In Part 2 of our episode on The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, Beau and Ash conclude our discussion of the duology as we analyze The Great Ace Attorney 2: Resolve! Unlike most Ace Attorney entries which tell mostly standalone stories, these two titles are halves of a plot following Phoenix Wright's Victorian/Meiji ancestor Ryunosuke Naruhodo. But how well does this follow up to its predecessor and tie up all loose ends for Ryunosuke and friends? Join us as Ben, Dessy, Tiago, and Rose continue on their journey to play every Ace Attorney game! It's only been a short time in London, but we're already into the second real British case for Ryunosuke! But he's getting a small taste of home, as he's defending another Japanese study tour student: Soseki Natsume! Soseki, the real life author guy! After giving the crew a bit of a history lesson on him, we dive into dealing with Sholmes again, revealing the lies of the Garridebs, and discussing how Tiago and Rose feels about Iris. Lastly, we tangent a bit (as is our wont), and also possibly form a new bit. A bit that I'm definitely going to flub up at some point, because it's all about me reacting as fast as possible. Join us as Ben, Dessy, Tiago, and Rose continue on their journey to play every Ace Attorney game! Thrust into a new place and an unknown court system, how do Ryunosuke and Susato fare on their first case? Well, it's honestly not great, all said. Tiago and Rose meet Magnus McGuilded, but only one gets had! However, both remain pretty skeptical of surprise pink anime girl, despite her weaponry. Does Rose find herself enamored by the new prosecutor? How does the Reaper compare to the others? Find out in this episode, along with several side tangents worthy of our reputation. Join us as Ben, Dessy, Tiago, and Rose continue on their journey to play every Ace Attorney game! This voyage has already turned perilous, with the death of Ryunosuke's best friend! And, to make matters worse, he's been blamed for it by the world-famous detective: Herlock Sholmes! Will logic and reasoning win out, or will the seas swallow our heroes whole?! We check in with Rose's Holmes Facts Corner, as well as Tiago's Sholmes Hater Corner. This speckled band is actually pretty endearing, so join us for another episode as we chat about this case... as well as yacht rock and several other unrelated items. Join us as Ben, Dessy, Tiago, and Rose continue on their journey to play every Ace Attorney game! It's time to embark on a new journey... to Meiji era Japan, and perhaps even London?! Yes, today we're meeting Ryunosuke Naruhodo, his best friend Kazuma Asogi, Susato Mikotoba, and several other wonderful new characters! However, not everything is pleasant, as Ryunosuke is accused of murder, and this Englishwoman is really quite racist. We talk about how we feel about the new setting, some of the development and setup behind the game, sparkling water, theoretically ringing up Capcom on the phone, and also the music! The music!! And now, for something completely different. This month on the GameCola Podcast, staff member James Pelster takes charge of a solo episode! He's got a lot of things to talk about, and plenty of time to do so. Sit back and take a listen to everything he's been dying to discuss, including (but not limited to): - What the heck happened to the Danganronpa V3 and The Great Ace Attorney playthroughs on YouTube? - What's next for the YouTube channel in the future? - James is writing an actual article for the website after six and a half years! - Kerbal Space Program 2 is out in Early Access, and it's pretty busted, but has the potential to be awesome! - Forza Horizon 4 and 5 are the first racing games he enjoys. - Fire Emblem Engage recently released, and he's really bad at it. - Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero challenge James to not repeat the word "immersive" over and over. - Does the Mega Man Battle Network series fit into the card game genre? - Metroid Prime Remastered has complex controls. - Ghost Trick is finally getting a modern port! - Drawing maps for dungeon-crawling games, like early Shin Megami Tensei games, is surprisingly fun! - James is trying to play Resident Evil games beyond the first one on PlayStation. - The Spyro the Dragon games on PS1 still hold up well! - Secret of Mana and Secret of Evermore don't hold up so well, but are still fun. - Dragon Quest VIII is still a wonderful game, fun to play as a family activity! - Do ROM hacks hurt the creative integrity of games? What's the story, RPGFan? Do you think it's worth a look? It seems kinda familiar, like a story from a book. RPGs and adventure games very often have an outsize focus on storytelling, in part because so many of them are about a group of characters growing and changing over the course of their game. Naturally, RPG fans of all stripes would prefer their games have a great story and great gameplay, but we know that's not always the case. In today's episode, five panelists decide whether they prefer a great story or great gameplay when only one of the two is an option, and highlight several games with particularly good narratives with lackluster playability, or vice-versa. Don't ask me no questions, and I won't tell you no lies. We here at Retro Encounter love talking about video games, but decided to spend this episode getting to know each other a little better. In a sequel to a 2020 episode, four RPGFan panelists play a game in which they try to tell fact from fiction and share some details about themselves. Does Sollosi own three copies of Kingdom Hearts II, a game he's never played? Did Wes teach their daughter to impersonate a British character actor? Listen and reach out to the truth! Wow, what a season! I'm really glad that we fixed the entirety of the British Criminal Justice system in perpetuity and that we got a version of Sherlock Holmes who is more of a fun jerk than just a jerk jerk. We'll see you all next time with more visual novel intrigue so TTFN!

