Jenny Pulse is a visual artist, singer, songwriter and one half of the collaborative duo, Tim Kinsella and Jenny Pulse. They're newest release, Giddy Skelter (out now via Kill Rock Stars), is a multi-textured collage of live instrumentation, samples, electro beats and experimental hooks. The recording is accompanied by a beautifully written zine titled Giddy Skelter : A Case Study. How to Make The Album You're Trying To Make, which functions as an illustration and manual to the process of making the record. In this episode Jenny shares how a karaoke rig and an old synthesizer were the gateway to her learning composition and arrangement. She tells us how the accompanying zine is a document of a new process of making a recording, how trips to the art institute influenced their song evolution and why she prefers mixing in a studio. The two discuss why untethering from the computer is a cure for the CPU blues, why band names make you feel like a teenager, and we hear a couple tunes. He says that if you don't have courage as a leader then you're in the wrong profession as you are susceptible to all the external fears that are pressing in on you. Tim states that the following are the most important things experienced leaders need to be thinking about and doing today to be effective leaders: Be Self-Aware Learn Your Triggers and Stress Points Understand Your Barriers to Empathy Lead Through The Prism of Love Take Care of Your Mental Health Finishing off the episode, Tim provides us with some information about his Leadership Program commencing August 2023 so make sure you keep your eyes and ears peeled for that amazing experience!

Tim Kinsella has an Irish accent, which is unique for someone who spent three decades in the US Navy. Tim is an interesting dude because he is not your atypical Joe-Navy type of person. Not the caricature you see on an old John Wayne movie or a more modern Jerry Bruckheimer action film. He's got depth and breadth, appreciates the arts, and has a knack for tongue-in-cheek humor. We talk about all kinds of stuff: mindset, the importance of hobbies, being careful on what we let define us as people, his Irish heritage, self-education, humor, mental health, and leadership. He was in command when the tragic shooting happened onboard Naval Air Station Pensacola in December 2019, and he shares personal insight in this interview that he has never shared elsewhere. He is now the Director of the Center for Leadership at the University of West Florida College of Business in Pensacola, Florida. On the heels of covering each other’s music as part of Joyful Noise Recordings’ very cool Cause & Effect series, Devendra Banhart and Tim Kinsella (Joan Of Arc) sat down to record a Talkhouse Podcast episode about the project. They touch on it for a moment and then, as one might expect from such restless and prolific artists, veer away, never to return. Their talk instead covers their upcoming books, the poems that came out of Devendra’s “ashram-hopping in India,” and the nuts and bolts of what goes into staying sane as highly productive working artists. Oh, and we also hear their argument for a hallucinatory experience as a prerequisite to lead the United States of America … Check it out, and subscribe now to stay in the loop on future episodes of the Talkhouse Podcast. — Elia Einhorn, Talkhouse Podcast host and producer Today’s episode was recorded by Tim and Devendra, and co-produced by Mark Yoshizumi.

“We never make a decision because we want to alienate the audience,” Tim Kinsella explains. “But we also never make a decision according to what we think the audience wants.” That sums up the musician’s career as any review. Though it only accounts for a bit of the outright animosity found in pieces like Pitchfork’s take on Joan of Arc’s latest opus, He's Got the Whole This Land Is Your Land in His Hands, referred to by the site as a “troll manifesto.” But the way Kinsella tells it, he’s just doing his thing. Joan of Arc, and with the prolific Chicago musician’s numerous other outlets like Cap'n Jazz, The Owls and Make Believe — which found him playing a wrestling heel — have never shied away from experimenting as a method for shaking up the doldrums of music writing. This latest record is the result of hours of jamming, a loose confederation of friends playing freely and exchanging instruments — having fun making music. The result is challenging, confusing and sometimes sublime, as in the case of Kinsella’s stream of conscious, which seem to invoke Trump’s tiny-handed insecurities well before the subject became national news.

On today's episode I talk to musician Tim Kinsella. Originally from Chicago, Tim has been part of some of the best indie rock bands of the last quarter-century. In 1989, he formed Cap'n Jazz along with his brother Mike, who would go on to become a frequent collaborator with Tim and a well-know artist in his own right in bands like American Football and Owen. Even though Cap'n Jazz only put out one album - and later an anthology on Jade Tree Records - they became a cult band and helped define a kind of post-hardcore art-rock. After Cap'n Jazz broke up, Tim formed the even-more-experimental band Joan of Arc, which has been his main project since 1995. Since their first album A Portable Model of..., they've put out over 30 albums and 7"es. Tim's also played in many other memorable bands including Owls, Friend/Enemy and Make Believe, and that's just naming a few. Joan of Arc's latest He's Got The Whole This Land Is Your Land In His Hands was just released by Joyful Noise. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
