In episode ten of season two of A is for Architecture, I speak with Beatriz Colomina and Evangelos Kotsioris, about their book Radical Pedagogies, co-edited with Ignacio G. Galán and Anna-Maria Meister and published by MIT Press in 2022. Beatriz is Howard Crosby Butler Professor of the History of Architecture at Princeton University and Evangelos Kotsioris, Curatorial Assistant in the Department of Architecture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Radical Pedagogies documents and analyses the long history of experimental architecture education programs that ‘sought to upend disciplinary foundations and conventional assumptions about the nature of architecture […] challenged modernist and colonial norms, decentered building, imagined new roles for the architect, and envisioned participatory forms of practice' in favour of greater diversity, insight, democratic voice and justice, and away from top-down educational - and practice -models. You can get the book via MIT Press' website here; it's certainly worth a look. You can also find out more about Beatriz Colomina here, and listen to her lecture on similar themes to the book for the Strelka Institute here, in a lecture she gave in 2019, entitled Radical Pedagogies. Evangelos can be found at MoMA here, on Instagram here, on LinkedIn here and watched speaking about the façade of the UN Secretariat Building as part of MoMA's ArtSpeaks program here. As any of us in it, or who've gone through it might attest, architectural education seems to trend to the centre, and its base form remains remarkably resilient to change, even in the face of the great technical, social and cultural shifts that have transformed the contemporary world. Radical Pedagogies documents the visions – hopes, I suppose – of folk who tried, and in many cases succeeded, in testing new forms of learning practice in the face of this shifting landscape. Benjamin Bratton is one of the most interesting thinkers of our time. In his work he bridges the gap between political theory and the techno-social realities and possibilities of our time.On the format:This Future Histories LIVE event came together as part of an invitation to hold a guest lecture at the Goldsmiths College in London. I proposed a format in which I would hold a short presentation on podcasting as a form of extended research and then record an episode live in front of the students. Radically rethinking property rights has always been a core part of RadicalxChange’s mission. Outdated models of owning versus renting land or holding stock in a company have created many societal problems. In this panel, we will hear from several entrepreneurs and innovative thinkers building new kinds of communities. Common to all panelists is a desire to unlock new types of human prosperity by moving past outdated models of ownership. SPEAKERS Mathew Dryhurst is an artist and researcher based in Berlin Germany. His research focuses on technical and ethical protocols. He makes music and creates art with Holly Herndon, and their albums PROTO and Platform (4AD) have provoked international critical acclaim. He teaches at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, Strelka Institute and European Graduate School. He previously served as Director of Programming at Gray Area in San Francisco. Most recently, Dryhurst co-founded the podcast series Interdependence alongside Holly Herndon. Joeri Torfs is the Operational Director of the Quality of Life World Foundation Joeri is driven by knowledge and learning, his allergy to rules and authority made him choose to become an entrepreneur. He found his true calling in software development. He enjoys finding and building structures from chaos and challenging the status quo. His purpose is to free humanity from the enslavement of society by building and using systems, frameworks, and tools capable of converting human intuitive participative and collaborative energy into constructive outcomes. He’s convinced that together we can increase our quality of life by accepting life's challenges, building trust, letting go of control and rely on frictionless participation and collaboration in a framework that evolves with societal needs. MODERATORJohn Surico is a journalist and urban planning researcher. His reporting can be found in The New York Times, CityLab, VICE and numerous other outlets, where he primarily writes about cities, transit and open space. Previously, he was a research fellow at Center for an Urban Future, a leading think tank in New York, and taught undergraduate journalism at NYU. He is currently pursuing an MSc at University College London's The Bartlett in Transport and City Planning. He is based in Oxford, UK.
