As you may have heard, I have a new YouTube video coming this weekend about Howard Ashman, the lyricist behind The Little Mermaid among many other works. So for this week's episode, we're diving into the Sewers archives to revisit my 2016 interview with artist Terry Blas. Terry was inspired to become an artist after seeing The Little Mermaid — and it helped him figure out how he could navigate the world wearing a variety of hats: Nerdy, Hispanic, Mormon, gay, comic illustrator. In the near-decade since I first interviewed Terry, he's produced some fantastic comics, all of which you should check out — Lifetime Passes, Hotel Dare, Dead Weight, as well as biographical books about Cesar Chavez and Frida Kahlo just to name a few. I got a huge kick out of listening back to this conversation with Terry, knowing how much success was about to come his way. We'll have that conversation in a moment. If you're enjoying The Sewers of Paris, I hope you'll consider supporting the show on Patreon. Patrons get access to an exclusive Discord server, stickers and books in the mail, bonus videos, and more. You can join the Patreon at patreon.com/mattbaume.And you may also enjoy my other projects — like my YouTube videos for a queer look at movie and television history, my weekly livestreams on Twitch, my book Hi Honey, I'm Homo!, and my email newsletter. Brilliant comics writer and sometimes illustrator Terry Blas (You Say Latino, Lifetime Passes, Dead Weight, Reptil, Ariana Grande Vs. Sargeant Shade and the Clonebot Parade) joins me this week to talk about one of the weirder series launches in Marvel history.  In the 90's, writer Scott Lobdell and artist Chris Bachalo teamed up to create Generation X, the new New Mutants, which ran for four issues before being retooled as Generation Next for the Age of Apocalypse crossover. Does that even make any sense?  Come for the amazing artwork, stay to hear Terry call out the total misuse of Spanish in Skin's dialogue.  Here's a link to The Runs Comics Podcast on iTunes.  And here's the link to the show on Spotify. A regular cast member in the 90s title Generation X, moody Los Angeles teen Angelo fled the world of street crime to become one of the students at the Massachusetts Academy. The least-developed of the core Gen X team, he was unceremoniously killed off after that book's cancellation in the Chuck Austen run on Uncanny X-Men, and has only returned recently in the Age of Krakoa. The CEREBRO character file on Skin begins at 43:07. (Content Advisory: Skin's story includes body dysmorphia and racism.)

The Latino population makes about 18 percent of the United States with over 60 million Latino residents throughout the country. However, our screens and books paint a different picture. UCLA's 2021 Hollywood Diversity Report found that Latinos actors, directors, and scriptwriters make up just under 6% in Hollywood.  And print media is not seeing much a higher rate in representation either. University of Wisconsin-Madison's survey into children's literature found that Latino characters published were at 6% as well.  Today, experts in the arts discuss Latino representation in the media, their impact on stereotypes, and our perception of their roles in the U.S. What has the oldest, and largest, non-profit publisher of Hispanic literature in the United States seen throughout its run? And how are Latinos breaking barriers on and off the page? Some recommendations by our guests include: We Were Always Here: A Mexican American's Odyssey by Ricardo Chavira Secrets of the Casa Rosada by Alex Temblador  Wishbone by Anna Garcia Shaper La Borinqueña by Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez Editing by Design: The Classic Guide to Word-and-Picture Communication for Art Directors, Editors, Designers, and Students Book by Alex W. Our "How To" episode: how to design a book cover, how to correctly use the terms “Latino” and “Hispanic,” and how to revive your relationship with the arts. 1:06 - This week, members of the nonprofit Business for Culture and the Arts closed up shop. The group’s members worked for nearly 30 years to build bridges between the arts and business communities. But the board and members voted Thursday to dissolve operations, handing over some of its programs to the Regional Arts and Culture Council, RACC. We look at what a healthy business/arts relationship might look like. 9:52 - Portland comics artist and illustrator Terry Blas's dad was born in the U.S. and his mom in Mexico. He used to use the terms “Latino” and “Hispanic” interchangeably, but he doesn’t any more. This summer, he published a comic on Vox-dot-com about how he explains his heritage. And, as of this week, it’s been shared over 170-thousand times. 14:43 - The son of a professional treasure hunter, Nate Fasold hunts down famous guitars played by the like of Elliott Smith and Kurt Cobain from his shop on North Mississippi Avenue. 23:06 - Tonight is a fundraiser for the next stage in Portland MC Mic Crenshaw’s African Hip-Hop Caravan. It's a group made up of hip-hop collectives across the continent, including in Cape Town, Harare, Arusha and Nairobi, that aims to talk about the current state of African hip-hop. Crenshaw tells us about his last caravan trip. 33:17 - Sure, you shouldn't judge a book by a cover. But don't tell that to the designers behind some of the excellent and award-winning covers at the local publisher Tin House. They lay out their hands-on process. 39:43 - The Britt Music and Arts Festival in Jacksonville commissioned a new work about Crater Lake by composer Michael Gordon. Gordon co-founded Bang On A Can, a music festival and collective, and his compositions have been performed around the world by the likes of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the Kronos Quartet. Think Out Loud's Dave Miller talked with Gordon about the lakes serenity and violence.
