For the 25th anniversary of American Football (Self-Titled), we take a detailed look at how it was made. The origins of American Football began with Mike Kinsella's band Cap'n Jazz, who were hugely influential in the punk scene in the Chicago suburbs. Steve Holmes went to high school with Kinsella and was inspired to learn guitar after watching Cap'n Jazz perform. Kinsella and Holmes became close friends and ended up going to college together and were roommates at the University of Illinois in Champaign. During college, Kinsella briefly joined a band with Steve Lamos called The One Up Downstairs. When that band broke up, Holmes and Lamos began jamming together and when Kinsella heard their practice tapes, he asked if he could join. The three of them ended up forming American Football in 1997. Their friends, Matt Lunsford and Darcie Knight were just getting their label Polyvinyl going in nearby Danville and they offered to release a three song EP in 1998. By the time they were graduating, they had enough songs for a full-length album, but the band was breaking up as Holmes and Kinsella were moving back to Chicago. Polyvinyl offered to release an album anyway so they booked time at Private Studios with local engineer, Brendan Gamble. The American Football (Self-Titled) album was eventually released in 1999. In this episode, Steve Holmes describes the guitar style he developed with Kinsella that was based on alternate tunings and shifting time signatures, inspired by music they were listening to at the time like Steve Reich, Nick Drake, The Sea and Cake and Red House Painters. Mike Kinsella talks about switching from drums to guitar and writing lyrics inspired by the few romantic relationships he had up to that point. His lyrics came from a diary and were heavily influenced by the melodramatic lyricism of bands like The Cure, Depeche Mode and The Sundays. Steve Lamos discusses his musical upbringing and deep love of jazz, which found its way into the American Football sound with his trumpet playing and compositional approach to the drums. The three of them describe the unique sound they found together and the unlikely story about how even though the band broke up early on, the album still managed to reach people years after it was a released. From recording the week after graduation to constantly having to borrow guitars, amps and tuners to embracing repetitive patterns and avoiding traditional verse chorus structures to singing through paper towel rolls during recording to lyrics about relationships ending and the transition into adulthood to the album cover of the now iconic American Football house, we'll hear the stories around how the record came together.
American Football is a legendary midwestern emo band. They're releasing a covers version of their record LP1 to celebrate its 25th anniversary. We spoke with Mike Kinsella about Will Ferrell at Equinox, a podcaster's negroni, a recap of the crazy emo fest they just played in Las Vegas, Taylor Swift and Gracie Abrams, Urbana, Illinois might be the only place in America where you can get any work done, the process of buying the house from their much-memed album cover, Cap'n Jazz, wearing shorts on stage, the number of times he goes to the grocery store per week, when a fan wants to make your music about them, his philosophy on hoops, tennis, and loving sports in general, what he'd like to do for the third act of his life, zen and the art of chopping vegetables, and his thoughts on Malort, and Fernet, respectively. twitter.com/donetodeath twitter.com/themjeans howlonggone.com instagram.com/americfootball twitter.com/mybandowen Learn more about your ad choices. The 15-year history of Rig Rundown has established that guitar gear fascination (and obsession) runs deep in our community. It's the life blood of our show. But if there was ever antithetical example to guitar gluttony and equipment idolatry, it would be American Football. Their original self-proclaimed “bedroom college project” focused on self-expression, musical creativity, and working with what you had, which wasn't much. For the recording of their pioneering American Football album released in 1999, they borrowed most of their gear, shared a single guitar cable and tuner, didn't use bass, and formulated odd open tunings that allowed for sinuously melodic cinematic passages between Kinsella and Holmes. Their exploration of unique open tunings inspire a legion of players include 6-string virtuoso Yvette Young. (She now ships all her signature Ibanez guitars in a tricky open tuning—F–A–C–G–B–E—derived from American Football.) Their ingenious and scrappy methods went on to inform the brand of Midwest emo that simmered a devoted fanbase waiting for their return after disbanding in 2000. First returning to the stage in 2014 and delivering two more American Football albums in 2016 and 2019, the band continues using minimal gear for maximum art.Ahead of American Football's headlining show at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl, cofounding members Mike Kinsella (vocals/guitar) and Steve Holmes (guitar) invited PG's Perry Bean onstage for a refreshingly practical gear chat. Kinsella recalls the band's basic beginnings and explains how he starts every American Football demo. Then, Holmes shows off his “gorgeous and favorite” Tele. Plus, we encounter a Rig Rundown first where the tech has veto power over setlists.Brought to you by D'Addario Trigger Capo.