What kind of cultural theory would be adequate for the age of climate disturbances, technological shifts, and large-scale infrastructures? In this episode, Jussi Parikka, a media theorist and author of 'Geology of Media', talks about the materiality of media, slow environmental violence, and the way to apply his theory to The Terraforming. SONIC ACTS ACADEMY 2020 Lukáš Likavčan – Introduction to Comparative Planetology 23 February 2020 – De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Errata: The lecturer would like to correct the crediting for Holly Herndon's 'Extreme Love’ track from her PROTO album and add co-authors Jenna Sutela and Lilly Anna Haynes. Theorist Lukáš Likavčan collaborates on art projects, including the simulation alt’ai, questioning machine protocols in communicating with environments. Exploring imaginations of Earth from the impersonal, totalising view to one in which humans are environmental accidents at home anywhere, he finds resonance in a line from Holly Herndon’s Extreme Love (2019): ‘We are completely outside ourselves, and the world is completely inside us.’ In his lecture Introduction to Comparative Planetology, Likavčan looks into how as a philosophical genre, comparative planetology presents an intertwined analysis of visual cultures of imagining the Earth and geopolitics of climate emergency. It compares different ‘figures’ of the planet – the Planetary, the Globe, the Terrestrial, Earth-without-us and Spectral Earth. These five figures function simultaneously as visual paradigms, geopolitical regimes and design briefs; each of them has different prospects in guiding our interventions against runaway global heating, and ultimately against mass species extinction. While engaging in this conceptual, cosmological endeavour, comparative planetology seeks to become one of the navigational tools in plotting our way out of the impasse of modernity. Lukáš Likavčan is a researcher and theorist who writes on the philosophy of technology and political ecology. Concluding his PhD in environmental studies at Masaryk University, Brno, he now teaches at Centre for Audiovisual Studies at FAMU in Prague and Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design in Moscow, a graduate of their experimental New Normal programme. As a researcher, he was based at Vienna University of Economics and Business, Hong Kong Polytechnic University and BAK – basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht. Oscillating between academic practice and a broad zone between art and design, he focuses on infrastructural conditions of subjectivity, abstraction and imagination. Likavčan just released a book Introduction to Comparative Planetology (2019, Strelka Press) that presents an analysis of visual cultures of imagining the Earth and the geopolitics of climate emergency.

For our third podcast, we were very happy to host Nicolay Boyadjiev, who spoke at our annual UNStudio Summer Conference in Amsterdam. Nicolai is a Design Tutor at the Strelka Institute, which is a non-governmental education institutions based in Moscow, that has an experimental approach to studying architecture and design, offering a famously multidisciplinary academic program. For our summer conference on the theme of Ownership, we asked Nicolai the following question: “In the future, will we all be jobless?”. Throughout his talk, Nicolai looked at the gig economy, co-working, platformization and the relationship between space and labor. He primarily takes from the example of We work, arguing that beyond its intention of becoming a “Capitalist Kibbutz”, We-Work could even be viewed as a speculative design project.
We are Russian agents on this one. Billy, Joy, and new guest Nikolai discuss the Strelka Institute, an architecture and urban planning school/think tank housed in Moscow, which Joy and Nikolai both attend. We also discuss the strange dreams that Nikolai has been having, including one where he and his friends are running away from an apocalyptic event. Finally, Joy and Billy discuss the perils of going to single sex schools. And a bunch of other stuff, I don't really remember and I didn't re-listen to the whole thing honestly, so the quality might be off. Might have also talked about memes and stuff (ay Russia), and the recent Russian election. Also Nikolai and Joy discuss a trip they recently went on, and Nikolai discusses his evolving sense of some sort of Russian nationalism/identity having alternately spent time in "Siberia" and big cities. He's actually from Russia. So if the CIA is listening to this podcast/reading this, he's the Russian agent. Me and Joy are just playing along, please don't send us to the gulag. Ukrainian designer Anna Kulachek works and lives in Moscow. She teaches graphic design at the Higher School of Economics and is art director at the Strelka Institute. Earlier she worked for the communication research centre Fabrica in Italy and Design Depot in Moscow. We talk with Anna about why she decided to move to Moscow to study graphic design. We wonder what the differences are between graphic design from the West and the East (Russia and Ukraine). Anna explains how the Cyrillic writing system is very much influencing the way she designs. We end the interview with the question if she still has a dream job, something that she would really like to do in the future. Recorded at the Serebro Nebora 2015 Conference in Moscow, Russia.
