Today, we're doing things a little different here on Gratitudeology... we've done an "episode swap" with our pals over at the Campside Media crew and will be bringing you an episode of the show they produce in partnership with Sony, called Infamous. I'm personally a huge fan of the show, and this particular episode is a fun one that may just reframe the way you think about high school...You probably know Tina Fey's iconic camp masterpiece, Mean Girls—but do you know the real-life story behind the screenplay? In this episode, Vanessa and Natalie talk to Zoe Nightingale, the original Regina George, about high school. They also talk to Zoe's sister, Rosalind Wiseman, a sociologist who wrote Queen Bees and Wannabees, the deeply-researched sociological tome that inspired the movie.Follow Infamous on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/infamous/id1652941051Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
It is not productive to think negatively of our children's teenage years. Instead we need to find ways to embrace this time period and support the changes they're experiencing while giving them room to grow, learn, and fail with us. But it seems like all the literature out there is designed to scare and dishearten parents as their children reach these later years. What should we be reading? Thankfully, Ellen Galinsky decided it was time to share the positive side of parenting teenagers. Ellen is President of Families and Work Institute, elected President of the Work and Family Researchers Network (WFRN), and senior research advisor to AASA, the School Superintendent Organization. Previous jobs include Chief Science Officer at the Bezos Family Foundation and faculty at Bank Street College. Her life's work revolves around identifying important societal questions, conducting research to seek answers, and turning the findings into action. Her research is focused on work-life, children's development, youth voice, child-care, parent-professional relationship, and parental development. She's the author of the best-selling Mind in the Making and The Breakthrough Years. She's also authored 90 books/reports and 360 articles. Career highlights include serving as President of NAEYC, a fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources, a parent expert on the Mister Rogers Talks with Parents TV series, receiving a Distinguished Achievement Award from Vassar College and the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award from WFRN. Listen as Ellen shares more about the research she's done and how we as parents can lean into the teenage years in such a way that provides our children with opportunities to practice autonomy and self-determination. In this episode, we discuss: What teens want most from us as parents. Ways to give teens autonomy support. What shared solutions are and how we can use them to help our teens build their executive function. The five basic needs teenagers have. My brilliant, beautiful daughter Avery is turning 22. I'm so proud of the woman she's become, and the relationship we've built. I'm celebrating her by opening up about all the ways I screwed up raising her. Avery grew up as the younger sibling of a strong-willed older brother, so she experienced it all. But we've proven that being human and making mistakes doesn't have to drive a wedge between mother and daughter. In this episode, you'll learn: How honesty and humility about your mistakes can help you build a close, resilient relationship with your kids, from childhood through adulthood. That it's possible to break cycles of trauma and mistreatment even if you're not a perfect parent. How the relationships you had - or wanted to have - with your parents inform the relationships you have with your kids. And much more! As always, thanks for listening.
I have begun a long desired journey to provide a book club to the parents of our students who struggle to navigate the complication and challenges of the adolescent journey. We have chosen to read with our parents(of our students) two books. These books are by Rosalind Wiseman. Queen Bees and Wannabees was the basis for the movie Mean Girls and the companion book for navigating the male world is called Masterminds and Wingmen. Both are incredibly insightful for parents but have an even more incredible implications for educators world of all grade levels. We will briefly discuss a few take ways and will often acknowledge that the real lessons is in the book. Read along or just listen for some gems.
In a VERY short podcast this week, GC shows his contrition for forgetting to set an alarm and Matt flounces off to work in a huff after a very poor showing at Brentford. Bring on Burnley.