Spooky, mysterious, and a lovely addition to your TV watching watchlist. 33:21 - The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles is the perfect entry point to Capcom's visual novel courtroom series. 46:17 - Iki is an ancient philosophy about how to live, and also a gentle gem of a worker movement boardgame from Sorry we are French, via Hachette. All that, and papa's eaten us all, with Kris (@DigitalStrider), Peter (@XeroXeroXero), and Sam (@MrSamTurner). Our Spotify Playlist is over on Spotify, and gathers together lots of great thematic music inspired by the stuff we talk about. Season 1 - Episode 10/10 Daniel McCalla is a Japanese to English video game translator and (occasional) editor. During his four years as a freelancer, he worked on titles such as Phantasy Star Online 2, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis, Dragon Quest XI S, and Ender Lilies. He now works in-house at Capcom as part of their localization team. In this episode he chose to chat about The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, which was released in English (and sadly English only) for the first time on the Switch, PS4 and Steam in 2021. The localization was directed by Janet Tsu, with English localization by Plus Alpha (translation by Will Blatchley and edited by Clare Saracine). "With all the fun and drama of the Ace Attorney series set against the backdrop of Victorian-era Britain and Japan, there's sure to be no "Objection!" to the adventures of Ryunosuke Naruhodo as he turns the courtroom upside down! Featuring an intriguing overarching mystery spanning across two games, it's the most engrossing story in the series yet! ‘The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles' is the definitive version of this beloved series!" Additional In this episode Daniel and I discuss a blog by a Japanese person who breaks down the English localization of The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles. It's a really interesting blog from the perspective of a Japanese native speaker! 英語版「大逆転裁判1&2 -成歩堂龍ノ介の冒險と覺悟-」解説 冒險第1話 法廷【その1】(1) Daniel McCalla Twitter: @Clidante_D Translation Chat A podcast where professional Japanese to English translators and editors chat about their favorite translations. The penultimate episode of the ultimate game in the series has a last dinner before the final trial and it's not the concluding chapter we thought it was and I'll take one closing look at my online thesaurus before stopping this description. How are we going to take down Judge Jigoku? I mean if I told you, you wouldn't listen to this so...
Now it's time to play as my favorite playable character. Professor Mikitoba. How this chapter started: This is a sarcastic comment. How it's going: NO WAIT NOW IT'S UNIRONIC

We predicted earlier this year that we would never be getting a Switch Pro, despite persistent rumors to the contrary. Then the Switch OLED dropped and we were... sort of right. Unfortunately, it was for reasons that were so specific that even our valuable power of taking a firm stance on something only to be proven wrong could not overcome the circumstances. We tried! Sean and Vinnk break down the ongoing, pandemic-fueled disruptions to the global supply chain of advanced computer components affecting every major industry, the ways it has affected the gaming industry for the last two years, and will likely continue to do for the foreseeable future. In Future Retro we talk about Metroid Dread: great game, or greatest game? It's just Josh and Stoy on this episode, with far FAR less RPG action than usual. We talk about updates in the Activision/Blizzard controversy, Super Mario Bros selling for $2 million, and Niantic getting Pokemon Go players mad or something. Josh plays Curse of the Dead Gods, and Stoy continues to play The Ascent and the Great Ace Attorney. Thanks for listening!
