To discuss further Anita Rani was joined by Fawzia Koofi, former deputy speaker of the Afghan Parliament & peace negotiator, and BBC senior Afghan reporter Mahjooba Nowrouzi, recently returned from Afghanistan.As rugby fans across the UK look forward to the Women's Rugby World Cup, Anita speaks with rugby trailblazer Deborah Griffin. An amateur player since university, Deborah co-organised the first ever Women's Rugby World Cup, held in Wales in 1991. US-born Protestant evangelicalism has gone global to an extent of which many of us might be unaware. Soul by Soul: The Evangelical Mission to Spread the Gospel to Muslims (Columbia Global Reports, 2024) tells the story of Americans' colossal mobilization to proclaim Christianity “to the ends of the Earth,” a movement that triumphed in the Global South, challenged the Vatican, then turned east in full force after 9/11 to spread the Gospel among Muslims. When the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq set off a wave of anti-American attacks and made the field too dangerous for US missionaries, thousands of disciples, particularly from Latin America, were mobilized to finish the task. In Soul by Soul, journalist Adriana Carranca follows the pilgrimage of a missionary family from Brazil as they move to Afghanistan. (13:24) • My determination was a lot higher than probably 80-85% of the recruits. (16:00) • As a Royal Marine, it was a reality check. All of the sudden, the movies and all that goes out the window, and reality kicks in. (17:11) • Where the Hilos landed, there was no cover, and they left us there. It was as flat as a pool table. We couldn't go back; we couldn't go left or right; so the only thing we could do was a full frontal assault on this compound.  [We] Just showed the enemy what we're made of. (32:51) • [As we broke through a door] They just opened fire on the first team that went through the entryway, and I happened to take a round through the neck that hit me square in the spinal cord, and that was me – lights out. (44:55) • The next thing I remember was waking up probably about 3 months later. (46:46) • [My recovery was] hell on earth, man. (46:57) • You're fighting for your survival, fighting for your life, using everything you're got, just to not give in. (47:24) • They couldn't do an MRI because of the metal that was still stuck in my neck. (49:16) • I spent 12 months on my back, staring at the roof. (56:32)  • I'm not be the man to let the team down let the legacy of who we are down. I'm not gonna be that soldier. Army veteran Scotty Hasting survived being shot ten times in Afghanistan. He recalls the ambush that started it all, the recovery process, the survivor's guilt that haunts him, and the different means of therapy he's used to heal. Hamish deployed twice to East Timor as an infantry soldier. During this deployment in Timor he encountered the NZ SAS which led to him attempting and completing SAS selection and training cycle and was badged in 2003. In 2004 he deployed to Afghanistan and during this rotation he was there on the day and witnessed when Willie Apiata VC displayed acts of gallantry which led to be long awarded the Victoria Cross.After a joint training exercise with the Australian SASR Hamish decided in 2008  transferred across to the Australian SASR and deploying on multiple Afghanistan combat rotations fighting the insurgency. During one rotation he was part of the famous battles in Gizab and Tizak both very successful SASR operations.
