The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
Hosted by Chris Beckett & Shane Ludtke, two amateur astronomers in Saskatchewan. actualastronomy@gmail.com Dennis wrote: Just was listening to the October observing podcast and heard you hoping for a list of single transits of Jupiter. Sky and Telescope magazine publishes a complete list of transits and occultations each month. JR wrote: Hi Chris and Shane, I blame you guys! I'm not one to make an impulse buy, especially when it comes to astronomy gear, but after stumbling on this Cloudy Nights thread and listening to your discussions about the 50mm Borg, I broke out the credit card tonight… Bill Wrote: Sorry guys but there won't be any observation from me for that night. I'll be in Whistler BC for the Fungus Among Us mushroom Festival. I'll be helping out with the elementary school presentations and forest walks. I'm excited but hoping it starts to rain so there's more to show. Drought is bad here… John wrote: Dear Chris and Shane, I want to thank you both for fanning the flames of my old love, observing. When I was a kid I spent many hours… (wait for it)…"going out under the stars" with my department store refractor and then an 8” Celestron Schmidt Cassegrain that was generously lent to me by a friend of my Dad's. After that scope went back to its owner life crowded out optical observing. Until recently… We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs. 304: TEAM-CBT, Spirituality, and Beyond: Featuring Angela Poch Rhonda begins today's podcast, as usual, by reading two touching emails from podcasts fans, including Coach Teddy, who said that Podcasts 295 and 296 featuring live work with Zeina were incredible, and Carol who was equally enthusiastic about Podcast 297 (on “Homework—Yuck!). Carol also strongly recommends David's book, Ten Days to Self-Esteem which is a simplified version of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy that can be used as a manual for therapy or self-help groups. https://www.amazon.com/Days-Self-Esteem-David-Burns-M-D/dp/0688094554 Today, we interview Angel Poch, a certified life coach, registered professional counselor, and certified Level 4 TEAM therapist and trainer. She lives two hours north of Glacier National Park in British Columbia, but teaches therapists and treats people virtually from around the world. Her new booklet, “The Truth Shall Set You Free,” integrates TEAM-CBT with a Christian perspective and is available for free on her website. https://www.angelapoch.com/. She is a regular in David's weekly virtual psychotherapy training group at Stanford and assists in the teaching. She has also worked tirelessly and selflessly behind the scenes making David's work way more accessible to lay people as well as mental health professionals wanting to learn more about TEAM-CBT. For example, she adds links to every new Feeling Good Podcast on David's website, so you can easily find and link to more than 300 podcasts. Check it out! She has also transformed a massive amount of David's work into electronic tools for shrinks, accessible in David's online shop: Recently, she has created two amazing new documents you can link to. One is a spreadsheet that lists 138 of David's TEAM-CBT tools and techniques, like the “Anti-Procrastination Sheet” and many others, with page links to the descriptions of how to use each tool in David's books, like Feeling Good, Feeling Great, David's TEAM-CBT therapist eBook, and many others. Check it out! This data base will be invaluable to interested lay people, therapists, and teachers who want clear instructions on how to use the Daily Mood Log, Relationship Journal, and numerous additional tools and techniques. Derek Gurney and Angela are working on an equally awesome database for the Feeling Good Podcasts: Check it out as well! Angela begins her personal statement in today's podcast by describing her struggles with depression and irritability, including some very dark days in 2006. Her doctor recommended an SSRI antidepressant, and she went to integrative health program, “Depression: the Way Out” that required participants to read Feeling Good https://www.amazon.com/Feeling-Good-New-Mood-Therapy/dp/0380810336 Although she didn't love the book, she resonated with the idea that all of our feelings, positive and negative, result from our thoughts, or perceptions, and her depression cleared up. She liked that when she read Feeling Good, she got many new tools she could use to change her negative thoughts and feelings. She also appreciated the ideas in the book didn't go against her belief system, which many fear about psychology. David pointed out his own father, a Lutheran minister, worried about this, and was very suspicious of psychiatrists. Angela's thinking, which resonates with David's, is that the core ideas of religion and psychotherapy are actually high compatible, and even synergistic. Angela explains that when she was a young child, she didn't fit in socially or even in her own skin. “I felt like I was a boy in a woman's body. I felt like I was in the wrong body, and prayed for help.” She started to see in a very limited, childlike way, her thoughts were distorted, that a body was just a body and she could trust God wouldn't give her more than she could bear. These new realistic, counter thoughts relieved the negative body dysmorphia she'd been struggling with. She reports, “I decided it was okay to be flawed and not fit in.” The rest of her young childhood was mostly joyful. In middle school she was the target of mean-spirited bullying because she was a tomboy. She developed intense social