Join us as Ben, Dessy, Tiago, and Rose continue on their journey to play every Ace Attorney game! A place where we support Women's Wrongs, and also take 20 minutes to let Tiago rant about van Zieks. That's it, that's pretty much the whole podcast this time. Well, we also discuss Shamspeare's hateability, some new weird theories that will definitely come to pass, and all the ways you can obtain strychnine (not really). We'll finally get Soseki off the hook -- for real this time, and finally catch up to the main timeline. Right? Right?! Join us as Ben, Dessy, Tiago, and Rose continue on their journey to play every Ace Attorney game! Time to go back, to a time when Soseki Natsume was still in London, and another tragedy befell him! We finally meet two NPCs who briefly showed up in game 1, William Shamspeare and Adron B. Metermann, who add some levity to the grim, poverty-stricken streets of London. Soap, gas meters, dances of deduction, and Dessy calling Soseki her "poor little meow-meow" are the order of the day, plus some of our usual off-topic shenanigans. And yes... your favorite: Rose and Tiago predictions! We get pretty out there, this time... Mike Collantes started his culinary career inside Orlando's Fashion Square Mall, but he now counts himself among the exclusive ranks of Michelin-starred chefs. Collantes earned his Michelin Star in 2022 for his omakase restaurant Soseki in Winter Park. “After the Michelin Star, we're seeing international clientele and guests, as well as our local guests, but really put us on the map for what we've been doing here in Winter Park,” he said. The same year he won his Michelin Star, Collantes closed his first restaurant Taglish, a fast-casual Filipino concept that had three locations at its height. “As we got busier with the fine dining restaurants and other restaurants, our lease came up, and we decided to close that venture down, never to really open it again,” Collantes said. However, with the success of his fine dining restaurant, Collantes has had the ability to open several other restaurants around the greater Orlando area, including Sushi Saint, which was awarded a Bib Gourmand by Michelin. The award highlights high-quality food at reasonable prices. “Last year, November, we opened up our doors (to Sushi Saint),” he said. “There (was) no hand-rolled temaki bar in town. So it's a different way to eat sushi, utilizing still the same quality that we do at our fine dining and just making it a little bit more casual.” In addition to Soseki and Sushi Saint, Collantes is rapidly expanding his culinary empire. He recently opened a sake speakeasy, Bar Kada, next to Soseki. He is also planning to reopen Taglish inside the food hall that used to be The Hall on the Yard, which is now under new ownership. “Taglish is Tagalog in English — so good representation of not just traditional Filipino food. It's really the upbringing of everyone who's migrated to America and I would say it was my connecting point back to my culture, which, you know, I grew up here in the States,” Collantes said. Collantes also plans to open a French restaurant there as well, Chez Les Copain. The chef said it is something the area is lacking in. “We saw a big decline in French restaurants (in Orlando) in the past couple years. A lot of them have just closed up shop,” he said. In addition to all of his work in Orlando, Collantes is starting to work on some international ventures. “I've been doing consulting for the past year, year and a half, with other brands, and it brought me to this new concept called Kaimana, which will be opening this fall in Dubai,” he said. On the latest episode of Florida Foodie, Collantes talks more about the opportunities he's gotten since earning a Michelin Star. He also talks about the struggles that many restaurants are dealing with now as costs rise. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

