In this episode, we discuss how to mitigate these effects and restore gut health through a multifaceted approach. Key Strategies: Regulate Stress & Lower Cortisol: Practices like mindful breathing and HRV training Adaptogens (Ashwagandha, Rhodiola) Morning sun exposure to stabilize cortisol Support Gut Integrity & Reduce Inflammation: L-Glutamine and colostrum for gut repair Bone broth and butyrate to heal the gut lining Rebuild Beneficial Bacteria: Probiotics: Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Bifidobacterium longum Prebiotics: Resistant starch, polyphenols, and fermented foods Support Vagus Nerve Function: Cold exposure and low-intensity exercise to balance the nervous system Improve Sleep: Supplements like Magnesium Glycinate and L-Theanine to support relaxation and reduce cortisol spikes By following these strategies, you can restore microbial balance, reduce inflammation, and enhance resilience to stress. On today's episode of The Health Detective Podcast, we are analyzing Detective Ev's thyroid labs with one of the most knowledgeable Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioners out there, Ryan Monahan! Ryan was the first guest we ever interviewed on this show, and deservedly so. This is a guy who suffered for YEARS with some of the worst fatigue imaginable, as well as depression and many other health symptoms. Fast-track to today, and Ryan is now one of FDN's clinical advisors with a booming business, too.  Overtime, Ryan accumulated multiple advanced certificates through FDN (and other institutes), one of them being granted for the completion of FDN's advanced thyroid training. Because of this, he is the perfect person to helps us dive deep into the thyroid labs we're discussing today.  We hope you enjoy this episode! ***You can watch the video version of this podcast here: https://youtu.be/TJT5Srn2KBM About Ryan: Ryan Monahan is an FDN-P Level III, board certified health coach, Clinical Advisor, and Certified AIP Coach. He has a passion for uncovering hidden stressors that contribute to thyroid disease. Throughout his journey, Ryan spent over 10 frustrating years visiting more than 40 health professionals to find answers to his chronic health complaints until being diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2012. Since then, his mission has been to change the dialogue about chronic disease towards a holistic, functional approach while helping others restore their health to normal function. The From Burnout to Recovery Show with Dr. Kate: Your Journey to Recovery Burnout Starts Here

Episode 46 brings Chelsie Ward to the table with unrealistic expectations as child that caused so many health problems. These only got worse as she got into college and had no energy to do anything. Sugar addiction kept her moving but barely. It was a vicious cycle. Finally realizing that her boundaries were not clear cut and her burnouts were the fault of her own lack of managing time and resources. Every person needs to set the expectation for themselves to pause and be still and breathing intentionally, and doing things that feed their heart and mind. And to protect that time against distractions and priorities. Starting the day calmly, slowly, breathing and focusing on that actually causes a physiological change in our nervous system and organs and relieves pain. Stepping away during the day. Schedule the break to slow down, take a walk, breathe deeply to maintain that calm. Chelsie Ward has a background in Applied Behavior Analysis, is a Registered Nurse, FDN Practitioner, energy healer, and certified in functional medicine. She is the author of, Healed His Way where she shares natural healing techniques that have been used by thousands of others so they can experience health the way it was intended. It was her personal journey of being failed by the traditional medical system that offered no resolution to her digestive issues and hormone imbalances. This led to a final breaking point in her own health. As she searched for answers, she learned that food is medicine and our bodies are created to heal themselves. She helps women transition after birth control so they can balance hormones naturally, improve digestion, and feel confident in a body they love. Our Recovery Moment in this show is focused on a meditation of mindfulness in our speech. If you enjoyed this show make sure to subscribe and leave a review. EPISODE 45: “You're Born Sick, What Now?” with Chelsie Ward   Hello and WELCOME to the “You're _______, What now?” Podcast!   I am your host, Marci Nettles. I have had a lifetime of opportunities where I had the choice to Breakdown or Breakthrough... did I always make the “right” choice?  Nope.  I did however find a way to continue moving forward until I was able to see there was a path through my chaos into joy.  This Podcast may become your light in the darkness, as you listen to the stories of people I consider “heroes.” Each one had a point where they too had to choose to either Breakdown or Breakthrough!   