Rosalind Wiseman joins the Utterly Moderate Podcast to discuss her work promoting dignity and civility among young Americans. Wiseman is the author of a number of books, including Defending Ourselves, Queen Bees & Wannabees, and Masterminds & Wingmen. The movie Mean Girls, which starred Lindsay Lohan and Rachal McAdams, was actually based on Queen Bees & Wannabees. Wiseman is the co-founder and chief content officer of the organization Cultures of Dignity, which works with communities across the country to promote young people's physical and emotional wellbeing. On this episode we discuss the importance of social and emotional learning, promoting a culture of dignity and civility, the pitfalls of too much tech and social media, the impact of the pandemic on young people, Wiseman's forthcoming book (Courageous Discomfort) dealing with how to have constructive conversations about difficult topics like racism, and more. As a bonus, we also discuss an extremely embarrassing story from Ali's past! Whether or not you’ve read one of her New York Times bestselling books, you’re probably familiar with Rosalind Wiseman’s work – you just might not know it. That’s because Rosalind is the author of Queen Bees and Wannabees, the book upon which Mean Girls is based. It’s hard to believe, but the book is now 20 years old, and as relevant as ever. For many of us who watched Mean Girls as teenagers, we’re now preparing to parent adolescents ourselves. In today’s podcast episode, Georgie spoke to Rosalind about what it means to parents teenagers in today’s world, how the issues they face have changed (and how they haven’t!) and how we can support them through this rocky period of their lives. In this episode, we discuss Henrik Ibsen's Victorian masterpiece, Hedda Gabler. We approach the text from two different angles, first considering Hedda's narcissistic tendencies, and then by looking at her as a potential victim of her society. By comparing Hedda with Mother Gothel from Tangled, we get one perspective on this complex character, and by drawing parallels between Hedda and Regina George, we see that "mean girls" are often products of their upbringing. We utilize the Norton Anthology of World Literature, 3rd Edition, volume E. Additional Resources include: "Narcissistic Personality Disorder in the Movie Tangled: Mother Does Not Know Best" by Veronica Jaski Queen Bees and Wannabees by Rosalind Wiseman Music: Fugue in C# Major, from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1": J.S. Teaching self-defense to young women in her late twenties, Rosalind Wiseman saw a world she never expected; one where girls and young women would destroy each other. Not physically, but emotionally and socially. And, it wasn't okay with her. So, she stepped in, started to listen - really listen - not to adults, but to the young women, then all kids, and began to build coalitions in an effort to create better ways to be with each other. That eventually led her to write Queen Bees and Wannabees, a book that stormed onto the scene, rattled people to their core and started not just a conversation, but a global movement.Wiseman has since devoted herself to helping communities shift the way we think about children and teens' emotional and physical wellbeing. Through her teaching, speaking, curricula which is now taught in schools around the world, and media appearances on relational aggression, ethical leadership, the use of social media, and media literacy, she works with educators, parents, children, and teens to help them navigate the power dynamics that influence their lives and relationships. Seeking to scale the impact of her work to more people, she recently launched Cultures of Dignity, an organization that helps adults in positions of power support the children around them. But the journey has not been easy. And, we cover the highs, lows and in-betweens in today's conversation.Check out our offerings & partners: Sleep Number: During the Ultimate Sleep Number Event, save an incredible 50% on the Sleep Number 360® Limited Edition smart bed. The 365 Days of Astronomy, the daily podcast of the International Year of Astronomy 2009
Dr. Al Grauer hosts. Dr. Albert D. Grauer ( @Nmcanopus ) is an observational asteroid hunting astronomer. Dr. Grauer retired from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 2006. travelersinthenight.org Today's 2 topics: - During the same 6-night observing session as last week, Dr. Grauer determined that 14 of the 29 objects had "help" getting into weird orbits. - The same asteroid as we talked about last week crossed the Earth's orbit on February 10, 2014, at which time it was traveling at 38 miles per second relative relative to our planet. No one on Earth saw it streak by even though it was bright enough for us to detect. We've added a new way to donate to 365 Days of Astronomy to support editing, hosting, and production costs. During a recent 6 night observing run with the NASA funded Catalina Sky Survey 60 inch telescope on Mt. Lemmon, I found 29 Earth Approaching Asteroid candidates. With further observations, sixteen of these turned out to be real asteroids which in fact do not make close approaches to Earth. They range in size from about 5 football fields to nearly a mile in diameter

The Homo & A Housewife (JaкoБ Musıcк & Double-DD Author CK Brooke) have reunited for VOR's first programme of the new year! We salute 2019 with our live-review of Christian film studio Pure Fiicks's "God's Not Dead: A Light In The Darkness". The film stars Whitney Houston's mother, Tatum O'Neil, Tom Corbett, the owner of Pure Flix, Wannabee Marissa Tomei, Wannabee Kurt Cobain, Wannabee Ben Affleck, and some other wannabees. The film is a fever-dream of the Evangelical Christian paranoiac persecution complex. We justly trash it, while joking inappropriately over it the whole time! Don't watch the movie alone, listen to it with us! Both of the hosts fell sick after watching the film. 'GND III' is about the owner of Pure Flix, who stars in his own films, as the pastor of a church that is destroyed by a white teenager when he throws a brick through the church window, causing the church to explode, killing the African co-pastor, and the aftermath of this 'accidental terrorist attack' against the inoffensive Protestants Title: God's Not Dead: A Light In The Darkness Starring: Tatum O'Neil, Cissy Houston, Owner of Studio, Wannabees... Year: 2018 Genre: Stalinist Studio: Pure Flix From Wikipedia: "Unlike the first two films, A Light in Darkness was a box office bomb, making less in its entire theatrical run ($7.3 million) than the others grossed in their respective domestic opening weekends ($9.7 million and $7.6 million)...In the United States and Canada, God's Not Dead: A Light in Darkness was released on March 30, 2018, alongside Acrimony and Ready Player One, and was projected to gross $4–6 million from 1,685 theaters in its opening weekend. It ended up debuting to just $2.6 million, finishing 12th at the box office and marking the lowest opening of the series. Deadline Hollywood noted the film suffered from being the third film of a trilogy and also said religious audiences saw the film as "a cash grab and not a movie promoting a Christian message anymore"...The A.V. Club included the film on its list of the worst of the year" Sample some of CK Brooke's latest series of Youtube author interviews! : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gM_714mpt84 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tQUl_2JWlC0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbRdqbXysL0
