Farmers this year are growing less oilseed rape than they have for the last 30 years. That is partly due to the expense of growing it, the dreadful wet weather preventing crops getting established, and the fact that it succumbs to the Cabbage Stem Flea Beetle. A group in Scotland however are growing it organically - so how do they do it?Thatched buildings are a common sight in many rural areas, but a shortage of seasonal labour, materials and outdated machinery are some of the modern-day challenges facing a thatcher today, according to a report by Historic England which warns that the traditional industry could be at risk. And campaigners fighting for the clean-up of thousands of tonnes of illegally dumped waste in a Kent woodland are threatening legal action against the Environment Agency. What a delightfully drizzly day! You already got the tropical vacation vibe, but this feels like an extra gift. The rain gently tapping on the leaves is so relaxing. The sturdy woven reeds keep the moisture out, allowing you to simply enjoy the rhythm of the rain. You're on island time, feeling lazy and content. Get cozy and appreciate the downtime. Savor this moment. ---

A family holiday in Turkey turned into a nightmare for Elaine, Dean and Mike when strangers attempted to abduct one of their children; Home-owners explain how it is becoming increasingly impossible to get insurance on thatched properties
That was Matt Whelan and Phil Doran, two thatchers giving their view on the Thatched Cottage crisis. There are only 1,000 thatched cottages left in the country. Some owners can't get cover or are being quoted up to €8,500 and can't afford it so switch to a metal roof. There is now only one insurance company offering cover meaning some Irish owners could lose everything in a fire or storm. How important are thatched cottages for our history, heritage and tourism and what would it mean if they all disappeared? Henry McKean has been out and about for us visiting thatched cottage owners and he joins us now.
The owner of a 200 year-old thatched cottage at Carrowcrory in Ballinafad says its future is uncertain as no company will insure it. Claire Roche says it's a shame that such houses are in jeopardy because of this, and insists they need to be preserved
Recently Marion had a conversation with Neil Hewitt and Charles Chalcraft about surveying thatched properties and fire safety concerns involved in those surveys. Neil Hewitt is a Suffolk-based independent residential building surveyor who offers the RICS Building Survey. It is the highest level of survey offered under the RICS format that is particularly recommended for older properties. He specialises in older period properties, in particular local Suffolk timber frame and thatched houses. Charles Chalcraft is a retired master thatcher who is trained as a home inspector. He now trains property professionals including surveyors how to survey properties with thatched roofs. He specialises in building surveys on older properties - cob and stone rubble that are thatched. He is also the technical advisor to the Devon and Cornwall Master Thatchers Association. easygerman.fm/73 — Während Cari heute aus einer selbstgebauten Höhle auf Sylt aufnimmt, hat Manuel seinen Kleiderschrank in ein Tonstudio umfunktioniert. Manuel: [0:26] Wie machen denn Gespenster? Cari: [0:29] Huuuuh. Cari: [1:49] Also für mich klingst du sehr gut. (Reet.)
