It's not easy being a songwriter. It's also not easy being a PhD student. I don't know how Uwade is able to do both simultaneously. Uwade is in the first year of her PhD program in Classics at Stanford University, and in this episode we explore how these two lives intersect. We also go deep into her songwriting process, which must involve a .38mm Muji black ink pen. It has to be black ink because "blue is too whimsical. Black ink is me telling myself, You have get real. No more fun and games. Black ink is a declaration, whereas blue ink is for play," Uwade told me.If you're a Fleet Foxes fan, you've heard Uwade's voice on their album Shore and may have seen her open for the band. Her new and insanely good album Florilegium is out now on Thirty Tigers.
Hello friends! Former boxer turned singer-songwriter, Paul Thorn is my guest for episode 1470! His latest album, the reflective, Life Is Just A Vapor is available now wherever you stream and on vinyl through Thirty Tigers. Paul is currently on tour and will be in Texas in April doing several shows including Sunday, 4/13 at Haute Spot here in Austin. Go to paulthorn.com for tour dates, music, and more. We have a great conversation about growing up with a Pentecostal minister father, becoming a professional boxer and fighting Roberto Duran on TV, writing songs with Carole King at Miles Copeland's castle in France, opening for Sting, his minimalist songwriting style, having Joe Bonanmassa guest on Life Is Just A Vapor and much more. I had a great time getting to know Paul. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Follow us on X, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. If you feel so inclined. John Moreland is a celebrated singer songwriter who has steadily released 10+ records, mostly independently (through Thirty Tigers) and one with 4AD, receiving accolades from the New York Times, Fresh Air, and Pitchfork, and has tour with the likes of Dawes, Patty Griffin, and Jason Isbell. We talk with John about cutting back on his 'team' so he could return to being more hands-on, how having lots of middle men involved separated him from both his audience and his creativity, going back to a flip phone, jealousy as positive motivation, following your own timeline, and a whole lot more.Get more access and support this show by subscribing to our Patreon, right here.Links:John MorelandJames BlakeEp 7 - BJ Barham (American Aquarium)Ep 10 - Joe PugColter WallTyler ChildersBenjamin TodEp 64 - Rhett MillerChris StaplesZadie Smith on Ezra KleinJonah HillGillian WelchIris DementLucinda WilliamsClick here to watch this conversation on YouTube.Social Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. On a June afternoon, it seems like business as usual at the independent music company Thirty Tigers, as staffers file into its Nashville conference room, and colleagues dial in remotely. But this isn't just any marketing meeting. They're joined by Holly G, the founder of the Black Opry platform and its new record label, and the first artist she signed, Jett Holden. Everyone's here to strategize about a one-of-a-kind album launch.

Lori McKenna is Grammy-winning singer songwriter who has released 12+ records on Warner, Signature Sounds, Thirty Tigers, and written countless songs that have been number 1 hits for the likes of Faith Hill, Tim McGraw, Taylor Swift, Little Big Town, Lady Gaga, Maren Morris, Thomas Rhett, The Highwomen, and Mandy Moore, to name a few. All of this widespread acclaim started later in life for Lori (at 36, with 5 children), so we talk with her about that experience, how being in Boston vs Nashville has impacted her career, how and if her success has affected her process, her thoughts on touring and the requirements of an artist career beyond the songs, and much more, all well soaking up her immense gratitude for it all.Get more access and support this show by subscribing to our Patreon, right here.Links:Lori McKennaEp 14 - Mark ErelliEp 27 - Mary GauthierWarner RecordsKris DelmhorstBarry DeanCourtney HartmanLiz RoseHillary LindseyGuy ClarkJustin VernonAaron DessnerBig Red MachineBecky FlukeEp 43 - Gretchen PetersEp 3 - The Milk Carton KidsHardly Strictly Bluegrass FestivalBrandy ClarkClick here to watch this conversation on YouTube.Social Media:The Other 22 Hours InstagramThe Other 22 Hours TikTokMichaela Anne InstagramAaron Shafer-Haiss InstagramAll music written, performed, and produced by Aaron Shafer-Haiss. Jay's been coming across a particular production house on many of his latest vinyl purchases. The company Thirty Tigers bills itself as an entertainment company that specializes in independent label services. They offer distribution, marketing, promotion, management and publicity on an album by album basis & take a commission on the record's sales. It seems to be gaining traction as a diverse range of artists seem to be signing on.Song: Frank Zappa - “Chunga's Revenge“News with Nick is back and, thanks to friend of the show Erik Lenhart (Thanks Erik!), it now has a theme song! This week, we have a Travis Scott update on the Astroworld Festival tragedy from last year, then we hear what Jon Batiste has been up to, and we end up on the Genius v. Google case that the Supreme Court isn't interested in hearing.Song: Queens of the Stone Age - “Carnavoyeur”Finally, Greg has kept his mouth shut for long enough, it's time to talk about “The Idol.” The show has been uniformly panned by critics and audiences alike as confusing and distastefully gratuitous. Starring The Weeknd & Lily-Rose Depp, it's been reported that the show was over 80% shot when The Weeknd & Sam Levinson took over control of the show. It was then quickly reworked, poorly rewritten & shot mostly at The Weeknd's mansion. The result is, per Greg, muddled and awful. You should not check this out.Song: Kurt Rosenwinkel - “The Past Intact”

Tommy Prine released his debut album 'This Far South' via Thirty Tigers, and not through his late father John Prine's label Oh Boy Records, and that was 100% on purpose. He tells Sarah about the joys and pressures of this debut album including working with Ruston Kelly and Gena Johnson, the songwriting winks he thinks his father witnessed, and what it was like to write some of the album at the legendary Carter-Cash house.
