"The other Morrocan" in skydiving, Youssef Elmajdoub kicked off his skydiving career thinking he was simply going to the dropzone as moral support for a friend. Little did he know, a tandem skydive in Dubai had been purchased for him as well. That as they say wasn't exactly all it took though. Youssef continued in the sport not because he had an incredible passion for his newly discovered sport, but because he didn't think he handled it well enough the first time around. That mentality was a major driving force not only in his skydiving career, but in life in general. How can I be even better the next time around. Not always the easiest mindset to have, especially in a sport where a mistake can cost a lot more than just a little pride, as he would discover. Now, having recovered from an accident that could have easily taken his life, Youssef still approaches the sport with the same 'do better' mentality but now tempered with the realization that perfection isn't the goal. A Lunatic through and through, Youssef Elmajdoub embodies what skydiving is all about.

What role have artists played in dismantling colonial infrastructures? In what ways have they contributed to creating new platforms in the postcolonial era? What can we learn about forging solidarities through art from past generations? In this episode, Hoor Al Qasimi speaks with Morad Montazami, who co-curated The Casablanca Art School: Platforms and Patterns for a Postcolonial Avant-Garde (1962–1987) with Madeleine de Colnet, about the artistic revolution that followed Morrocan independence in 1956. They discuss the transformation of Casablanca Art School and the efforts towards cultural decolonisation led by Farid Belkahia, Mohammed Chabâa, Bert Flint, Toni (Antonella) Maraini and Mohamed Melehi. Tune in to hear about the story of the Moroccan ‘new wave' that triggered a new social movement and contributed to artistic solidarities between Latin America, West Asia and Africa.      CREDITS  Host: Hoor Al Qasimi  Guest: Morad Montazami  Editorial and Content Producers: Jyoti Dhar, Kamayani Sharma, Mahshid Rafiei  Sound Producer and Editor: Basil Kisswani  Music and Sound: Luc Allieres, Café da Mañha, 2021 Special Thanks: Nawar Al Qassimi. Episode Notes Travel executives from some of the industry's most important companies will be speaking at the 10th annual Skift Global Forum this week in New York City and they'll address a wide range of topics.  When it comes to the future of travel, Skift CEO and founder Rafat Ali has outlined four major themes that will impact travel the most: demographic shifts, the widespread loneliness crisis, the evolving future of work and the urgent need for climate adaptation.  All pose significant challenges – but also opportunities. As the world's population ages rapidly, the travel industry can craft experiences for an older yet increasingly active population. To address loneliness, it can create group travels centered around shared interests and themes. Next, Hospitality group Ennismore has taken major steps to market its all-inclusive resorts in its push for 100 resorts by 2027, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill. The company's all-inclusive resort collection currently has 38 properties, and Ennismore co-CEO Gaurav Bhushan expressed confidence his company could stand out in a segment that O'Neill notes is typically dominated by generic offerings.  Finally, tourism-dependent destinations such as Morocco and Maui have been decimated by natural disasters recently. Associate Editor Rashaad Jorden turns to Ask Skift, our artificial intelligence chatbot, to find out how events like earthquakes and wildfires impact tourism. As the aftermath of natural disasters often includes massive trip cancellations, Jorden writes Maui might see a decrease in visitors for the foreseeable future. Analysts at T.D have predicted that Maui's rebound would “take years,” citing the two-year recovery for air travel demand to Puerto Rico after Hurricane Irma in 2017.  Meanwhile, one Morrocan-based expert said the tourism to Marrakech, near the recent earthquake's epicenter, would suffer for years, adding relying on the industry to revive would be illogical. However, Moroccan hotel managers have said business is gradually returning, especially with the upcoming World Bank Group annual meeting in Marrakech.

