The poem quoted in the first half of the podcast is by Rainer Maria Rilke it is in Rainer Maria Rilke, Rilke's Book of Hours: Love Poems to God - the opening lines are 'You are not surprised at the force of the storm'. Here is list of Adrian's Lessons Learned with the quotes from his poems. Lessons Learnt from my Breakdown Breathing Advice to Myself in Anxiety ‘Breathe slowly into this, Don't run; stay, You are moored more firmly than you know. There is a constancy in you not your own.' Talking Anxiety Diary ‘My Jungian therapist said, right at the start, that this breakdown was the best thing that had ever happened to me. I thought it was she that was insane, and I wanted to stop right there and then. I think now, she may have been right.' Walking Rivelin Valley Vespers ‘By walking this same path, with a slow and monastic doggedness, I behold tonight's road by low sunlight, all made meaningful and prelude by the merle blue devotion in my collie's gaze.' Writing Writing as Therapy ‘Now here I am, sitting in a round of delivery, speaking lines gleaned from a dark and no-mooned night, when only my pen knew its way.' Seeing Afterword to a Traipsing ‘Laura Page has walked me around the streets camera slung, capturing Sheffield with f-stops and the right shutter-speeds for a city caught in the headlights of forces it is yet to grasp.' Sharing Writing as Therapy ‘In the morning session I had spared no detail of my breakdown, all the colly-wobbled, jelly-bellied quaking of it all.' Volunteering We are Bodies ‘We have turned sixty Volunteering, cooking the cafe Good soup, vegan and lentil Aching knees, aching nerves Bruised by the bruising lives we are Bludgeoned into, but brightened By the fellowship of fellow sufferers' Trusting A Night Sea Journey ‘This is what the mythologists call a night sea journey. I am on a gurney bark sailing through the dark into an uncertain dawn.' Loving Birdsong on Long Line ‘A sleek throat sounds against the early dusk a last verse to these long lines of walking, and my heart welcomes this reckless chorus, hopefulness beyond my walk's ending.' Thanks to Andy Selman for his wonderful accompaniment to the Birdsong poem - the whole Album Made I Sheffield can be heard on Spotify here Made In Sheffield - Scott & Selman You can buy Adrian's books here www.adriangrscott.com If you want to Adrian and Andy perform with the band Dusk Over Rivelin on August 15th in Sheffield click here for tickets. https://www.wegottickets.com/event/623931 Come along it will be a great evening. "The keenest sorrow is to recognize ourselves as the sole cause of all our adversities." – Sophocles, Oedipus Rex Change of format! This week, host Cyrus Palizban invites a single guest, Nico Sarian, to dive into the quote of the week and meander from there! Starting with the quote from Sophocles' “Oedipus Rex”, we take a deep dive into the nature of Greek tragedy, the significance of individual actions and fate, and the impact of historical and cultural context on literary interpretation. The discussion ranges from the origins of the dithyramb of the ancient cult of Dionysus to the many names of Apollo in the further-flung Hellenic reaches to the intricate subtexts of theology, the creative reconstruction of historical narratives, and the philosophical underpinning of tragedy as a genre. Additionally, Nico shares some of his personal theses on the nature of good and evil, and how their distinction is often hidden from us. machine_logic on the Rooftop Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 3/23/24 machine_logic, curator of deep, hypnotic, progressive dance grooves with a delicate, ethereal chemistry. Always digging deep, his emotive selections tell a story. With every set, he shares more and more tiny pieces of himself. Having grown up with an eclectic collection, it took him a great while to come around to the sound he's carved out for himself. He cut his teeth in 1999 at KGRG-Auburn, at Green River Community College, where was music director. He hosted their industrial radio program, KGRG's Propaganda Department. From there came a spattering of club gigs that turned into some local residencies, more club gigs, and then his selection became more and more eclectic, yet more refined. Traipsing through a variety of styles, he finally landed with a massive collection of the emotive and uplifting side of techno, house and breaks (quite the 180 from his years in the industrial scene, for sure). While the music he plays is happy, soulful and playful, he is never afraid to show those dark roots, especially when the dancefloor heats up. He has played all over the Pacific Northwest and up and down the West coast. He loves playing nightclubs, patios, outdoors, and festivals having shared the stage with a wide swath of underground artists. He is always looking to express himself musically. For him, it's all about the feeling, the hypnotic groove, taking those present on a profound and sentimental journey. Welcome to The Art of Medicine, the program that explores the arts, business, and clinical aspects of the practice of