In this episode you will hear of a baby girl born sick, suffered with colic and who through her challenges in her early life, teens and 20's learned the importance of pooping… and many other things of course!  These lessons led to wisdom that she now uses to help others who are ill.  Food is medicine and true healing is possible when we become aware and take responsibility… Everything that we need was here before we as humans were.   Chelsie Ward has been a student of the human mind and body for over 20 years. She has a background in Applied Behavior Analysis, is a Registered Nurse, FDN Practitioner, and spiritual healer. She works with independent, driven, fun-loving people who are tired of hiding from life trying to figure out digestive and hormone imbalances on their own and supports them with a personalized plan so they can love themselves and feel good in their own skin. She is the author of “Healed His Way” where she shares natural healing techniques that have been used by many others so they can experience health the way it was intended.   Thank you for listening!   Please CONNECT and FOLLOW Chelsie:  ChelseWard.com - Make sure to order your book "Healed His Way" on Amazon or directly from Chelsie for a signed copy! She is passionate about educating others about FDN  and the D.R.E.S.S. for Health Success®; Protocols for optimal health so they can live the life they desire"FDN-Practitioner is my professional credential...but your credential isn't "WHAT" you do.  When people ask me what I do, I tell them,  "I help active, health minded, baby boomers get their hands on the functional lab testing and other resources they need to find the missing pieces of their health puzzle & fix what's really wrong so they can get back to feeling like themselves and living the retirement they always dreamed of" In this episode, Adam and Kimberly discuss:What is true health? The problem with fast diagnosis Habits that contribute to your better health  Key Takeaways:Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing - not merely the absence of disease. Don't strive to be “normal”, strive for complete well-being. 15 minutes of talking is not enough to get a complete diagnosis of a person's condition. Doctors often have to think of a solution for your problem quickly, they don't have time to elaborate on why it's happening to you and what you can do to fill the gap. Some just hand out medicine to cover up the symptoms. Small changes are cumulative, just like anything in life. Bad habits are cumulative in their effect but so are good ones. Start where you are and start making little choices that contribute to your better health.  "Start removing one by one - these stresses. We believe that the body has an innate intelligence and if you remove those things from it, it can in fact, and does start to heal itself. You can even greatly improve and in some cases, reverse a diagnosis if you just get very specific to you." —  Kimberly JenkinsConnect with Kimberly Jenkins:Website:  http://www.functionalhealthgroup.org/Email:  kboehm@functionalhealthgroup.orgLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/kimberly-jenkins-boehm-4b3484174/    Connect With Adam Weber:Website: https://meditationnotmedicine.com/about/Email: adam@meditationnotmedicine.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/easytomeditate Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meditationnotmedicine/  Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPnbji9rDrCfxhY0W8sHL9ABook: Meditation Not Medicine Show notes by Podcastologist: Justine Talla.Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Essentially You: Empowering You On Your Health & Wellness Journey With Safe, Natural & Effective Solutions

If You Want To Improve Your Pelvic Floor Health, You Should: Stop thinking about your body as individual muscles and instead think of it as a whole entity  Pay attention to your symptoms and how they may be related to pelvic floor dysfunction Seek out a specialist to get an opinion on how you can strengthen your pelvic floor and deep core   When it comes to pelvic floor issues, a lot of women struggle in silence. But the truth is, there is so much that we can do to correct pelvic floor issues while improving our overall health. While very few people talk about pelvic floor health, it can impact your body as a whole, even if you have never had babies. This is why it is so essential to understand what is going on with your pelvis so that you can get back to living life without worrying about where the closest bathroom is.   Getting to the Root Cause of Your Imbalance With Erica Ziel Erica Ziel is a mom of three, an FDN Practitioner, certified personal trainer and Pilates instructor, health and nutrition coach, and deep core exercise specialist. Her mission is to help women live healthier lives and heal their bodies through movement, wellness, intuition, and breathwork. Erica is the founder and creator of Core Athletica®️, The Core Rehab Program, Knocked-Up Fitness®️, and The Core Connections Podcast host. She believes that anything you want to improve your health and life, you can!   