One of the most urgent issues in medicine is the impact of the nursing shortage on medical care. Henry June, a medical, surgical, and trauma nurse, as well as an expert witness, shares his insights on the current state of the nursing shortage in the United States, highlighting the projected shortfall of nurses and the challenges faced by new and experienced nurses alike. He outlines the effects of the pandemic on nurse retention and describes the increased patient load that nurses are facing in the midst of the shortage. Henry also explores potential solutions, such as remote monitoring units and incentivizing nurses to become educators. As an LNC, he explains that in the search to determine liability, one must also consider whether understaffing contributed to nursing errors and lists pertinent questions to determine this factor. If you're interested in understanding the implications of the nursing shortage on patient safety and the legal nurse consulting profession, be sure to listen to or read this episode. In Episode 69: Hustle & Flow, we sit down with Fiona Tennant, MSN, FNP-BC, CANS, Founder & CEO of Nurse Fiona Med Spa in Framingham, MA. Fiona began her medical career as an LPN, then became an RN and spent more than a decade working in Pediatrics. It's in Peds that she learned the critical thinking skills that would later help her build a successful practice and become a respected, in-demand injector and trainer years later. Before opening NF Med Spa, she worked at a Plastic Surgery center as a Staff Nurse, and she credits that job with giving her a foundation to build from as she entered the world of non-surgical aesthetics. One weekend class later, the burning desire to go out on her own wouldn't fade, and she made a big decision to leave her steady paycheck and benefits and give entrepreneurship a go! She had to learn to inject largely on her own back then, but twelve years and one very successful med spa later, it was no doubt the right decision. We talk a lot about her decision to go back to school and become a Nurse Practitioner. With kids, a husband, and a booming business, it seems like an impossible time to do it, but she's overcome adversity and fought her way through life before. As a young mom, she was on food stamps and lived in Section 8 housing, but she knew where she wanted to go, and she's always had the hustle factor to get there. But why now? Why go back to school when all the puzzle pieces are finally in place? Her decision was driven by a few key factors that are weighing heavy on the minds of RNs across the industry: She never wanted to feel that her Practice or her staff were at risk because of her licensure or because she had to involve other parties to legally own NF Med spa. She's a stickler for the rules and as the grey area gets smaller and smaller, she wanted to mitigate any risks and take that burden off her shoulders.   As an NP, she can diagnose and prescribe eliminating the burden of hiring NPs just to complete Good Faith Exams so she can see her own Patients. More and more states are moving toward legislation to further limit the scope of practice of RNs and prevent them from injecting or running devices, and she wanted to protect what she'd build over all these years. We also talk about the challenges of business ownership from wearing may hats to working late hours and finding the right staff who want to do great work and stay with you. Like so many, she's taken injectors under her wing only to train them and have them leave, but she works diligently to create an environment that enriches her staff and fuels their growth. With her NP boards wrapped up and a little more freedom on her hands for the first time in years, it's no shock she's antsy to keep growing! She has her sites set on south Florida where she's opening another NF location and expanding her brand.  She's no stranger to the game and has been burned before, so she's playing this one close to the vest….time will tell where the next Nurse Fiona Med Spa will open, but there's no doubt it will be a success- she's doesn't shy away from hard work, and she's eager to grow into the next phase of her business journey! Cardiovascular events make up some of the most dangerous and time-sensitive conditions that get treated in the emergency room and hospital at large. For this reason, they make up a significant proportion of malpractice suits concerning cardiac care An LNC needs to be deeply familiar with all aspects of cardiovascular and treatment. She or he must know what results are unavoidable and which are preventable. Here to explain some of the most critical elements of cardiovascular care is Lailen Baua, an LNC with broad experience in many aspects of clinical care. Time is a critical factor. In some cases, delays are beyond a hospital team's control, such as those caused by distance from a well-equipped hospital or traffic delays. Lailan says that ideally it should be no more than two hours before a cardiovascular patient is receiving appropriate treatment, such as a balloon angioplasty. Errors in the administration of these procedures can also be potential sources for malpractice. Misdiagnosis is also a factor in disability and death from a cardiac event. Too many people are diagnosed with a digestive issue and sent home, where they have heart attacks. Lailen's explanations and descriptions will help to guide you in analyzing a cardiovascular case. Be sure to take the opportunity to review this valuable podcast. You'll hear real-life examples of how nurses can take small steps that lead to big quality-of-life improvements for elders and people living with disabilities. Nurses already have a natural desire to help others and provide comfort – and with the right leadership and guidance, nurses can form the bedrock of an elder-directed culture at nursing homes and other communal eldercare settings. Nurses aren't just pill-distributors and vitals-takers; they're the eyes, ears, and heart of an organization that can provide the personal connections that make all the difference for elders and families alike. 26 November 2008. There's perhaps still a lingering sense of disbelief as we talk about the day.  Even 13 years after the attack, we continue to piece together all the tiny details of the events of the day through the words and memories of those who survived to tell the tale. In this special episode of The Big Story we get first-hand accounts of three journalists who covered the attack from ground zero. In this podcast you'll hear from Raksha Shetty, Mahrukh Inayat and Shai Venkatraman talk about how they went around covering the attack.  Along with that we also have with us Anjali Kulthe, Staff Nurse of Labour Room at Cama Hospital who showed extreme grit and saved the lives of several pregnant women when the hospital had come under attack.  You'll also hear from Dr Shailesh Mohite, Former Forensic Head at Nair Hospital who recounts how he had to operate on the lone surviving terrorist Ajmal Kasab.  Tune in! Constance who is Semi retired now but runs a bame community group in Reading first started working for the NHS in the 70's when she arrived from her birthplace the Carribean. The NHS is now 72 years old and Constance still has a love of the institution that was started in 1948 the same year the Windrush generation arrived many of whom were part of the NHS from the beginning. It takes a lot of dedication to be a nurse who puts other people's lives ahead of their own and we are all thankful for our NHS heroes everyday.
