The Norwegian bark Prince Arthur was traveling in ballast from Valparaiso, Chile, to Esquimalt, British Columbia, for lumber on the stormy night of January 2nd, 1903. The ship ended up striking an offshore reef 10 miles south of Cape Alava on the sparsely populated north coast of the Olympic Peninsula, eventually broke apart, and its crew of twenty men was thrown into the choppy sea. Just two people managed to make it out alive. Twelve of the victims' bodies were found and buried in shallow graves on the shore with the assistance of the local settlers and Natives.A granite obelisk named the Norwegian Monument will be erected in commemoration of the fallen sailors a short time later by a delegation from the Norwegian community in Seattle. The bodies would quickly be moved to a shared cemetery on the bluff overlooking the wreck site, which can be visited today, though its quite a hike in. This tragic incident is just one of the many that have happened on the Evergreen State coast, which has long been referred to as the "Graveyard of the Pacific."A special thank you goes out to Al Hirsch for providing the music for the podcast, check him out on YouTube.Find merchandise for the podcast now available at:     https://washington-history-by-jon-c.creator-spring.comIf you enjoy the podcast and would like to contribute, please visit: https://www.buymeacoffee.com/EvergreenpodIf you have any questions, episode ideas you'd like to see explored, or just have a general comment, please reach out at Historyoftheevergreenstatepod@gmail.comTo keep up on news for the podcast and other related announcements, please like and follow:https://www.facebook.com/HistoryoftheevergreenstatepodcastFind the podcast over on Instagram as well: @HISTORY_EVERGREENSTATEPODCASTYou can also find the podcast over on YouTube:http://www.youtube.com/@historyoftheevergreenstatepodThank you for listening to another episode of the History of the Evergreen State Podcast!

During the early part of the sixteenth century England should have been ruled by King Arthur Tudor with his wife Catherine of Aragon as Queen. Had the first-born son of Henry VII lived into adulthood, his younger brother would never have become King Henry VIII and married - and divorced - Arthur's widow, and the subsequent history of England would have been very different. In this edition of Not Just the Tudors, Professor Suzannah Lipscomb talks to Dr. Sean Cunningham, author of Prince Arthur: The Tudor King Who Never Was, in which he surveys Prince Arthur's life and assesses what type of king he might have become. This episode was edited by Thomas Ntinas and produced by Rob Weinberg. In part two of this week in Tudor history, historian Claire Ridgway talks about Walter Ralegh (Raleigh) being given permission to colonise foreign lands in 1584; a disagreement over the wearing of vestments in 1566 which led to a pamphlet war, protests and ministers losing their parishes; a Tudor earl who saved the day for Henry VIII during the 1536 Pilgrimage of Grace rebellion, and the burnings of three Protestant martyrs in Essex in 1555. This led to the founding of the colony on Roanoke Island, also known as the Lost Colony.   26th March 1566 - Matthew Parker, Archbishop of Canterbury, and Edmund Grindal, Bishop of London, summon 110 ministers to Lambeth Palace to get them to pledge their willingness to wear vestments. 37 of those ministers refused and a pamphlet war broke out.   27th March 1539 - The burial of George Talbot, 4th Earl of Shrewsbury, at St Peter's, Sheffield. In politics, being neighbors doesn’t mean being friends. The struggles between the Tudors of England and the Stuarts of Scotland shaped the power dynamic of the two countries and affected the politics of Europe as well. The inevitable mixture of power and personality with the key players in this group make their battles a struggle for personal as well as political survival. So choose your side—Team Tudor or Team Stuart—and let’s get ready to rumble. When Henry Tudor took the English throne, he knew he had his job cut out for him: create a dynasty and get other countries around the world to accept him as the King of England. One way to create alliances and demonstrate the growing status of the Tudors was to arrange marriages with prominent royal families. Toward that end, Henry VII arranged two marriages: the marriage of his son and heir (at the time) Prince Arthur to Princess Katherine of Aragon in 1501 and the marriage of his daughter Princess Margaret to King James IV of Scotland in 1503.We usually focus on Arthur and Katherine, as it gets the Henry VIII marital merry-go-round started. But the marriage of Princess Margaret and King James IV is the one that would ignite the Tudor/Stuart rivalry and lead to power struggles and politics that would reshape England and Scotland for years to come.