It's only been a short time in London, but we're already into the second real British case for Ryunosuke! But he's getting a small taste of home, as he's defending another Japanese study tour student: Soseki Natsume! Soseki, the real life author guy! After giving the crew a bit of a history lesson on him, we dive into dealing with Sholmes again, revealing the lies of the Garridebs, and discussing how Tiago and Rose feels about Iris. Lastly, we tangent a bit (as is our wont), and also possibly form a new bit. A bit that I'm definitely going to flub up at some point, because it's all about me reacting as fast as possible. Orlando is stepping up its game. To outsiders, Central Florida might just look like a bunch of turkey legs and Mickey ice cream bars. But in the past decade, O-town has become home to some pretty top-notch eateries. And the powers that be are starting to take notice. In 2022, the prestigious Michelin Guide began awarding stars to Florida restaurants. Among the first was Soseki Modern Omakase in the leafy Orlando suburb of Winter Park. The dining room has just 10 seats, and the Japanese-inspired, locally sourced dinner is always chef's choice. That chef is Mike Collantes. In addition to owning Soseki, Chef Mike works as a restaurant consultant and interviews fellow chefs on his podcast, 86 The Podcast. In addition, he was recently a contestant on the cooking competition show Morimoto's Sushi Master, which you can watch for free on Roku.Chef Mike recently chatted with me about his decision to open an eatery with only 10 seats, the ripple effect of restaurant awards and a hack for sourcing better ingredients for your next at-home sushi night.Related episodes:Food Blogger Ricky Ly on Orlando's “Tasty Chomps”Are the James Beard Awards Snubbing Florida?Yee Farms Brings Chinese Vegetables and a “Sense of Pride” to Boynton BeachWriter Charlie Crespo on 3 Food & Drink Trends Coming Your Way in 2023Chef Greg Baker on Mental Health: “It's Okay to Not be Okay”

Today's poem is by Musō Soseki (夢窓 疎石, 1275 – October 20, 1351), a Rinzai Zen Buddhist monk and teacher, and a calligraphist, poet and garden designer. The most famous monk of his time, he is also known as Musō Kokushi (夢窓国師, "national [Zen] teacher Musō"), an honorific conferred on him by Emperor Go-Daigo.[1] His mother was the daughter of Hōjō Masamura (1264–1268), seventh Shikken (regent) of the Kamakura shogunate.—Bio via Wikipedia Get full access to The Daily Poem Podcast at dailypoempod.substack.com/subscribe

Please be aware the stories, theories, re-enactments and language in this podcast are of an adult nature and can be considered disturbing, frightening and in some cases even offensive. Listener Discretion is therefore advised. Welcome heathens welcome to the world of the weird and unexplained. I'm your host, Nicole Delacroix and together, we will be investigating stories about the things that go bump in the night, frighteningly imagined creatures, supernatural beings and even some unsolved mysteries and all sorts of weirdness. So, sit back, grab your favorite drink, and prepare to be transported to today's dark Enigma.... And on today's Dark enigma well, you guessed it, we have another listener suggestion, and this one is very exotic I had a ton of fun researching, so I hope you guys like the story! So, with that said, we will still be playing our drinking game and as you know, the drinking game is only for those of us that are at home and have nowhere else to go tonight. The choice of libation, as always my darlings, is yours, so choose your poison accordingly… Alright, now for the game part how about every time I say Soseki that will be a single shot and every time I say Samurai, that will be a double shot. Now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today's dark enigma… so don… your best Kimono and Obi, or if you prefer your samurai armor as we dive into today's tale of Mysterious Flesh Eating Revenants and Specters from Japanese Folklore A type of entity that is very pervasive across cultures is that of the flesh-eater, the wraiths and ghouls that lurk in the night to skitter about among the shadows and feed off of humans. Nearly every culture in the world has some form of this grim legend, the most instantly recognizable being vampires, but that is only just scratching the surface of how deep the macabre lore goes. The country of Japan, too, has its own creepy and bizarre legends of pale, fanged entities that come forward out of the night to feast on the bodies of the dead. One very frightening type of carnivorous revenant from Japanese folklore is a type of flesh-eating ghoul known as the Jikininki, or also Shokujinki, which ominously translates to simply “human-eating ghost.” According to the lore, these creatures lurk about old temples, cemeteries, and abandoned ruins near human settlements, where they emerge at night to feast upon the remains of the dead, greedily devouring any remains they find, but never feeling satiated and eternally hungry. They are said to have the power to mesmerize people and to instill a primal fear in those who look upon them, yet mostly avoid human beings, preferring to go about their grim deeds unseen.