This week, Features contributor Andy Vasoyan speaks with Mike and Nate Kinsella about their new art pop post-rock project, LIES. They discuss their debut self-titled album, temporarily naming songs-in-progress after Robyn and their favorite Robyn songs, how making music as LIES feels like a vacation, and getting excited about the same things musically. "I'd always wanted to do something that was just me and Mike. I think that we have very similar taste. We can sort of finish each other's sentences musically." - Nate Kinsella Produced by Andy Vasoyan Photo Credit: Alexa Viscius
Longtime collaborators (and cousins) Mike and Nate Kinsella have played together in Joan of Arc, the Cap'n Jazz reunion shows, and the current iteration of American Football; they've worked together on Mike's solo albums as Owen; and now they've got a collaborative album under the name LIES out March 31 via Polyvinyl Records. It finds them leaning into new wave-era influences like Depeche Mode, The Cure, Peter Gabriel, and more, and embracing synthesizers, electronic drums, and other aesthetic choices that fall outside of American Football's usual wheelhouse, without abandoning what's made Mike Kinsella such a distinct songwriter for the past 25 years. On this episode of the BrooklynVegan podcast, Mike and Nate discuss the new LIES album, realizing they were both into punk as kids at a family party, and discovering their chemistry on the 2003 Joan of Arc tour. They also discuss Steve Lamos leaving and rejoining American Football, that time Nate fell asleep at an Owen show, that time Mike threw himself a roast for his 40th birthday party, and much more. We've also got an exclusive dark blue vinyl variant of the LIES album, limited to just 250 copies. Episode 15: Incarceration, rehabilitation, and education. As a teenager, Mike Kinsella was rubbing shoulders with the likes of Jamie Carragher, and David Thompson, under the tutelage of Steve Heighway at Liverpools centre of excellence. After falling out of Liverpool, Mike ended up at Tranmere, via a short stint at Bury. Once more he was training with legends, John Aldridge, Ronnie Moore, Jonny Morrissey, under the watchful eye of the late John King. You may assume at this point that Mike went on to have a long and successful career as a footballer, but over the next ten to fifteen years of his life, Mike saw the inside of prison cells in three different countries, eventually leaving the prison system for good in 2012. Since that time, Mike has educated himself, tuned his life around, and is now using his experiences to guide the young boys and girls at the Tranmere development college. We take a look behind the scenes at what led Mike down a dark path, as well as hearing first hand, what his role entails at Tranmere Rovers.

