Notes: A helpful therapist once said to me that feelings can help me understand how I perceive the world – I feel sadness when I experience loss; fear lets me know that I'm seeing a threat, anger flags where I see unfairness or injustice. What I love about this song is the way it lets the feelings roll into a grounding of power -- one's own voice and ability to stand in love -- and not be silent. Lisa wrote it in the aftermath of the violent white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia in August of 2017. I invite us to recognize where we see wrong, and let this song help find our powerful voices in response, aligned in heart and love. Songwriter Info: Lisa G. On the show this time, it's the startling sound of future-soul wayfinder Spellling. “Spellling,” with 3 “L's” is the name of Oakland, California artist Tia Cabral's ambitious solo project. If you were lost in a mythical forest, or a futuristic city, or even just stumbling aimlessly somewhere along Telegraph or San Pablo Avenue in Oakland - It's not that Spellling would know the way home (though she might.) It's that, without a doubt, she would create a pathway to somewhere, and the journey to that new place would be delightful. It would be enchanting. Her latest album is called “The Turning Wheel,” embracing - both in title and in spirit - the karmic circle of life. The music combines her flexible airy voice with mischievous harmony, synths with acoustic orchestra, and natural or supernatural topics. It's available on Sacred Bones Records. Recorded 10/29/2022. Bay Area-based experimental artist Chrystia Cabral started making Gothic-inspired music as SPELLLING, in 2017. The dabbling and experimenting of her first two albums were instructive but have now given way to something more intentional. The bewitching vocals and haunting soundscapes of Pantheon of Me and Mazy Fly are still present but her art has evolved and expanded sonically and thematically on her lush, third record The Turning Wheel. She pulls from Science Fiction authors, fairy tales, Disney and Afro Futurism—building worlds intended for fans of her music to inhabit and seek refuge. Many thanks for making this possible — Tia for taking us through the looking glass and into space. Thank you Sacred Bones Records for use of music. And to Sam McAllister at Pitch Perfect PR.Songs Featured: "Always," "Walk Up To Your House," 'Real Fun" "Little Deer," "Queen of Wands," "The Future," "Emperor with an Egg," "Boys at Schoo," "Revolution" and "The Turning Wheel."To share your thoughts on this episode, email: celine.teoblockey@undertheradarmag.com See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
This week we review "The Turning Wheel" from Spelling, and Japanese Breakfast's "Jubilee."
It's the Season Finale of The Witch Wave! Tia Cabral is a Bay Area-based musician who performs under the magical moniker SPELLLING. She released her first moodily mystical full length Pantheon of Me in September 2017 to rave reviews including being Bandcamp's #4 record of that year, and she followed it up in 2018 with her critically acclaimed darkly sparkling album Mazy Fly released on Sacred Bones Records. On both of these albums, she draws from dream imagery and esoteric symbolism to tap into the ethereal realm of emotion and spirit all spiraling from a synthy sonic palette. Her brand new album, The Turning Wheel, marks a symphonic expansion for SPELLLING, with lush orchestral production that utilizes 31 musicians, and celebrates macrocosmic themes of “human unity, the future, divine love and the enigmatic ups and downs of being a part of this carnival called life. ” It feels very much like a Magnum Opus, and heralds a brilliant and bewitching music-maker at the height of her powers. The visuals for the album are maximalist as well with SPELLLING and co. donning elaborate costumes and metamorphic makeup. SPELLLING has toured with Boy Harsher and Amen Dunes and her live performances are regarded as revelations of spell and spectacle. On this episode, Tia discusses her magical music theories, divine influences from Kate Bush to Sun Ra, and how occult practices like tarot and alchemy helped conjure her new album, The Turning Wheel. Pam also talks about the sacred symbolism of the wheel, and answers a listener question about meeting the felines of her dreams. Our sponsors for this episode are Moon Dust Press, Witch Baby Soap, Motherland, BetterHelp, Mithras Candle, and Maude's Paperwing Gallery
SPELLLING - "Boys at School" from the 2021 album The Turning Wheel on Sacred Bones. Bay Area-based artist Chrystia Cabral, who records as SPELLLING, returns with her third full-length, The Turning Wheel, out June 25th via Sacred Bones. In a press release, she details that the album has “themes of human unity, the future, divine love, and the enigmatic ups and downs of being a part of this carnival called life.” Today's Song of the Day is a dramatic seven-minute-long piano-led ballad, with Cabral reflecting on the early stages of her life. She explains that the track “steps back into my younger self, my teenage self to voice my angst, desires and disillusionments. I knew when I created the main motif on the piano that it was striking something really raw and both delicate and fierce. The notes just immediately transported me to the era of my youth, of this time when you are really beginning to confront the mirror of yourself to the outside world.” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2000, he went on to turntables and, after a few months of training, he started playing at minor parties. Organizing his own events was the next logical step - together with a few other enthusiasts, he would liven up the then nearly non-existent West-Bohemian dance scene. It didn’t take long before bookings for major events from all corners of Bohemia started coming in. In the year 2003; he participated in the DJs LIVC/BASSLINE CUP - western region competition where he was placed second. A year later, he started to experiment with music production, gradually fitting up his home studio. In the year 2007, he founded the successful Skillz Brothaz project together with a friend and participated in the birth of music info server Undergroundcity.cz. In 2008, he put aside his turntables and, thanks to a cooperation with a leading Czech DJ shop he co-founded, started using the state-of-the-art digital technologies, notably Ableton+Traktor+MIDI controllers, which allow him to sample in his mixes a great deal of his own production in any form. Nevertheless, he very often plays from CD players as well and this for a simple reason - he enjoys mixing songs manually. In the year 2011, he launched his new show called Tomas Drex PODCAST which lets you listen to new music releases, information and mix from special guest - every new month. At the beginning of the year 2013 he founded tech-house label Soul Fly Music Records with his friends, which already has many well-known artists in the catalogue. Nowadays, he’s had behind him several tracks and remixes released on labels such as: Yin Yang, Yaiza, Bedroom Muzik, Patent Skillz, Decide Music Concept, Italo Business, Naked Lunch, Egothermia, Plastik Galaxy, Turning Wheel, Flat Belly... and others. Tomas Drex is currently working on new tracks and planning on compiling his debut album soon. You can expect combination of tech-house and techno music.