Zack Hallcroft moved to Nashville from Wyoming, and immediately got to work. He has worked as a Day-To-Day manager for Texas based Country artist Aaron Watson, along with others. He is currently a Project Management Coordinator working for Thirty Tigers label in Nashville, TN. On this episode he shares some helpful insights on the backend of being a manager, what artists can do to help further their career, and how things seem to just work out along the way.

Sarah is a mother, activist, musician, and proud member and advocate in the LGBTQIA+ community and is at the forefront of the modern queer country scene. The band has taken huge sonic and creative leaps from their last album Years.Mightmare - Sonically, there are a few things we got right in the ‘90s: stompy, rage-fueled queer bands; hazy, uber-pedaled guitar; poeticism to be yelled full-chested towards the windshields of our 2nd (or 3rd, or 4th) hand vehicles. More generally, there was also a lot we got wrong: conversations on mental health, non-conventional identities, issues of accessibility and opportunity, etc. Sarah Shook's new solo project, Mightmare, finds a way to roll those sounds we couldn't live without into a response about the issues we couldn't live with, confronting personal habits and rules in the process. Loved for their work in Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, Shook's Cruel Liars brings their crispy clean, country-twanged vocals to the table alongside a furiously urgent need to express themselves independently. This episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

The things Adeem the Artist hasn't directly experienced, the Knoxville musician has delicately observed in the struggles of strangers and friends in their 34 years, culminating in 11 sung stories of "White Trash Revelry" released on Dec. 2. Perhaps, you have seen the album on "best-of" lists by Rolling Stone and Billboard or heard their music praised by Brandi Carlile, a queer country artist in her own right − and a Grammy-winning one, at that. Conversations surrounding Southern music and culture are changing, and Adeem the Artist is a newfound flagbearer for that movement. But if you ask them, they're just calling it how they see it. Join your host Greg Howard Jr as he gets to the heart of what makes a musician tick with the incomparable MELISSA CARPER!!!After the success of her critically-acclaimed 2021 release Daddy' s Country Gold, Melissa Carper, dubbed “HillBillie Holiday” by friend and collaborator Chris Scruggs, was eager to get back in the studio. With co-producers Andrija Tokic (St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Hurray For The Riff Raff) and Dennis Crouch (The Time Jumpers) behind the boards again at Tokic's analog paradise The Bomb Shelter in Nashville, Carper assembled that same crew of magical music makers - plus a few more - to embark on her newest effort, Ramblin' Soul, set for release November 18th via Thirty Tigers.Carper's deep, old-timey music roots were firmly planted as a child, playing upright bass and singing in her family's traveling country band in rural Nebraska. Her love of country classics was cultivated as she laid beneath the console listening to her parents' record collection. Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, and more became the soundtrack of her youth. When Carper's father gifted her a collection of Jimmie Rodgers' recordings, she began to find her voice and calling as a songwriter. Carper attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on a music scholarship, and spent much of her time in the music library, instinctively drawn to the great jazz classics and jazz vocalists such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and Nat King Cole. She also discovered Lead Belly, uncovering a deep well within when singing his songs. After two years of college, wanderlust set in, and Carper hit the road in the family's 1980 Dodge Maxi Van, and landed in historic Eureka Springs, Arkansas. There, she was welcomed into the busking community, and found a new home base—a place to write, reflect, and rejuvenate in years to come. As she belted out the lyrics to “Ramblin' Man” life began to imitate art. Carper put a few hundred thousand miles on her vans and pick-up trucks, playing the streets and clubs of New Orleans, Austin, and even a stint in NYC as a founding member of The Maybelles. Magnetically pulled into the cultural heritage wherever she went, she immersed herself in the music of those who sang on those same street corners, and off the beaten path in times gone by.Along the way, she founded award-winning bands like power trio The Carper Family, the perfect outlet for her unique skills and style. The band brought her original work to life in a simple yet dynamic fashion that also served her inspirations - country, bluegrass, western swing, and old- style jazz, playing festivals and shows across the globe, and on shows like “A Prairie Home Companion.” Carper also holds a spot in award-winning Arkansas foursome Sad Daddy, and founded roots duo Buffalo Gals with Sad Daddy bandmate and partner, award-winning fiddler Rebecca Patek. In 2020, grappling with the loss of regular gigs, Carper and Patek moved to a friend's farm near Austin, working in exchange for housing, organic vegetables, and fresh, country air. “I had a handful of songs about rambling around and living a free life that I wanted to weave through the album,” Carper recalls. “I wrote the title track driving back home to Texas, and it felt like the seeds of the next album were planted.”Melissa Carper's WebsiteBandcampInstagramFacebook
This week's guest is River (a.k.a. Sarah) Shook. As the bandleader and namesake of Sarah Shook & The Disarmers, Shook has ardently toured throughout the U.S. and Europe. They've released some excellent albums, including Nightroamer, which came out on Thirty Tigers in February. Following the release of that acclaimed album and ample touring in support of the record, Shook's "dark pop" project called Mightmare just put out its debut album on Kill Rock Stars last week. Before Shook and company hit the road for the first Mightmare tour (including an Oct. 29 show at Cactus Club), they spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about hitting the road in a big way again, releasing two drastically different albums on two respected labels in the same calendar year and how their recent run of European shows went. Naturally, the conversation also moved to Shook's musical history. Over the course of the discussion, Shook talked about growing up in a religious household and only being allowed to listen to worship and classical music, teaching themself to play guitar on an acoustic borrowed from a friend, the origin of early projects that eventually morphed into The Disarmers, and some of their favorite experiences from their career. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. Music used in this episode comes courtesy of Devils Teeth ("The Junction Street Eight Tigers") and Mightmare ("Easy").
