Perpendicular Futures: A Footlights CollegeIn this imaginative and thought-provoking episode, futurist and historian Dr. David Staley reads his latest blog article, “Perpendicular Futures: A Footlights College.” Known for his boundary-pushing scenarios for the future of higher education, Staley offers a bold and unexpected vision: What if colleges used performance arts—like theater and show choir—as a strategic enrollment tool, much like intercollegiate athletics?Drawing inspiration from high school show choir fervor and the storied Cambridge Footlights comedy troupe, Staley explores the idea of colleges investing heavily in performance opportunities not as academic programs, but as extracurricular recruitment strategies. This “perpendicular future” veers sharply from the typical trend lines of higher education planning and invites us to rethink what attracts students to campus in the first place.Whether you're a campus leader, a strategist, or simply someone intrigued by the unconventional, this episode will stretch your imagination about what's possible—and perhaps even probable—for the future of enrollment management.Perpendicular Change: What it means and why it matters for institutional planning.Theater and Show Choir as Enrollment Strategy: A new role for extracurriculars. The Passion Economy in Education: Students paying to perform—not for professional outcomes but for personal fulfillment.Footlights Reimagined: A nod to Cambridge's legendary troupe and a blueprint for creative placemaking.NIL Deals for Performers?: Imagining a future where artists, like athletes, earn incentives for their involvement.Disruption vs. Continuity: Why the future of college enrollment may not follow the path we expect. How embracing passion-driven participation could unlock new enrollment pathways. Why seemingly “fringe” extracurriculars might hold the key to student engagement and retention.A compelling case for reimagining institutional investments—from sports fields to stages.Dr. David Staley is a historian, futurist, and professor at The Ohio State University. He is widely known for his visionary writings and talks that challenge higher education to think differently about its future. In addition to his university teaching and consulting work, Dr. Staley regularly publishes articles on university design and innovation.

Tickets here. https://www.instagram.com/dee_allum/BBC New Comedy Awards finalist Dee Allum (Comedy Central Live) is set to bring her highly-anticipated debut stand-up comedy hour ‘Deadname' to the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe, performing at Pleasance Courtyard at 4.30pm throughout the festival. She's here! She's queer! Her parents are sort of used to it! In her debut stand-up show, Dee Allum, the greatest (and only) transgender comedian her small village has ever produced, is determined to move on with her life. Questions will be asked and answered like: What is a woman? Shut up! But you've kept your Watford FC season ticket? It's allowed! And at what point is it morally acceptable to return a puppy if they misgender you? The jury is out!But most importantly, Dee is on a mission to fully embrace who she used to be. From being a little theatre kid who was too chubby to play Oliver Twist, to a love-sick teen who learnt a new language to impress his crush, to discovering that she was transgender whilst at an all boys school. All to have to go through two puberties (frankly, two too many). Will Dee come to terms with her past selves, and become the perfect, flawless, 34DD woman that she always imagined herself to be? After all, didn't every boy dream of this from time to time?Dee Allum is an award-winning stand-up comedian and writer. Dee started her comedy career performing sketches with the Cambridge Footlights and wrote the prestigious Footlights Pantomime in 2018. Dee was part of the Pleasance Comedy Reserve 2022 line-up, has written and performed a 45-minute solo stand-up show, and started to become a regular fixture on the UK comedy circuit, as well as performing at cultural events such as Latitude Festival. In the last two years Dee has been nominated for Best Newcomer at the Chortle Awards, placed as runner up in the Leicester Square Theatre New Comedian of the Year award 2021, won the 2Northdown New Act Competition 2021 and was a finalist in the 2022 BBC New Comedy Award competition. This week, we gave ourselves 50 minutes and the task to catch master of mirth, Alex Horne. Comedian, frontman of six-piece band The Horne Section, and sensationally silly sod, Alex is best known for creating and co-hosting cult TV show, Taskmaster. Alongside Greg Davies, the only man in comedy big enough to call him ‘Little' Alex Horne, he tests the wiles, wit and wisdom of comedians through a series of tasks teeming with tomfoolery. We chat middle children, sorting potatoes from toads, Big Brother and berocca, reviewing an all-male strip show, The Cambridge Footlights, British humour overseas, car games, silly versus wacky, escapism, how he comes up with tasks, catching tears in an eggcup, and (of course) the glorious 'stupid waste of time' that is Taskmaster. Neil Mullarkey is an expert in applying improv techniques to sales and leadership situations. Recently he sat down with Phil Gerbyshak to talk about a few of his more salient insights into improv and how they can help you building your confidence, communication and clarity. While we didn't initially