Every athlete goes through it at some point when the playing days are over — athlete transition. Whether an athletic retirement is caused by being medically sidelined, not being good enough to continue to the next level, or aging out, there are common themes and pitfalls many athletes in transition experience. Today we're having a conversation about “life after sports” . . . the good, the bad, and the ugly. Where does an athlete begin to channel that "inner competitor" to move forward? How do you figure out what's next? What if you've lost your motivation and drive without your sport? How does “identity” play into all this? Today's podcast guest is Taj Dashaun, a former athlete, now author, speaker, and athlete transition coach. When his football career ended, Taj struggled heavily with depression. Because he had been so focused on the game, he never fully developed a clear vision for his life. After several years of stumbling around in the emotional darkness of uncertainty, Taj began to take his eyes off of himself and focus on serving others. He now runs holistic programs for retired athletes who, like he once was, are struggling to adapt to life after the game. It's his personal mission and passion to help others overcome the fear, frustration and uncertainty associated with life post-athletics. Join us for this rich discussion! Taj played D1 football at Stoney Brook University and after he realized he wasn't going pro he fell into drinking and depression. Playing this sport and recognizing it as a significant piece of his personality for almost 20 years hurt when it was taken away. Taj was able to pick himself up and get better at dealing with the end of his playing career, and once he did, he noticed many of his friends were going through the same thing. How do you deal with disappointments and rejections? Do you isolate yourself from the people you love and take all the blame for failing? People who miss the mark drown themselves in desperation, loneliness, and destructive habits like getting drunk and things of that nature. We can imagine the anxiety running through someone's mind as he comes across that dark place any one of us can experience. Assuredly, all who know how to dream are prone to the dreadful phases of disappointments.   Nevertheless, we must never let disappointments stop us from doing the things we love. Remember that there are things in life that are out of our control. Instead, we must work thoroughly with all of our might and concentrate on the things we can amend. Keep in mind the end goal of where we want to be to cultivate clarity. By doing so, we are putting ourselves in the driver's seat of our lives to be in the position we ultimately want to be. And as we walk through our desired path, we will meet people who can provide us strategies and learnings that we can use as our weapon to triumph. However, while receiving assistance from them, we can still serve them in some ways for their advancement.   Taj Dashaun is an athlete, husband, motivational speaker, podcast host, and the Vice President of Self-Publish in 30 days. I think I had a naive mentality that everything would work itself out the way it always had."- Taj Dashaun   "And what I realized in hindsight, what I was doing was trying to numb myself because I felt so low and so lost and almost so hopeless as a young man at that point; I wasn't doing anything productive for quite some time. I was feeling sorry for myself, not knowing how to articulate what I was going through." - Taj Dashaun   "The first thing I did was cut out the vices, started working out again, getting up early, started journaling, started listening to podcasts, started reading again. And being productive about my self-improvement and also opening up and having a dialogue with my family about what I was going through." - Taj Dashaun   "I learned about myself, the world, and what it means to be getting better every single day truly." - Taj Dashaun   "The game is not about getting somewhere, but it is about waking up and playing the game of getting better in some way, shape, or form every single day." - Taj Dashaun   "We all have the same underlying mission. So, find people who are doing what you already want to be doing." - Taj Dashaun   "You can always add value. You might not think so, but sometimes you can bring that one piece your mentor needs to advance their project or platform. So always think about what you can do for this person more than what they can do for you?" - Taj Dashaun   "This is like a book that you can pick up, and by the time you put it down, you have moved through the transition and have a clear direction for where you want to go and be executing it." - Taj Dashaun   "How can I bring a bunch of people together who are doing great things? It's great because whoever picks up the book, they get a bunch of different stories, a bunch of different people doing cool things." - Taj Dashaun     "And that's a great part about a mentor because someone has to choose you as their mentee. And for someone to want to mentor you, that means they see a part of themselves, or they see something in you that you do not see in yourself." - Taj Dashaun   "Focusing on who I want to become instead of who I am, puts the power back into your hands and gives you creative control over your own life."   "The question that we should all be asking ourselves every single day, no matter how successful we are, is who do I want to become" - Taj Dashaun   Connect with Taj Dashaun: Website: https://www.tajdashaun.com/ LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/tajdashaun Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tajdashaun/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/coachtajdashaun/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdQgi_hDXaP5-6OtX_Nyf4A Podcast: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/thrive-after-sports-w-taj-dashaun/id1465769826   Connect with Dr. Derrick Burgess: Website: https://www.drderrickthesportsdr.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drderrickthesportsdr/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TimeOut.SportsDr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/derrick-burgess-72047b246/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHGDu1zT4K_X6PnYELu8weg Email: thesportsdoctr@gmail.com   This episode of TimeOut with the SportsDr. is produced by Podcast VAs Philippines - the team that helps podcasters effectively launch and manage their podcasts, so we don't have to. In this episode of the I Am A Champion show, the guys are joined by Coaches Steven McRoberts, and Taj Dashaun to discuss how we can thrive through transitions in both life and sports. In 25 years as a collegiate head coach, including 17 at the Division I level, Steven McRoberts owns a 619-265 (.700) overall record with 23 winning seasons and 19 years with 20 or more victories. He ended the 2021 season ranked 19th among active Division I coaches in total victories and 26th in winning percentage. A 10-time conference coach of the year, McRoberts' teams have won a combined 13 conference regular season, tournament, and national postseason tournament titles. He has mentored a total of 20 All-Americans, 70 all-conference players, 11 conference players of the year, 12 Academic All-Americans, and 29 total specialty award winners at the conference level. McRoberts came to Missouri State after a six-year tenure at Ole Miss, where he posted a 111-82 record and guided the Rebels to the 2017 National Invitational Volleyball Championship title, the first postseason national championship for any program in the school's history. He has also coached at the University of Tulsa, University of Central Arkansas, and Lubbock Christian University. He has been married for 18 years to his lovely bride, Stacy, and they have three kids: Jackson (17), Mollie (14), and Nate (9) Taj Dashaun is an Author, Speaker, and Athlete Transition Coach. When his football career ended, Taj struggled heavily with depression. Because he was so focused on the game, he never fully developed a clear vision for his life. After several years of stumbling around in the emotional darkness of uncertainty, Taj began to take his eyes off of himself and focus on serving others. He now runs holistic programs for retired athletes who, like he once was, are struggling to adapt to life after the game. Not only does Taj help former players land jobs and start businesses, he helps them find fulfillment in every area of their lives. It's become his personal mission and passion to reach out and help others overcome the fear, frustration and uncertainty associated with life post-athletics. Taj is also the host of the Thrive After Sports podcast, which is available on all podcast platforms. Taj Dashaun is an author, motivational public speaker, and Athlete Transition Coach. When his football career ended, Taj struggled heavily with depression during a time where the vocabulary did not yet exist to discuss topics like this- especially for a Black, male athlete. Like many student-athletes, because he was so focused on the game, he never fully developed a clear vision for his life. Today's guest is Taj Dashaun, Athlete Career Transition Coach and host of the podcast Thrive After Sports. When Taj first stepped away from the game he loved he struggled heavily with depression. He had never fully developed a clear vision of his life after football. Taj knew he wanted to get a good job, make money, and be successful, but felt lost and overwhelmed having no idea how he would do that and what to do with his life.  After several years of stumbling around in the emotional darkness of uncertainty, Taj decided to move the focus away from himself and look to serving others. Once Taj found his focus he created an intensive program for retired athletes who are struggling to adapt to life after sports. It has become his mission and passion to reach out and help others overcome the fear, frustration, and uncertainty associated with life post athletics. Listen in and hear how Taj has helped athletes approach, navigate, and successfully move into the next phase of their lives. You will want to hear this episode if you are interested in... There are a ton of athletes out there, maybe you're one of them, who have dedicated their life to their sport. They have spent hours phyiscally training, practicing, studying film, etc. to optimize their potential to get to the highest level of what they do. Even when athletes do achieve the peak of their performance and get to the professional or olympic level, their career does come to an end in their 30's or 40's. The issue with this is that after ALL this dedication, they still have decades of life left and for most athletes who make it only to the college level, they are stuck without a lot of other options besides going into the "real world". Unfortunately, in a lot of instances, athletes do not know what to do after sports. They have not thought of the future, they haven't been told to think of the future, and they are left without much direction. This is exactly what Taj Dashaun helps athletes with and it's what we talk about on this podcast. We talk about creating new routines, finding your purpose, finding your new sport within life and how to kill it on a daily basis to win.