Sweeney releases new album on Sept 23rd Sunny Sweeney's new album, Married Alone, drops on September 23rd via Thirty Tigers. Produced by Paul Cauthen and The Texas Gentlemen's Beau Bedford, Married Alone takes listeners on a vibey ride from rowdy juke joints to lonely hotel rooms over the course of twelve tracks. Ranging from sweet acoustic Americana to painful, pedal steel ballads to unrestrained breakup kiss-offs to an emotional duet with country legend Vince Gill, the album captures perfectly the broad spectrum of Sweeney's talents as a songwriter and a performer. Sweeney is also the host of a new morning show on Willie Nelson's exclusive SiriusXM channel, Willie's Roadhouse (ch. 59) and on the SXM App, dubbed Sunny Side Up. On weekday mornings, from 6 am until noon ET, Sweeney presents over four decades of classic country hits from the ‘50s through the ‘80s by artists including the channel's namesake Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Waylon Jennings, Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline and many more. This week, the show dials into the Nashville studio of one of the most gifted songwriters and empathic storytellers of her generation: Mary Gauthier. While Mary has become known for her darkly honest tales of overcoming addiction and seeking truth and joy after overcoming her troubled upbringing in Louisiana, she was nominated for a Grammy for her devastating record Rifles & Rosary Beads (co-written with U.S. veterans and their loved-ones) and her new record may be her most surprising and moving collection yet. Dark Enough To See The Stars, which drops June 3rd on Thirty Tigers, is in many ways an unabashed romance album, celebrating, in her own sardonic John Prine-meets-Anthony Bourdain style, how lovely it can be to find true love and creative joy at long last. During the pandemic she began performing a weekly stream with her amor, the talented songwriter Jaimee Harris, called Sundays with Mary - and while Gauthier has now returned to the road, the cathartic weekly song sharing show has continued too. Harris helped write the swoon-worthy traveling song “Amsterdam” on the newest LP.Gauthier's road to stability and creative contentment was a long one. As she gamely explains in this intense conversation, she made the leap to leave the relentless life of being a cook and restaurant owner (and partaker in too many illegal substances) and devoted herself to songwriting after getting arrested at thirty. Was she an instant hit on folk stages in her then base of Boston? Not exactly. In fact, she couldn't step on any stage without shaking. But she kept at it and the stories flowed. Early tours with Prine gave her confidence. Her breakout record Mercy Now (2005) chronicles her technicolor debauched early years with the clear-eyed grace of the newly sober, trying to give forgiveness to her troubled family and to herself for making it through. Being an openly gay songwriter, she took early inspiration from her heroes the Indigo Girls who showed her there was a place for a new kind of empowered songwriting, not just for women, but for anyone who wanted to look deeper into what women are experiencing behind closed doors. If Gauthier has one superpower as a songwriter it's her ability to empathize with everyone around her - even the troubled soldiers who she teamed up with on Rifles & Rosary Beads. We have way more in common with each other than many may think - overcoming trauma is pretty damn universal. So grab your favorite beverage, your coziest blanket and come join Dana in the Book Nook with her guest, prolific author & singer/songwriter Tim Easton!American songwriter Tim Easton was born on the Canadian border in upstate New York and spent his formative years living in Tokyo, Japan and Akron, Ohio. Traveling early and often, he learned the ways of the road and rails and spent 7 years as a bonafide troubadour, making his way around Europe, playing the streets and clubs, living in Paris, London, Madrid, Prague, Dublin, and wherever he laid his hat. It was this period of time when he developed his songwriting style - folk based storytelling and personal traveling tales, often peppered with bold confessions or "tell it as it is" reality. Rolling Stone Magazine praised him as "having a novelist's sense of humanity." Returning to his roots in North America, moving to New York City and then Los Angeles, he signed with New West Records and released five critically acclaimed solo albums starting with 2001's "The Truth About Us," which featured three fourths of WILCO as the backing band. Invitations to be a support act from mentors Lucinda Williams and John Hiatt arrived. Easton settled in the burgeoning art and music scene of Joshua Tree, California between worldwide tours. After becoming a Father and re-locating to Nashville, Easton recorded an album for THIRTY TIGERS ("NOT COOL" 2013), which accented the stripped down Memphis & Sun Studios sound of the Tennessee Three. His next album 2016's "AMERICAN FORK," was a grand departure from his previous efforts, featuring a fully flushed out backing band with elaborate songs arrangements. His most recent album, "Paco & The Melodic Polaroids," is a fully stripped down, solo-acoustic album celebrating 30 years of companionship with "Paco," his trusty Gibson J-45 acoustic guitar. The new project was recorded DIRECT TO LACQUER at The Earnest Tube Studio in Bristol, Virginia. Recently, Easton reached the milestone of having 100 Published original songs which he celebrated by releasing 100 solo performance videos on 100 consecutive days, all posted on his personal YouTube channel. He currently resides in Nashville, Tennessee. You can find Tim at www.timeaston.com or on all major social media platforms.Don't miss this episode...Just choose "Self Publish -N- 30 Days Podcast" when you click the magic link