The First State Bed of Henry VII & Elizabeth of York October 1485 - January 1486 Its iconography reveals a very specific late medieval royal language portraying the reversal of Adam and Eve's sins by redeeming monarchs who are making a mutual gesture typical of a pledge of marriage, thus crushing the three symbolic evils of Royal Psalm 91, a theme also used by the late fifteenth-century French monarchy. There is none of the typically Italianate character found in sixteenth-century furniture, but the diaper posts match those used in the court arts of Edward IV, and the wall-joinery of Henry VII, by the evidence of four recently- discovered posts matching this bed, with a 'hR' cipher and fleur-de-lys. The bed's five royal arms and six single roses are those of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, who were described in terms of redeemers after civil war, and the profile portraits resemble their physiognomy. As symbols of fertility abound, it can only have been made for the marriage of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York at Westminster Palace on 18 January 1486, before the birth of their heir Prince Arthur in September that year. The bed's proportions precisely fit the design of the mural in the Painted Chamber Westminster, against which state beds were set until 1512. This exceptional object escaped the Commonwealth destruction of royal property and chattels because it was taken to Lancashire in 1495, where it influenced the early sixteenth-century Lancashire school of joinery. Its discovery near Huddersfield in 1842, by George Shaw, a copyist who did not understand its origins, only makes sense in this demonstrable historical context. And its obfuscation into the twenty-first century is due to the fact Shaw's smaller, simply varnished and illiterate copies were passed off as the beds of northern aristocrats seeking their family heirlooms. Shaw wanted to hide it, and kept the front crest in his house while the bed eventually wound up in a hotel in Chester, lost in plain sight. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/allthingsplantagenet/support

She becomes Princess of Wales, but when her husband Prince Arthur dies suddenly, the throne seems lost to Catherine. However, she claims her marriage was never consummated and that therefore as a virgin she may set her sights on the new heir, the charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry who will one day rule as King Henry VIII. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Aug 25, 2018 at 4:21pm I was having a difficult time coming up with a topic for this week's podcast. I reached out to my followers on Facebook and a couple of them mentioned that they would be interested in finding out what got me interested in The Tudor dynasty in the first place. I thought it was a fantastic idea and so I ran with it. This episode begins talking about Henry VII and the Battle of Bosworth as well as Elizabeth of York and leads up to the birth of Prince Arthur. I discuss my genealogy, my DNA, favorite programs and so much more. If you really want to get a feel for who I am and what drives me then you'll love this episode. *side note - I discovered later that I am NOT related to the person I mentioned. It was a bad hint. (You'll know what this means after you listen) As always, I say thank you to all my patrons and to those of you who have supported over the years. Thanks again! A very special thank you to Nathen Amin for allowing me to share the quote from his social media account.  -- Written by: Rebecca Larson Voiced by: Rebecca Larson Produced by: Rebecca Larson Music Credits:  Suonatore di Liuto Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 Licensehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/

Women can possess the kind of beauty that was his and still be taken seriously, but not men -- or so it seemed to the beautiful youth. Is it any wonder that he chose to wear particolor and play the clown? This strategy went well for him for a time--being underestimated has its advantages. But when Harlekin decided to become a Rose Knight and serve the forces of Prince Arthur de Sansal in the Kingdoms of the East to fight against the Forces of Darkness, the proctors of the Kingsguard looked at his fair skin and rosy cheeks, at his suit of creamy white and blushing red, and chuckled. Good Queen Katherine - Exploring the story of a possible saint? The understanding of marriage and the care of those who have been divorced and remarried has dominated a lot of discussion in church (at the Synod in Rome) and in state (with the marriage referendum last year). One person who is held up as a model for Catholics of fidelity to marriage no matter what is Katherine of Aragon. On this weeks programme we have an interview between Canon John Baker of Peterborough Cathedral and John about the cathedral and of course the story of Queen Katherine. The interview hears how the Spanish Princess from one of the greatest royal houses in Europe became stranded in England following the death of her first husband, the teenage Prince Arthur, and how his younger brother came to her rescue when he became King - Henry VIII. When the succession didn't go to Henry's plan after twenty years of marriage he sought to divorce her which led to the separation of the church in England and the English reformation. She however, never wavered in knowing who she was, as a Catholic, a wife, and a monarch who had made vows to God, her husband, and to the English people whom she was to aid her husband in governing, that she would fulfill her vows no matter what the cost to her personally.