sit down to turn this into a podcast episode, the conversation was so rich it's worth sharing with you. Here are a few highlights of the conversation.Neil got his start in improv comedy when Mike Myers (yes - THAT Mike Meyers) joined his Cambridge Footlights troupe and taught them improv skills he learned at Second City in Toronto. This kicked off Neil's career in improv comedy.Improv comedy skills are useful in sales and business - skills like listening deeply, accepting what the other person says, and building on it. Improv is about creating story and characters that generate humor, not just telling jokes.Neil sees parallels between improv comedy and skills needed in business - conversations with colleagues, customers and stakeholders involve a lot of improvisation and adaptability. He wrote a book called "In the Moment" exploring these connections.Neil learned improv through hands-on practice and performing, not just studying it intellectually. He emphasizes the importance of learning by doing.Neil also discussed the balance between structured preparation and improvisation that's needed in sales, presentations and other business situations. Too much improv without structure wastes people's time, but overly scripted interactions don't allow for adaptability.Get a copy of Neil Mullarkey's latest book In the Moment: Build Your Confidence, Communication and Creativity at Work here and to know Neil more on his website. ★ Support this podcast ★ This is a public episode. What does it mean to be truly funny? We often associate the word ‘funny' with comedy and making people laugh. But it can also mean being witty, incisive ironic, playful, teasing, or delivering little moments of truth. On this episode, I'm speaking to comedy writer Paul Dornan, whose new company, True Funny, helps people discover what makes them funny — in the loosest sense of the word — and how they can maximise that in the way they present themselves. Not to make them artificially funny in an [inster funny joke here] type way, but naturally and authentically. In our discussion, we explored how Paul came to become a comedy writer, working with comedy legend Barry Humphries. He explains how comedy was an inherent part of his family and how that led him to his career. We explore what makes comedy work and why being funny is all about being human.Paul shares some of his thoughts about how being more authentic can make us more engaging and how the increasing power of cognitive technology means we all need to be more human. To find out more about Paul and his company, True Funny: https://truefunny.co.uk/During our discussion, Paul referred to a number of comedians and comedy shows:Barry Humphries and Barry's comedy alter ego Dame Edna Everage: https://www.dame-edna.com/A clip that Paul referred to where Dame Edna speaks to former UK Prime Minister Ted Heath. Neil Mullarkey is a comedian, author, co-founder of The Comedy Store Players with Mike Myers (Wayne's World, Austin Powers & Shrek) a regular on Whose Line Is It Anyway and member of the iconic Cambridge Footlights. This episode will make you smile and laugh out loud, something we could all do with more of. Neil shares some incredible stories with me from the days of the Cambridge Footlights, home to so many famous comedians such as Monty Python, The Goodies, John Cleese, Fry & Laurie and many more. He explains how he met Mike Myers by accident and asked him to paint the set and sell tickets for him which led to them becoming a double act which in turn become a way of life full of laughter, improvisation and stand up comedy. The power and applicability of improvisation in a business context is clear and Neil now helps leaders focus on their ability to listen, co-create, build psychological safety and teamwork and step into uncertainty with a feeling of hope. You become a good improvisor when you let go of the fear of being seen as mad, bad or wrong. Don't try to do things by yourself 'bring a brick and build a cathedral.'Warwick University did a study that happy workers are 12% more productive, humour will help any leader and humour utterances tend to see people succeed more than those who don't.Neil outlines his acronym L.A.G.E.R. as a simple process that any of us can follow. Neil also explains how he met and worked with Eddie Izzard and outlines how different styles and rhythms of delivery connect with audiences. The pandemic also forced Neil to focus on his skills in a virtual and remote format. His advice for leaders is to keep communicating with people using all the various mediums but ensuring you are 'checking in' not 'checking up'. and use the 20:20:20 rule. The office remains a place to focus people on 'connection, celebration and education.' Kentucky Fried Duck will help you remember to focus on your what you want your audience to KNOW, FEEL and DO to avoid the spiral of disaster and enter the bubble of opportunity. This episode is packed full of fun, laughter and wisdom from years of entertaining people all over the world as some of the greatest comedians of our time. We also touch on storytelling for leaders. Keep it simple as Neil outlines three simple categories of. how we got here, where we are now and where are we going next. Neil has also promised me that his alter ego L Vaughan Spencer will come onto the show in the New Year.......what could possibly go wrong!www.neilmullarkey.comNeil's new book 'In The Moment' is available on Amazon.