below!https://linktr.ee/selfpublishn30daysYou can also view this episode on our YouTube Channel here:https://youtu.be/QZ_j6MbX2XsTune in for a new episode every Tuesday night at 7:00 pm (CST). We had the pleasure of interviewing Greensky Bluegrass over Zoom video! Greensky Bluegrass are thrilled to announce their return to Colorado for four unforgettable performances. The band will kick things off with An Evening With Greensky Bluegrass Sept 14 and 15 at the Dillon Amphiteater. Then, the band will head down the mountain to Morrison for two more fun-filled evenings at Red Rocks Sepr 16 and 17. Special guests for Red Rocks TBA. For more information and all up to date news and tour info visit greenskybluegrass.com. Earlier this year, the band released their eighth studio album Stress Dreams via Thirty Tigers. Ahead of the release, Stress Dreams received high praise from critics. Garden & Gun calls the album "one of the most complete and engaging of the group's more than twenty-year career" and Glide says “Stress Dreams perfectly exemplifies, once again, why Greensky Bluegrass is heralded as one of the most important & influential bands of the modern progressive-bluegrass era.” About Greensky Bluegrass:Since their 2000 formation in Kalamazoo, MI, the quartet—Anders Beck [dobro], Michael Arlen Bont [banjo], Dave Bruzza [guitar], Mike Devol [upright bass], and Paul Hoffman [mandolin]—have unassumingly progressed into a phenomenon on their own terms with the undying support of a devout audience. Rolling back and forth across North America on successive tours, they've sold out multiple dates at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, the Ryman Auditorium, the Fillmore Detroit, Riviera Theater Chicago, and many more. Beyond standout sets at Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, New Orleans Jazz Festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, and Austin City Limits, they co-own and have headlined 4848 Festival and Strings & Sol. In 2019, "All For Money" marked their second #1 debut on the Billboard Top Bluegrass Albums Chart and third straight Top 3 entry. They've also earned critical acclaim from Billboard, Parade, NPR, and Rolling Stone who hailed them as “representing the genre for a whole new generation.” For the past century, bluegrass music has traditionally relayed real tales of American life, struggle, tragedy, and triumph. It gives a voice to the quiet, yet colorful stories woven into the fabric of the country itself. Greensky Bluegrass live these stories through their records and performances. When touring ceased in 2020 in the face of the global pandemic, the band hunkered down and compiled demos individually at first, sharing emails and voice notes. In July 2020, they got together for the first time in four months, dedicating rehearsals to the development of the new material. Once circumstances safely permitted, they recorded what would become Stress Dreams during a session in Guilford, VT and two sessions in Asheville, NC with frequent collaborator “and old friend” Dominic John Davis as producer and “wizard engineer” Glenn Brown mixing. They preserved the hallmarks of their sound while widening its expanse. “Greensky is and always has been very unique in our world,” says Paul Hoffman. “We put our love, energy, and focus into what we appreciate about our music. We come together as a band in a way that's organic. We take a lot of pride in how we grow and challenge each other too. We're maturing together. I think we get more Greensky all of the time.”We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Jacob Bryant over Zoom video!Edgy, outlaw country rocker Jacob Bryant unleashes his new album, Bar Stool Preacher from Thirty Tigers and American Roots Records, today. Wide Open Country premiered the official music video to the album's focus track, "The Bottom (Raise 'Em Up)", which was also supported by CMT.com, while PopWrapped premiered the lyric video to the song.Produced by Bryant, Jesse Triplett, Brandon Metcalf, Noah Gordon and Jeff Catton, Bar Stool Preacher was recorded at South X Sea Studios in Nashville. The 13-song collection stays true to Bryant's trademark, deeply personal style that has built an eager fan base and caught the attention of industry heavyweights like Thirty Tigers. The global music marketing, management, distribution and publishing company recently inked its deal with Bryant and American Roots Records. "I think Jacob has it in him to be a major star, and I'm proud that he and his team picked us to help him realize his promise,” shared Thirty Tigers President David Macias. After losing his mother in 2010, the budding singer-songwriter battled depression and anxiety, self-medicated with alcohol and cocaine and ultimately suffered a heart attack at the age of just 19, but he transformed the pain into passion. "Music is healing. As simple as that sounds, the process of creating my art about the life experiences I have had is my therapy," Bryant explained. "From writing the songs, recording, mixing and mastering to finally seeing a finished product in my hands has been extremely therapeutic for me."About Jacob Bryant:With powerhouse vocals, bold songwriting talent and a dynamic live show, Bryant continues breaking the mold as a new artist. The singer-songwriter is a true road warrior and spent hundreds of thousands of miles on the road playing in honky tonks, fairs and even the Mother Church of Country Music, Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. Bryant has built an eager fan base while developing his trademark, deeply personal songs. This is an episode that I've been looking forward to since before (*both laugh*) was even an idea for a show. I was introduced to Sarah Shook's music when their debut album, Sidelong, was rereleased by Bloodshot Records back in 2017 (it had initially been