Diary of a Serial Hostess Podcast (private feed for victoriadelamaza@icloud.com)

Some days I feel like I have lost my culinary touch, and none of the things I have planned for work out correctly. Twenty minutes before dinner, the soup develops lumps, the arugula wilts just by looking at it, the roast chicken comes out totally undercooked, and the floating islands, well, they are not floating at all. I never know if these mishaps are because of a particular phase of the moon or a sure wind from the South or that the earth is slightly out of orbit. I definitely don't think that the world is against me, that this is divine punishment from some unknown sin, or that the forces of the universe are colliding; I think it is just one of those days. It is, however, worrisome when it begins to happen more often than not. My latest mishap explains it all. I have probably made spaghetti carbonara, oh, about 1000 times, and can probably make it with my eyes closed. It is my go-to dish when all else fails, a total crowd pleaser and, with only four ingredients, a dish I can make spur of the moment. Well, I can tell you that the last two times I have made it…. I am actually embarrassed to say…. it was un-edible. I have lost my touch. And so, for this autumnal dinner, I am not trusting the muses to spread their magic, and I am relying on store-bought products to create a menu that all it needs is a bit of fluff. After all, turning regular take-out food into dinner party status is all about presentation and a little flare. And that, I am happy to say, is still with me! For all those of you in the same boat as I am, here are some tips to aid transformation:* Set the table and light candles. For very, very casual, you can use pretty paper napkins, but it is always best to bring out those colorful cotton ones. * Always transfer the food to ceramic or wooden bowls and platters. * Always heat (or chill) the food before serving.* If there is one recipe to learn, it is a great salad dressing. Whether it is Chinese take-out or a sushi extravaganza, or even tacos from the closest taqueria, setting the table, lighting candles, and playing a little music sets the tone and sends a clear message that yes, cooking may not be your thing, but you are still making an effort when friends come over. “No Labels on Tables” certainly applies here. Use ceramic dishes, platters, and bowls to serve, and proper cutlery and glasses. Add a fresh salad, sliced tomatoes, and fresh bread. Have a few extra sauces to fit the menu… for example, if Chinese, have really good quality soy and hoisin sauce. If you are serving Mexican, get some spicy ones, and if Morrocan fare is on your table, serve extra harissa and preserved lemons. I always have a jar of mango chutney, spicy pepper jelly, and tomato jam for those occasions when a little help is needed. Serve the food hot (or cold) and zap it in the microwave or heat it in the oven just before serving. Yes, it is takeout, but it doesn't have to be un-edible. After all the non-effort with the actual food, make an effort with drinks and serve a great wine or even a splurge of a couple of bottles of good champagne. How decadent and exotic to have Chinese takeout with Veuve Clicquot! And how about those tacos with a great Margaux. Memorable. I am hoping that my culinary touch comes back soon. I have a long list of recipes I want to try and a few dinner parties already scheduled… hoping the muses are not away for too long….. The Cinematography Podcast Sundance 2022 Special: Sirens Sirens is an intimate coming of age documentary focused on Lilas Mayassi and Shery Bechara, guitarists and co-founders of Slave to Sirens, the Middle East's first all-female thrash metal band. The documentary follows the band as they rehearse and play concerts, rebelling against the country's criticisms and stereotypes about women and heavy metal music. The relationships between bandmates is complicated, but they find an outlet in their music amid violent protests, fires and bombings in Beirut, Lebanon. Documentarian Rita Baghdadi had set out to find a story based in the Middle East or North Africa because her family background is Morrocan. In 2018 she found Slave to Sirens' EP online, saw photos of the band, and felt drawn to tell a story about the five women. The band was looking for press opportunities, and they welcomed Rita and her camera. None of them, including Rita, were sure Sirens would become a feature length documentary. Rita made several trips to Beirut from the U.S. to shoot and direct the documentary on her own, with just one camera, over a period of three years. She enjoys making intimate verite films, and unobtrusively focuses on the emotions in each scene. Rita was able to spend enough time with the band to weave a compelling documentary about independent women in the agony and ecstasy of their 20's, creating their own world to escape the chaos of their reality. Sirens premiered at the Sundance 2022 Film Festival and is seeking sales and distribution. Synopsis If you've ever attended a live symphony concert, you're familiar with the routine: before anyone starts playing, before the conductor even steps on stage, the principal oboist sounds an “A” – and the other musicians tune their instruments to that pitch. On today's date in 1975, a few people in the audience at Carnegie Hall might have been surprised to hear this familiar ritual segue directly into the opening of John Corigliano's new Oboe Concerto, which was receiving its premiere performance by oboist Burt Lucarelli and the American Symphony orchestra. The first movement of Corigliano's Concerto is entitled “Tuning Game,” followed by a “Song-Scherzo,” “Aria” and a final “Dance.” This form, says Corigliano, arose “from the different aspects of the oboe … The coloratura qualities of the oboe are emphasized in the ‘Aria' movement, for example, but the whole Concerto is highly theatrical, virtuoso music for both soloist and orchestra.” Theatrical is right! The final dance movement was inspired by the sound of the “rhaita” or Morrocan oboe. According to Corigliano: “I was fascinated by the rhaita's sound, heady and forceful... but having an infectiously exciting quality Music Played in Today's Program John Corigliano (b. 1938) — Oboe Concerto (Humbert Lucarelli, oboe; American Symphony; Kazuyoshi Akiyama, cond.) How do we understand these narrations?   Question 3 (19:26): Can a non-Muslim be a descendant of the Prophetic household? There were reports in a Morrocan newspaper that the Queen of England is from this lineage.   Question 4 (21:37): Is following a Madhab a point of Aqida? If somebody denies the necessity of following a Madhab (for other than a mujtahid mutlaq) does this cause such a person to fall outside of the parameters of Ahlusunna?   Question 5 (39:11): Does reciting salawat in a language other than Arabic (English, Urdu etc) count and earn reward for the reciter? And how about if salawat is recited in the mind but not the tongue?   Question 6 (43:53): How do we understand some Awliya of the past narrating fabricated Hadiths in their books?   Question 7 (49:35): Is the Burda Shareef which was given to Sayiduna Ka'b bin Zuhayr still around in the world today? Question 8 (52:30): Who is the Mujaddid of this century? Is this year or next year the beginning of a new century? Question 9 (55:34): You had mentioned that even if one goes to a trained professional they will give herbs etc first and then as a last resort, perform hijama. Can you please explain if the person is going just for hijama because of maintenance only then why can’t he/she directly get hijama all the time? Question 10 (58:20): Is it necessary to follow a madhabb, and if so, what would be the opinions on those who call themselves "Ahl al-Hadith" and of the Dhahiri madhabb?

