests of politicians who are criminals. We need to create buffers.” He also calls on citizens to inform themselves because “people still get taken for granted by political entrepreneurs on the basis of their poverty and on the basis of their lack of knowledge”. TUSAM - a non-partisan civic movement - will endorse only those political parties that pledge support for the People's Charter.

One of the speakers at the upcoming People's Summit for a People's Charter will be an ex-South African executive assistant Carmel Foster, who has lived in the United States (US) for almost two decades. Foster is credited for getting a law passed that validates and dignifies workers' rights after she lobbied extensively following her own experiences as a domestic worker. Foster, who has authored The Awakening based on her experiences, stresses the importance of “being able to have the guts to get up and say, I want change”. Foster, who is excited to collaborate with TUSAM says: “I feel a deep responsibility to give back and share the knowledge and experiences I've gained while residing in one of the world's superpowers…Together we can work on enhancing digital infrastructure to create employment opportunities and drive social economic development.” - Chris Steyn

The board of state-owned defence manufacturer Denel this week skipped a scheduled meeting with parliament's standing committee on public accounts - SCOPA - leading chairperson Mkhuleko Hlengwa threatening to summons the Denel board should it fail to appear at it next meeting. This is the latest in a string of instances that individuals, organisations and the executive have failed to account to parliament with no consequences. Last month ANC MP Mosebenzi Zwane failed to appear in House to apologise for State Capture malfeasance. It remains to be seen what, if any, steps the parliamentary joint ethics committee takes against other parliamentarians named in the Zondo Commission report as far back as March 2022. There are suggestions that the absence of standards of accountability and the fact that portfolio committees are not independent, are the reasons parliament is failing in its constitutional mandate to hold the executive accountable. Others say Parliament relies on the very Government departments it oversees for information on which to base that oversight, and that public participation in some parliamentary committees is woefully inadequate leading to percepetions of an institution that appears to be sleeping on the job. Joining us for a discussion on this is Dr Ongama Mtimka, a political analyst from the Nelson Mandela Univeristy and Brand reputation management advisor, Solly Moeng.
17.05.23 Pt 2 - Solly Moeng, a brand reputation specialist, columnist, and part-time lecturer, sits down with Gareth to discuss his life overseas, his feelings about the political landscape in South Africa, and his plans moving forward after 2024.
Meet the man behind the political commentator! Solly Moeng - a columnist, expert in brand reputation, and regular contributor to the Burning Platform - joins Gareth in-studio to discuss his life overseas as a part-time lecturer and full-time South African. Due to political reasons, he has been chased out of the country and is waiting for his chance to return. Solly divulges some interesting information about his personal life and more in this special interview.
This week, ministers and top officials from the Judicial Inspectorate of Correctional Services (JICS), the South African Police Service (SAPS) and the Department of Correctional Services (DCS) faced questions from MPs in the Parliamentary Committee on Justice and Correctional Services on their investigations into Thabo Bester's escape. As officials scrambled to answer, what emerged was a string of events laced with clear characteristics of gross dereliction of duty, incompetence, corruption and passing the buck. On Friday Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi also provided fascinating insights into Bester's background announcing that although Bester is South African, he was never registered on any official system. In our Sunday Morning Discussion we are looking at how the series of oversights, blunders and errors in this case could expose and put at risk the reputation of South Africa's criminal justice system. For this conversation we spoke to Specialist Investigator Mike Bolhuis as well as Brand and Reputation Expert, Solly Moeng.