self-released by their band, Sarah Shook and the Disarmers, several years prior but I was waaaay out of the loop at that point). I found Sidelong to be an interesting listen; it felt like it ran a real throwback country-and-western vibe through a little bit of a modern roadhouse filter. It certainly wasn't like much else I listened to at the time, and Sidelong and its follow-up, 2018's Years, even stood out amongst the large quantity of Bloodshot artists I'd been listening to for a long time (Cory Branan, Scott H. Biram, Murder By Death, Lydia Loveless, etc). The Disarmers went into the studio in California to record their third album in early 2020, just as the world was on the cusp of shutting down for the foreseeable future. Label issues and supply chain issues and inability to tour issues got in the way got in the way, as they're wont to do. Fast forward to 2022 and Sarah Shook is on the cusp of releasing their third album. It's called Nightroamer and it's on a new label (Thirty Tigers) and it's really, REALLY good. Fans of Sarah Shook and the Disarmers will certainly find plenty of recognizable sounds, but there are left turns and even-further-left turns and some new and different subject matter. All of that results in an immensely compelling listen, easily their best output to date. We caught up with Sarah to talk at length about the new album; from finishing the recording roughly a week before the pandemic became "a thing" in the States, to the obvious label issues, to the choice of when to actually release it to the world. We also talked about some of the subject matter; parts of the album were written after Shook got sober, and obviously created a very different writing process for them this time around. Perhaps most compellingly, we talked about their increasing involvement as a vocal force to be reckoned with, advocating for the elevating of queer and non-white voices in the country music world. Oh, and we talked about their growing up in strictly religious household and teaching themselves to play guitar and write songs in spite of having no popular music frame of reference, a concept that is truly mind-boggling to me. Nightroamer is due out February 18th. Pre-orders are still available here: https://www.disarmers.com/store/Music-c23349544 You can also check out the Disarmers' videos and live performances and more on their YouTube page here: https://www.youtube.com/c/SarahShooktheDisarmers/videos (*both laughs*) theme song is an excerpt from [laughs] track "Hurts To Laugh." © KALI MASI 2021 ℗ Take This To Heart Records 2021

They smash the boundaries between the band, theater troupe, and cinematic masterminds with a series of celebrated albums and videos, and the immersive world of Avatar Country, a fantastical land where metal rules supreme. In keeping with their customary larger-than-life-ness, the band is back with not one but TWO brand new songs.Avatar have shared the official music video for "Going Hunting," directed once again by Johan Carlén, and fan track "Barren Cloth Mother." The black and white, animated visual for "Going Hunting" features a giant insect as its protagonist, faceless men in suits, the band performing, and much more in its storyline. Today, you're going to hear an in-depth interview between Amy and Nashville-via-London emerging blues and roots music duo Ida Mae. Chris Turpin and Stephanie Jean comprise this soulful husband-and-wife act which just released its sophomore LP Click Click Domino via Thirty Tigers. Whether they're performing an intimate set in the English countryside or an amped up big stage show opening for Greta Van Fleet, which they have indeed done, this duo's obvious energy connects with people of all ages and simply digs in until you're hooked. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today our guest is Oliver Wood, a Grammy-nominated artist and founding member of the Wood Brothers, who has also just released his debut solo album, Always Smilin', on Honey Jar & Thirty Tigers. Oliver's spent the better part of the 21st century earning an international audience with his sharp songwriting and savvy guitar chops, and one-of-a-kind voice that's somehow raw and smooth at the same time. Oliver says that his new album is first and foremost an album of celebration, with themes of kindness and hopefulness, while also acting as a bridge between his past and present through a wide-range of musical collaborations, including Susan Tedeschi, Phil Cook, John Medeski, Carsie Blanton and others. It's an album of communal recordings. It's an album about right now. And right now, Oliver Wood is smiling. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Ida Mae moved to the USA with nothing but Chris' National Steel guitar, a tin tambourine, a broken major record deal and their debut record under our arms.It was at huge personal risk they made this decision. After years of sleepless nights on the road, saying yes to every show offer we had, driving ourselves 15 hours to the next show after 6.5 weeks on the road, sleeping in dilapidated Motel's, playing in Casino bars, falling asleep in hotel lobby's, losing guitars across Europe, writing songs in the backs of cars swamped with our equipment, traveling 100,000's of miles to play shows we'll make a loss on, to then eventually meeting and playing with some of their musical heroes and being invited to play some incredible venues with artists such as Greta Van Fleet, Willie Nelson, Blackberry Smoke and Marcus King. On their upcoming album Click Click Domino the pair have pushed themselves to break new ground both as artists and producers, leaning on everything they’d learned collaborating with producer Ethan Johns on Chasing Lights as well as other top-shelf producers over the years likeT Bone Burnett (Elvis Costello, Robert Plant & Alison Krauss), M. Ward, Ryan Hadlock (The