There's been a major development this week for the appeal hopes of one of the country's most notorious criminals. Tony Mokbel, who became a household name during Melbourne's gangland wars in the early noughties, could soon walk free, after a judge ruled his lawyer had perverted the course of justice by feeding information to the police in the lead up to his arrest. So how likely is it that his case, and a number of others, will be overturned? Veteran crime journalist Adam Shand joins Sacha Barbour Gatt on this episode of The Briefing to explain. He was one of the biggest figures in Melbourne's Underbelly. She was his lawyer. And, as it turns out, the biggest snitch of all. Tony Mokbel is widely regarded as the organiser of Melbourne's methamphetamine business. And in 2006 he became Australia's most wanted man, escaping the country on a yacht bound for Greece. He was caught a year later, wearing what would become the most famous wig in Australian crime. Beside him through all of it was Nicola Gobbo. A prominent Melbourne lawyer she acted for many of the underworld, including Carl Williams. But unbeknown to them, she was simultaneously acting for another- Melbourne Police. Years of informing on her clients earned her the nickname Lawyer X and the police several high-profile collars. But she couldn't stay secret for long. The scandal rocked Australia. Criminals started appealing convictions, on the basis Gobbo's evidence was tainted. Including Mokbel, in court this month appealing his sentence for serious drug charges. Criminal lawyer Katherine Dowling joins Tim Clarke to comb through the history of Tony Mokbel and his extraordinary claims about the lawyer who used to defend him. With Purana still gathering evidence to support their case, Federal Police, led by Agent Jarrod Ragg, who’d been relentlessly pursuing Tony for some time, made the request to have Tony’s bail revoked. But without the evidence to support their reasoning, Justice Gillard did not revoke bail just yet.Instead, Tony was free to go after his day in court on Friday March the 17th, 2006. Outside court, he gave Purana Detective Jim Coghlan from the Asset Location Squad, a new mobile number he was using. Tony smiled at Jim as he scrawled the number on his palm.On Monday the 20th of March, 2006, Tony didn’t report for bail at South Melbourne Police station, and his legal team led by Con Helitois, were forced to withdraw from the case. Andrew “Benji” Veniamin was now spending the best part of his days with a new best mate; despite him allegedly accepting a contract from Jason Moran to off Carl. The way Benji told it, he’d gotten his way into the roof cavity of Carl’s house one night, and was primed to do the job, when he heard Roberta singing to their daughter Dhakota, while putting her to bed.Benji knew then, he couldn't kill Carl. Others might think the lure of easy drug money on offer from the likes of Tony Mokbel, and his friend Carl, spoke louder than Roberta’s singing voice.Whatever the case, Benji had his foot in their camp now, and it wouldn’t be long until he put his skills to use, skills he’d be building up since his childhood…Join Shaun for Part 3 of The Melbourne Gangland Killings.Join our Patreon community for access to exclusive extra content:Patreon - https://www.patreon.com/truebluecrimeLink to one-off Supporter donations at the bottom of show notesWebsite - www.truebluecrimepodcast.com - includes our merch storeFacebook - https://www.facebook.com/groups/380493356066315/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/truebluecrime/Email - truebluecrime@gmail.comThis episode was produced by True Blue Media using the open source materials referenced below:Underbelly: The Gangland War, by John Silvester and Andrew RuleBig Shots by Adam ShandCarl Williams by Adam ShandUnderbelly series of novels by John Silvester and Andrew RuleI, Mick Gatto, by Mick Gatto and Tom NobleUnderbelly, Series 1, Nine NetworkFat Tony & Co, Nine NetworkTough Nuts, Nikolai RadevDead Famous, Melbourne’s underworld warhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melbourne_gangland_killings Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/true-blue-crime. It’s August, 2005, and Nicola Gobbo’s life is about to go in a direction she never anticipated. Nicola is a successful defence barrister, best known for defending Melbourne’s most prolific organised crime figures, from Carl Williams to Tony Mokbel. But things have become very messy. She wants to get what she calls the ‘Mokbel monkey’ off her back. She’s become too involved in ways she says she never intended. She’ll later say she’s tired of being stood over by criminals who are manipulating the justice system. She’s scared and distressed, and close to breaking down. When Nicola Gobbo arrives at the courthouse and finds two detectives standing outside, words spill out of her mouth and tears fall down her face. She tells them things she shouldn’t. The detectives see this as an opportunity, and suggest something that’s never been done before. Her decision that day would affect thousands of people, and ultimately force her into hiding. The most resounding question when it comes to Nicola’s behaviour is: why? This episode was originally published on October 22nd and is part of our 2020 Best Of series.
