Gap Year For Grown-Ups
Nicholas Christakis on How the Pandemic Will Affect Your Life Until 2024

When will the Covid 19 pandemic end? That’s the question on everyone’s mind. Today Debbie talks to one person who just might have an answer to that question. Nicholas Christakis is a nationally-recognized expert in three fields: medicine, sociology and public health. He’s a distinguished Sterling Professor at Yale, a researcher on the topics of social networks and human goodness, and a bestselling author, most recently, of Apollo’s Arrow: The Profound and Enduring Impact of Coronavirus on the Way We Live. He’s been named to TIME magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. His fluency in explaining the science, epidemiology, psychology, sociology and history of pandemics makes this a fascinating conversation. Plus he’s got a good sense of humor:You’ll hear why he chose to publish Apollo’s Arrow last fall, midway through the COVID 19 pandemic, before we knew the end of the storyHow his childhood experiences with illness and death affected his career choicesWhat the predictable three phases of a pandemic are (HINT: we're still in the immediate phase)Why he thinks this pandemic won’t be over until 2024They also talked about separating the biological vs. the psychological impacts of the pandemicWhat herd immunity actually means and whether we’ll get thereAnd what the public health messaging around the pandemic should beDebbie asks him point blank: when is the next pandemic? The answer is unnerving - sooner than you might think. But they end on a positive note: plagues historically bring loss, grief, confusion, and misinformation. But they also reveal cooperative and generous behavior, the best of humankind. About Nicholas ChristakisWikipediaTwitterYale UniversityTed TalksHuman Nature Lab at YalePhoto Credit: Evan Mann Books by Nicholas ChristakisApollo's Arrow: The Profound and Enduring Impact of Coronavirus on the Way We Live by Nicholas Christakis (Little, Brown Spark 2020)Blueprint: The Evolutionary Origins of a Good Society by Nicholas Christakis (Little, Brown Spark 2019)Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives by Nicholas Christakis (Little, Brown Spark 2009)Death Foretold: Prophecy and Prognosis in Medical Care by Nicholas Christakis (University of Chicago Press, 2001) Articles and interviewsA year of COVID: Making sense of an ‘alien and unnatural’ time (Yale News, March 4, 2021)Epidemiologist looks to the past to predict second post-pandemic 'roaring 20s' (The Guardian, December 21, 2020)Denial And Lies Are 'Almost An Intrinsic Part Of An Epidemic,' Doctor Says (NPR, October 29, 2020)The pandemic is as much about society, leaders, and values as it is about a pathogen (Science Mag, November 17, 2020)The New York Times Book Review: The Pandemic's Future — and Ours (NYT Book Review, November 3, 2020)The Importance of Being Little: What Young Children Really Need from Grownups by Erika Christakis (Penguin Books 2016)Remote Learning Isn't the Only Problem With School (The Atlantic, December 2020)The COVID-19 Pandemic and the $16 Trillion Virus by Larry H. Interview with Clairvoyant Medium (An entrepreneur who sees spirits) - Debbie Anderson

This interview is very interesting. Debbie speaks about spirits and how she saw her first spirit at the age of four years old. She spoke about her decks and how it all started. Debbie is very knowledgeable and experienced with it comes to speaking with the spirit world. ALL ABOUT DEBBIE: It was shortly after her parents divorced, when she was 4, and sharing a bed with her mother, that Debbie A. Anderson, saw the ceiling peel back and ethereal beings of brilliant light sit on the edge of the bed. This was the beginning of a childhood and teen years filled with seeing, hearing and doing what others could not: having more visits by spirit beings, seeing people who had passed over, knowledge of the future, obtaining information about people that could only be obtained through her intuitive gifts, healing people with her hands, and more. But when told by her mother it was time to see the psychiatrist, Debbie's guides painted a picture of her ending up “in a nice white coat (a straight-jacket) in a padded room,” so she suppressed what was really happening and told everyone that she was simply trying to get attention. Nevertheless, in young adulthood and out on her own, she was drawn to Tarot cards, and a community of like-minded people who would meet weekly for meditation, card reading and esoteric exploration. In her 20s Debbie took courses at Arthur Findley College in Stansted, Essex UK (which she says was like attending Hogwarts), and she began to give full reign to her gifts. Encouraged by a friend to attend a past-life regression workshop, she met Chris Lee, who was Canadian, the man who would become her husband. Moving to Canada in 1997, she took a job in the corporate world, but continued to do readings for people on the side. But still reluctant to leave the steady paycheck of corporate life, Debbie got a wake-up call from the Universe after a sequence of injury-causing accidents that make it difficult to work in a traditional job. She knew she was being called to step into her life as a clairvoyant and spirit communicator fully. And part of that was clear direction from her guides to start creating her own oracle decks. She had been traveling with her husband around Canada for his past-life regression workshops and her offering clairvoyant readings, and then in May 2013 when she published her first deck, the Vibrational Oracle Deck, she offered it for sale as they journeyed 13,000 km eastward from British Columbia. The cards were an immediate sellout, and in fact, she has to rush to print an additional 1000. In 2014 she added the Vibrational Earth Children Oracle for youngsters 8 and upward. More recently, she has added the I AM Vibrational and I AM Sacred Affirmation Decks. Today, she has sold more than 20,000 decks and is distributed in Canada, the United States, Australia and New Zealand. She has been doing intuitive spiritual