Lumineers, Brandi Carlile), Jake Gosling (Ed Sheeran, Shawn Mendes), and Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys). Pre-order or pre-save Click Click Domino here. John Oates & The Good Road Band ‘Live In Nashville’ Set For September 18th Release Four new originals along with covers of Mississippi John Hurt, Jimmy Rogers, Don Gibson highlight second Thirty Tigers album LOS ANGELES, July 31, 2020—Rock & Roll Hall of Famer John Oates has had a home in Nashville for more than a decade, performing with some of the city’s most sought-after musicians. John’s Thirty Tigers debut, Arkansas, performed with The Good Road Band, was released in 2018, proving a critical and commercial success in the Americana and roots community, a combination of originals with classic songs popularized by Mississippi John Hurt, Jimmy Rodgers and Don Gibson. After two-plus solid years of honing their chops through touring, that group – mandolin stalwart Sam Bush, pedal steel maestro Russ Pahl (Dan Auerbach), electric guitar whiz Guthrie Trapp, expert bassist Steve Mackay, cello prodigy Nate Smith (Kacey Musgraves) and drummer/percussionist extraordinaire Josh “Daddy” Day – returns intact for Live In Nashville, set for release on September 18 on all major digital streaming platforms. The set was recorded last January 9 at Station Inn, the legendary intimate listening room in The Gulch section of Nashville where the band first took shape. “This album represents a full-circle moment for me,” said John, in quarantine with his family in his adopted Music City home. “It feels like the culmination of the Arkansas project, being able to bring these guys back, and to be able to make this record after touring and playing so many shows together.” Inspired by Mississippi John Hurt, Live in Nashville features songs like the gospel-blues opener, “Lord Send Me,” the Delta blues of the standard “Stack o Lee” and an electrified take on “Make Me a Pallet on Your Floor,” dubbed “Pallet Soft and Low,” where John manages to show off some of his well-honed rock guitar skills. In yet another “full circle moment,” John pays tribute to his own childhood with a cover of Don Gibson’s “Oh Lonesome Me,” the first song he learned to sing and play on guitar as a six-year-old after hearing it on the radio. Several of the songs come with Oates’ own stories about the songs, connecting the dots as to their connections, including popular hits of the era like the Mississippi Sheiks’ 1930 success, “Sittin’ on Top of the World,” Emmett Miller’s 1924 breakthrough, “Anytime” and Jimmy Rogers’ 1932 classic, “Miss the Mississippi and You.” Watch "Anytime" HERE “I was always fascin
Christian Roreau - Thirty Tigers Management Today we speak with Christian Roreau, artist manager at Thirty Tigers, one of the leading independent distribution and management companies. Christian started out as a journalism major at NYU, spent some time fronting a band before settling down in Nashville and landing at Thirty Tigers. Like so many others, artist management wasn’t a career path of choice as much as an opportunity that presented itself. His time nurturing the careers of artists as diverse as Trampled By Turtles and Lizzo give insight into the need to be open to possibilities and leading from the heart. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Christian.

Lucinda Williams - “Man Without a Soul” from the 2020 album Good Souls Better Angels on Highway 20/Thirty Tigers. "All the money in the world / Will never fill that hole / You're a man bought and sold / You're a man without a soul" Over the past 40 years, Lucinda Williams has built a name for herself with her vivid storytelling, which has earned her four Grammy Awards throughout her career. But her forthcoming full-length, Good Souls Better Angels, will "forgo the personal and narrative-based songcraft that has become synonymous with her name and instead speaks to some of the injustices permeating our society." Today's Song of the Day perfectly illustrates this shift. And while she never directly names who the subject of the song is, it's not hard to guess who she's referring to. To say today's episode is personal would be an understatement. Your host Z. Lupetin founded the group in Venice Beach, CA over ten years ago with a lucky Craigslist ad that started it all. What started as a clandestine jam group with as many as ten instruments going full blast at an after hours advertising office, the band was soon starting in speakeasies and small venues around LA, with the band eventually recording their beloved live album “With A Lampshade On” at the famed Troubadour in LA and the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. In 2013 Liz Beebe joined the group and they began touring full time, becoming a powerhouse eight piece band that wowed festivals and stages in over dozen countries, playing over a hundred and fifty shows a year and releasing seven full length records along the way - including their soul-dipped self-titled work from 2017 produced by Grammy-winner Ted Hutt, the co-founder of Flogging Molly. This week celebrates the release of their most daring work to date - “Is It You, Is It Me” produced by Sam Kassirer (Lake Street Dive, Josh Ritter) and engineered by Brian Joseph (Bon Iver, Sufjan Stephens). The album doesn't shy away from confronting the powerful political fallouts happening in families and communities around the country - and their emotional rock n roller “Get Rid Of You” pays homage to the courageous kids in Parkland, FL who stood up and demanded gun control measures be taken now - prompting recent glowing write-ups in Rolling Stone and Billboard. Z was able to gather the whole band around the mic while on the road in New Hampshire - make sure you stick around to the end of the episode as the band shares their intimate acoustic single “Let It Go”.
