This week we are bringing you content from the United Women in Faith Legislative Event. This is typically Texas Impact's biggest event of the year—and this year the UWF had record participation with 350 registrants from United Women in Faith and various other faith groups participating over the three day event with hundreds making Capitol visits to their Legislators. In this episode we share Bishop Cynthia Harvey's keynote address from Sunday evening–although Bishop Harvey notes that she doesn't do keynote addresses… she preaches. Bishop Harvey is the Bishop of both the Texas Annual Conference and the Rio Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, and previously served as the President of the United Methodist Council of Bishops. Bishop Harvey joins a chorus of faith leaders calling Texans of faith to action… to care for our neighbors and engage in the work of justice And, Texas Impact has tools and resources for you to do that work. Check out texasimpact.org and click on the Action Center to find out how you can get involved. Join the Rapid Response team to get updates on actions you can take and join our weekly Zoom on Mondays to learn more.
This week we are joined by Rev. Gregg Taylor and Rev. Melissa Maher at the Texas Annual Conference! We get an update from Rev. Taylor on his church in Minneapolis and we hear about how Rev. Maher has transitioned into a new and exciting role within the United Methodist Church.
Jim talks with Mike Whang about how his shift away from the traditional church model opened up avenues of ministry that can be limited for those in Christian leadership. Mike explains how working out the equations of ministry, the balancing of values, the realities of day to day life, and the needs of the Church, has been a challenge and a blessing as he grows in his walk with God and leadership position. Mike Whang is an ordained elder of the United Methodist Church. He serves Oikon and Wesley as an extension minister of the Texas Annual Conference. He received his M. Div from Duke Divinity School. His favorite foods are rice, kimchi, and eggs. Raised in Los Angeles, he and his wife, Lisa are raising native Texan daughters of Korean descent. The guests in this episode are ‘all in' with the church; they are dear friends of our host, Rev. Lisa Greenwood, who also happen to be Bishops in the United Methodist Church, Bishop Laura Merrill, and Bishop Janice Huie. In their conversation the three of them explore what has been meaningful about their friendship and how their friendship has impacted their leadership for the better, throughout their careers. They provide important insight into the critical role of vulnerability in friendship and how that means intentionally creating space for unlikely friendships, especially during challenging times. And they discuss how friendship is vital not only for us personally, but for the thriving of the church itself. Please enjoy and let us know what you think!Quotations"I'm in a holy friendship when I have both the desire and the energy and the willingness to be better, to be my best, truest self—that I want to, and I feel empowered to do so by that relationship."- Bishop Laura Merrill“[Sanctified friendship] is a time and a space and a relationship in which love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, gentleness—all those are expanded and make us more whole. This episode explores John Wesley and our perceptions of him. Wesley was the founder of Methodism and we have a perception of him as a man of action. Our guest, Ted Campbell, noted student of Wesley at Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, offers a more nuanced view that speaks to us in our 21st Century busyness. The Methodist Review article mentioned in the Podcast is HERE. (You will need to register to see article. The site is free). The Susan Cain book on Quiet and Introverts is HERE (and I used ubiquitous Amazon, you can always get somewhere else.) A quick summary of Dr. Campbell's credentials (from the Methodist Review article) are: "Ted A Campbell is the Albert C. Outler Professor of Wesley Studies at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University. A United Methodist elder in the Texas Annual Conference, Campbell has authored many works in Methodist history and ecumenical studies. His book, Encoding Methodism: Telling and Retelling Narratives of Wesleyan Origins (2017), won the 2018 Saddlebag Award from the United Methodist Historical Society for the best new book in Methodist history. Also in 2018 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society of the United Kingdom." The Mo Rocca piece from CBS on meetings mentioned during the Podcast is HERE. We saw that y'all loved the first two faith leader panels so much that today we are bringing you the third and final installment. If you missed the first two–first, you should go back and listen to them. These panels of religious