As part of The 1975's takeover of The Face, we're releasing a series of podcasts featuring frontman Matty Healy in conversation with his musical heroes. It's hard to exaggerate the all-round cultural significance of Brian Eno. He's a producer, conceptual artist and theorist who pioneered the ambient genre and the idea of generative music. In a five-decade career, this one-time member of Roxy Music and lifelong experimentalist has collaborated with multiple artists including David Bowie, Talking Heads, Devo and U2, helping them all expand their musical horizons. He's also a famously nice bloke. And, it turns out, he's a big admirer of The 1975. In this podcast, Healy and Eno express their admiration for each other's work and dissect the concepts behind ambient music and abstract art, the exciting potential of gaming, the sly wit of Bowie, and the difficult task of making decent political music. Want to hear more of these? We also have podcasts featuring Matty talking to Stevie Nicks, Conor Oberst, Steve Reich, Mike Kinsella, Kim Gordon and Bobby Gillespie. As part of The 1975's takeover of The Face, we're releasing a series of podcasts featuring frontman Matty Healy in conversation with his musical heroes. Presenting the one and only Stevie Nicks. Yes, this is literally a podcast with Stevie Nicks. Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac. It goes without saying that Healy was honoured to speak to the singer, songwriter, poet, and all-round Fleetwood Mac frontwoman. The feeling, luckily, was mutual – it turns out that Nicks is a massive fan of The 1975. Nicks talks about the intense emotional (and chemical) cocktails that have fuelled much of Fleetwood Mac's material, her feeling of sisterhood with bandmate Christine McVie, and her spiritual connection with late friends and heroes Prince and Tom Petty. Healy and Nicks also discuss going sober, poetry and creative chemistry. It is, frankly, a love-in. Want to hear more of these? We also have podcasts featuring Matty talking to Bobby Gillespie, Conor Oberst, Steve Reich, Mike Kinsella, Kim Gordon and Brian Eno. As part of The 1975's takeover of The Face, we've released a series of podcasts featuring frontman Matty Healy in conversation with his musical heroes. Conor Oberst is the cult, much-loved singer-songwriter behind Bright Eyes, and also a prolific collaborator: see also Desaparecidos and Better Oblivion Community Centre (with Phoebe Bridgers). To legions of ardent fans, the Nebraskan sage is, simply, one of the best songwriters ever. In this podcast, Oberst and Healy discuss the roots of emo, the return of emo, ageing, influences and mortality. Read the full transcripts on TheFace.com. Want to hear more of these? As part of The 1975's takeover of The Face, we've released a series of podcasts featuring frontman Matty Healy in conversation with his musical heroes. Steve Reich is one of the most renowned composers in contemporary music. The 83-year-old American's endless curiosity had led to thrilling experiments and musical breakthroughs. In this podcast, Reich and Healy discuss being inspired by the sound of the city, the “amazing wizardry” of Aphex Twin and the innovations of Reich contemporaries and fellow-travellers Terry Riley and Philip Glass. Want to hear more of these? We also have podcasts featuring Matty talking to Brian Eno, Stevie Nicks, Mike Kinsella, Conor Oberst and Kim Gordon. You can read the full transcripts at TheFace.com. As part of The 1975's takeover of The Face, we've released a series of podcasts featuring frontman Matty Healy in conversation with his musical heroes. Bobby Gillespie is the frontman of Primal Scream and the former drummer with The Jesus and Mary Chain. After growing tired of being a straight-up indie band – and, frankly, with nothing left to lose – in 1989 the Scotsman enlisted the help of DJ/producer Andrew Weatherall. The result was the groundbreaking blend of psychedelia, dub, funk and acid house that is the Scream's classic 1991 album Screamadelica. In the years since, Gillespie's restless rock'n'roll spirit has continued to explore multiple genres – and, like Healy after him, he's pushed the boundaries of how a bunch of guys in a band can sound. In this podcast, Gillespie and Healy debate the current state of rock music, authenticity in music and art, and the legacy and legend of the mighty Weatherall. Want to hear more of these? We also have podcasts featuring Matty talking to Stevie Nicks, Conor Oberst, Steve Reich, Mike Kinsella, Kim Gordon and Brian Eno. As part of The 1975's takeover of The Face, we've released a series of podcasts featuring frontman Matty Healy in conversation with his musical heroes. Kim Gordon was a founding member of Sonic Youth, the New York band who tore apart the rules of how rock music should be played. Since their split in 2011, Gordon has performed as half of experimental guitar duos Body/Head and Glitterbust, written