A conversation about Plastic with designer Shahar Livne and environmental humanities scholar Heather Davis.Shahar Livne is an award winning conceptual material designer. Livne's lifelong fascinations in nature, biology, science, and philosophy developed into an intuitive material experimentation way of work during her degree studies at the Design Academy Eindhoven. Shahar brings life to unique stories through objects and installations centered around materials as carriers of narratives. Some of Livne's projects deal with obscure materials such as blood, man-made fossils, crystallization and more, today we are going to be focussing on plastic, and Shahar has put me in touch with Heather Davis who I am thrilled to have here as our second guest todayHeather Davis is Assistant Professor and Director of Culture and Media at The New School in New York City. As an interdisciplinary scholar working in environmental humanities, media studies, and visual culture, she is interested in how the saturation of fossil fuels has shaped contemporary culture. Davis is the author of over 80 articles, book chapters, reviews, and catalogue essays. Her most recent book, Plastic Matter (Duke University Press, 2022) traces plastic's relations to geology, media, biology, and race to show how matter itself has come to be understood as pliable, disposable, and consumable.LINKSShahar Livne: https://www.instagram.com/_shaharlivnedesignstudio_/https://www.shaharlivnedesign.com/Shahar Livne, Metamorphism: https://www.shaharlivnedesign.com/metamorphismHeather Davis: https://heathermdavis.com/Heather Davis, Plastic Matter: https://www.dukeupress.edu/plastic-matterBernadette Bensaude-Vincent, French philosopher and historian - Heather spoke about her writing on the endless possibilities of matter and material. To the cult British interior and furniture designer Ilse Crawford, interiors too often take a backseat to architecture. Through her humanistic, systems-thinking, “Frame for Life” approach, however, Crawford has shown how interiors and architecture should instead be viewed on the same plane and, as she puts it on this episode of Time Sensitive, “walk hand in hand.” Widely known for creating indoor spaces that are notable in their tactility, warmth, and comfort—environments that incorporate, to use her phrase, “visceral materiality”—Crawford oversees her namesake London-based design studio, Studioilse, which she launched in 2003, and whose projects include the first Soho House members' club in New York, the Ett Hem hotel in Stockholm, and the Cathay Pacific lounges in Hong Kong. Crawford is also the founder of the department of Man and Wellbeing at the Design Academy Eindhoven, in the Netherlands, which she headed for two decades. Prior to her career as a designer, she was the celebrated founding editor of Elle Decoration U.K.On this episode, Crawford discusses her approach to crafting beautiful, highly original spaces that push against today's speedy, copy-paste, Instagram-moment world; her early career in media; and her personal definition of the word “slow.”Special thanks to our Season 9 presenting sponsor, L'École, School of Jewelry Arts.Show notes:[5:09] StudioIlse[7:25] A Frame for Life[58:32] Design Academy Eindhoven[7:25] Svenkst Tenn[7:25] Ett Hem[16:36] Jeanette Mix[1:02:51] Cathay Pacific[47:42] Elle Decoration[29:11] The Eyes of the Skin[33:52] Alvar Aalto[33:52] Paimio Sanatorium[33:52] Christopher Alexander[31:35] Sensual Home[35:24] Leonard Koren[35:46] Frida Escobedo[47:42] Architect's Journal[47:42] The World of Interiors[47:42] Min Hogg[52:48] Donna Karan[54:04] Soho House[54:04] Babington House[1:00:08] Home Is Where the Heart Is?