leaders were part of Texas Impact's three Houston Faith Votes kick-off events, a partnership between local congregations and organizations in Houston working to increase civic engagement and voting, but the material from these conversations isn't Houston-specific. Hopefully they inspire all of us to engage our congregations in civic engagement work, and specifically to mobilize our congregations and communities to participate in every election. Spoiler–Texas Impact has tools for you to do that. Check out texasimpact.org or the materials from the Houston Faith Votes campaign at houstonfaithvotes.org. Here to inspire you to do that are the panelists from the August 27 faith leaders panel at Servants of Christ UMC: Bishop Cynthia Harvey Bishop of the Texas Annual Conference of the UMC Rev. Gil Rendle says in the intro that this conversation with Father Greg Boyle is “one of the richest conversations I've ever been in.” How grateful we are to have recorded this beautiful and rich back and forth between Gil, Rev. Lisa Greenwood, Father Boyle and Rev. Justin Coleman! Father Boyle's approach to gang intervention rehabilitation and re-entry at his organization Homeboy Industries is not really about providing services, although they do provide holistic services from education to tattoo removal. The real heart of the work is relationship and creating a culture of kinship, tenderness, and joy. Boyle returns again and again to the heart of God and the heart of Jesus, inviting us again and again to embrace our own belovedness and everyone else's belovedness. In this conversation… Gil shares the difference between the work of improving and the work of creating (01:06) The short game of trying experiments and the long game of deep institutional work (04:39) Father Boyle's vocational journey that led him to start Homeboy Industries (16:41) Providing services vs being in relationship (22:35) The theology that guides Father Boyle (31:58) When there is so much grief and pain, how do you not get caught up in a constant cycle of desolation? (36:54) Creating a culture of the Gospel (42:03) Why Father Boyle says “Gang members have taught me everything of value.” (50:41) QUOTES “We're always getting ahead of ourselves, right? Just about tomorrow or lamenting what I did yesterday. Ouch. Why did I say that? And as opposed to staying anchored in the present moment. I think that's where the joy is.” -Father Boyle [27:41] “Don't just look at the services. Look at the language that's being used. Look at the approach towards the other person.” -Rev. Coleman [48:54] Father Greg Boyle's bio Gregory Boyle is an American Jesuit priest and the founder of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, the largest gang-intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry program in the world. He has received the California Peace Prize and been inducted into the California Hall of Fame. In 2014, the White House named Boyle a Champion of Change. He received the University of Notre Dame's 2017 Laetare Medal, the oldest honor given to American Catholics. He is the acclaimed author of Tattoos on the Heart and Barking to the Choir. The Whole Language is his third book, and all net proceeds go to Homeboy Industries. Rev. Justin Coleman's bio Justin grew up in Texas, and attended Southern Methodist University, graduating in 2000 with a major in religious studies. He, too, was highly active in SMU's Wesley Foundation, and served as Associate Pastor at SMU's Wesley Foundation from 2001 to 2003 as he began seminary studies at SMU's Perkins School of Theology. Justin transferred to Duke Divinity School in 2003 and graduated with a Master of Divinity in 2005. Justin's first clergy appointment was to University UMC, as an intern in 2004 and then as Associate Pastor from 2005 to 2007. In 2007, Justin was called back to the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church, where he is an elder, and was appointed Associate Pastor at St. Luke's United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas. For six years from 2008 to 2014, Justin served as the Executive and Lead Pastor of the Gethsemane Campus of St. Luke's Church and led it through a remarkable period of growth in ministry and service to its community. From 2014 to June 2017 Justin served as the Chief Ministry Officer of the United Methodist Publishing House in Nashville, Tennessee. During this time, he has also continued to frequently offer lectures, sermons, and lead worship. RESOURCES & RELEVANT LINKS Read Gil Rendle's paper “Jacob's Bones” for free off our TMF website here. North Texas Annual Conference Update: Annual Conference refers both to the United Methodist congregations found in a particular local region, as well as the annual meeting of this group. Each annual conference is led by a bishop. Here is an update on what happened at the recent meeting of the North Texas Annual Conference held June 6-7, 2022.