readings for more than 35 years around the world. Born in England, Debbie A. Anderson is a natural healer who has worked in the magical sphere of spirituality all of her life. A clairvoyant medium who now lives in Canada, and has been doing intuitive spiritual readings for more than 35 years around the world. Her beautifully designed and acclaimed oracle decks began appearing in 2013. Debbie's Vibrational Energy (for adults) and Vibrational Earth Children (for inner child & children) are globally distributed and her two new affirmation decks: I AM Vibrational & I AM Sacred, are meeting with equal success. Today Debbie is also one of the leading authorities on how best to use oracle cards for living in alignment with your heart, your soul, the Universe and the purpose you deeply desire to experience. Today Debbie talks shop with another FDN Practitioner and mentor, Ryan Monahan. Ryan Monahan is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P), clinical advisor for the medical director program at FDN, and certified Autoimmune Protocol Coach with a passion for uncovering hidden stressors that contribute to thyroid disease. Ryan spent over 10 years visiting more than 40 health professionals to find answers to his chronic health complaints until being diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2012. Since then, his mission has been to change the dialogue about chronic disease towards a holistic, functional approach. With the help of cutting edge functional lab work, Ryan helps his clients to identify the true root causes of their primary health challenges so that they can stop wasting time and resources, and start living their best life. Typically, his clients are those who have struggled with finding relief from their autoimmune symptoms. Oftentimes, they feel that they've “tried everything”, and that traditional medicine hasn't served them. In his experience, there is a better way. What is your passion, purpose and mission. I spent over 10 years visiting more than 40 health professionals to find answers to my chronic health complaints until being diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2012. Since then, my mission has been to change the dialogue about chronic disease towards a holistic, functional approach while helping others restore their health to normal function. During those 10 years, unbeknownst to me, I was living in an extremely house in north Georgia, and was actually diagnosed with Hashimoto's while living in that house. I'm convinced that mold played a big role in tipping the scales of Metabolic Chaos towards developing an autoimmune condition! My mission is ultimately to become the person that I wish I had helping ME when I was at rock bottom with chronic illness. Today Debbie speaks with Juliette Kayyem, a longtime national security and terrorism expert with over 160,000 followers on Twitter. She has an extraordinary resume of public and private service, starting with the Dept. of Justice as a young lawyer, and then joining the National Commission on Terrorism in 1999 and helping to write their report, published in June 2000, recognizing the growing terror threat in the U.S. She gave birth to her first child a few weeks before 9/11.She became the Assistant Secretary for Intergovernmental Affairs in the Department of Homeland Security, where she handled the agency's response to the H1N1 pandemic and orchestrated the complicated government response to the BP oil spill in 2010. Later she became a Pulitzer Prize-nominated columnist for The Boston Globe and started her own consulting company. She's now a professor at the Harvard Kennedy School and an analyst for CNN. She's also, importantly, the mother of three and the author of a terrific book - part memoir, part primer - titled Security Mom: My Life Protecting the Home and Homeland. Disaster is her thing, or as she puts it: "Sh*t happens."  It's how you assess risk, prepare for, and respond  to disaster that counts. They recorded this conversation before Trump tested positive for COVID so you won’t hear mention of that. But they do talk about the sense of anxiety in this country right now, both because of COVID and because of the current President. And about Trump’s attempts to stoke fear, and to incite violence, with his veiled but clear Tweets. She calls what Trump does on Twitter #stochasticterrorism. To her delight, it’s been adopted as a hash tag. It means random and unpredictable violence which, she tells us, is the definition of terrorism.Debbie loved this brief conversation and hopes you will too. Juliette is an optimist and endlessly energetic. She's a breath of fresh air during this anxiety-ridden period in the U.S. Towards the end of the interview, she says she has to get off the call to get ready for a CNN appearance. She's 51, she tells us, so she needs time to do her hair and make-up. The CNN segment, on which she appeared minutes later, showed her ready for primetime, Zooming in from her home in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Tune in to hear from an optimistic and inspiring Security Mom (a play on Soccer Mom, in case that didn't jump out at you!). Mentioned in this episode or useful:Juliette on Twitter#stochasticterrorismJulietteKayyem.comBio on WikipediaSecurity Mom: An Unclassified Guide to Protecting Our Homeland and Your Home byJuliette Kayyem (Simon & Schuster 2017; original title)Her articles for The AtlanticSenior Lecturer in International Security at Harvard Kennedy SchoolCNN AnalystJuliette on CNN talking about #stochatisticterrorismReport of the National Commission on Terrorism published June 2000U.S. Department of Homeland SecurityHer recent favorite read for relaxation: The Vanishing Half: A Novel  by Brit Bennett We are looking for a sponsor. Dude is a lifelong health and wellness enthusiast and amateur athlete.  Before a brief cross country season in college, Dude was a 2x state champion in the mile, the two mile, and the mile relay. After his first marathon, Dude became interested in Ultramarathons and his endurance career peaked in 2006 when he ran 16 ultramarathons in one year.  