anxiety and was relieved when her mom took her out of school. She was homeschooled for a few years and studied Karate to exercise and develop some confidence. High school brought new challenges. She describes responding with her version of the Five Secrets of Effective Communication to an aggressive bully who threatened her with brass knuckles and challenged her to fight her. However, the girl backed off and started telling people that Angela was her friend! After a bad relationship, Angela started to struggle with depression and described her suicide attempt when she was 18 because “I wanted the pain to stop.” She explains that: I met my husband, moved home, and started reading the Bible. I was impressed by the passage, “the truth shall set you free.” I realized I had to control my own thoughts rather than look for the approval of others, but she still didn't totally recovery from my anxiety. The cognitive piece in Feeling Good helped Angela a lot. She states, “I pursued a lot of careers, never holding down a job for more than 6 months, and one day someone asked if I'd considered a career in counseling. . .” She went on to take one of David's four-day live intensives in Whistler BC where she learned TEAM-CBT and hasn't looked back since! After learning and applying TEAM, Angela was able to crush her social and other anxieties. Angela has a deep love for her Creator and has done a great deal of thought about the integration of her Christian faith with TEAM-CBT. David also has a strong interest in the overlap between TEAM-CBT and virtually all religions and spiritual paths. He described an unusual and overpowerful spiritual experience he had as a medical student crossing the Nevada desert that made a strong impact on him. Angela would like to mention, “I have a profound gratitude for David's work. He makes things so clear and relatable. His approach is applicable to all faiths or no faith if one is truly ready to give up their negative thoughts and feelings. As we aim for the truth, and let go of the so called “self,” we find peace and joy. I will forever be indebted to him because I would not be able to help people without TEAM and that brings me joy every day!” I, David, would like to thank Angela for her intense and tireless devotion to helping spread the “gospel” of TEAM-CBT in so many ways! Thanks for listening today! Angela, Rhonda, and David I

This weeks guest is Alie Kudoba who is currently the head Bartender at The Bauer Kitchen in Waterloo, Ontario. Born and raised in Kitchener Ontario, Alie got her start in the industry as a barista at Second Cup while still in high school. It was Alie's first test of a fast paced customer service environment. At that point in time, Alie realized she enjoyed the challenge of making drinks beautifully but also with speed and efficiency. Alie eventually moved on to Molly Blooms in Kitchener, where she started serving and bartending. Alie worked with the greatest people at that little dive bar which included one of her very best friends still to this day. After two years at Molly Blooms, Molly and a couple of her friends moved out to Whistler, British Columbia together. At the time, Whistler would not hire anyone in the industry without a minimum of 3 years serving/bartending experience, so Alie settled for another barista job. During her time in Whistler, Alie met an Australian boy, and decided to move to his home town on the Sunshine Coast of Queensland Australia. While in Australia, Alie got a job working at a fine dining restaurant on the beach. Eventually, the Australian romance fizzled out, and Alie moved back to Whistler BC. Now that Alie finally had 3 years of serving and bartending experience, Alie was hired at Earls Whistler in the dead season of summer. However, her job did not start until September. Running low on funds, Alie reached out to her mom. Her mom's advice was to move back to Ontario and live at home and save up some money until Alie could go back out west on her own dime. Alie's plan was to work at The Bauer Kitchen in Waterloo for 6 months and then move back to Whistler. However, while working at The Bauer Kitchen, Alie met the love of her life. Being close to home and family and with a new romance, Alie decided to end her backpacking plans, and call Kitchener-Waterloo her home. Alie has now been working at The Bauer Kitchen for 8 years now. During the early stages of the covid lockdown, Alie has also started her own side hustle. Under the name “Alchemist Alie” - she started hosting online mixology courses through zoom, paired with cocktail kits and bar tools. From there, she gained private bartending gigs and is now venturing into bottled cocktails with a friend who owns The Grazing Table in KW. You can find Alie on instagram at @alchemist.alie. Dr Cayleff wrote Wash and Be Healed: The Water-Cure Movement and Women's Health before spending over ten years researching and writing an extraordinary history on naturopathic medicine - Nature's Path, a History of Naturopathic Healing in America. From the Introduction, "Late nineteenth century naturopaths were an eclectic collection of firebrands who, despite their vast differences, openly loathed many changes taking place in medicine at that time."I just LOVE these books and loved talking to Cayleff. Turns out we were at the same national conference in Whistler BC when I gave my first major talk, "Triage in Treating Sexual Abuse Survivors." This episode dovetails with the release of my book, Surviving a Viral Pandemic Through the Lens of a Naturopathic Medical Doctor. Order it from Amazon or through your local bookstore.

