Harry Stewart grew up with a love of flying and dreamed of becoming an airline pilot one day. But shortly after graduating high school, with the nation at war, Stewart found himself in in the U.S. Army Air Corps. The military needed skilled pilots but would not let black and white personnel train or serve together. Stewart was sent to Tuskegee, Alabama, where he and other black pilots and crew members prepared to serve as fighter pilot escorts for American bombers over Europe. In this edition of Veterans Chronicles, Col. Stewart describes the training, his first experience in air combat, and the day he was credited with shooting down three German planes. He also shares the painful story of his wingman who was shot down over Europe.Stewart also takes us into the historic performance of his team at the Air Force's Top Gun-style competition in 1949, the racism he faced in returning to civilian life, and the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen in transforming American society.Col. Stewart died on February 2, 2025, at the age of 100. This interview was conducted at the 2018 American Veterans Center conference.

In this episode, I was joined by a trio of betting experts to discuss the reaction to my exclusive interview podcast with Andrew Rhodes as released a few days ago.Dan Waugh, Harry Stewart-Moore and Chris Fawcett joined me to unpack all of the key points and to share thoughts on both what Andrew did and didn't say and the ongoing work of the Gambling Commission.Affordability Checks and where they stand currently, their impact on sports like horse racing, bookmaker behaviour and Andrew's take on whether they can be trusted and their woeful reputation amongst those who bet. We also debated the growth of the black market and what it's growth suggests about the regulation of the licensed market were all up for debate. All these topics and more were evaluated with my panel of betting experts - each of whom know these subjects inside out and have considerable experience working within the betting industry. For those of you wanting to know more about the current status of betting in the UK, whether it be a frustration about getting bets and being paid out if winning or even the proposed white paper's impact on bookmakers, this is a podcast for you.Discover More:Learn more on the Smart Betting Club and how we help winning bettors at https://smartbettingclub.com/ Podcast feedback and media enquiries - contact SBC on twitter @sbcinfo or info@smartbettingclub.comRead more about each SBC Podcast episode: https://smartbettingclub.com/the-smart-betting-club-podcast/
Tune in to a captivating episode of 'Echoes of Valor' featuring LTC Harry T. Stewart Jr., one of our nation's most distinguished veterans, and one of last two surviving Tuskegee Airman--brought to you in collaboration with The National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force and The World War II Foundation. Your host, Colonel Tom Rendall, unpacks the gallantry, trials, and historical impact of the Tuskegee Airmen through the personal experiences of Colonel Stewart, a recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross. Colonel Harry T. Stewart Jr. stands as one of the most honored members of the Tuskegee Airmen. Born on July 24, 1924, in Newport News, Virginia, his family relocated to Queens, New York, when he was two, near North Beach Airport. This proximity sparked his lifelong passion for aviation as he gazed at the planes flying above. At 17, sensing his forthcoming draft into World War II, he excelled in a military examination that singled out prospective pilots, which led to his enlistment in the US Army Air Corps as an aviation cadet. Stewart earned his pilot wings at Tuskegee Air Field, Alabama, and, still in his teens, received his commission as a second lieutenant. He underwent combat fighter training in the P-40 Warhawk and P-47 Thunderbolt, and in 1944 he was deployed to Italy with the all-black 332nd Fighter Group. Stewart completed 43 combat missions in the P-51 Mustang. His most notable combat success occurred on April 1, 1945, as then First Lieutenant Stewart and other P-51 pilots protected B-24 Liberators during a bombing mission. The engagement that followed saw Stewart down three FW-190s, securing him the Distinguished Flying Cross. The episode recorded on March 3rd explores Stewart's rigorous training, pivotal combat encounters, and his triumph in the inaugural Air Force "Top Gun" competition of 1949. Stewart, as one of the last Tuskegee Airmen, provides invaluable insight into their contribution to military aviation history. Midway, the episode features spotlights on the Mighty Eighth Air Force and The World War II Foundation, then resumes with a discussion on the timeless relevance of the Tuskegee Airmen's heritage in today's military and aviation realms. In the final segment, Colonel Stewart offers advice to young military and aviation hopefuls, contemplating the strides made and the distance yet to be covered. Seize the opportunity to engage with Colonel Stewart's profound legacy and the collective story of the Tuskegee Airmen. Immerse yourself in a significant slice of World War II history and gain a deeper perspective by reading “Soaring to Glory.” 'Echoes of Valor' continues to narrate tales of airborne bravery. Stay tuned for more stories that are bound to captivate and motivate. Photo Credit: Lydia Thompson (21st Century Fox)/(Robert Clark/National Geographic)

The founder of Ageist, David Harry Stewart, chronicles the changes in his business over the past six years that have led to unexpected growth and success in ways he wasn't expecting.
