The Art of Charm

Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Are you trying to understand the motivation behind someone's alleged actions? Here's an exercise from episode 651 guest Frank Sesno, author of Ask More: The Power of Questions to Open Doors, Uncover Solutions, and Spark Change. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: As a hypothetical scenario, imagine you're in charge of prosecuting someone charged with plagiarism. Simply asking if the subject is guilty is pointless -- they've already denied it. Instead, write down ten questions that are less directly confrontational. Examples: Why would somebody possibly do something like this? Why spend time doing something like this? Who would have the resources to do something like this? What resources do you think this person might have used? Would this have been difficult to do if you had been guilty and done it? Who might have wanted to make it look like you did it? What other plausible explanations are there? Asking these kinds of questions is a great way to figure out someone's motivations as well as getting them to build a narrative for you. Coming up with these types of questions -- even if you don't end up needing to ask them -- helps you think inside, outside, and underneath for a more complete picture of any scenario. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Finish: Give Yourself the Gift of Done author Jon Acuff rejoins us (hear his most recent full episode here) to discuss why he's more productive on an airplane and how he recreates the conditions to make him as productive when he's home. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: From feedback and personal experience, Jon Acuff noticed that we tend to be more productive when we're traveling. Since we can't travel all the time, he was determined to recreate the conditions that influence this behavior. Here's what he came up with. Because of physical restrictions, you can only bring a limited amount of work. White noise helps you focus. Limited Internet connectivity keeps you from unnecessary distractions. Focus-driving deadlines result from breaks in the routine (waiting in the terminal, boarding, flying, landing, waiting to deboard). These work roughly like the Pomodoro Technique. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Marsha Shandur of Yes Yes Marsha rejoins us (check out her full episode here) with ways we can harness emotions for powerful storytelling -- and what to leave out for better effect. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Telling a good story well literally floods your listener's brain with dopamine (which helps with information processing) and oxytocin (which makes them trust you more). Contrary to popular belief, it's not usually the addition of too many details that ruins good storytelling; it's not including enough of the right details. What are the right details? How living through the story made you feel -- the emotions the experience generated. As we share the story with others, tuning them in to these emotions allows them to better relate. Beginning a story with an action sequence (as Marsha demonstrates) places an information gap that helps build tension and keeps people paying attention. Internal monologue describing how events made us feel and naming the emotions experienced keep the listener hooked. Pinpointing where in the body we felt these emotions adds a visceral element that makes the story even more relatable. No spoilers -- as with our favorite television shows, we want tension to build without the ending being given away. This week, practice telling your friends short true stories in which you include how you felt when you were living them. Make sure to check out Marsha's page for AoC listeners with an exercise and extra help by which you can learn to harness emotions for powerful storytelling! Find it here. This time around, we talk about how to curate the influence of people around us so we put control in our own hands rather than those of random circumstance. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Often attributed to Jim Rohn is the sentiment that we are the average of the five people with whom we spend the most time. If this is true, how can we curate these influences to be positive rather than negative? Make a list of who's getting the most face time in your life and why. Keeping a calendar or journal that details what we do every day -- from social events to work -- helps. Evaluate areas on the list that could stand improvement. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This time around, Tinker Dabble Doodle Try: Unlock the Power of the Unfocused Mind author Dr. Srini Pillay rejoins us to talk about a process known as psychological halloweenism -- the act of taking on an alternative mindset as a way of unlocking creative potential. If you like this Minisode Monday, make sure to check out our full episode with Dr. Pillay here! Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: You don't have to be a little kid to benefit from the rewards of playing make-believe. We all tend to think of ourselves in one way -- we're good at some things and less adept at others. What happens when we mentally pretend to see the world from the perspective of someone else? Someone who, for instance, we imagine to be more creative than us? This is called psychological halloweenism, and it can be a powerful way to solve problems and cope with situations we feel ill-prepared (as ourselves) to deal with. "If you think like somebody else," says Dr. Pillay, "you will get yourself out of your own mental traps, your own habits, and you will begin to think from somebody else's perspective." Practice psychological halloweenism at the dinner table, at innovation meetings at work, or with your friends. You'll be surprised at what you can discover about your own mind's capabilities when you try to think like somebody else. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This time around, we examine how even the negative emotions we experience originate as positive intentions on behalf of our subconscious brain -- and how we might use this knowledge to understand and better process them. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Our subconscious communicates with our conscious mind using emotions. Every emotion, no matter how unpleasant, has a positive intent. Sometimes the connection between what we feel and why we feel it isn't obvious. This week, any time you experience a negative emotion, stop for a second and try to connect the dots -- imagine what the positive intention your subconscious brain is trying to communicate might be. Once we determine the positive intent, we can take the proper action to truly process this emotion. When you agree to meet with someone for the first time -- whether it's over coffee to discuss a startup idea or over martinis for recruitment to your counterintelligence team -- you should be prepared. The Code of Trust: An American Counterintelligence Expert's Five Rules to Lead and Succeed author Robin Dreeke rejoins us to share some of his strategies for first meetings. If you like what you hear here, make sure to check out our full show with Robin here. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Know their generation. The time in which we grow up informs how we see the world. Baby boomers have a very different point of reference from millennials. Keep a truth. Robin wears a Darth Vader watch -- a prop that has authentic meaning to him and tends to spark conversation. It "builds affiliation through a commonality," he says. Let them choose the time for your meeting. You may have to reject it if there's a conflict, but it shows you don't take their time for granted and it empowers them with choice. Get there on time. The reasons you don't want to arrive late shouldn't have to be explained, but arriving too early is a signal that you're there for your reasons -- not theirs. Minisode Monday #71 | How Does Your Pet See the World?

The Art of Charm

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 18, 2017 3:10

This Minisode Monday, we try an exercise designed to make you consider the importance of perspective and useful illusions: how does your pet see the world? The Cheat Sheet: As we've learned from conversations with David Eagleman, Isaac Lidsky, and Jason Silva, reality differs by how it is perceived. If that sounds like woo-woo nonsense, try to consider how the world with which you interact every day is experienced by others. If you were to gain the magical ability to ask a dog, a cat, and a dust mite to describe the world around them, what kind of answers would you expect? The dog sees in black and white. The cat would strongly advocate for the safety of tiny boxes and high places. The dust mite's entire world might be the inside of your mattress -- something with which you interact every day, but have probably never seen (unless you really need a new mattress). The version of the world you would describe back to them would be just as varied, biased, flawed, and seemingly inaccurate. Though biased and flawed, places where our realities -- constructed by our senses and perceptions -- overlap create a useful illusion that keeps us from constantly running into each other. Still, we need to remember that our reality is not a hundred percent of someone else's reality. Instead of rejecting someone else's reality because it doesn't match your experience, try adopting their perspective to understand their differences. Start bending your own reality instead of trying to bend the reality of others to fit your fiction. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. When something goes wrong in our lives, sometimes we fixate on its emotional impact -- how it makes us feel in the moment -- rather than what difference it will make in the long run (which may be minimal). Make sure to check out his entire episode: The Power of the Unfocused Mind, and his other Minisode Monday:  Dabbling: Not Just for Dilettantes! The Cheat Sheet: When something goes wrong in your life, ask yourself: is this important, or just traumatic? We can gauge this by using the CIRCA mnemonic. C: Chunking. Break down the problem into its component parts; solve it over a period of time. I: Ignore mental chatter. Observe your thoughts; don't become your thoughts. R: Reality check. Remind yourself that "this too shall pass." C: Control check. Is the problem something you actually have a hand in, or is it something like weather or politics? A: Attention shift. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. Tinker Dabble Doodle Try: Unlock the Power of the Unfocused Mind author Dr. Srini Pillay rejoins us to talk about how we can benefit from the seemingly meandering path of dabbling to unlock creativity and make useful connections between disparate interests. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: If you're only looking forward and focusing on a task you've set out to tackle, your brain is only using a small portion of its resources. To access the rest, understand the power of dabbling. We need regular distractions from our primary course of action -- like hobbies. If you engage in a hobby for one hour a day, you can prolong life and protect your brain from dementia. Hobbies also trigger the brain's unfocused mode, which activates your creative circuits and helps you make connections you might otherwise miss. It was by this dabbling that Steve Jobs applied what he learned in calligraphy class to create fonts for Apple. This week, make sure to listen to Dr. Srini Pillay's full episode on harnessing the power of your unfocused mind and give some thought to how it can help you connect your own disparate interests. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This time around, we discuss how going just a little out of your way to make someone else's day better has more mileage than any minor inconvenience you may experience in that fleeting moment. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: It's easy to ignore small tasks that someone else usually takes care of. But what happens when we take a minor detour from our own routine to help lighten someone else's load? As we soon discover, doing the hard thing isn't usually that hard. As Jocko Willink might agree, this is a form of taking ownership (though perhaps not as extreme as some of his own examples). Doing small favors takes little effort, but results in big appreciation. Find an opportunity to go above and beyond this week -- whether it's cleaning up after a clumsy pet, washing the dishes, or sweeping the neighbor's walkway -- doing the hard thing is easy. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. This time we examine why being an amateur sometimes works to your advantage when you're tackling a problem that all the experts say is unsolvable. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: When you're an amateur trying to solve a problem, you don't know what doesn't work. Contrast this with an expert who approaches that same problem as someone who usually has all the answers. When an expert is stumped, the problem remains unsolved. But the amateur, not knowing any better, can often approach the problem from an angle the expert never even considered. Where repetition numbs the expert, an amateur's relative incompetence begets innovation. Welcome to Minisode Monday, where we kick off the week with something quick and actionable -- to make you more magnetic and effective -- that you can implement right away. In this Minisode Monday, friend and former guest Cole Hatter of Thrive (September 29th-October 1st, 2017 in Las Vegas -- use promo code AOC at checkout for a big, big discount if you're planning on going) joins us to explain how we can ensure we're making the best decisions by using absolute truths to guide us. Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: We're all the products of our decisions -- so how do we ensure we're making the right decisions that will benefit us in the long run? Create absolute truths -- core values or beliefs -- in relationships, career, health, and spirituality. These absolute truths act as compasses toward which we align our decisions. Acknowledge which of these two types of decisions we're making: inconsequential or defining moments. When you come to a defining moment, ask: a) What are my options? and b) What are the possible outcomes? Then choose the outcome most congruent with your absolute truths. Even if this process forces you to make tough choices, it should keep you from making regrettable ones. As Cole says, it helps us avoid "making a long-term decision to solve a short-term problem." Never let it be said that The Art of Charm would discourage you from being the best you can be. But have you considered the merits of lowering the bar? Let's get to it! The Cheat Sheet: Setting your bar for success too high can result in the opposite of the desired effect. Rather than putting yourself in the path of a disempowering emotional state, consider the merits of lowering the bar. Focusing on goals that are far away or can only be experienced in a distant (or alternative) future means we never really experience rewards for our efforts. Instead of saying something like, "I'll be happy when I'm thin and muscular," say, "I'll be happy when I go to the gym." Immediately achievable goals set by a lower bar are far more effective in getting you to your desired target emotion than the cycle of failure triggered by a bar set too high. This Minisode Monday, we examine how even the most reliable news sources and documentary makers skew the facts or present half-truths when reporting -- often unintentionally -- we just don't notice it unless it happens to be about something with which we're already familiar. It's a reminder to always consider multiple sources if we want to be truly informed on any subject. The Cheat Sheet: We all get news from somewhere. But how do we know our sources are reputable? The truth is, even with the best of intentions, every journalist gets it wrong sometimes -- because nobody's an expert at everything. Chances are pretty good you've been aghast at poor media coverage of a subject in which you consider yourself well informed -- at least once in the entire time you've been consuming news and documentaries. Watch a media production by a news agency or a journalist about a subject in which you are an expert. Take note of the gaps in the coverage. We tend to notice such gaps when we have a good grasp on the subject itself; consider the stories about things we know very little about and understand that there are probably just as many gaps -- before getting riled up, outraged, or moved to action without weighing separate sources on the subject.