We must all begin somewhere. Everyone's path is different. But we all start at the beginning. A couple of years ago, I had an urge to get a DNA test. I was always told that my grandmother was part African American and Part Mexican and was shocked when my DNA test returned nothing of Mexican origin. However, I did learn that I had a large portion of Morrocan in me, along with 2% - 4% British & Irish ancestry. My friends all joked and laughed saying, "Well that makes sense!". But mainly I wish to be able to get feminine hygiene products out to young girls and women all over. So once again visit patreon.com/perkyperspectives and also visit ICN.DJ for more podcast under Indie Creative Network.Social Media IG: Perkysexycool Twitter: Toni_tonytone Email: perkyperspectivespod@gmail.com websites: perksofwellness.org patreon.com/perkyperspectivesMARCH 24 Los Angeles event: https://badassbootcamp.eventbrite.com/?aff=perkyIG: Halamaroc Twitter:Halamaroc_ Email: Booklilbae@gmail.com and Badassbootcamp@gmail.com website: ontheblock.tv Events:badassbootcamp.eventbrite.comIntroduce Guest: I would like to Introduce my guest for today’s episode. A short history of prince Ayuba Diallo from Bundu, Senegal. Ayuba Diallo was a aristocratic scholar who fell victim to the Atlantic slave trade . Ayuba diallo started to gain attention from his masters by his impressive skills writing arabic. They also thought he was too sophisticated to be a normal slave. Ayuba Diallo wrote first hand accounts and slavery, some of the first to ever become written . Ayuba diallo wrote a letter in arabic to then Secretary of State (john adams). John adams had the document translated to english from Morrocan diplomats. He was later freed from bondage ! I love this story because of the sense empowerment it gives me.

Episode 4 is here! I got an amazing chance to sit down with the fantastic comedian from Washington, D.C., Curt Mariah. Check Curt out here https://www.facebook.com/CurtMariah! We recorded on the porch of a house in Columbia Heights, D.C. so there's a good deal of background noise (sirens, buses, and cars) but I think it adds to the conversation! You decide! Curt and I discussed a range of topics, but mostly we talked about our issues with Christianity, cooking, race and antitheism, and a fantastic story about a soul-shaking experience in a Morrocan desert! Enjoy!