medicine! I'm your host, Dr. Andrew Wilner. Today, I spoke with Joe Sherman, MD, pediatrician and physician coach. Many physician coaches are out there, and I've interviewed several for this program. But when I learned about Dr. Sherman's extensive medical mission work in Uganda and Bolivia, I had to speak with him. My own medical mission work in the Philippines started over ten years ago. Traipsing through the jungle to remote locations to treat indigenous people who had never seen a Western physician before was an amazing experience. It opened my eyes to a larger world beyond traditional private practice and academic medicine. There's no doubt that the experience molded me into a better physician. It also raised questions about how best to deliver care globally to underserved areas. Dr. Sherman explained that the benefits of a medical mission go both ways. While volunteer physicians and other healthcare workers provide free care, they receive intangible but priceless returns that stay with them for the rest of their lives. Dr. Sherman's broad experience and thoughtful analysis come through during this interview. When I asked Dr. Sherman whether a physician considering a medical mission should try it, his answer was an unequivocal “Yes!”Please watch this 30-minute interview with Dr. Joe Sherman to learn why.To learn more about medical missions or to inquire about Dr. Sherman's physician coaching, please check out his website: www.joeshermanmd.comYou can contact Dr. Sherman here: linkedin.com/in/joeshermanmd email: joe@joeshermanmd.comFeedback is welcome! We imagined this would be our final episode on TSR, however, excitement is difficult to contain when there's so much happening in these chapters. Only covering chapters 55 and 56 this week in order to get into all the nitty gritty details and fun theories. In these chapters; Nyneave, Elayne, and Egeanin got into the Panarch's palace, but now it's time for the trio plus one to find their way out. And Perrin is preparing his mind and the village for what will certainly be the worst attack, if not the last, on Emond's Field. We have opened our weekly recordings to live text with our Patrons when we record. This is for all our patrons, starting at $1 a month, and we just uploaded new merch perks as well. Curious about something? Google it. Look at it. Ask a question. But is curiosity simply information seeking? According to this exhilarating, genre-bending book, what's left out of the conventional understanding of curiosity are the wandering tracks, the weaving concepts, the knitting of ideas, and the thatching of knowledge systems--the networks, the relations between ideas and between people. Curiosity, say Perry Zurn and Dani Bassett, is a practice of connection: it connects ideas into networks of knowledge, and it connects knowers themselves, both to the knowledge they seek and to each other. Zurn and Bassett--identical twins who write that their book "represents the thought of one mind and two bodies"--harness their respective expertise in the humanities and the sciences to get irrepressibly curious about curiosity. Traipsing across literatures of antiquity and medieval science, Victorian poetry and nature essays, as well as work by writers from a variety of marginalized communities, they trace a multitudinous curiosity. They identify three styles of curiosity--the busybody, who collects stories, creating loose knowledge networks; the hunter, who hunts down secrets or discoveries, creating tight networks; and the dancer, who takes leaps of creative imagination, creating loopy ones. Investigating what happens in a curious brain, they offer an accessible account of the network neuroscience of curiosity. And they sketch out a new kind of curiosity-centric and inclusive education that embraces everyone's curiosity. Curious Minds: The Power of Connection (MIT Press, 2022) performs the very curiosity that it describes, inviting readers to participate--to be curious with the book and not simply about it. And they sketch out a new kind of curiosity-centric and inclusive education that embraces everyone's curiosity. Curious Minds: The Power of Connection (MIT Press, 2022) performs the very curiosity that it describes, inviting readers to participate--to be curious with the book and not simply about it. In 1784, Thomas Jefferson was a broken man. Reeling from the loss of his wife and humiliated from a political scandal during the Revolutionary war, he needed to remake himself. And to do that, he traveled. Traipsing through Europe, Jefferson saw and learned as much as he could, ultimately bringing his knowledge home to a young America. He wrote a travelogue called “Hints to Americans Traveling in Europe.”Jefferson documented his trip in order to educate the infant nation on cutting-edge techniques in agriculture and architecture. He included sketches of buildings with Roman domes and columns, which he thought should be incorporated into America's buildings to celebrate one of the ancient world's greatest democracies. But he also indulged in European luxury and spent a