Everything in the Body Is Connected Erica believes that we have to stop looking at the body as individual muscles and instead focus on how our body as a whole is working. While it is very rare for any woman to be in perfect alignment, it is crucial to look at how the right and left sides of your body work together to identify where dysfunction may be causing a problem.  Back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, and stubborn weight around the pelvis can all be signs of pelvic floor dysfunction, even if you aren't having specific pelvic symptoms. By working to correct the imbalances of your pelvic position and release the tension in your fascia, you can get your deep core working for you again.   The Problem With Kegels As women, we have been told to follow traditional ab exercises and pelvic floor exercises such as Kegels. But these movements could actually be leading to my dysfunction and weakness than if you engage with core exercises that activate your pelvic floor the right way. Erica's program helps women strengthen the pelvic floor fascia and their deep core muscles to hold up the organs more effectively and relieve pelvic floor symptoms. It is time to ditch the mindset of going faster and harder to gain results. Your pelvic floor is asking you to slow down and take care of your body now so that you can speed up later. It is only by getting to the root cause of our pelvic floor imbalance that we can get out of pain and dysfunction once and for all. Are you ready to start paying attention to this vital part of your body to improve your overall health? Share what shocked you most about your pelvic floor with me in the comments section of the episode page.   Quotes: “We are understanding that we have this right side of our body and the left side of our body, and if one side is really overcompensating, it is telling me that there is a reason.” (8:18) “I am of the belief that we can really and truly heal our body when we start to learn about our body.”  (8:48) “There is so much more to strengthening our core than just doing ‘abdominal exercises'. In order to really, properly strengthen our deep core, we have got to bring awareness to what our pelvic floor is doing.” (15:32) “If you have diastasis recti if you have back pain, hip pain, knee pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, stuff like that, I would say that you should learn more about your pelvic floor. Because there is a really high chance that there is some pelvic floor dysfunction going on, you just aren't having symptoms yet.” (21:59) “Our body has this incredible innate ability to heal and get stronger than we have ever been. We just have to get our ego brain out of the way.” (25:53)   In This Episode Discover the root causes that are causing your pelvic pain, even if you have never had babies (7:08) Learn about fascia and why you need to be paying attention to yours (9:59) The first thing that you should do if you want to improve your pelvic floor and overall health (14:37) What you can do to activate your pelvic floor as a whole and minimize pelvic floor dysfunction symptoms (21:20) When you should get involved with a pelvic floor specialist (26:38)   Resources Mentioned: Use Promo Code ‘drmariza' for 15% off your Paleo Valley Grassfed Beef Sticks Your Free Pelvic Floor Guide Erica Ziel Website  Core Connections Podcast Follow Erica on Facebook | Instagram | YouTube | Pinterest   Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes:  Essentially You Episode #226: How to Address Pelvic Floor Dysfunction and Bladder Leakage Naturally with Maryellen Reider Essentially You Episode #137: How to Naturally Heal from Chronic Pelvic Pain with Isa Herrera

In this episode, we are interviewing one of the newest FDN grads, Falyn Morningstar! Fal holds a bachelor's degree in Business, is completing a graduate degree in Environmental Engineering and is a Certified FDN Practitioner. Her passion for physical fitness started in 2016 which led to getting a personal training certification in 2018. She competed in powerlifting and trained as a bodybuilder while working full time in a local government office, going to graduate school part time, training clients, not to mention trying to have a social life outside of that. She was eating her calculated macronutrients every 2-4 hours, she was listening to the "sleep less, work harder" community, she was a productive type A woman who was doing everything she thought was right to be successful and happy. So, why did she feel so bloated and unbelievably fatigued? Why could she not recover from training like she used to? Why was she losing more body hair than usual and why did she develop an odd body odor? And, let's not forget her missing cycle as well. Why was she not menstruating after a decades use of the hormonal birth control pill? If Falyn didn't get the help she needed, a diagnosis of autoimmunity may have been in the near future.  The FDN philosophy is where she was able to heal and get the answers she needed. On today's episode of the podcast, I interview Autumn Smith, the co-founder of Paleovalley and Wild Pastures.   