Robert Webb first reached a wide audience as the co-star of Channel 4's longest running sitcom, the BAFTA-award winning Peep Show. With his long-standing comedy partner David Mitchell, he also created That Mitchell and Webb Sound for BBC Radio 4, which transferred to TV as That Mitchell and Webb Look, which also won a BAFTA. Robert was born in Lincolnshire and first became hooked on comedy when his impressions of teachers made his school friends laugh. After realising that many of his comedy heroes had studied at Cambridge University, and were members of the Cambridge Footlights, he decided to follow in their footsteps. He took his A levels twice in order to win a place to study English there, and went on to become vice-president of the Footlights - where he met David Mitchell. Their comedy partnership has lasted for 30 years, starting out with shows for the Edinburgh fringe and writing for other performers, before enjoying TV success as a double act. Robert has also written a best-selling memoir, How Not to be a Boy, in which he reflects on masculinity, and a novel. In 2019, a routine medical examination revealed that he had a congenital heart defect. He underwent heart surgery and is now fully recovered. Robert lives in London with his wife and two daughters. "What's your mother tongue?" A simple question.. Cansu Karabiyik, our guest this week, replied, "That's a complicated question. I don't really have a national identity anymore."As a Kurdish/Turkish Danish citizen who studied abroad first in America then at Cambridge University in the UK, Cansu is an example that national identity and our relationship with a language may not always be straightforward.Cansu in this episode talks to your host Kuan-wen about how she had to adjust her comedy performing style since moving across the pond from London to New York. Bear-like in stature and authority and nimble of wit, Pierre Novellie is a fantastic comedian and writer who wrings every punchline out of his routines. We talk about how his origins in Johannesburg and the Isle Of Man make him an “outsider expert” on the English, and discover why he deliberately obscured his vice-presidency of Cambridge Footlights. We talk about his early assumptions that he was somehow low status on stage; explore his body of work, and attitudes to risk and certainty; and discover the perils of “getting your bum out too early”…A belting 40 mins of extras available exclusively to the Insiders Club features Pierre and Stu sharing their tips on how to survive corporate gigs, with advice on material selection, mindset and how to think about the money in the right way. #349 timkey - Richard's son is a chip off the old block, though Richard is upset that Lego has introduced things that are chips instead of blocks. His guest is University fraud Tim Key.The pair compare garments before Richard suggests a radical rebrand for the actor/comedian, teases out the story of how Tim got into the Cambridge Footlights, and how Tim's poet character developed. How to BUILD a new version of masculinity that makes sense in the modern world. My guest this week is Spencer Brown, amongst lots of things he's the author of "The Rebuilding of Tom Cooper" and "The Lockdown Diary of Tom Cooper". In this episode we explore how exactly to build a new type of masculinity plus building a life around our talents. Spencer Brown started life as a stand-up. He cut his teeth doing sketches with the Cambridge Footlights, and since then he’s performed everywhere from London’s Comedy Store to LA’s Comedy and Magic Club and UCB Theatre, as well as appearing internationally as far afield as Slovenia and Mumbai. Stand Up then led to presenting and acting. Spencer also writes, both screenplays and novels. His debut novel The Rebuilding of Tom Cooper (‘a joy-seeking missile’ Richard Ayoade, ‘Philip Roth meets Cold Feet’ Helen Lederer) was out last year and became a Kindle top 5 bestseller, and the stand-alone sequel The Lockdown Diary of Tom Cooper (‘so very funny’ Jenny Colgan) came out this November to a fantastic reception. To pay the bills, Spencer also works as a freelance creative director for advertising firms and voice over artist.

This week’s Private Passions is pretty crowded, with Kirsty Wark, Fiona Bruce, Emily Thornberry and Theresa May all putting in appearances - in the person of Jan Ravens, from the award-winning Radio 4 show Dead Ringers. Jan’s career has been a series of firsts – she was, in 1979, the first female president of the Cambridge Footlights, and the show she directed in Edinburgh went on to win the first ever Perrier Award. She was one of the first women to appear with Jasper Carrott and on Spitting Image, and last year she made her solo Edinburgh debut with her show Difficult Woman. Jan tells Michael how her difficult childhood was transformed by writing and performing at Cambridge, about the battles she’s fought to have women equally represented on comedy shows and discusses the frequently negative perception of women in positions of power. And she demonstrates just how she got inside the voice of Theresa May. Jan’s passion isn’t just for female speaking voices but for singing voices too, and she’s chosen to hear four women singers: Maria Callas, Kathleen Ferrier, Jessye Norman and Barbara Cook. Christopher Luscombe, who's directed in London's West End, at Shakespeare's Globe, and for the ‘other RSC' (the Royal Shakespeare Company), now directs Nell Gwynn, a charming new comedy with music about the famous (or infamous) 17th Century actress now having its world premiere at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre. Also an alumnus of the Cambridge Footlights, Chris discusses Nell the play, Nell the actress, and Nell the production. Featuring a wonderful tribute to Chicago actors, the value of being authentically English, the absolute treat of continuing to work on a play over several years, the advantage of embracing contradictions, the great thing about not being afraid of comedy, and the importance of starting from scratch every time. Kirsty Young's guest on Desert Island Discs this week is the actress Miriam Margolyes. Her rich career has seen her work with directors such as Martin Scorsese and Baz Luhrmann and she's won awards and acclaim for her film work, her theatre performances and her book readings. She made the leap from the Cambridge Footlights to become one of our most successful and popular character actresses. Yet, despite having one of the most sought after voices in the business, she says she hasn't had the career that she aspired to. She yearned to be taken more seriously and given meatier roles but, she jokes, Joan Plowright always stood in her way. Sue Lawley's castaway this week is John Bird. As a student, he changed the face of the Cambridge Footlights review by rejecting jokes on bed-makers and punting and writing a political review instead. In the early 1960s he helped found The Establishment Club with Peter Cook. Writing sketches with John Fortune, they found they were unable to find suitable actors to perform their work, and so took to the stage themselves.