Modernity arrived in Japan, as elsewhere, through new forms of ownership. In A Fictional Commons: Natsume Soseki and the Properties of Modern Literature (Duke UP, 2021), Michael K. Bourdaghs explores how the literary and theoretical works of Natsume Sōseki (1867–1916), widely celebrated as Japan's greatest modern novelist, exploited the contradictions and ambiguities that haunted this new system. Many of his works feature narratives about inheritance, thievery, and the struggle to obtain or preserve material wealth while also imagining alternative ways of owning and sharing. For Sōseki, literature was a means for thinking through—and beyond—private property. Bourdaghs puts Sōseki into dialogue with thinkers from his own era (including William James and Mizuno Rentarō, author of Japan's first copyright law) and discusses how his work anticipates such theorists as Karatani Kōjin and Franco Moretti. As Bourdaghs shows, Sōseki both appropriated and rejected concepts of ownership and subjectivity in ways that theorized literature as a critical response to the emergence of global capitalism.

This episode starts out with Amy and Janine talking about Masaoka Shiki (1867-1902) and the poetic reforms that took place from 1868 during Japan's transition from the Edo to the Meiji period. It was a time when Shiki (and his friend Natsume Sōseki), was influenced by Western literary styles and culture. These effects are reflected in Shiki's haiku, tanka and prose. Beichman's literary biography Masaoka Shiki: His Life and Works (Cheng & Tsui Co, 2002) delves into Shiki's influence on poetry, his invention of the tanka series and the publication of his poetic diaries. Janine also discusses the differences between haiku and tanka (waka) and their variations.Janine then details her path to discovering feminist poet Yosano Akiko (1879-1942) and tells how she came to the decision to focus on this particular poet to write a literary biography. Embracing the Firebird: Yosano Akiko and the Birth of the Female Voice in Modern Japanese Poetry (Univ of Hawaii Press, 2002) is the result. Janine talks about Akiko and her relationship with nature in poetry and feminism. Beichman reads a poem from Yosano's collection "Tangled Hair" included in her book.See University of Hawaii Press for indexes for Embracing the Firebird:Introduction by the AuthorFirst Lines of PoemsNext, Janine charts her relationship with poet Makoto Ooka, and how she started writing for his magazine which later led to him asking her to translate a book of his poems. The book was originally published by Catydid Press and later Kurodohan released a second English edition called Beneath the Sleepless Tossing of the Planets. Read a review by Christopher Blasdel of Sleepless Tossing of the Planets here.Janine also discusses Makoto Ōoka, how she became involved translating his poetry and how she chose which to poems to include in the anthology Ori Ori no Uta.Lastly, Janine reveals who her favorite Japanese poets and poetry books are.Unfortunately, Janine's book wasn't near release at the time of the podcast recording, but her latest endeavor is the translation of Well-Versed: Exploring Modern Japanese Haiku (Japan Library/JPIC, March 25, 2021). Hundreds and hundreds of books have been written about him and thousands and thousands of academic articles published. Often regarded as one of the country's representative 'national authors' - a man whose face adorned the 1,000 yen note between 1984 and 2004, and whose works have been a staple of school textbooks for decades - Soseki has come to symbolise Japan's past struggles with modernisation and westernisation. Under intense government pressure to become Japan's leading expert on English literature and imbued with a self-described mission to produce a revolutionary 'theory of literature', Soseki succumbed to paranoia and anxiety in his mid-thirties. He later wrote that the entire Japanese nation had been forced into the collective equivalent of a nervous breakdown, having to assimilate several centuries of Western civilisation in the course of a few decades. - Join my Facebook Group Meditation Mindfulness Yoga Mantra https://www.facebook.com/groups/642191676459430 - Here my short stories about Kindness (I giorni della gentilezza- Paperback - Italian version)- https://tinyurl.com/3vfud2c9 - Here my book Learn Māori Culture and Proverbs (paperback) tinyurl.com/6zmvz9tt - Version with Full Color Images - www.amazon.com/Learn-M%C4%81ori-…1621334435&sr=8-3 - Poster Maramataka: tinyurl.com/pht4easb - Here my book dedicated to Lo-Fi Music (ebook and paperback), tinyurl.com/r2d69dyb - on Amazon USA, UK, INDIA, JAPAN, GERMANY, BRAZIL and other countries. - Here my book Black Book Note www.amazon.com/BLACK-BOOK-NOTE-i…32&s=books&sr=1-1 - Here my book with illustrated philosophical short stories (ebook and paperback), https://tinyurl.com/mfyd4vk7 - on Amazon USA, UK, INDIA, JAPAN, GERMANY, BRAZIL and other countries.
