On Wednesday 24 January 2024 at the National Theatre's Olivier Theatre not only did over 80 young blind and partially sighted children attend the audio described performance of Roald Dahl's ‘The Witches', but 12 year-old Eleanor who is also visually impaired delivered the live audio description script for this performance too. Eleanor worked with the National Theatre's Audio Describers Roz Chalmers and Andrew Holland as a consultant on the audio description script for ‘The Witches' to ensure that the language and wording would be right for a young audience, and when it came to the schools described matinee performance on 24 January 2024, with over 80 young visually impaired children in the audience it was an obvious choice to ask Eleanor to deliver the live audio description script too.  Eleanor is no stranger to theatre, performing and voice over work as you can hear Eleanor voicing the Character of 'Lark' in ‘Milo' on Channel 5's Milkshake (2021 - 2024) and was Tiny Tim in the Old Vic Theatre's production of ‘A Christmas Carol' (2019,2020 and 2021) to name just a couple of her acting credits so far. Eleanor along with David Bellwood, Head of Access at the National Theatre, joined RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey to talk about how Eleanor not only got involved in working on the audio description script for ‘The Witches' but also why David and the NT felt it was an obvious choice to have Eleanor deliver the live description for the children's matinée performance on 24 January 2024. Eleanor also explained to Toby how she was able to read over 400 lines of Braille during the performance and how the technical wizard's at the NT came up with a novel way of enabling Eleanor to open and close her mic when delivering her Braille description script. RNIB Connect Radio's Toby Davey caught up with Giles Jackson, Assistant Curator at Tate St Ives for an insight into the life and work of Barbara Hepworth and her work which is on display in the exhibition ‘Barbara Hepworth:  Life & Art' too. Giles then talked about Barbara Hepworth's early studies at Leeds School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, her travels around Europe and life in London too and how her early work during these times is explored through the exhibition. Toby and Giles then discussed on how well Barbara Hepworth fitted in with the people and artist community in St Ives and how the local Cornish landscape and people influenced some of her work with examples that are also on display in the exhibition too.  The exhibition also includes some of Barbara Hepworth's stage designs for a production at the Old Vic Theatre in London and also explores her interest in science and technology too.  ‘Barbara Hepworth:  Art & Life' continues at Tate St Ives until 1 May 2023, more details about the exhibition and access at Tate St Ives can be found on the following website or by emailing Visiting .stives@tate.org.uk or calling 0173 679 6226. https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-st-ives/barbara-hepworth-art-and-life Image shows: Dame Barbara Hepworth, Oval Sculpture (No.2) (1943, cast 1958) Tate Barbara Hepworth © Bowness. But not even he knows what has happened to the man he used to be.Anthony Horowitz is one of the most prolific and successful writers working in the UK – and is unique for working across so many media. Anthony is also an acclaimed writer for adults and was commissioned by the Conan Doyle Estate and Orion Books to write two new Sherlock Holmes novels. The House of Silk was published in November 2011 and was internationally lauded as the top title of the autumn. The sequel, Moriarty, was published in October 2014 with similar success. Most recently he was commissioned by the Ian Fleming Estate to write the James Bond novel Trigger Mortis, which was published on 8th September 2015.Anthony is responsible for creating and writing some of the UK's most beloved and successful television series, producing the first seven episodes (and the title) of Midsomer Murders. Anthony has also written other original complex dramas for ITV, particularly thrillers. Collision, a major five part “state of the nation” piece was transmitted on ITV1 in November 2009 to seven million viewers a night. He followed this with the equally successful legal thriller Injustice, also for ITV 1 - transmitted in June 2011. Foyle's War returned in March 2013 as a Cold War thriller and was greeted with such critical acclaim and demands for more that he wrote one final series, bringing the show to an end in January 2015. Anthony's latest show New Blood will premiere on BBC iPlayer later this year.Anthony is on the board of the Old Vic Theatre. He regularly contributes to a wide variety of national newspapers and magazines on subjects ranging from politics to education and currently has a travel column in The Telegraph. The valuable work the organization does right in the heart of the community – bringing together trained volunteers into families lives to support them both practically and emotionally, helping them to grow in confidence and empowering them with the skills to raise their children to flourish – is why Anthony chose to support this dedicated and hardworking charity. And in Anthony's own word – “For me, charity begins at Home-Start.”Anthony was awarded an OBE for his services to literature in January 2014.

Historically Speaking-Uncommon History with an Unconventional Pair

Shakespeare's Macbeth is a fascinating figure- resourceful, brave, insightful, reflective, but it's his inordinate ambition that leads to his downfall. Can the same be said of Scotland's real Macbeth? Here in Episode 29, we unpack the characters in Shakespeare's play Macbeth alongside their historical (or mythical) counterparts including Banquo, Malcolm, McDuff, even the witches. We also let you in on a few theatre traditions involving “The Scottish Play” as well as why you can never say the word Macbeth in a theatre. Episode Notes:The word Bard means poet and because William Shakespeare was from the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, he was known as the Bard of Avon. Even though the title was never officially bestowed, in 1769 the Shakespearean actor David Garrick is credited with organizing the Shakespeare Jubilee for which he wrote a song referring to Shakespeare as the Warwickshire Bard which seems to have eventually morphed into The Bard of Avon. Here is a link to Garrick's original song, https://www.bartleby.com/333/77.htmlSir Laurence Olivier played the title role in Macbeth at the Old Vic Theatre in London in 1937.Books:Macbeth by William ShakespeareHolinshed's Chronicles of England, Scotland, and Ireland by Raphael HolinshedScotland: The Story of a Nation by Magnus MagnussonThe Reign of Elizabeth 1556-1603 by J.B. Episode 028: Girl from the North Country by Conor McPherson, music and lyrics by Bob Dylan Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Conor McPherson Welcome to The Play Podcast where we explore the greatest new and classic plays. Each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We'll discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Girl from the North Country is an extraordinary collaboration between the playwright Conor McPherson and the musician and song writer Bob Dylan. The result is a magical work where McPherson's portrait of families struggling to survive in Depression America is transfigured into an uplifting theatrical experience by the ravishing period arrangements of Dylan's songs. The play opened at the Old Vic Theatre in London in 2017 to a rapturous response and reviews, and was followed by runs in the West End and New York. This is a very special episode, first because I am privileged to talk with none other than the play's author Conor McPherson, and secondly because we have also been given kind permission to include several extracts from the original cast recording of the music from the first London production.

This week the Friends experienced two shows. One was an immersive play for one person for Portaleza by David Israel Reynoso/Optika Moderna, presented by La Jolla Playhouse. The prompt is: Send a message to a person in your life who has died. It's supernatural and kind of sci-fi. Then they review something more high-budget but also similarly technical: Romantics Anonymous, a new musical from Emma Rice, Christopher Dimond, and Michael Kooman. It was live-streamed straight from London's Old Vic Theatre and it was fully staged! The musical is about two socially awkward chocolate makers who fall in love. What do the Brits know that we don't about beating COVID and getting theater back? This week's guests are playwrights Luis Alfaro (Mojada, Oedipus El Rey) and Alexis Scheer (Our Dear Dead Drug Lord), in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month. The two playwrights talk about theater as alchemy and magic, and how to find your voice as a writer, even when that voice is weirder than everyone around you.