Dude has also done some fairly extreme self-supported distance challenges, including two double crossings of the grand canyon, and a 143 mile 3 day adventure in the High Sierra in California.  He has also summited the 3rd highest peak in North America, and many smaller mountains. Like many people in today's society, by mid-life Dude found himself drifting away from being active as the pursuits of career and family consumed so much time and attention.  By 2012, Dude was 50 lbs overweight with aches and pains all over, culminating in a back injury that left him debilitated on the floor, unable to move. The injured back was a wake up call that led Dude on a personal journey back to health and wellness. He lost 50 lbs, started running again, placed 3rd in the Speedgolf World Championships, and earned a Health Coaching certification from the Primal Health Coach Institute. Dude now coaches people how to regain their health after a lifetime of office work and modern lifestyle that keeps us sedentary, indoors, and eating processed foods.  Dude has made the journey himself and has tremendous passion for people who find it difficult to extract themselves from the modern traps that keep us unhealthy.  His mission is to find these people and guide them back to health and vitality. Dr. Dan welcomes colleague and friend Debbie Steinberg Kuntz to today’s episode to discuss our bright and quirky kids.  Debbie is a licensed marriage and family therapist and the founder of Bright and Quirky’s mission statement is powerful:  Ease the struggle for bright and quirky kids and parents, help them self-actualize with the help of experts in the fields of mental health and education, and inspire the hope that new ideas and possibilities bring. When Debbie started her family counseling practice a decade ago, she had no idea the area of 2e (twice-exceptional) would be her specialty. She credits her sons, now teenagers, and their unique strengths and challenges as the inspiration for her life’s work. Early in her parenting journey, Debbie learned that her own sons were ‘2e’ or ‘twice exceptional,’ meaning they are smart and also have unique brain wiring that makes accessing those smarts at times challenging.  As she researched and found solutions for them, she started to share the learning with families in her private practice near Seattle. These kids are very bright and struggle with learning, executive function, social, emotional and/or behavioral challenges. Some have diagnoses such as ADHD, autism/Aspergers, anxiety, depression and learning disabilities like dyslexia. In the winter of 2018, Debbie decided to try an experiment and run a 2e parenting program online. Today the Bright & Quirky Child Online Summit, attracting over 15,000 people from 95 countries featuring World-class psychologists, educators, and child development experts who share tools and insights to help bright & quirky kids thrive.  In fact, Dr. Dan is one of the featured speakers for the third annual online summit which is free if you register (click here to register).  Listeners can go to this link: https://hub.brightandquirky.com/~access/a7c5262f/   Today Debbie works with hundreds of bright-but-busy parents who work for Fortune 500 companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Starbucks, to have a happy home life and equip their kids with the habits to succeed. Since her private practice is typically full, she founded Positive Impact Family to help even more parents transform their family to become more happy, positive, and cooperative, and make a positive impact in the world.   Today’s show covers many topics and features registration information about the 2020 Bright and Quirky Summit as well as the “Idea Lab” learning community, online resources and parenting tools to help navigate: How to meet your uniquely wired child's needs by providing the right supports What it means to be a self-scientist How to teach kids, educators, others to lead with strengths Flipping the script on how we see our 2e kids And Debbie’s Parent Footprint moment advice on the importance of being present and just showing up for our kids For more information on Debbie’s work, the summit and more visit: https://brightandquirky.com/summit-2020/  and https://brightandquirky.com Watch this free video to learn more about Dr. Dan and Parent Footprint Awareness Training®. She left her husband and the children with him and set out to reclaim her confidence and self-worth. She’d been desiring for so long someone to “be nice” to her after experiencing narcissistic abuse that she ended up in another long term relationship of 8 years with another man who lied, cheated, manipulated and was emotionally abusive. That’s when Debbie got really clear on what Debbie needed for herself and took time to heal and mend herself. Debbie attended the Fearless Living Institute with Rhonda Britten and became a coach, the very same school I attended. In fact, that’s where I met Debbie. April is Child Abuse Prevention month. Therefore, we thought it would be a good idea to bring back Feather Berkower, a leading expert in childhood sexual abuse prevention. One of the things that surprised me the most about motherhood was honestly, how complicated it is. I’ll be honest, I brought a lot of baggage into motherhood, from my childhood and from my own mom’s motherhood story.  As it turns out, they way you were mothered influences your own motherhood journey on both sides. I’m not throwing my mom under the bus here friends, I had a great childhood and there is so much about WHO I am that I know is a direct result of how she nurtured and encouraged me. But things made so much more sense to me after I read the book, It’s Momplicated by Joan Edwards Kay and Debbie Asldorf. And I’m super pumped to bring you this interview with them today. In this episode, the three of us share our stories and it’s not all kittens and roses. But, I hope you leave this episode encouraged on the path of walking with Jesus towards healing and hope. Because there is NOTHING that God can’t redeem. Nothing.