We had the opportunity to interview Parachute at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego!"There’s a subtle power to the music of Parachute, the Charlottesville-bred pop/rock band behind such hits as the platinum-selling, chart-topping “She Is Love.” With their open-hearted songwriting and indelible melodies, the trio reveals a rare ability to pack deep layers of feeling inside the most immediately catchy pop track. And on their new self-titled full-length, Parachute bring that dynamic to a batch of songs exploring everything from love and loss to anxiety and regret, handling each with extraordinary attention to life’s most nuanced moments and intricate details.Their fifth studio effort and debut release for Thirty Tigers, Parachute unfolds with a more artfully minimalist sound than they’ve ever embraced before. In creating the album, the band worked closely with producer Jacquire King (Kings of Leon, James Bay, Dawes), reshaping their decidedly pop demos into songs adorned with raw instrumentation and graceful electronic flourishes.“From the beginning our intention was to simplify everything and keep the songs as stripped-back as we could,” says Anderson. “There’s a lot of space on the album, and Jacquire was really great about reminding us not to take that kitchen-sink approach to the production—to just let the songs breathe.”On the album-opening lead single “Young,” for instance, Parachute offer up a wistful meditation on getting older, embedding the track with delicate beats, elegant horns, and Anderson’s stirringly self-aware lyrics (e.g., “After all this growing up/I’m only good at being young”). The first song Anderson penned for Parachute, “Young” came to life at a time of monumental transition. “We’d just gotten off the road, and I’d sold all my stuff and moved from Nashville to New York to be near my then-girlfriend, now-wife,” Anderson recalls. “The song just spilled out of me one day, and it came from a place of feeling terrified of growing up but also wanting to get to a point of feeling more settled in my life, and not so out at sea.”On the piano-laced “Ocean,” meanwhile, Parachute look back to the period of time before Anderson moved to New York, brilliantly channeling long-distance longing in a hypnotic back-and-forth between hushed intensity and full-tilt expression of lovestruck desire. Next, the piano-led and harmony-rich “Had It All” embodies a different kind of reflection, with Anderson transforming regret into a tender piece of soul-pop. “Writing that song, I put myself back in one of those situations from my past where I’d messed up and hurt somebody,” says Anderson. “It’s sort of my big apology into the unknown, a way of getting out what I’d say to them now if I ever got to see them again.”Parachute takes on a more triumphant mood on songs like “Finally Got It Right,” a brightly textured track capturing the joyful relief that Anderson felt in finding the love of his life. Elsewhere on the album, the band shows their sophisticated sonic range, diving into Latin-flavored acoustic pop on “Talk To Me” and serving up an unstoppable groove on the deceptively upbeat “Dance Around It.” “That song’s about one of those relationships where you know it’s not going to work out, but you can’t bring yourself to break off something that’s been going for such a long time,” says Anderson. “I wanted to see how sad I could make the lyrics while keeping the music as dancey and happy as possible,” he adds. Another inspired experiment in tone, “Someday” builds a beat-driven and powerfully optimistic anthem from a particularly hopeless moment in time. “I wrote that right after the 2016 election, when I was feeling anxious and just had no idea what to do with myself,” says Anderson. “I was purposely trying to counter what I was feeling, and maybe put some kind of positive message out into the world.”To close out the album, Parachute deliver a quietly luminous track that stands in stark contrast to the breezy feel of “Young.” Written soon after Anderson and his wife relocated to San Francisco, “Looking Back” gently telegraphs the undeniable ache of missing the life you’ve left behind. “I’ve always been fascinated with that nostalgic stab you get every now and then, whether it’s from a certain smell or a song or something else that just hits you,” says Anderson. “‘Looking Back’ is me struggling with trying to enjoy the moment, but also letting my mind wander to the things I find comforting.”In the making of such an emotionally honest album, Parachute immersed themselves in a close-knit creative process. “These days it seems like there’s a lot of writing-by-committee, but we wanted to make this album as personal as it could be,” says Anderson. “Most of these songs are just me spilling my guts in my living room and then taking that to the guys, and we’re really proud that now we can all say, ‘This is us.’”That intimacy echoes the earliest days of the band, which formed when Anderson, Stubblefield, and French were still in high school. After spending nearly every afternoon in Anderson’s basement, dreaming up songs showing an intense affinity for classic pop and heartfelt rock and tuneful blue-eyed soul, the band began landing gigs locally and soon gained a following at the nearby University of Virginia. As their inaugural release under the name Parachute, 2009’s Losing Sleep debuted at #2 on the Billboard Digital Albums chart and climbed to #40 on the Billboard 200. Over the next few years, along with releasing The Way It Was and Overnight (which shot to the #3 spot on iTunes), Parachute toured with such artists as Kelly Clarkson, Gavin DeGraw, and Mat Kearney, and completed three sold-out headlining tours. Now, after a decade of touring internationally and turning out hit singles like “She Is Love” (#1 at iTunes), the gold-certified “Kiss Me Slowly,” “Forever and Always,” and the infectious smash single “Without You” (from 2016’s Wide Awake), Parachute is set to embark on The Young Tour 2019, which will travel to 40-plus cities across the U.S.With the release of Parachute, Anderson and his bandmates hope that the album might spark a sense of emotional openness in each listener. “My wife’s a poet, and we talk a lot about guiding people to a certain feeling—the idea of using your words or your music to help them really tunnel down into that feeling,” Anderson says. “I’d love for people to listen to this album and think, ‘I’m feeling something here that I maybe haven’t felt before,’ or even just connect more deeply to a feeling that’s already familiar to them. At the end of the day, it’s always about trying to reach people on that visceral level.”Will Anderson (vocals, guitar)Johnny Stubblefield (drums)Christopher “Kit” French (saxophone, keyboards)https://www.bringinitbackwards.com/Tera@BringinitBackwards.comCREDITS:Theme Song: Scott RussDesign: Oscar Rodriguez

Number 15 of our most popular episodes of 2017 is none other than David Macias. David is the president of Thirty Tigers, an all encompassing music label, management company that has been a trend setter and music industry disrupter since 2002. This was recorded at Thirty Tigers and we talked about the vision of the company, David's philosophy in business, and his thoughts of the ever changing landscape of streaming music and it's effects on artists.
