La psychiatrie se présente comme un espace de soin. Mais pour de nombreuses personnes qui en sont revenues, ce qu'elles ont vécu ressemble davantage à une privation de liberté qu'à une thérapie. Chambres d'isolement, hospitalisations sous contrainte, traitements imposés sans consentement — ces pratiques sont légales en France. Et elles continuent.Dans cet épisode, je plonge dans le mouvement pour l'abolition psychiatrique — pas pour dire que la souffrance psychique intense n'existe pas, mais pour poser la question que ce mouvement pose depuis des décennies : est-ce que la coercition peut être du soin ? Je reviens sur les travaux de Tina Minkowitz et sur ce que la Convention des Nations Unies relative aux droits des personnes handicapées dit sur les traitements forcés. J'explore pourquoi la réforme de l'institution — des chambres plus humaines, des durées plus courtes — ne touche pas à ce qui pose problème au fondement. Eberle Professor of Economics at Stanford University and an external faculty member at the Santa Fe Institute. Matthew is one of the founders of the modern economics of networks and the author of The Human Network and Social and Economic Networks.We talk about the friendship paradox, why homophily slows how fast a society learns the truth but helps niche ideas catch fire, and the gossip study where villagers in southern India proved remarkably good at naming the most central spreaders in their community. The LSE Middle East Centre hosted a Kuwait Programme workshop, presenting research on the influence of social media on food-consumption behaviours in Kuwait. Kuwait is experiencing public health challenges driven by rising rates of non-communicable nutrition-related diseases such as diabetes and obesity. According to the World Bank, the prevalence of diabetes in Kuwait increased tenfold between 2000 and 2021, with approximately 25% of Kuwaiti adults now affected. Adding to this issue is the widespread social media culture in Kuwait surrounding food photography. There is a significant trend among individuals, as well as social media influencers, to share food-related content on platforms. The extensive use of digital platforms, combined with Kuwait's unique social media culture, offer new and unique avenues for studying how online content and interactions might shape food-consumption behaviours. This research addresses the influence of social media on food-consumption behaviours in Kuwait. Meet our speakers Fabrício M. Fialho is Assistant Professor of Sociology at HSE University and Research Fellow at the LSE International Inequalities Institute. His current work has focused on public opinion research and quantitative research methods. Abrar Al Hasan is an Associate Professor of Information Systems and Operations Management at the College of Business Administration, Kuwait University. Her research interests include Social Media and Social Networks, Health IT, Online Markets, Digital Innovations, Crowdsourcing, and the Economics of Information Systems. Using Etsy for pattern sales, Patreon for teaching classes and Instagram for promoting her artwork, Hana Hastings, Sand and Fire Works, Grimsby, Ontario, Canada, has acquired a substantial following for her offerings in stained glass. Wanting to differentiate herself from the more traditional glass designs and commonly seen pattern work, Hastings brought nature and natural subjects into the homes of her patrons by experimenting with 3D sculpture and unique textures and colors of glass. Mastering her marketing efforts on social media, the artist grew a following significant enough to dedicate full-time hours to her craft and begin teaching her techniques online to other budding glass artists. Says Hastings: "I've only been a full-time glass artist for five months after nearly two decades of being a hobbyist and in business for six years total. In 2026, I hope to focus less on producing work for sale and more on artistic exploration in my chosen semi-sculptural approach to the Tiffany technique. I'm also absolutely fixated on sustainability in glass art and am working towards being a fully no waste studio." Inspired by nature and her "dangerously vast" collection of houseplants, Hastings developed a series of 3D sculptures in rarely seen textures and colors of glass. She made a name for herself via this unusual and modern take on design in the local glass scene as well as the online sphere. Her new work sells out on Instagram in as little as six minutes on release. With over 270K followers on that platform, Hastings is one of the most followed glass crafters of today. Hastings' work is deeply personal, a connection with glass rooted in the artisan legacy of her grandfather and teacher, Seamus. They spent countless hours of her childhood working together, and those moments shaped her love of glass and knowledge of the craft. Two decades later, the artist channels that heritage into her own practice, designing original work and small sculptures inspired by the forms, geometry and textures found in the natural world.

Gaza, Nationalism, and Two States Welcoming the end of active war between Israel and Hamas and critiquing reconstruction plans that ignore politics Conflict is fundamentally nationalist: a struggle for self-determination by both Jewish and Palestinian peoples Claim: Economic development without a credible political horizon will not prevent "another October 7th and another terrible war." In his view, only partition of mandatory Palestine into two states can meet legitimate self-determination claims. For example, "You can build skyscrapers in Gaza… and it's not going to work" without addressing nationalism. Citizen Diplomacy and a Better Way Foreign policy is not only the work of secretaries of state; democratic citizens have responsibilities. In this episode, we will be discussing the history of social networks of women of African Descent in New Spain. Joining me is Ursula Rall.Ursula is a PhD Candidate in History at Emory University and is currently a dissertation fellow at the McNeil Center for Early American Studies. Her dissertation, titled “Forging Inter-Urban Communities: The Spatial Mobilities and Social Networks of Women of African Descent in New Spain: 1580-1745,” investigates the spatial mobility of Afro-descended women within and between three cities in central Mexico during the seventeenth century: Mexico City, Puebla, and Veracruz. More specifically, her dissertation asserts the contributions of Black women to the decline of the institution of slavery, the social mobility of the Afro-descended population, and Black identity formation in New Spain. Her research has been supported by a Fulbright-Hays doctoral research abroad grant, the American Historical Association, the Forum on Early Modern Empires and Global Interactions, and the Conference on Latin American History. She holds a BA in History from Bates College.

The microbiome, the network of tens of trillions of microbes that live in and on our bodies, helps us digest food and protects us from diseases. And depending on what species of bacteria you have, your microbiome could impact your stress response, decision-making, and how likely you are to develop arthritis and depression.Scientists have known that your microbiome is partially shaped by your environment, and the people you spend your time with. But they haven't had a lot of clarity on how exactly social networks outside of home and family impact our microbiome makeup.To learn more, a team from Yale University mapped the connections among 2,000 people in isolated villages in Honduras and compared their microbiomes to see how exactly their social closeness impacted their gut bacteria. And it turns out, we're more connected to people in our lives than you may think. Their research was published in the journal Nature.Ira Flatow is joined by sociologist and physician Dr. Nicholas Christakis, who directs the Human Nature Lab at Yale University. He studies the biology of human social interactions and was an author on the recent paper.
