International Nurses Day is an important opportunity to check the pulse of nurses around the world, especially in 2023. Nurses have given their all in the response to pandemics, natural disasters, in war zones, global vaccination efforts, and in completely redesigning how and where care is delivered. The value of nurses has never been more clear. Nor could it be any clearer that not enough is being done to protect nurses and other health workers, as demonstrated by the alarming rise of verbal and physical abuse against health care workers, with nursing often the primary target.    COVID-19 has altered many nurses' career plans – over the past few years, McKinsey & Company has found that worldwide, nurses consistently, and increasingly, report planning to leave the workforce at higher rates compared with the past decade. Those departures have profound implications for the health of citizens and systems everywhere. Indeed, the greatest threat to global health is the workforce shortage.    As part of our Meeting of Minds series, we listen in as four McKinsey partners from their Healthcare Systems & Services practice discuss the results of a McKinsey & Company survey of frontline nurses across six countries including Brazil, France, Japan, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States. In this conversation we hear Gretchen Berlin, RN, Thomas London, MBA, Robin Roark, MD, MBA, and Senthu Arumugam, MBA explore the survey's findings of why nurses are considering leaving their roles, what energizes them to keep going,  and how nurses around the world are eager to innovate and deliver care in different and better ways to solve what has become a consequential global problem. In this weeks' episode of the G Word, Naimah Callachand, Head of Product Marketing at Genomics England, is joined by Tiggy Johnstone-Burt, a Macmillan Genomics Clinical Fellow and a clinical nurse specialist, Vicky Cuthill, a nurse consultant, and Sally Shillaker, a health visitor and practice development lead in genomics, to discuss how both nurses and health visitors play a vital role in the patient care pathway for those who have received a genetic diagnosis. For this years' International Nurses Day on 12 May, we're celebrating a brighter future of nursing. With the rapid advances in genomic medicine, both nurses and health visitors are uniquely positioned to translate genomic information into clinical care and to educate patients and families about the role of genomics in their health.     You can read to the transcript here: International-Nurses-Day.docx   "I would love to see an NHS service where genomic testing was part of the standard routine care…This is a beautiful example of advanced practice and I think that we [nurses and health visitors] are perfectly placed to be taking this on, and I'd really like to see a better recognition of that in the future."

Chapek suggested that it should not be a concern, as evidenced by the ongoing box office success of films such as Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.   At a recent post-earnings conference call, Chapek stated, "We've got a long track record of success and a strong fan base for our brands and franchises in this market... We'll continue to submit our films for release. And it is worth noting, I think, though, that at the time that we are having some difficulty in getting our films in China, that Doctor Strange did extraordinarily well."   He added, "So we're pretty confident that even without China, if it were to be that we continue to have difficulties in getting titles in there, that it doesn't really preclude our success given the relatively lower take rate that we get on the box office in China than we do across the rest of the world."   Thus far, the Doctor Strange sequel has grossed approximately $507.8 million at the box office worldwide, including $213.6M domestically. The financial success of the recently released Marvel Studios film follows shortly after the monumental success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which earned $1.89 billion worldwide, without ever being released in China.   DISNEY+   Disney+ Hits 137.7M Subscribers, Beating Wall Street Expectations in Streaming https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/business-news/disney-q2-2022-earnings-streaming-1235144837/ Disney once again beat Wall Street expectations last quarter in streaming, adding 7.9 million Disney+ subscribers, and suggesting that the company may be positioned to take a lead in what has become a cutthroat race to the top in streaming.   While Wall Street expectations for Disney+ were varied, a midpoint expectation was 4.5 million to 5 million adds.   Disney reported revenue of $19.2 billion and income of $3.7 billion, with earnings per share of $1.08. Wall Street expectations were for revenue of $20.1 billion, operating income of $3.3 billion, and EPS of $1.17. The EPS miss could be due to a change in tax regulations, which saw the company's effective tax rate balloon from 8.8 percent a year ago to 45.8 percent last quarter. Disney also took a $1 billion hit related to ending content licensing agreements early that it could use it on its own streaming service. Disney didn't break out what that programming was, but it is likely the output deal with Netflix, including the streaming services' Marvel series.   OUTRO AND BONUS AUDIO [39:19]   We would love to hear back from you! International Nurses Day is an important opportunity to check the pulse of nurses around the world, especially in 2022. Nurses have given their all in the response to pandemics, natural disasters, and in war zones, in leading mass COVID-19 testing and vaccination efforts, and in completely redesigning how and where care is delivered. The value of nurses has never been more clear. Nor could it be any clearer that not enough is being done to protect nurses and other health workers, tragically underscored by the more than 180,000 health worker deaths due to COVID-19 and the alarming increase of mental health conditions and concerns nurses report.   COVID-19 has altered many nurses' career plans – over the past two years, McKinsey & Company has found that worldwide, nurses consistently, and increasingly, report planning to leave the workforce at higher rates compared with the past decade.