The founder of AGEIST and host of the SuperAge podcast discusses the shift from anti-aging to positive aging, how targeting by age is an epic fail, and the endless possibilities in life's third act. About David David is the founder and face of AGEIST, a new media company and agency that champions the vitality, capabilities, and influence of the modern 50+. He is a passionate champion and leading authority on the mindset and aspirations that drive this influential demographic. David is frequently called upon to share his expertise and insight at important venues and forums around the world. Recent speaking engagements include HIMSS in Las Vegas, the leading conference for health information and technology; TEDx, on Redefining Age; MONOCLE Quality of Life Conference in Zurich and the Mercedes Benz ME Convention in Stockholm. Prior to launching AGEIST, David enjoyed an award-winning career as a photographer specializing in people-oriented advertising. His work for iconic brands including Nike, Adidas, Google, Coors, AT&T, Coke, Philip Morris, Toyota, Lexus, BMW, Corona, Gillette, Philips, Johnson & Johnson, Red Bull and many more has appeared in GQ, Esquire, Harper's Bazaar, Wired, Interview, Time and The New York Times Magazine. Key Takeaways Don't target by age, it's a huge fail. Age is one of the criteria, but not the defining character criteria. What are people's values and ambitions? How do they see themselves in the future? The word “aging” is problematic because it is lumped together with disease. Apple doesn't target age; they target people. The largest consumer segment for Apple products is men over 65. Wellness is what we have control over, and a set of behaviors that have consequences. There is growing awareness that we have responsibility for our health outcomes; we have agency. Become passionate about your purpose. Purpose orients your life around “How can I be most useful? How can I be most impactful in the world?”
What does it mean to be an age disruptor? In this episode we will learn about that and more as I chat with the incredible David Harry Stewart.David is the founder and face of the AGEIST. Ready For Takeoff - Turn Your Aviation Passion Into A Career
“It was very cold up there and the missions were tiring because they were quite long. They lasted anywhere from five to six-and-a-half hours, and when we got back to the base all we could think of doing was hitting the sack and getting some rest and being prepared for the next day’s mission,” the retired lieutenant colonel said. Being shot down and captured was not an option. The black Tuskegee Airmen were showing the world bigotry didn’t belong — except down below. On April 1, 1945, hate showed its face once again. “There were seven of us and we were going after targets of opportunity in Austria,” he said of the day his squad got into a dogfight with German fighter pilots. “Three of us got shot down. One was able to make it back to friendly territory before he crash-landed, one was killed outright when he was shot down and the third one, his plane was damaged so badly that he had to bail out,” said Stewart. That pilot was captured and lynched three days later by an angry mob. “The crowd, after being agitated by the SS troops, they broke into the jail and took this downed pilot out and they beat him badly first and then hung him from a lamppost. His name was Walter Manning,” Stewart said. “He was a very dynamic person. He was, I remember, a great swimmer. Lord knows what he would have done had he been able to survive the war.” Stewart — one of the Heroes of a Generation the Herald is chronicling — almost faced the same fate that day over Austria. “I realized (as tracer bullets whizzed by him) somebody was shooting at me. A German fighter plane was on my tail and I thought sure that I had had it,” Stewart said. He dove for the ground, pulling up at the last second as the German fighter on his tail crashed nose-first in a ball of flames. “Somebody was with me. I guess it was God as my co-pilot there because that guy should have had me,” he added. “I was about to give up the ghost.” Stewart lives in Michigan now but once trained in Massachusetts at Westover Air Force base in Chicopee and flew with fellow pilots from all over New England. He has a book coming out next week about his days as a Tuskegee Airman. It’s called “Soaring to Glory.” It’s a fascinating tale of a teenage boy in a segregated America defying the odds and proving himself 30,000 feet above the Earth as the world was at war. “I subdued those feelings that I might have had about racial prejudice and committed to the mission,” he said of escorting bombers. “There