On this week's episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitch is back in his element consulting on crops. This week's crop is a hot topic in the wildlife habitat and management world - switchgrass. Switchgrass use has grown in popularity for habitat improvement as well as food plot screening. While it's extremely effective when established, it's slightly more difficult to get started when compared to your fast growing annual food plots. Mitch breaks down a few details and experiences he has had that hopefully you can implement into your switchgrass planting. In addition to switchgrass, the use of annual screening such as egyptian wheat has increased. While it's simpler to establish than switchgrass, there are a few things to consider when planting to ensure maximum potential. In both crops, Mitch breaks down weed management, seed bed preparation, and timing of planting. You'll hear information about herbicides that can be effective while aiding in your establishment, as well as the timing when they should be applied. Start planning your successful plantings now - shooting from the hip this spring may result in frustration! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In this Episode, Colin is joined by Sam Tumberg, Owner of Purpose Filled Habitat Management based out of Minnesota. Sam talks about his background how he grew up hunting on their family dairy farm as a young man, and his journey as a bow hunter and habitat manager. Colin talks about how both of their farms are very similar in many different ways, and both have done similar habitat improvements. Sam talks about switchgrass planting methods, what his main goals are when using switchgrass, and some of the ways he has enhanced his switchgrass for bedding. Sam and Colin discuss some of their experiences after visiting with many clients who utilize switchgrass on their property and talk about their observations. Sam Talks about old field management and how to go about killing and managing cool-season grasses to promote more forbs and woody browse within these open areas on his property. Colin Talks about planting pollinator blends in areas where there are very little native seeds in the seed bank, and also how to fallow some areas to reduce his herbicide use on his farm. Sam discusses his techniques while using edge feathering on his farm and explains the benefits it has for adding depth of cover, screening, buck sneak trails, and other benefits for many species of wildlife. Sam closes out the discussion with a story of a buck he killed two years ago on his farm that ended up scoring just over 180", and how he got to reap the rewards of his hard work building habitat on their farm. https://www.pfhabitat.com/ https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCJISSzxSOTMtVBhGIT-fFrQ https://www.legendaryhabitat.com/ https://www.youtube.com/@legendaryhabitatllc7649/videos https://www.instagram.com/legendary_habitat/

In this episode, Jon Teater (Whitetail Landscapes) and Roger Samson (REP-Canada) discuss improved warm season grass varieties that are available to habitat managers. Roger explains his experience and natural grasses. Roger goes over the history of Switchgrass and other varieties like Cave in Rock and Blackwell. Roger details the original focus of switchgrass and benefits of cattle, mining locations, reclamation, mulching, and biofuels. Roger explains the evolution of switchgrass, prior switchgrass problems such as slow emergence, morphology, seedling vigor, etc. Roger worked to solve these issues, taking 30 years to establish a breeding program that created taller, erect, and quick emergence grasses. Roger and Jon discuss wildlife uses and the benefits to our soil, and soil habitat. Roger explains the advanced developed varieties of switchgrass, RC Big Rock and RC Tecumseh, and the benefits compared to prior varieties. Roger explains the differences in physical characteristics and the purpose behind each, and what varieties would be adapted to specific site conditions (rain, heat, etc.). Jon and Roger dialogue about developing plants that can stand taller, more erect, and withstand ice and snow loads. Roger discusses new planting methods and a new variety of big bluestem variety that will soon be in the market. Roger details specifics on plant spacing and why solid seeding stands may not be the best option. Roger discusses options for planting that provides ideal spacing for ground birds (turkey). Roger discusses the cost variances of switchgrass versus other options like miscanthus, specifically miscanthus giganteus. Roger explains the performance variances versus miscanthus and the morphology as compared to other non-native plants. Roger details all the benefits of switchgrass why these next generation varieties outcompete other grass types. The price at the gas pump includes a lot of hidden costs, and they are going up. How will this impact your budget? What does it mean for the future of car ownership? On today's podcast, Ted Michalos and Doug Hoyes discuss the hidden costs of gas and how the increase in some of the price components will mean you'll only be paying more to fuel your car. It's the holiday season and we're making spirits bright. For Nick Colombo, spirits are his whole world. He started off brewing beer, but he ended up distilling spirits. He discovered his first love helped shape the unique spirits coming out of Switchgrass Spirits, a local distillery located in North St. Louis. The old American Legion Hall is now filled with hundreds of barrels aging whiskey, rye and bourbon. The unique thing about Switchgrass Spirits is they only create and age their own product. If you know anything about spirits, that's a tough thing to do because it takes a while before there's anything to sell. Nick shares the challenges and the successes once they finally had that first bottle ready to sell. He owes much of that success to the enthusiastic and supportive St. Louis community. That and he feels that he made a really good product.
The guys try a local brand, Switchgrass Spirits, and their wheated Straight Rye bottle. How does this young rye stack up? Other topics include standard bottle sizes potentially changing across the board and Dan tells an embarrassing story involving Switchgrass Spirits. ----------------------------------------------------- Would you rather watch us? Gay homosexuals Nick and Joseph discuss the 2021 film Midnight in the Switchgrass directed by Randall Emmett in his directorial debut, from a screenplay by Alan Horsnail. It stars Megan Fox, Bruce Willis, Emile Hirsch, and Lukas Haas. Additional topics include: Queen of the Universe, moving, the deaths of Betty White, Desmon Tutu, and Jean Marc Vallee, and too many films to mention. Detective Byron Crawford (Emile Hirsch) is investigating a string of murdered young women that appear to be serial killings along Interstate 10 in Pensacola, Florida. He is soon joined by two undercover FBI agents, Rebecca Lombardo (Megan Fox) and Karl Helter (Bruce Willis), who have been working a separate sex-trafficking ring. Before long, the three realize that they're looking for the same suspect and set up a trap to catch the killer, Peter Hillborough (Lukas Haas), before he can strike again. If you are thinking of catching this film because you're a Bruce Willis fan and the above synopsis sounds interesting: don't. There is a rumor that Willis' scenes were all shot within a day and it shows. It is apparent he couldn't care less about this role and his acting is akin to cardboard. He is clearly reading from a script off-camera during some scenes. It's probably a good thing he's only on-screen for a total of about 10-minutes. Willis isn't the only problem with the film, however. The narration is all over the place and the music selection is atrocious. The movie is so bland, generic, and inept that it feels a little bit too ambitious for all players involved. Release Year: 2021Genre: MysteryStarring: Emile Hirsch, Megan Fox, and Bruce Willis.TrailerSummary: An FBI agent and Florida State officer team up to investigate a string of unsolved murder cases. Randall Emmett (@randallemmettfilms) is living out every film buff's dream. He has produced hundreds of films, two Martin Scorsese films, The Irishman (2019) and Silence (2016), and he has the pleasure of affectionately calling him “Marty.” After working with Scorsese, Randall is more in touch with filmmaking than ever. He will make his directorial debut this year for Midnight in the Switchgrass starring Megan Fox and Bruce Willis. Plus, he has recently starred alongside his fiance La La Kent in the hit reality show Vanderpump Rules'. Despite his notoriety, Randall still envisions himself as the film-school nerd he was in college. In this episode, he tells Matt what it's like to be in a room with The Martin Scorsese, why directing feels like “his truth,” and how he was finally convinced to appear in an episode of Vanderpump Rules'. Randy's collaborations with BondIt and Buffalo 8 include the Buffalo 8 Post-Production and BondIt financed and Executive Produced films Trauma Center (2019), Open Source 2020) and Midnight in the Switchgrass (2021).