She holds a Masters in Holistic Nutrition, is a Certified Eating Psychology Coach and FDN Practitioner, and was an absolute joy to interview!   We talk about our health journeys and how she resolved her struggles with IBS, anxiety, and her relationship with food when she started focusing on the quality of her nutrition, not just the quantity.   As her health completely transformed, she became driven to make healthy, nutrient-dense products more accessible to her family, clients, and fellow parents.   As a dietitian and mom myself, it was great to chat about how out of hand our kids' snack culture has gotten and what companies like Paleovalley can do to help change it. Our kids and our own health are too often hijacked by hyper-palatable, processed foods, and accessible, real food options not only lead to better health and cognition, but they're also delicious.   If you've been following me or talk with any of my clients, you'll know Paleovalley's beef sticks are my go-to snack. I always have a few in my purse or car just in case I get in a pinch and need healthy nutrition.   Give this episode a listen and check out the show notes for a discount on your own bundle of Paleovalley snacks! Today Debbie talks shop with another FDN Practitioner and mentor, Ryan Monahan. Ryan Monahan is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P), clinical advisor for the medical director program at FDN, and certified Autoimmune Protocol Coach with a passion for uncovering hidden stressors that contribute to thyroid disease. Ryan spent over 10 years visiting more than 40 health professionals to find answers to his chronic health complaints until being diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2012. Since then, his mission has been to change the dialogue about chronic disease towards a holistic, functional approach. With the help of cutting edge functional lab work, Ryan helps his clients to identify the true root causes of their primary health challenges so that they can stop wasting time and resources, and start living their best life. Typically, his clients are those who have struggled with finding relief from their autoimmune symptoms. Oftentimes, they feel that they've “tried everything”, and that traditional medicine hasn't served them. In his experience, there is a better way. What is your passion, purpose and mission. I spent over 10 years visiting more than 40 health professionals to find answers to my chronic health complaints until being diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2012. Since then, my mission has been to change the dialogue about chronic disease towards a holistic, functional approach while helping others restore their health to normal function. During those 10 years, unbeknownst to me, I was living in an extremely house in north Georgia, and was actually diagnosed with Hashimoto's while living in that house. I'm convinced that mold played a big role in tipping the scales of Metabolic Chaos towards developing an autoimmune condition! My mission is ultimately to become the person that I wish I had helping ME when I was at rock bottom with chronic illness. Debbie and Dina start to dive deep into the unknown subject of training and fueling the low carb FEMALE athlete to improve performance and longevity. There is NOT much research conducted in this area so we need to start to use our own N = 1 experiment. Start to reduce your external and hidden internal stressors with functional lab testing and clinical correlation with an FDN Practitioner health detective as myself, Debbie, for starters! You don't know what is "under the hood" unless you run well-chosen functional lab testing and correlate data together to put the missing pieces of the puzzle together. Coaches should always strive to build training according to their athletes' unique physiology, but how many of our training practices are weighted toward the male experience? How does our nutrition and hydration affect performance? What doe you think is outdated science that has led to one-size-fits-all training? How do our female hormones affect the way we train and perform on race day?  How are women different than men? Most of our research is based on men- so how should we interpret data and recommendations for the female athlete – premenopausal and post menopausal? Should women train have fasted?  Or are we causing additional source of stress? Should female athletes follow a ketogenic diet?  Do female endurance athletes need carbs… how much is too low or too high?  Discuss the menstrual cycle- training and fueling based on our cycle days. How does the status of the female's microbiome impact our fueling, training and performing? How should the female athlete hydrate differently than men? Recovery tips for the female athlete vs. male athlete Training and racing in hot environments- female vs. male athlete transition into peri-menopause? what about to menopause and post-menopause —> How should female athletes adjust nutrition or what should they be paying attention to? Stacy doesn't recommend fasting in the book due to concerns for cortisol levels, fat gain, etc…. Can you share some thoughts on this? Is keto appropriate? (loaded question!) training nutrition - can refer to your notes on pages 6-8 and ask me a question or two about fueling recommendations?  (not sure how you want to ask that) recovery nutrition - what should women athletes keep in mind?  hydration - what are changes that women experience as they age? what they can do?  Of course we ran out of time so stay connected to learn more in upcoming episodes! My response lately on my podcast- Eat real food and mixture of macros that balances your blood sugar, provides long lasting satiety, energy and curbs cravings... we want to be fat burners not sugar burners!   If we only treat our symptoms, even if getting functional detailed labs to find out our imbalances, we only feel “good”  temporarily.  As a Nutritional Therapy Practitioner and soon to be a FDN-Practitioner, I am implementing my training into my coaching program - The WHOLESTIC Method.  In order to feel alive and thriving each day- we need to work on putting the pieces of the puzzle together with a combination of WHOLEIST method approach:   Functional Lab Testing Nutritional Therapy Assessment Nutritional Therapy Functional Evaluation Genetic Testing assessment via DNAFit The WHOLESTIC Method Lifestyle Improvements Metabolic Typing Assessment Metabolic Efficiency Testing   If we don't find answers…we should look at the WHOLE picture as lab testing and supplementation is only part of the solution.  Treating the symptoms is similar to placing a band-aid on the problem- instead we should look at the WHY and work on correlating the answers.  We need to put the pieces of the puzzle together- or else we continue to have symptoms downstream.  We need to work north and work our way south with the use of labs, nutritional assessment, food log with symptoms, lifestyle habits and genetics.  As a FDN-Practitioner and a NTP, my job as a health coach is to use all the “tools”, including functional labs, to identify healing opportunities to restore function and balance back to a client's body-  “Optimal NORMAL” is their homeostasis.  The secret sauce on restoring health and vitality, is a client's commitment to adopting new lifestyle behaviors, nutritional therapy and healing therapy plan.  If a client is not motivated to do their homework, then we are not able to work together.  In FDN as a practitioner, we coach clients with the tools to rebuild their vital and metabolic reserve while we “coach down” their contributors to “METABOLIC CHAOS” to help the client return to the land of vitality.  As we work together to create an individualized plan to solve the reason a client experiences “METABOLIC CHAOS” – their symptoms ideally disappear!  As FDN Practitioners, we don't treat anything specific since we don't treat the symptoms- but we treat the WHOLE body as one system and get the “engine” running back at optimal level.  Healing takes time, and I know it as my healing journey has taken years to rebuild and renew myself.  My client needs to have reasonable expectations as we all should learn from my errors or mistakes- there is not an easy fix or a magic pill (or supplement) that fixes you.  A new you must be built with a new approach to how we live life each day! “Symptoms may be far removed from the causal factors or stressors found upstream” ~ Reed Davis, founder FDN-P As a certified FDN practitioner, we help improve the function of body systems with the right assessments including identifying internal and external stressors.  The internal “HIDDEN” stressors with functional lab testing: Hormones Immune Digestion Detoxification Energy Nervous The individualized healing program for clients ideally will improve function as we remove the HIDDEN internal stressors.  The lab testing we use as a FDN Practitioner will help identify dysfunction and sources of imbalance leading to METABOLIC CHAOS.  As we identify the individual's healing opportunities and find the right nutrition plan with Metabolic Typing, we can implement the right protocols for success along with observations, re-evaluation and re-testing as appropriate. The lab testing packages include: self treat and send payment to lab as per directions Biohealth 205A Hormone Panel - saliva for hormones (or DUTCH test) Biohealth101 Metabolic Assessment Profile- urine for assessing protein digestion, liver detoxification and oxidative stress  Biohealth Intestinal Permeability- signs and symptoms of leaky gut Biohealth 401H GI Pathogen Screen or the GI Map– stool testing for gut infection and infestation (parasites, bacteria, fungi, yeast and Biofilms) Oxford Mediator Release Test (MRT) or ELISA/ACT for identifying food sensitivities that may cause stress via inflammation and irritating the gut.  Stool culture to assess pathology and dysbiosis including tri-chrome stain, stool antigens, yeast, Occult blood and H. pylori.  OATS- Organic Acids Test Debbie Potts The WHOLESTIC Method Burn Fat.
