100 years ago, nobody cared about Ukraine – or its disappearance as an independent state – swallowed up as the newly born tyranny of the USSR flexed its imperial muscles; but that has now changed. Putin's Russian World revanchism and violence have accelerated the evolution of Ukrainian identity and increased the pressure for social, political, and economic change. Perhaps the most perverse Russian invasion narrative, is that Ukraine is not old, and is not distinct from Russia in any case. But Ukraine is not just a footnote to Russian imperial history. As a nation, it is old, different, and diverse. And at the end of this war, Ukraine could prove to be the rock upon which the decrepit, brittle hull of the Russian imperial ship tears itself apart and sinks from history. ---------- Olha Mukha is a culturologist, academic editor and compiler, project manager and curator in the sphere of culture and education, civil rights and freedoms activist. She was born on 31 March 1981 in Lviv. Olha has been the curator of congresses, committees and new centres of PEN International (London, UK) since 2018. Chairwoman of the Lviv: UNESCO's City of Literature Office (2014–2017), co-founder of Ukrainian Association of Culturologists in Lviv (Program Director since 2019) and Academic Religious Studies Workshop (since 2004). Member of the British Society of Aesthetics. She taught at the Franko National University (2003–2011) in Lviv and Drahomanov National Pedagogical University (2011–2018) in Kyiv. Since 2008 she has been curator of a number of academic and cultural projects (i.a.,Religious Scholar's Handbook, Human in Contemporary World, Narrative War, Tolerance in Theory and Practice, Kitsch Angels, History of Ukrainian Culture in Achievements and Victories, Basia in the City of Literature multiplication series, and others). She is expert counseling at Territory of Terror Museum (since 2017) and member of editorial board at Religious Essays Journal. Fediv explains that "culture" includes perceptions about Ukraine, its values, and its people, and she outlines Ukraine's cultural resurgence since gaining independence from the Soviet Union and after Russia's initial invasion of Ukraine in 2014. Fediv proposes that Ukraine has "two battlefields": the war with Russia and the war with the old Ukrainian system that the new generation of Ukrainians are reforming. For Erika's mom, who fled Ukraine as a child with her family after World War II, ballet was an important of their culture.“In Kyiv, (Ukraine), and in Russia, ballet is almost like the movies here," says Erika. "The state really supports ballet. Little schoolchildren are brought to see productions. And so, I think that my mother's father instilled this respect for ballet in my mother.”Erika went on to have a long career in ballet. Now, she's a development coordinator on the major gifts team with University Development and Alumni Relations at UC Berkeley. Георгій Нарбут був творцем українського державного герба й печаті, грошових купюр і поштових марок української держави після падіння Російської імперії. Паперові гривні, поштові марки УНР, печатка та герб часів Гетьманату, дизайн меблів для державного сенату — все це створив Георгій Нарбут. Він виграв конкурс на кращий ескіз українських паперових грошей. Оформлюючи купюру, художник застосував орнаменти в дусі українського бароко XVII—XVIII ст., декоративні шрифти, зображення самостріла (герб Київського магістрату XVII – XVIII століть) і знака князя Володимира — тризуба, який згодом став державним гербом України. ін також є автором перших марок Української Народної Республіки. In this podcast, host Volodymyr Yermolenko welcomes Yulia Fediv, the executive director of the Ukrainian Cultural Foundation. The conversation is focused on recent trends in the Ukrainian culture, Ukrainian creative class, current cultural renaissance, and the new ecosystem of Ukrainian cultural institutions.

Mykola Lysenko (1842- 1912) is the father of modern Ukrainian classical music. His prolific life’s work laid the foundation for the further development and expansion of Ukrainian musical culture. He influenced a large group of Ukrainian composers, including Stetsenko, Stepovyi, Leontovych, Koshyts, and Liudkevych. A compilation of Lysenko’s works in 22 volumes was published in Kyiv in 1950–59.Lysenko was a composer, ethnomusicologist, pianist, and conductor. He studied at the Kharkiv and Kyiv universities and, later, at the Leipzig Conservatory under Reinicke and Richter (1867–69). From 1874 to 1876 he studied orchestration under Rimsky-Korsakov in St. Petersburg. In 1904, he founded his own School of Music and Drama in Kyiv. The list of Lysenko’s operatic compositions include Black Sea Cossacks (1872); three operas based on the works of the Ukrainian writer Mykola Hohol – Christmas Night (1873–82), The Drowned Maiden (1883) and Taras Bulba (1890); and the operettas Natalka from Poltava (1889) and Aeneas (1911). Himself a well-known pianist, Lysenko composed a piano sonata, two rhapsodies, a suite, a scherzo and a rondo, as well as an abundance of smaller pieces, including songs without words, nocturnes, waltzes and polonaises. He also wrote a number of works for strings. Of the Ukrainian composers, Lysenko was the most committed to the art song genre. Adapting Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky’s 1911 novel, Sergei Parajanov created a masterpiece unrivalled even to this day. Like the novel, he was inspired by the traditional culture and folklore of the Hutsul people of the Carpathian Mountains, infusing it with symbolic and impressionistic colour, sound and fury. His determination to tell the story this way – eschewing the socialist realism mandated by the communist government – landed him in a Soviet gulag, branded a dissident. Despite this, as Roger Ebert noted in his 1978 review, the film won “almost every award in sight on the 1964 film festival circuit” (and even inspired Carl Sagan, whose book with Ann Druyan is named after the film). Bogdan Rudnytski interviewed world renowned Ukrainian bandurist Dr Victor Mishalow. The internationally recognised master of the bandura born in Sydney nearly 60 years ago. Victor Mishalow graduated from the Sydney University with a major in music. He continued studies at the Kyiv Conservatory and in February 2009 was awarded a PhD at the Kharkiv State Academy of Culture. Victor Mishalow began studying the bandura, a 68 stringed Ukrainian folk instrument, with Peter Deriashnyj and Hryhory Bazhul in Sydney. In 1978 he received grants and scholarships from the Australia Council for the Arts and the NSW Premier’s Department to undertake advanced studies in bandura in North America. In 1979 he received a scholarship to study at the Kyiv Conservatory, Ukraine. Mr Mishalow has performed widely throughout Australia, North America, South America and Europe. He has numerous recordings and books to his credit. When Erika Johnson was 7, her Ukrainian mom put her in ballet class. Although Erika didn’t have the body that most principal dancers were known for, she had the work ethic that it took to be successful. "It was never like, ‘I must handpick you and cultivate you like a rose,’ says Erika. "You know it was like, ‘If you work hard, you might get a job.’ And I was like, ‘Okay, well I’m going to work hard.’” Shaped by her ballet career, Erika is now a development associate at Berkeley. On Friday, 28 February 2014 renowned scholar George Grabowicz (Harvard) delivered the Twelfth Annual Stasiuk Lecture in Contemporary Ukrainian Studies at the University of Cambridge. His presentation, part of Cambridge's Shevchenko2014.org bicentennial celebration, was entitled 'Taras Shevchenko: The Making of the National Poet.' George Grabowicz is the Dmytro Cyzevs’kyj Professor of Ukrainian Literature at Harvard University. Among his most well-known publications are The Poet as Mythmaker: A Study of Symbolic Meaning in Taras Sevcenko (Harvard UP, 1982) and Toward a History of Ukrainian Literature (Harvard UP, 1981).
