They are the titans of the spy novel, who have elevated thrillers to the level of literary fiction. Much imitated, much adapted by the big and small screens, Ian Fleming and John Le Carré have painted our picture of post-war espionage: Fleming through the dashing figure of James Bond, with his lush locations and Martinis as icy as his heart; Le Carré through his damning portrait of the British secret service drawn from his own time in MI5 and MI6. But which of the two novelists is the greater? In this thrilling contest, Fleming's case was made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis. Championing Le Carré – whose memoir about his life as a former spy currently sits in the bestseller lists – was David Farr, Emmy-nominated screenwriter of the BBC's adaptation of The Night Manager. Actors Lesley Manville, Simon Callow, Matthew Lewis and Alex Macqueen joined us to bring both authors' works to life along with our host, author and critic Erica Wagner. ---- If you'd like to become a Member and get access to all our full ad free conversations, plus all of our Members-only content, just visit intelligencesquared.com/membership to find out more. Alex and James review Anthony Horowitz's third and final Bond novel, With A Mind To Kill. Set after the events of The Man With The Golden Gun (the original Ian Fleming novel, not the slide-whistle stunt film), the story sees Bond sent back into the heart of Russia to face the people who brainwashed him to kill M - while pretending that mission was successful. The stakes are raised as they evaluate him for another mission with dire consequences. Will he succeed? Will he be discovered? And how does this compare to Horowitz's Trigger Mortis and Forever And A Day? Spoilers abound, as we review With A Mind To Kill. Detective Inspector Cara Grunshaw. She's still smarting from her failure to solve the case described in the second Hawthorne adventure: "The Sentence is Death". She blames Anthony for her failure. And now she's out for revenge.Thrown into prison and brutally interrogated, Anthony is the prime suspect in Throsby's murder and as a second theatre critic is found to have died in mysterious circumstances, the net closes in. Ever more desperate, he realizes that only one man can help him.But will Hawthorne take the call? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode of NPR's Book of the Day podcast, we're spotlighting two thrillers. First, astronaut Chris Hadfield talked with former NPR host Lulu Garcia-Navarro about his novel The Apollo Murders, which is set in the 70's around, you guessed it, the Apollo missions. Then, a 2015 interview with NPR's Robert Siegel and author Anthony Horowitz about his James Bond novel Trigger Mortis, and what it's like giving a classic a 21st century twist.
This Friday, we're featuring two thrillers. First, astronaut Chris Hadfield talked with former NPR host Lulu Garcia-Navarro about his novel The Apollo Murders, which is set in the 70's around, you guessed it, the Apollo missions. It's got Soviet spies and secret space stations with machine guns mounted to the top. What more could a book need? Then a 2015 interview with NPR's Robert Siegel and author Anthony Horowitz about his James Bond novel Trigger Mortis, and what it's like giving a classic a 21st century twist.
Following our review of Anthony Horowitz's debut Bond novel Trigger Mortis, we take a look at his second 007 story. 007 is dead, and an up-and-coming young agent (one James Bond) has been sent to investigate. Listen in as we walk through this tale of intrigue set in the south of France built around a gangsters, a cruise ship with plenty of fire extinguishers, a brilliant older woman character, a great NotFelix, some strong action sequences, and a Spider-Man style villain. Spoiler alert if you haven't read the book. If you want to email us, you can do so via bondandbeyondpod@gmail.com. James and Alex tackle their first book review: Trigger Mortis by Anthony Horowitz. SPOILER WARNING: We basically break down the whole book. In this non-Fleming Bond novel written in Fleming's style, 007 must protect a British racing legend from Russian assassins during a dangerous race on the Nurburgring - but that's not actually the plot. We talk about Horowitz's blend of action and insight into Bond, his attempt at creating an iconic Bond villain, the return of Pussy Galore and more. Anthony Horowitz talks about giving new life to characters after their original authors have died. He does it with Ian Fleming’s James Bond - 2 continuation novels Trigger Mortis & now in paperback Forever and A Day. He’s also done it with Sherlock Holmes. And he’s a hugely successful writer of young adult books and TV - Foyle’s War and Midsomer Murders, to name but a few. But should popular characters be left alone when their creators die? Are we greedy or blinded by royalties to demand that they’re given extra life after death? Can continuation novels ever live up to the originals? All that and some startling revelations from Anthony Horowitz. We also talk about Sophie Hannah’s resurrection of Agatha Christie’s Poirot and much more on this episode of We’d Like A Word. There's also a competition to win one of Anthony’s books - but you'll have to listen to find out. We'd Like A Word is a podcast and radio show from Paul Waters and Stevyn Colgan. We talk with writers, readers, celebrities, talkers, poets about books, songs, lyrics, speeches, scripts, fiction and non-fiction. We go out once a fortnight on Wednesday evening on radio and on Thursday morning on podcast. Our website is www.wedlikeaword.com - which is where you'll find information about Paul and Steve and our guests - and details of the radio stations that carry We'd Like A Word. We're also on Twitter @wedlikeaword and Facebook @wedlikeaword and our email is wedlikeaword@gmail.com - and yes, we are slightly embarrassed by the missing apostrophes. We like to hear from you - your thoughts, ideas, guest or book suggestions. Perhaps you'd like to come on We'd Like A Word in person, to chat, review, meet writers or read out passages from books.

In this thrilling contest, Fleming’s case will made by Anthony Horowitz, creator of the bestselling Alex Rider spy novels and author of the official Bond continuation novel Trigger Mortis. Championing Le Carré – whose memoir about his life as a former spy currently sits in the bestseller lists – will be David Farr, Emmy-nominated screenwriter of the BBC’s adaptation of The Night Manager. ‘Fleming is one of the very few writers – Charles Dickens and JK Rowling might be two others – who have transcended fiction, who...