the bestselling book Girl in a Band and, last year, released her first solo album, No Home Record. She's also dedicated her time to art, film and political activism. In this podcast, Gordon discusses NYC's No Wave scene, her career in art, dealing with depression through writing, her passion for film and politics, and being “freaked out” by modern pop culture. Want to hear more of these? We also have podcasts featuring Healy talking to Stevie Nicks, Brian Eno, Steve Reich, Mike Kinsella, Conor Oberst and Bobby Gillespie. As part of The 1975's takeover of The Face, we've released a series of podcasts featuring frontman Matty Healy in conversation with his musical heroes. Mike Kinsella is a prolific, cult, cornerstone figure in emo. The Chicago native's bands include Cap'n Jazz, Joan of Arc, Owls and American Football – bands have inspired the more tender side of Healy's songwriting. The admiration goes both ways: Kinsella recently covered his favourite '75 song, Me. In this podcast, Kinsella and Healy discuss the pre-internet landscape of indie rock, the mutating definition of the term “emo”, and whether or not the American will make more music with his brother and bandmate Tim. Along the way, Kinsella shares a story about his mum baking a cake for Fugazi, while Healy hints at reprising Drive Like I Do, the heavier band that were the teenage precursor The 1975. Want to hear more of these? We also have podcasts featuring Healy talking to Stevie Nicks, Brian Eno, Steve Reich, Kim Gordon, Conor Oberst and Bobby Gillespie. All these feelings! What are Alan and Kyle to do with all the things they feel? When your teenage romance ends and the world is falling apart around you what is one to do? Run to the arms of their father, or father analogue (Mike Kinsella). Maybe not the Founding Father of emo, but the Abe Lincoln for sure. He's not a household name, but his music has shaped the sound and defined the content since the ancient times of the 1990's. Let's talk about American Football.

Welcome to Episode 81 of the Washed Up Emo Podcast. Next up on the American Football series is Nate Kinsella. Nate although wasn’t part of the original recording, he played bass for the reunion shows and was a big part of the new record. Previously, Nate and Mike Kinsella worked together on an Owen album. As you say, it’s in the family. Nate is also starting a family with his wife and we talk about what advice the other dads in American Football gave him, laundromat etiquette and if his baby is a boy or a girl. Audio wise, there was a helicopter circling me the entire recording so I did my best to cut that out. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
Welcome to Episode 80 of the Washed Up Emo Podcast. As far as bands go associated with emo, there isn’t one as revered as American Football. I’ve had the esteemed pleasure to have every member of the band on the podcast to talk about this new album and of course, the past. Next up is American Football’s Mike Kinsella. The band American Football formed in 1997, and released only one album and an EP before breaking up about three years later. Their critically acclaimed debut went on to achieve cult status as one of the most influential records of the '90s, and was reissued as a deluxe double-LP last year. In this episode, Mike Kinsella, Steve Holmes, and Steve Lamos of American Football break down the first song they wrote together, "The One with the Tambourine," from their self-titled EP. They talk about being influenced by the Chicago music scene of the '90s, and how they combined alternative tunings, unconventional time signatures, and naiveté to craft their sound. This episode is sponsored by Hover, Lynda.com, and Lagunitas Brewing Company.
American Football is on the show this week, so get ready to run, blitz and mostly punt yourself into a state of fun! Try not to fumble this one, we’re all counting on you. Recently, I got together with Mike Kinsella for the podcast who in these circles needs no introduction. Alas, for those unaware, he has been a part of some of the most revered bands in the scene from the last 90s through today. His work with Cap'n Jazz, American Football, Owls, Owen and Their / They're / There and Joan of Arc has influenced countless individuals and bands to pursue music. We talk about his upbringing, using maps while touring Europe, an upcoming American Football release, renaming "Never Meant" so it's funnier when someone yells it out at an Owen show and of course, the future. One thing is for sure, there is plenty of music left in Mr. Kinsella. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)
Josh Kaufman (who is also a member of Rocketship Park) came in several months earlier with Higgins, so we knew we were going to to like his solo stuff. When he came back, he brought a few friends that he was touring with: Mike Kinsella, who goes by Owen; Caithlin De Marrais; and Lara Meyerratken, […]