Kim Buie got into the music business through college radio. She's worked in New York, Los Angeles and Nashville at a variety of record companies including some industry giants and some important indie labels. And she's touched a lot of genres, working with artists as diverse as Tom Waits, the Butthole Surfers, Etta James and Richard Thompson. Starting about 15 years ago, she settled into the Americana/roots world as head of A&R for Lost Highway Records, home to Ryan Adams, Lucinda Williams and the historically pivotal O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack. From there she moved on to the multi-faceted music/talent company Thirty Tigers and then to her current home, Americana benchmark label New West, with John Hiatt, Shovels and Rope, Buddy Miller, Sarah Watkins, Nikki Lane and Rodney Crowell. With Crowell, Kim Buie recently made the leap from A&R to producing, helping to shape the sound of his 2017 album Close Ties. Later in the hour, a visit on the go with Nashville roots rock hero Will Hoge as he launches two very different things - an album called Anchors and a new business - a ride service with an all electric fleet and dreams of expanding beyond its successful launch in Nashville.
If you’re in the know, you know who David Macias is. If you don’t, allow me to introduce to you one of the most brilliant minds in the music industry today. David has been causing disruptions through his life. He has won quiz bowl tournaments for his alma mater that has been historically a black university, he worked his way up to the top to eventually work directly under Clive Davis, he has a Grammy as a producer, he graduated from Leadership Music, and he and Deb Markland developed a business that is bucking trends in the music industry. That business…Thirty Tigers. Thirty Tigers is a full service record label that has worked with clients Carlos Santana, Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, Patty Griffin, Trampled by Turtles, The Avett Brothers, Low, Ryan Bingham, Flogging Molly, Jason Isbell, The Josh Abbott Band, Chase Rice, Casey Donahew, The Eli Young Band, Will Hoge, Aaron Watson, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, and many others. I met David in an apartment inside the label and we had a chat about streaming services, his thoughts on the present day music industry, and what is Thirty Tigers up to. You even get a sneak peek inside the deal you would get if you were a Thirty Tigers artist. We try to project what will happen in the near future of streaming services and the industry as a whole. Van Hunt, the Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/producer has announced his fifth studio album The Fun Rises, TheFun Sets to be released May 5th via Nashville-based Thirty Tigers and Hunt's own label godless-hotspot. Like its predecessor - 2011's What Were You Hoping For?, which The New York Times hailed as "ambitious and exciting" - The Fun Rises, The FunSets is enticingly adventurous. Of the album Van Hunt states: ""The drive to create something new and different is what keeps me excited and engaged as an artist. It's the thrill of appearing with The Afghan Whigs at Coachella and then performing at a gospel quartet music special all in the same week. The excitement is in constantly evolving as an artist. It's how I got from my first album,Van Hunt (alternative soul, electro-funk music influenced by Prince and The Ohio Players), to my last album What Were You Hoping For?, which was Bowie-influenced, progressive rock and soul." Full of African rhythms, blues and funk, the new album is full of contemporary components often found in the music of St. Vincent, James Blake, Dev Hynes and FKA Twigs. "It is the history of Black- American music filtered through modern technology," explains Hunt. Today you can hear the first single off the album "Vega (stripes on)," a percolating, lusty track that simmers with jangly Howlin' Wolf-style guitars closed with a short rhyme reminiscent of early Raekwon. Pre-order the album now and check out the track above.

John David Kent got his start in professional music at an early age. By the time he was 14, he was touring the world, even appearing on Letterman and Conan, and scored his first major label deal just two years later. With his latest band, he put out his first full-length album as frontman on his very own independent label. Propelled by three Top 20 singles on the Texas Country Charts, he's working with Thirty Tigers to distribute his sophomore project "Before The Sun Comes Up," which is also on his own label. Kelly Lynn caught up with JDK at The Basement here in Nashville to hear more about his new music.

The tour was filled with mistakes and mishaps, but the brotherhood was forming. Album releases came out when Star & Micey was representing their live shows differently. The guys kept pushing and eventually saw the cusp of what could be. They recorded with Thirty Tigers and got hooked up to play big festivals such as SxSW, Justin Timberlake was interested in working with them, and 'I Can't Wait' was playing everywhere.
