Nurses. They are the backbone of health care, standing on the front lines every day. National Nurses Week runs from May 12–18, and in this episode, we celebrate those working in mental health. Our guest, Nate Ballantyne, is more than a registered nurse—he's also mentor, teacher, and role model.
RaeAnn Tucker from the Henry and Stark County Health Departments joined Wake Up Tri-Counties to talk about health designations as we begin the month of May. Child Mental Health Week is celebrated from May 5th to 11th, 2025, and Nurses Week is celebrated from May 6th to 12th, 2025. Health advocates in Henry and Stark counties are spotlighting children's mental health as part of a national awareness week from May 5th to 11th, underscoring that one in six youth nationwide faces mental illness annually. Limited resources leave many without critical care, so families are urged to seek help early. Alongside this, National Nurses Week runs from May 6th to 12th, honoring nurses' critical roles—from bedside support to community leadership. Meanwhile, Clean Air Month brings a warning about radon dangers, with local data revealing high levels in most Stark County homes. Affordable radon test kits are available for $15 at Health Department offices in Kewanee, Colona, and Toulon.
With National Nurses Week Upon us from May 6 to 12, it's a ceremonial time to recognize the amazing things that those professionals bring to the healing world. This episode of the Thomas Jefferson University News Podcast shares a story that starts with students interested in learning more about the profession and culminates with a look at a new initiative designed to further the education of those already in the field. We start with a look at the College of Health Professions' Introduction to Nursing course which serves as a launching pad for those interested in learning more about the profession, and as you will hear from students, the messages build quite a foundation. From there, they can enter a rewarding field in which a lifelong learning mindset has recently been bolstered by the formation of a Nurse Leader Accelerator initiative. With guidance from College of Nursing Dean Marie Ann Marino, Connelly Foundation Chief Nurse Executive Officer Kate Fitzpatrick and Senior Vice President/Chief Nursing Executive Annemarie Chavarria, Jefferson created to provide a unique educational experience to advance their roles in the professional world. While there are millions of stories from within the nursing world, consider this one bookended from the start of some would-be nurses' journey into the heights they can achieve in the field. This week is National Nurses Week! An online transcript is available. The book from which these reflections are drawn is available to download or read online..On today's program, we are listening to nurses as they reflect on their experiences on the frontlines during the COVID-19 pandemic. These are stories of uncertainty and fear, of anger and resilience, dedication, recovery, and camaraderie. But most of all these are stories about caregiving. The readings that make up this episode are drawn from the book, Providence Nurses Inspire Hope through Healing: Reflections from the Frontlines of the COVID-19 Pandemic, edited by Hilary Alison, Katie Adams, Katie Grainger, and Hayley Pike. On this special episode of DGTL Voices, Ed sits down with Serena Bumpus, Chief Executive Officer at Texas Nurses Association in celebration of National Nurses Week.
National Nurses Week is held each year beginning May 6th and ends 12th, during which Florence Nightingale's birthday occurs. Nightingale played an instrumental role in shaping the role of the modern-day nurse. Celebrated annually, this event honors nurses around the world who have made contributions to our lives. For the burn survivor, nurses have played a vital role in recovery, and shape the experiences that are faced in the burn unit. In this episode, we honor this special week by speaking with both a burn survivor and burn nurse, Brianna Blackwell. A burn survivor herself, Brianna shares with us her real-life experiences as both a survivor and a nurse, answers commonly asked questions she gets from burn survivors in the unit, and joins Girls with Grafts as we thank and honor nurses around the world. About Brianna BlackwellBrianna Blackwell is a childhood burn survivor who has gleaned passion and purpose from adversity. Her tragedy at the age of three years old has turned into triumph in a life of service. Brianna graduated with honors from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. She currently works as a Registered Nurse at Eskenazi Health in Indianapolis, IN, working in Indiana's only verified adult burn center. With a special focus on holistic and psychosocial concepts, Brianna continues to work in many capacities to advocate for burn survivors. This week is National Nurses Week, and it is a time to honor the contributions and sacrifices of nurses who perform some of the most difficult and heartbreaking tasks in the medical world. As workers who perform the most essential healthcare tasks, nurses serve as the first point of contact for most patients…and they save lives and restore health in the process. Yet, nursing is often a thankless profession that is underappreciated and experiences high levels of burnout and moral injury. There are a multitude of factors related to societal attitudes towards the nursing profession, and many of them result in a lack of recognition and support, inadequate compensation, limited opportunities for career advancement, and ultimately a lack of respect and appreciation for the work they do. We must begin to think about how to better position the profession to take a leading role in healthcare innovation. Nurses must become more empowered as we transition to a future of value-based care. This week on the podcast, we are honored to be interviewing Rebecca Love. She is an experienced nurse executive, the first nurse featured on Ted.com, and part of the first nurse panel at South by Southwest. Rebecca is a regular contributor on the Forbes Business Council, and has been featured in BBC, Fortune, Becker's, Forbes, Chief Healthcare Executive Magazine and ABC news. Rebecca, was the first Director of Nurse Innovation & Entrepreneurship in the United States at Northeastern School of Nursing – the founding initiative in the Country designed to empower nurses as innovators and entrepreneurs, where she founded the Nurse Hackathon, the movement has led to transformational change in the Nursing Profession. In early 2019, Rebecca, along with a group of leading nurses in the world, founded and is President Emeritus of SONSIEL: The Society of Nurse Scientists, Innovators, Entrepreneurs & Leaders, a non-profit that quickly attained recognition by the United Nations as an Affiliate Member to the UN. Rebecca is a world renowned Nurse Entrepreneur and currently serves as the Chief Clinical Officer of IntelyCare.