were 10 lives on board each of those bombers that we were protecting. So anytime we intercepted an enemy fighter and stopped them from shooting the bomber down, we potentially saved 10 lives, and that was 10 American lives, fellow Americans and I was not thinking about some of the segregation that was going on at the time back in the states.” As the story goes, the men on those bombers quickly came to love seeing the Red Tails pull alongside. “We were like their guardian angels,” Stewart said. Those long missions, he added, were exercises in perseverance — a shared trait of all the Tuskegee Airmen. “It was cold … maybe 50 to 60 degrees below zero. … And you’re trapped in the cockpit and you cannot really move,” Stewart said of his single-seat Mustang. “Sometimes coming back from a mission … I would invert the plane, turn it over on its back then so actually I was hanging by my safety strap. “That was such a relief, to go ahead and hang from the safe strap. It was like somebody rubbing your back,” he said, remembering like it was yesterday. “I couldn’t stay in that position for too long, it was only for a second and then turn the plane back over upright again.” Stewart is retired now from his mechanical engineering job with a pipeline company. He was recently invited back to Austria, where the townsfolk of Linz honored the memory of his fellow Tuskegee Airman. “They wanted to make amends for what had happened, what the civilians had done to Walter Manning, and they were doing a commemoration and setting up a very nice memorial for him,” Stewart said. “It was very inspirational.” His days as a Tuskegee Airman come back to Stewart in a dream, he said. But he’s most proud that he showed the world that patriotism transcends race. The book about his life, Soaring To Glory, is available on Amazon.
In this interview with the American Veterans Center's Greg Corombos, Col. Stewart describes the training, what it was like to experience combat in the air, and the day he was credited with shooting down three German planes.Stewart also takes us into the historic performance of his team at the Top Gun competition after the war, the racism he faced in returning to civilian life, and the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen in transforming American society.

“Colored people aren’t accepted as airline pilots.” The “negro type has not the proper reflexes to make a first-class fighter pilot.” These were the degrading sentiments that faced eighteen-year-old Lt. Col. Harry Stewart Jr. as he journeyed in a segregated rail car to Army basic training in Mississippi in 1943. But two years later, the twenty-year-old African American from New York proved doubters wrong when he was at the controls of a P-51, prowling for Luftwaffe aircraft at five thousand feet over the Austrian countryside. Lt. Col. Harry Stewart Jr. is one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. In this episode I talk with him about his early life, training, and combat missions, including the mission in which he downed three enemy fighters. He also discusses the injustices he and his fellow Tuskegee Airmen faced during their wartime service and upon their return home. Unlike white pilots, Stewart and other Tuskegee flyers faced the extra danger that if they were shot down over enemy territory they could not hide in plain sight with the population or expect to live. Tragically, one of Stewart’s friends was shot down, captured, and lynched by a racist mob. Stewart and his fighter group defied racially-prejudice expectations and won the first postwar Air Force-wide gunnery competition for propeller-driven fighters. Stewart obtained honorary captain status from American and Delta Airlines after being denied piloting jobs with those airlines’ legacy carriers (TWA and Pan Am) 50 years ago because of his ethnicity.

Harry Stewart, Pilot and WSFN Harry Stewart was a contractor for Atari from August 1978 through October 1983. He contributed to the operating system design and the manuals for the Atari 400 and 800; created the Atari implementation of the WSFN language (which was released in the first Atari Program Exchange catalog, summer 1981). He worked on Atari's PILOT programming language and the unreleased sequel, Super PILOT (also known as Summer Camp PILOT.) Harry saved an enormous amount of material: source code, memos, notes, and more. He scanned some of it, I scanned some of it, and it's online at the Internet Archive at the AtariAge forums. This interview took place on June 29, 2017. "You debugged in your head. It wasn't sitting at the machine single-stepping and doing breakpoints. If you had a problem, you thought it out.
