In this episode of the Making Sense of Technology and Multimedia Podcast, host Daniel Douglas explores the world of speech synthesis and AI voice cloning. He discusses the background of speech synthesis technology, from early attempts using mechanical parts to the advancements in neural networks that have led to more natural and humanlike speech. Daniel also shares his personal experience with using AI voice cloning for this episode, as he was unable to speak due to a medical issue. He discusses the pros and cons of speech synthesis AI software, including its benefits for accessibility and content creation, as well as the ethical concerns and potential for miscommunication. Daniel emphasizes the importance of finding a balance between harnessing the potential of speech synthesis for good and addressing the challenges and dilemmas that arise.

Voiseed CEO and Co-founder Andrea Ballista joins SlatorPod to discuss the machine dubbing startup's approach to operating and developing their AI-based virtual voice engine, Revoiceit. Andrea talks about how his passion for music as a child led him to founding audio localization studio Binari Sonori, which he sold to Keywords Studios in 2014, and why he is now launching Voiseed. He shares his impressions from this year's Game Developers Conference where there was a lot of interest in new technologies, voice cloning solutions, and the development of emotional synthetic voices.Andrea unpacks Revoiceit's ability to understand the voice and emotional profile of the user and transfer both profiles into the target language. Voiseed has been profiling vocal delivery and creating a data set, so the system can have a wider knowledge of human emotion in terms of voice and language. On the topic of large language models (LLMs), Andrea is not worried about the implications of LLMs like ChatGPT as they have had two years to build a dataset on vast amounts of voice content. He talks about Voiseed's early financial backers and shares the story behind applying for blended finance (grants and equity) from the European Innovation Council Fund and LIFTT.Andrea shares his experience hiring during the lockdown and their approach to investing in ‘cool' people and helping them grow through their incentive plan. The pod wraps up with Voiseed's product roadmap, where they aim to improve features with more emotion control and work on how to create new voices that can be used in multiple projects.

Recent Text-to-Speech (TTS) systems trained on reading or acted corpora have achieved near human-level naturalness. The diversity of human speech, however, often goes beyond the coverage of these corpora. We believe the ability to handle such diversity is crucial for AI systems to achieve human-level communication. Our work explores the use of more abundant real-world data for building speech synthesizers. We train TTS systems using real-world speech from YouTube and podcasts. We observe the mismatch between training and inference alignments in mel-spectrogram based autoregressive models, leading to unintelligible synthesis, and demonstrate that learned discrete codes within multiple code groups effectively resolves this issue. We introduce our MQTTS system whose architecture is designed for multiple code generation and monotonic alignment, along with the use of a clean silence prompt to improve synthesis quality. We conduct ablation analyses to identify the efficacy of our methods. We show that MQTTS outperforms existing TTS systems in several objective and subjective measures. 2023: Li-Wei Chen, Shinji Watanabe, Alexander I. Rudnicky https://arxiv.org/pdf/2302.04215v1.pdf

Text to speech (TTS) has made rapid progress in both academia and industry in recent years. Some questions naturally arise that whether a TTS system can achieve human-level quality, how to define/judge that quality and how to achieve it. In this paper, we answer these questions by first defining the human-level quality based on the statistical significance of subjective measure and introducing appropriate guidelines to judge it, and then developing a TTS system called NaturalSpeech that achieves human-level quality on a benchmark dataset. 2022: Xu Tan, Jiawei Chen, Haohe Liu, Jian Cong, Chen Zhang, Yanqing Liu, Xi Wang, Yichong Leng, Yuanhao Yi, Lei He, F. We propose AudioStyleGAN (ASGAN), a new generative adversarial network (GAN) for unconditional speech synthesis. As in the StyleGAN family of image synthesis models, ASGAN maps sampled noise to a disentangled latent vector which is then mapped to a sequence of audio features so that signal aliasing is suppressed at every layer. To successfully train ASGAN, we introduce a number of new techniques, including a modification to adaptive discriminator augmentation to probabilistically skip discriminator updates. ASGAN achieves state-of-the-art results in unconditional speech synthesis on the Google Speech Commands dataset. 2022: Matthew Baas, H. Kamper https://arxiv.org/pdf/2210.05271v1.pdf

Neural vocoders, used for converting the spectral representations of an audio signal to the waveforms, are a commonly used component in speech synthesis pipelines. It focuses on synthesizing waveforms from low-dimensional representation, such as Mel-Spectrograms. In recent years, different approaches have been introduced to develop such vocoders. However, it becomes more challenging to assess these new vocoders and compare their performance to previous ones. To address this problem, we present VocBench, a framework that benchmark the performance of state-of-the art neural vocoders. 2021: Ehab A. Brand recognition has long been about logos, taglines, and advertising campaigns, but what if you could use a voice that sounded like your brand to add another level of brand awareness? This is one of the many interesting services ReadSpeaker, an innovative text-to-speech company offers, and its founder and CTO, Niclas Bergström, joins us today. In this episode, we learn more about the company and the variety of products they offer. From web-based SaaS solutions for management and educational systems to hyper-customized voices for brands, their solutions can be deployed to any hardware ranging from embedded systems to high-capacity servers on their cloud. From there, we dive into what it takes to build a voice for brands. There are so many characteristics that make voices what they are, which is why brands and ReadSpeaker need to have a common understanding of what makes a voice what it is. As the industry evolves, so too do the expectations of what a synthetic voice can do, and while people have become much more accepting of them, it’s still important to realize their limitations. We discuss these constraints along with when to use a human voice over a synthetic one. From there, we dive into what the tech giants are doing in the space, and why Niclas believes that small companies will lead the innovation charge rather than the last players. We round the show off by talking about the future of the industry generally as well as for ReadSpeaker specifically, and there are some big things on the horizon.Highlights● Available at http://bit.ly/voicetechpodcast-ep072Quotes from the show[05:55] In a branded voice, you can communicate the company’s values.[07:24] How does your brand sound?
