One of the most challenging diagnoses to receive is "dementia." When we hear that word, it brings up uncertainty, fear, anger, and so many other emotions. My guest today is going to speak about those emotions and what to do if you, or someone you love, is experiencing cognitive loss. Anne Kenny, MD, is a geriatric and palliative care physician as well as the bestselling author of True North: A Guided Journal for Those Living with Cognitive Loss or Dementia about Legacy, Love and Wishes for the End of a Life Well-lived. Not only has Anne worked with this population in her profession, but she also became the caregiver to her mother who lived well with, and died peacefully from, dementia. She co-wrote the book with Teresa Webb, RN, a woman living with Frontotemporal Dementia and advocate and spokesperson for individuals living with dementia, combine their voices to offer a guide for persons experiencing cognitive loss to begin to explore their thoughts and wishes about their life and to prepare for the changes that dementia will bring. The book guides the reader, using the voices of others who live or have lived with dementia and stories of many others who have faced dementia, to see and plan for the deeper and more valued connections and discussions. It is full of advice, key learning and action plans to assist in providing tangible steps that can be taken to value life and plan for the life changes. I know you will enjoy this conversation, so sit back and listen in as Dr. Anne Kenny shares her story. ------------------------------- Anne Kenny, MD is a geriatric and palliative care physician, author of Making Tough Decisions about End-of-Life Care in Dementia, and Founder of Together in Dementia, a blog and educational and coaching/consulting resource to support individuals living with dementia and their families to modify their approach to dementia care so that they can find joy, connection and calm in this difficult, but often beautiful, journey. Her 35 years of experience as a physician and added experience as a daughter caregiver to her mother who lived well with and died peacefully from dementia provide a unique approach to care in dementia.

The God of the Bible: Comfort for Those Living in a Fallen World (Psalm 139) - Dr. Bill Cook
We live in a world broken by sin. One manifestation of brokenness is found in those living with disabilities. God shows great affection for the lost, including those who live with brokenness the blind, lame, crippled, etc. It behooves us to ask how we can more effectively respond to this vast and often forgotten population. We ask, How can the church share the Good News with people whose intellectual capacities are affected by disability ? First we affirm that all people are fallen and need redemption in Christ. People who live with disability are no different. We cannot assume they are automatically accepted by God apart from faith in Christ. But we must understand that the range of intellectual disability includes some who can express faith, and others who cannot. Second, for those whose developmental disability allows them to understand, we must contextualize the Good News in ways they can grasp. If they can express faith, however simply, we must help them do so. Romans 10:9 models this simplicity. Gods people must work carefully to communicate essential aspects of faith in Christ in easily understandable terms for those with mental disability. But another difficult question arises concerning those whose intellectual capacity does not allow them to express faith in a verbal manner. Jesus teaching John 15 and Pauls 1 Corinthians 7 offer a way for including in Gods community those whose brokenness is more severe and limiting. This Postmodern Realities episode is a conversation with JOURNAL author Michael S. Beates about his coauthored CHRISTIAN RESEARCH JOURNAL article Retelling the Old, Old Story Sharing the Gospel with Those Living with Disability.

Encouragement for Those Living
Lori La Bey, Host of Alzheimer's Speaks Radio talks with Geert Bettinger, an author from the Netherlands, Truthful Loving Kindness and Harry Urban both who are living with dementia..Tru addresses the fact that she has not ben able to be involved with radio as she needs to read lips and see faces when talking. So the benefit of Alzheimer's Speaks Radio using a platform which offers a video platform for her to participate in, opens doors for her advocacy. We may or may not post the video as the audio can be mined and used only as well. Harry discussing the international programs he is involved with even though he can't speak their language, he has found whys to communicate and develop close relationships. On That Great Day 1st Thessalonians 4:13-18 Those Who Have No Hope Hope is in retreat in a world "too sophisticated" for faith There was an inscription in Thessalonica which read: “After death, no reviving, after the grave, no meeting again.” A typical inscription on a grave: ‘I was not, [then] I became, [now] I am not, [and] I care not.’ Is that so different from today? The members of the church at Thessalonica were surrounded by this, had grown up hearing this, and their hearts were troubled by this. The Gospel of Hope Against this, Paul offered them Hope in Christ Paul, who proclaimed to the Athenians in Acts 7:31 that the proof of the Gospel was the resurrection of Jesus. That is worth our consideration: Mohammed is in his tomb, as is the Buda, but not Jesus of Nazareth, for His tomb is empty Paul told the Christians at Thessalonica that he did not want them to be uninformed, and "grieve as others do who have no hope." He is not saying "do not grieve." Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus! He is saying that our grief should be mingled with HOPE. And that hope is of reunion! On That Great Day! Verses 14-17: The Rapture verses Books have been written, movies have been made, but while the method of our reunion is important, Paul tells us the reason even mentions it in verse 18: "encourage one another with these words." The Dead in Christ are Resurrected Elsewhere Paul had said that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. In verse 14, "through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died," those who have been "absent from the body." And in verse 16, "For the Lord himself... will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first." At that moment the promise is fulfilled, that what was sown perishable, is raised imperishable, never to die again. Those Living in Christ are Changed Verse 17: "Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them..." "Listen, I will tell you a mystery! We will not all die, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed." - 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 A Completed Reunion! Verse 17: "Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever." No more tears of reunion in Heaven while tears of parting on Earth. The Shadows are over. Now comes the Morning! Let no one steal your Hope Let us give the last word to Peter (which no doubt would have made him happy) Does this sound at all familiar? "I want to remind you that in the last days scoffers will come, mocking the truth and following their own desires. They will say, “What happened to the promise that Jesus is coming again? From before the times of our ancestors, everything has remained the same since the world was first created.” 2 Peter 3:3b-4 (NLT) "But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent. " 2 Peter 3:8-9 (NLT) Less than two days since Jesus arose? Yes, we still have our sure and certain hope!