gilded carriage's worth on wine, ivory-handled knives, and porcelain statuettes, and (most odd) an organ for teaching songs to birds. More than two hundred years later, Derek Baxter, a devotee of American history, decided to follow in his footsteps and see what he could learn from the Founding Father. Baxter is today's guest and author of “In Pursuit of Jefferson: Traveling Through Europe With the Most Perplexing Founding Father.” He stumbled on Jefferson's travelogue and used it as a roadmap, embarking on a new journey, following Jefferson to the same French wineries and rivers, even eating period-accurate food at Monticello. The goal was to figure out how to make sense of Jefferson and the multitude of contradictions in his life, the most debated being that he was a slaveholder who also wrote a world-historical testament to freedom. This is an unflinching look at a founding father, and a moving personal journey. We explore how we can be better moving forward only by first looking back.

With four weeks left in July, a theme month was in order. Jeff and Kelly start of Time Travel Month with the 1989 classic "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure".
I was in the fourth grade when I first developed a passion for piney woods. I was a pre-schooler when the woods first called out though. So by the time 4th grade arrived I'd spent half my life fascinated by and in love with --- trees. Woods. Woods. A forest is woods, but not all woods are forests. I think woods are thought of as smaller than forests. Small groups of trees, but how small is small? It depends. On how big you are. When you're a little kid one undeveloped lot in the neighborhood thick with trees will suffice. When you're an adult, something larger is required. I love woods. There's something special about them. Being in them. For extended time. Day after day is even better. Because you get to know them better. Traipsing through woods every now and again is great, but not nearly as great as getting to know them. Well. There is something therapeutic about woods, especially piney woods. A feeling. A sensation. There's a psychology to them for me. My best description? They're a big exhale for me. They help. I embrace it. I'm not imposing on them. They welcome me. Any time. I don't disturb their schedule. I don't ask them to do anything. Just be there. Just be what they naturally are. Let me stay. Stick around a bit. Then come back again tomorrow and notice more. Spot any changes. Be friendly. Unlike most people, I trust piney woods. They don't pretend to be something they're not. They don't judge me or anybody else. They don't lie. Cheat. Or steal. They're just there existing for the pleasure of the wildlife and not-so-wildlife. As a 4th grader, I may have added to the population of wildlife, what with all the fort building, pine straw stacking, path clearing, and whatever else we did as kids. But that's all behind me. And even then I had moments of not-so-wildlife where we'd just sit on the pine needles and talk about what might come next. "What'da ya'll wanna do now?" somebody would ask. That might spark a 30-minute discussion of various ideas that somebody might invariably shoot down until we figured out something we could all agree on. I hope kids today have those conversations, but something tells me they don't. A shallow investigation into social media platforms like TikTok and Snapchat indicates that our attention span is down to something like 8 seconds. Eight seconds? Isn't that the time bull riders need to complete a successful ride? We were often bored as kids. It didn't always result in trouble either. It gave us time to talk, interact, argue, debate, and work things out. Eight seconds? Man alive, we spent hours collectively trying to figure out what we might do that would bring us our next adventure. But this isn't about "good 'ol days" syndrome. Honestly, it's not. I'm just trying to paint context for you of how we worked to close the distance from hope to help. The gap between whatever was in our heads and what we could make real. Like the unmotorized go-carts, we'd make out of spare parts laying around in all our carports and garages. Or the homemade skateboards out of those old metal-wheeled rollerskates. Or the countless forts and treehouses we'd cobble together out of anything we could find. And how we'd decorate the insides without any help or influence from the likes of Chip and Joanna. By the way, does anybody else wonder why Chip thinks his long hair looks good? I've got a neighbor who is older than I am and he decided a ponytail would look good. No, it doesn't. You look ridiculous. So does Chip. Somebody help these people understand how unflattering it is to grow older and attempt to hang onto youthful fashion or hairdos. #JustSaying Hope should dominate the life of every kid. I know the world is cruel and there are dangers galore, but every child deserves to be filled with hope about the future. Hope should dominate the life of every adult. It's harder for us because we've experienced sorrow, sadness, and struggle.
