Artist Sam Grinberg started interning with The Simpsons in 2014. It turned into an actual job shortly after--a dream job! He joins us today to discuss the popular show, its possible ska connections and his own history with the genre. He's got a lot of history with ska. Sam grew up in New Jersey and used to go see tons of bands like Streetlight Manifesto and local legends Awful Waffle. He even drops some super obscure local ska band names on us like Stolen Oregano, Explosive Sheep, and The Nerd Who Ate St. Louis. Sam has also done a lot of artwork for ska bands. A short list includes Catbite, Kill Lincoln, Less Than Jake, Save Ferris, The Holophonics, the Too Hectic comps on Pay Attention Records (By Phil Lucas-Smith of Ska Punk Daily) and more. (He even did art for the Hella Mega Tour, which featured Fall Out Boy). Plus Sam talks about his other artwork like the Scumburbia series and his infamous "How To Skank" comic. We also learn how Sam got a job at The Simpsons, how he defines his art style, and how many tattoos people have gotten of his artwork. He talks about seeing Fatter Than Albert, Bomb The Music Industry and going to many shows at The Starland Ballroom and the Stone Pony. Plus he talks about going to the "It's a Ska World After All" at Disneyland. And we learn that one of his art teachers was Gary Panter, who created the characters for Pee Wee's Playhouse. And we discuss ska bands with Simpsons references and the ultimate Simpsons-themed metal-core band: Okilly Dokilly. A jam-packed episode! Support the show

Fervent fans of The Doughboys know their whole history, detailed on the Rock N' Raw DVD – they first got together in ‘64 and played in various permutations through the rest of the 60's. They gigged incessantly, won a battle-of-the-bands on Zacherle's Disc-o-Teen TV show, were the house band at the legendary Café Wha? in New York City in the summer of '68. They opened for every act imaginable including The Beach Boys, and released two 45's, Rhoda Mendelbaum and Everybody Knows My Name, on Bell Records (which later became Arista Records) before splitting up for what they thought was for good. The band members went their separate and interesting ways – Myke Scavone fronted hard rock ensemble Ram Jam who scored an international hit with Black Betty; Richie Heyman played drums for the likes of Link Wray, Brian Wilson and Jonathan Richman while simultaneously pursuing an acclaimed career as a singer/songwriter (under his full moniker Richard X. Heyman); Mike Caruso landed session work with such notable pop producers as Bo Gentry and Kenny Laguna, and even jammed with Jimi Hendrix!Mike CarusoSince the band re-formed in 2000 at a surprise birthday party for drummer Richie Heyman's birthday, The Doughboys have released six albums (Is It Now?, Act Your Rage, Shakin' Our Souls, Hot Beat Stew, Front Street Rebels and Running For Covers), numerous singles, and a documentary film with accompanying live disc (Rock N' Raw). They've played up and down the eastern half of the country, often sharing bills with such luminaries as The Pretenders, The Yardbirds, The Electric Prunes, Roberta Flack, Robin Trower and many others. They performed at the historic “Who Shot Rock n' Roll?” exhibition at the Allentown Museum, at an all-star tribute to George Harrison at the New York Society for Ethical Culture, at the “Long May You Run” benefit at The Hamilton Live in Washington, DC, and have appeared at prestigious venues like B.B. King's, the Sellersville Theater, the Stone Pony and the Starland Ballroom. Lead singer Myke Scavone is now also a member of The Yardbirds, touring the world as they continue to spread the gospel of the golden era of Rock n' Roll.In 2005, Gar Francis (of Stones tribute band Sticky Fingers fame, as well as work with Billy Idol and Mark Lindsay of Paul Revere and The Raiders) entered the picture after the untimely passing of founding member and brilliant guitarist Willy Kirchofer. When Gar joined the band, The Doughboys branched out into recording their own original material, and it wasn't long before they entered the recording studio and laid down tracks for Is It Now?, the first album of their long and storied career. The Doughboys' songs have become huge favorites on radio around the world, especially with Little Steven Van Zandt, who named Shakin' Our Souls his favorite album of 2012, and who has bestowed the much sought after rank of “Coolest Song In The World” on eight of The Doughboys' songs on his Underground Garage channel on Sirius/XM radio. Additionally, Doughboys music is used extensively in film, television and advertising, including in such TV shows as “The Big Bang Theory”, “Californication,” “Breaking Amish” and “The Good Guys” and in the film “Coming Through The Rye.”

Was it the best show of May 1977? Did it really happen, or was it part of a CIA mind control program? A widely circulated conspiracy theory, which you can read about here, says it never happened. Awesome show, whether it happened or not. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

The band is comprised of Jenna Bruno (Vocals), Matthew Thompson (Guitar), Ferdinand Benauro (Guitar), Justin Rodman (Drums), and Lance Nelson (Bass). We spoke to Jenna during her free time through this quarantine; it was a pleasure speaking with her and we cannot wait to see what the band accomplishes next! Interviewer: Jeanine Woody

Jeff Crespi started taking his son to shows when he was 8 years old as a father son bonding experience. The two very quickly became embraced by the music scene's local supporters of live music. They were were quickly attending over 100 local and mainstream shows a year. Jeff began taking pics to document the experiences - so many photos in fact that he often had to send in his pocket digital camera for replacement! This continued for years until Jeff gradually started providing professional photo coverage for numerous magazines and outlets. Since then he's been published internationally, nationally, and locally many times. Today, Jeff is the official house photographer for the legendary Stone Pony and Wonder Bar in Asbury Park, NJ, and a house photographer for Starland Ballroom and other venues around town. “I felt like I couldn't tell a full story in four songs-I wanted the album to have a narrative arch, a whole, fully story that you have to listen to at once.” Proper. is a POC, queer Brooklyn based band who is ushering in a conversation into the emo/pop-punk scene about growing up in white suburbia and being into the music that they are. Their most recent album,* I Spent The Winter Writing Songs About Getting Better* recieved great review from The Alternative and even Pitchfork (a 7.4 rating!) and is totally inspired by The Wonder Years. Erik Garlington, the lead singer of Proper., says he recieved Dan "Soupy" Campbell's blessing about using the title for the album. They are playing a SOLD OUT holiday show with Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties and Jade from Oso Oso at the Starland Ballroom on Dec. 14! What we're saying is: check this band out so you can say you listened to them before they blew up. Since Brian was working AND sick, we invited former guest, Ariel Atkins from BLMChicago to help guest host. Proper. is currently on their first U.S. Tour!