Currently Brian is the Director of Operations at Whitecap Risk and Safety Consultants, a company that specialises in ambitious projects in both sets and remote wilderness settings. Meet Austin! Former high level hockey player, CrossFit athlete, coach at Opus Athletics, home of Whistler, BC. He does remote coaching and individual program design from the average person to the athlete. Did I mention he loves coaching?... As Austin puts it in one of his IG posts, “ it started out accidentally with a few contacts through the gym. Then it grew. Then I decided to take the OPEX coaching program to learn and grow more with individual design coaching. Now, it excites me more than ever when someone wants remote coaching. I love the connection, as well as being the guide to helping someone improve their health and fitness. It’s amazing! And it’s an easy process.” ~Austin This episode might intrigue other coaches. When you feel passionate about making relationships and connections with your clients, your forever building yourself as an individual by furthering your training and maybe considering hiring their own coach to guide them through this process. Learning what an individual needs to create a healthy platform takes a lot of research, strategizing and collaborating. Being that everybody’s recipe is going to look different it keeps us coaches on our game. To start with creating this platform is by finding out what our clients goals are. Then at that point the journey begins. Listen to what Austin’s specialty is when it comes to programming. It’s important to keep it simple but there’s 6 ✌

“How successful I am in life, is the quality of connection I have with the individuals that matter most to me. It's not a quantitative accomplishment...but that's one of the things that I have in my life that makes me feel accomplished and that I'm the most proud of.“ – James Knull James Knull hails from Edmonton Alberta and is a long-time REIN Member, real estate investor and realtor. He started investing over 11 years ago and founded his business, Mogul Realty Group, to create an environment for exceptional real estate services with an emphasis on personalized goal achievement. James now owns over 250 doors in Edmonton and has become an award-winning realtor in Edmonton. James' achievements can be directly attributed to his systems, goals, accountability and critical reflection but even more importantly, his connections, collaborations and the relationships he mindfully creates with his friends and family. In addition to real estate, James has a passion for downhill skiing, and you may also find him training at the gym for his next Spartan race, marathon or triathlon. James works hard, plays hard and lives well. [06:45] The support of his parents allowed James to explore what made him happiest. But it was his brother's love for competition that James attributes to his entrepreneurial spirit. [09:27] The journey of James' university years and in retrospect how being in a fraternity set the foundation for his business acumen. [11:38] How his gap year provided James the space to discover new talents that intersected with something he loved. [12:47] James explains part of what fires him up and drives him to keep exploring real estate both as a realtor and investor. [14:17] Lets dig a little deeper. James' passion for the business of real estate is truly lit by the collaboration process with his clients, team and partners. [17:07] James shares his business vision and the dynamics of his team environment. [19:31] 'Live well'. James' business philosophy and the master mind group he is part of.. [20:36] James' Sunday night routine: checking in on the week past, the week going forward, keeping himself accountable and eliminating unnecessary things in his life. [22:42] Intuition vs. education. How much of James' time is spent reading and learning through external resources? And how do his learnings impact his life? [26:27] Critical reflection of why he and his team do what they do breathes life into his business rather than stagnating in “because that's how we've always done it”. [28:23] What is one of James' biggest accomplishments? [29:04] James test drives the life of a “ski-bum” in Whistler BC for five months while keeping his business active in Edmonton. The wins and the limitations of the systems he put into place. [32:10] His sabbatical helped James recognize that achieving the compelling action he envisions for his business, is rooted in the team he recruits and their alignment with growing the business alongside him. [33:25] What inspired James to join REIN and turbo charge his business of real estate investing? [35:30] Being young and impulsive at 22, James sets out on a 30 by 30 plan to acquire 30 properties by 30 years of age which he achieved but didn't necessarily result in a healthy portfolio. It did however provide him insight that more may not be better. [38:12] Driven by “live well” rather than solely ...