machine_logic on the "7B's Brunch" Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions at the Queen Anne Beer Hall 5/22/21 About machine_logic - machine_logic, curator of deep, hypnotic, progressive dance grooves with a delicate, ethereal chemistry. The DJ Sessions and the Queen Anne Beer Hall have teamed up to bring you one of the best brunches in the city better known as the 7B's Brunch… BENEDICTS, BRATS, BURGERS, BEERS, BLOODY'S, BACON, AND BEATS BRUNCH. Every Saturday starting at Noon you can come to the “Hall” and start you day with and awesome assortment of menu items that will make your mouth water while at the same time be part of one of the world's most popular live streaming DJs series. The best thing is that you and your friends can still enjoy a great brunch without having to talk over loud music because we use “Silent Concert/Disco” headsets so it doesn't disturb your amazing day or add an extra “thump” to your existing hangover. Free headsets are available (and limited in supply) with a minimum food/beverage tab and you better get here early to get a table and save room for your friends. Additional headsets can be rented and the price varies depending on your food beverage purchase. Each headset is sanitized and only used one time per event. Welcome one and all. Well not all. All except you. You know who I'm talking about. Anywho in this episode, which is the 19th, we're going to talk about Shadows: Awakening and Into the Badlands. Title art by Devious.Pixel. Check him out on his Instagram. Get Devious.Pixelized and share it on our podcast page on FB. Sweet Jams: "Main Theme" "In Fighter's Guild" "Souls of Devourer" "Meeting Nomads" "In Taymurian Wilds" All these tracks and few more can be found on the Shadows: Awakening OST. Not terribly confident in the track titles I found since there is no Fighter's Guild in the game but oh well. "Intro - Warrior Blade" By Mike Shinoda "Outro" Both of these come from the Into the Badlands OST. Podcast edited by me(Drew). I think it sounds ok. We did use a new mic I'm not so sure about yet. But it wasn't until a football injury sidelined a frustrated young Darin that his curiosity in the relationship between food and health begin to truly take root. A curiosity that began with a simple question:There must be a better way to heal myself. The intrigue that evolved from that initial query has been an ongoing, twenty-year plus quest for better, more natural pathways to ultimate wellness. A journey that led Darin to study exotic, indigenous herbs and superfoods from every imaginable port of call across the developing world. Communing with thousands of rural farmers, growers and manufacturers in remote communities across Peru, Bhutan, the Amazon, the Himalayas, the South Pacific, Latin America and Asia, Darin now shepherds high-quality, fair-trade superfoods and herbal commodities to market through his company, Darin’s Naturals.Perhaps best known for his work with fitness company Beachbody, Darin was instrumental in the development and ongoing formulation of the wildly successful whole-food supplement, Shakeology. He chronicles his experience in his new book Superlife: The 5 Forces That Will Make You healthy, Fit & Eternally Awesome – as well as on his website Superlife.com – where he demystifies health, fitness, nutrition, and longevity into simple daily actions designed to promote life-long wellness. What is most intriguing to me isn’t just that Darin is a respected authority on the healing potential of food. And it isn't just that he has been instrumental in introducing these so called superfoods to western consumers. What is most interesting is his commitment to do it right. A deep rooted responsibility to fairly, sustainably and transparently support the grower communities and their long-term interests.Ripped and Malibu sun kissed, Darin more than resembles a plant-based version of his friend and workout buddy Laird Hamilton. So it would be natural to presume he has always been a model of health and