Welcome to the twenty-fifth episode of Best Issue Ever! This week we're talking to Phillip Sevy, who does the art for the Astonishing X-Men and has worked on a lot of the Infinity Comics for Marvel Unlimited. You can also check out their new book, Don't Forget Your Briefcase, available through the great Mad Cave Studios. Phillip has brought us Midnight Nation #4, which was written by J. Michael Strazynski, with art by Gary Frank, inks by Jonathan Sibal and Jason Gorder, colors by Matt Milla, and letters by Robin Spehar and Dennis Heisler. This podcast is recorded in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. It is edited by Sara Century. The theme music is provided by Earth Control Pill, whose work is on Bandcamp. I do not want to deal with ads AT ALL, so if you also don't want to deal with ads, please consider supporting the podcast by rating and reviewing and/or signing up at the Ko-fi or Patreon @ ko-fi.com/saracenturypodcasts. or patreon.com/saracenturypodcasts. Welcome true believers to X-Men Horoscopes where each week our host Lodro Rinzler is in conversation with a special guest to discuss the X-Men issue that aligns with a significant month and year from their life and what that issue reveals about their future. Amazing comic artist Phillip Sevy joins us this week for a beautiful X-Men Go To Japan issue! That's right, Phillip's birth month and year issue coincides with Uncanny X-Men 173, where, right before he gets married, Wolverine and his sidekick Rogue take on the majority of Japan's underworld to save the X-Men and his bride. Also in this episode: we delve into Philips artistic influences Wolverine is a badass Phillip's Claremontian words vs art theory Lodro thought ninja sais would be more of a thing as an adult we review the range of comic book injuries from "looking tired" to "blast energy on your chest" Cyclops is bad at introducing his girlfriends Lilandra always carries a lightsaber Storm goes punk Lockheed isn't a cat Wolverine is ready for love Mastermind is the worst ...and more! What does any of this mean for Phillip's future? Tune in to find out! Phillip Sevy is an artist who has spent the last few years drawing for Marvel on titles like X-Men (Astonishing, Unlimited, and From the Ashes), Avengers, Venom, Deadpool, and others. They broke into the comics industry through the Top Cow Talent Hunt, where they drew The Tithe and The Freeze, before moving over to Dark Horse for a lengthy run on Tomb Raider. They wrote The House (with artist Drew Zucker), and wrote and drew Triage, Paradox, and Kepler (with David Duchovny). When they're not feverishly working on comics, you can find them (literally) running around their neighborhood, hiking in the hills, or DMing endless sessions of DnD. You can find more of Phillip on Instagram and Bluesky. More of Lodro Rinzler's work can be found here and here and you can follow the podcast on Instagram at xmenpanelsdaily where we post X-Men comic panels...daily. Yes, it's been awhile. I've been on a bit of a hiatus from comics press since June to make some comics of my own. As a quick plug, be sure to check out Nightmare Theater 2 on Kickstarter. That's where you'll find “Going Viral,” an 8 page short written by me, illustrated by Sonya Kinsey, and lettered by Scott Ewen. I'm excited! This episode features the return of Phillip Sevy and Drew Zucker, the creators of The House. This incredibly creepy series began as a digital-first comic, then made the jump to print for a collected edition on Kickstarter. Now, it's available in a new revised edition at your local comic shop through Dark Horse Comics. It's coming to bookshops and Amazon in the next week or so.  I was an early advocate for The House so I'm really excited for Phillip and Drew as the series makes the jump to Dark Horse. If you missed out on the previous versions, you are in for a treat as this psychological horror is sure to get under your skin. Phillip can be found online on Twitter as @PhillipSevy, on Instagram as @PhillipSevyComicArt, and at his official website, PhillipSevy.com. Drew can be found online on Twitter as @Drew_Zucker, on Instagram as @ArtOfDrewZucker, and at his official website, ArtOfDrewZucker.com.  I'm still figuring some stuff out regarding press, comics, and life, so I can't confirm when the next episode of Funny Book Splatter will be, but thank you for keeping the show on your podcast apps and giving it a listen. It is very much appreciated.  CONTACT: Email | Twitter SUBSCRIBE: RSS | Apple Podcasts | Google Play | Stitcher | Spotify Music by Eric Matyas (www.soundimage.org)

Somebody that Dan has had the opportunity to talk to is someone we've been a fan of for some time - writer/artist Phillip Sevy, the chap behind the excellent work on books such as TOMB RAIDER, PARADOX and TITHE. Here, talking on the very busy floor of the first day of the con, Sevy gets into all of the latest books he's working on, including THE FREEZE, written and created by Dan Wickline and published by Image Comics/Top Cow, and horror/thriller THE HOUSE, written by Sevy and featuring art from Drew Zucker and Jen Hickman, These are two ace books, indicative of the singular talent and voice that Sevy brings to his work, they are well worth checking out. Here’s the initial issue’s description: “The entire human population is frozen by a mysterious global event... all except Ray, and only he has the power to unfreeze them. Now with the fate of the world in his hands, he must figure out what is going on, how to set things right again, and answer the question: Does everyone deserve to be saved?” We discuss how the book came to be and get some hints as to what might happen in the coming months with this excellent series. R. Thomas can be found online on Twitter at @RThomasFavino and Voodoo Detective can be found at Facebook.com/VoodooDetective. In other news, October is a huge month for horror comics and I’ve got quite a few updates for you.  Ben Grisanti is back on Kickstarter for issue #2 of Polybius Dreams, the series about a small town driven to chaos by a haunted arcade game in the 1980s. Phillip Sevy and Drew Zucker have completed their awesome digital series, The House and have just launched a Kickstarter campaign to release a collected edition.  Finally, Michael R. Martin has also just launched a Kickstarter campaign for the second volume of the vampire series, Blood & Dust: Glenny Family Values.  As always, I’ve personally backed these projects myself.  I encourage you to do the same as these are some pretty awesome books right here. It should come as no surprise to listeners of Funny Book Splatter that I love indie comics just as much, if not more than the books coming out of the larger publishers.  Between platforms like Kickstarter and Patreon, there are a lot of ways for creators to get their comics out into the world.  This week I spoke with a creative team publishing digitally through ComiXology Submit with The House.  Writer Phillip Sevy and artist Drew Zucker have created one of the scariest comics I’ve read in recent memory and each issue has really upped the ante.  The House follows a group of Allied Soldiers in World War II who find shelter in an ancient and creepy house during a snowstorm only to find that the building is trying to kill them.  It’s great atmospheric horror that really builds up over time.   I have a tone that I aim for with every episode of Funny Book Splatter and this conversation with Phillip and Drew is exactly what I’m looking for.  It’s a fun chat with two guys that love the horror genre and are making some excellent horror comics.  The first four issues of The House are currently available on ComiXology.   Phillip can be found online on Twitter.  Drew can be found online on Twitter and Instagram. I want to give a quick shoutout to Mr. Roberts who gave Funny Book Splatter its first review on iTunes.  It was five stars and very much appreciated.  As a reminder, reviews and ratings on iTunes help the show tremendously so please be like Mr. Roberts and help spread the word.  Thank you again.   SUBSCRIBE: RSS | iTunes | Google Play | Stitcher Music by Eric Matyas (www.soundimage.org)