It's Pentecost, once again. We are reminded that the Spirit is with us, once again and that miracles are possible, once again. Since that same Spirit is with us and that it never went away, we can know that things can always get better. We may feel like the world is getting away from us, but that is our own lack of faith in God. Pastor Trey, Sister Brandy, and Pastor Scott, live from the Texas Annual Conference, pull our eyes back to inherent optimism of the Christian faith.
Applying Jesus to New Vision - Interview with Rev. Dr. Tori Butler One of my favorite humans is talking with us today about her life in ministry and how to engage gender equality in the Church. We are joined by my preaching coach and pastoral mentor, Rev. Dr. Tori Butler. She is so special and just the best person to talk with at any point in time. Season 2 is intentionally different than Season 1. In this season, we are talking with folks hard at work re-imagining what it means to respond and reform the issues within our society. These conversations are going to help us, in the Church, re-imagine what it means to be a part of the solution - the Kin-Dom Come. About Rev. Dr. Tori Butler Rev. Dr. Tori Butler was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. She received a BA in History and International Relations from McDaniel College in Westminster, MD. She received her call to ministry following a semester abroad in Argentina. She is a graduate of the Divinity School at Duke University where she received her Master of Divinity degree. She was recruited out of Duke to serve in the Texas Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church where she ministered in three cross-cultural appointments as well as being the Chaplain at Wiley College. She was ordained by Bishop Janice Riggle Huie in 2014. By God's amazing grace and through tremendous perseverance on May 13, 2019, she received her Doctor of Ministry degree from Emory University with a concentration in Biblical Interpretation and Proclamation. Her Doctor of Ministry project is entitled, “The Power of Mourning: Creating Spaces of Vulnerability for Black Clergywomen to Lament and Holler. She recently had the honor of speaking at the 57th Anniversary of the March on Washington. Dr. Butler is a contributor to Do Not Be Afraid: Bishops & Young Clergy Share Signs of Resurrection & Words of Hope and I'm Black. I'm Christian. I'm Methodist. Her sermon entitled, “Holy Spirit, We Need You” was placed on a list of Anti-Racism Sermons in June of 2020 by Discipleship Ministries of The United Methodist Church. She contributed a devotion for the United Methodist Communications Lenten Devotional Series called, “Holy Saturday: Tarrying Together.” She has been a featured panelist for Emory University, Howard University, the Convocation of Black Pastors, and the General Commission on Religion and Race. Her passion is talking about how God uses lament to give voice to individual and communal pain and in the same breath gives voice to a God who is able to step into that pain and transform it into joy. The new joy of Dr. Butler's life happened on July 1, 2021. Rev. Dr. Tori Butler became the senior pastor of Asbury Town Neck United Methodist Church in Severna Park, Maryland where worship can't be explained but must be experienced! In this new role, she wants to invite people into a transformative encounter with the Holy Spirit. Her prayer is that all would know the healing, redeeming, and restorative love of God. Her calling is to help others discern their purpose, and get to their next level in life and in the Lord. Therefore, she seeks to honor God in everything that she does. Her goal in life is to be his hands and feet in the world. She sincerely prays that God will use her as a prophet, teacher, preacher, scholar, activist, evangelist, counselor, writer, shouter, and dancer all for the glory of God. Applying Jesus is hosted and produced by Amy Vogel, Director of Spiritual Growth for Upper Room Heights and our Technical Director is Xach Blunt. We record at the Chapelwood UMC Digital Studio in Houston, TX. We hope something you heard today deepened your faith, opened your eyes and led you to not only knowing God in a more expansive way, but shifts how you connect, especially with those who are easy to overlook.