fitness. But that presumption would be misplaced. Because for Darin it wasn't always this way. Like all of us, Darin has faced many challenging and relatable life obstacles on his path to living what I think is fair to characterize as his best, most authentic superlife. At the same time, the term superfoods is prone to cavalier overuse. Are these foods truly “super” or is it all just exaggerated marketing hype? This is a conversation that explores that issue and so much more.I sincerely hope you enjoy this exchange with a man who exudes positive energy, passion and enthusiasm for health. I look forward to your thoughts in the comments section below.Peace + Plants,Listen & Subscribe on See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Something Weird This Way Comes... is a movie podcast about campy and exploitation films from the 30's - 70's. Join our intrepid hosts Roo and Moe as they discuss the African Safari madness of... Bowanga Bowanga Brace yourselves, folks, you ain't never seen a jungle film like this…. Traipsing through 'Africa,' Kirby and his pal Count Sparafucile (yes, that's his name) marvel at all the stock footage they encounter (including a sexy jungle girl and her pet gorilla who quickly disappear from the plot before things turn Forbidden Adventure on us) when Great White Hunter Trent stumbles out of the brush, half-dead and babbling: 'Ulama, Ulama… White Sirens of Africa!' What's that? A tribe of white women in Africa? You betcha. And not just any ol' 'white sirens' but Fifties Glamour Girls in skimpy jungle bikinis! Trent tells them how and where he encountered a few of the girls and pretty soon all three are soon heading for the rocky plateau where the Ulama roam. Getting there involves the use of more mis-matching stock footage. So much stock footage, in fact, that it often feels like you're watching twelve jungle films at once. There are the obligatory stock shots of topless African natives as well as shots of any and every animal the editor could toss into the mix: leopards, hippos, baboons, deer, owls, and even a squirrel. (What, no polar bears?) Once atop the Ulama plateau, our three he-men are promptly captured by the tribe whereupon the film turns into an Amazonian fantasy gone mad. All the women are not only white and in their twenties, but they all look like strippers in animal skins: 'What a charming bunch of chicks!' After a hilariously un-choreographed Ulama dance number, the Queen (DANA WILSON, who has lots of teeth and talks as if all of them are loose) welcomes them: 'Ulama like strong white man! Queen want strong white man!' In fact, because the Queen can't decide which strong white man she wants, she decides to force the men to fight and take the victor as her hubby: 'Queen make strong man husband! Fire God take weak man! Queen take strong man!' But no, no, the men don't fight themselves, they fight other women. Sort of like a Ulama wrestling match. Kirby goes first, battles a nice tall blonde, and is beaten up like a little boy. The comic-relief Count has previously been deemed too inferior for a mate, which leaves Trent, who wins both his bout and the Queen's hand in marriage: 'You husband for Queen!' Kirby and the Count are quickly slated for sacrifice to the 'Fire God' (some kind of smoke-belching crevice at the base of a cliff) which greatly upsets the other Ulama: 'She no burn nice men! We take nice men! We get husbands too!' How will this all be settled? You guessed it: by a wild tribal catfight…. Wow. Jungle cheesecake has always been a pop-culture icon, but seldom has it been shown upon the screen as deliriously as it is here which turns the Battle of the Sexes into pure cheesecake madness. Make no mistake about it: Bowanga Bowanga (also known as Ulama White Sirens of Africa, Unashamed Women, and Wild Women) is nothing less than the Single Greatest Jungle Movie Ever Made.Digitally remastered from a mint Ulama-lovin' print. -- Mr. Daddy-O Come listen to Moe and Roo discuss how much we absolutely LOVE it!