Christien Meinderstma is a Dutch designer who has a fascination with materials. She currently has an installation at the V&A, entitled Re-forming Waste, which shows new work based around her interest in linoleum, as well as technological advances with the material she has described as her first love, wool. Christien came to wider attention initially when she graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2003, with a book that catalogued a week's worth of objects confiscated at security checkpoints in Schipol Airport. She followed that up a few years later, with PIG 05049, an extraordinary tome which looked at all the products made using a single pig. Her work is the collections of MoMA, the V&A, and the Vitra Design Museum. Over the years, she has won numerous Dutch Design Awards, as well as creating the award for the prestigious Earthshot Prize. In this episode we talk about: working alone; experimenting with linoleum; her family's history with wool; the importance of provenance; defining failure and success; not being interested in selling things or mass production; working with the city of Rotterdam to find ways to deal with its wool; collaborating with a ‘wobot'; designing like a journalist, the energy of Design Academy Eindhoven; and the unexpected uses of a  pig…We are delighted this episode has been sponsored by the Surface Design Show. For this episode we are bringing together three special guests to introduce our new collaboration with Het HEM. We've brought back artists Rebeca Romero (Ep.3) and Akinsola Lawanson (Ep.7) together with curator Maia Kenney to discuss magic and technology within their works and research. Romero's exploration of trance in The New Worshipers and Lawanson's spirit world in Bosode each examine the intersections of these themes, how they influence each other, and how might magic in the present influence technological futures. Hear Romero, Lawanson, Kenney, and of course your hosts, examine how our relationship to talismans, phones, and worldbuilding can be more entangled than you might think. Collectively we consider the materiality of known and unknown worlds, the politics of witchcraft and what ethics might be necessary before engaging in scientific fact and mystical forces. For this extended conversation we will also be introducing Het HEM's The Couch, a digital editorial and arts platform to continue these debates through texts, screenings and online discourse.Rebeca Romero is an interdisciplinary artist born in Peru and based in London. Through a range of media that includes sculpture, ceramics, textiles, sound, performance and video, she explores concepts of diasporic identity, truth, fiction, and their relationship to the digital age. Often combining Pre-Columbian iconography with advanced scanning and printing technologies and materials ranging from clay to plastic, her works swing drastically between the past and an alternate future. Examining the story-telling potential of artefacts, Romero looks into the intervention of the digital archive as a history-making technique. Online museum archives become an excavation ground for the collection of data that she later recontextualizes, reassembles and re-presents.Akinsola Lawanson is a British-Nigerian multidisciplinary artist living and working in London. He works in moving images, installations and video-game engines in projects that examine relational systems, digital technologies and process philosophy. Akinsola's video works are inspired by the alt-Nollywood movement, which borrows narrative, stylistic and visual conventions of Nollywood but with politically subversive ends.Maia Kenney is an art historian, curator and critic specialised in the feminist underpinnings of modernist art movements (and a proponent of the destruction of Modernism as a Eurocentric storytelling device). She is the curator and editor of The Couch, Het HEM's digital artistic platform, and teaches theory in the Master of Contextual Design at Design Academy Eindhoven.

And Raf is also a performing musician, clarinet player and conductor. He played, for example, at the beginning of the 2000s, 300 concerts a year.  We start with sharing the incredible dreams he had as a child and a unique ritual he did in his adolescent years. And we get some insights into his leadership skills, for example, the advantages of having an outside view, combined with excellent listening skills and the practice of 'not knowing' and how to let inspiration flow in two ways. So, when you are open, then people will also be open. We talk about leading and following, and Raf explains what it means as a conductor to have a total overview and a well-defined score and how you can lead without explicitly leading. Marina Otero Verzier is an architect, researcher and curator, who is also the current Head of the MA in Social Design program at Design Academy Eindhoven. Until very recently, she was the director of research at the Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. Her work touches on many socio-political and environmental dimensions of design and cultural production; as well as the emergence of new paradigms for institutions. Together with Marina we unpack what designing the social might mean, and we explore the outer reaches of architectural research; both in the political and ecological realms. I think her particular mix of cautious optimism and her introspective openness allows us to reflect on how culture can be put to work, both in everyday life and in the sites of knowledge production, whether it's the museum, the school, or the archive.EPISODE NOTES & LINKSMarina Otero Verzier is an architect. Canon has the same root as Kanun, or Qanun, which means the rule, or the law. So in a way, these works become unquestionable. Cartesian Grid refers to grids often used in architecture as the basis for organizing spatial form, as composed of squares (or cubes) aligned with the Cartesian coordinate axes. Cartesian coordinate axes exist in a coordinate system that specifies each point uniquely by a pair of numerical coordinates, which are the signed distances to the point from two fixed perpendicular oriented lines, measured in the same unit of length. For this episode I spoke with globally renowned industrial designer Oscar Peña, and we focused the chat on supporting young creatives! Oscar has a huge respect for the human experience and this episode covers the concept of mentoring and giving back to a younger generation. It celebrates the idea of a non-linear career path, taking calculated risks and the concept of ‘playing seriously'. Originally from Columbia, Oscar moved to the US and then Europe to lead the ‘Man and Activity' programme for 23 years at the Design Academy Eindhoven which is recognised as one of the most progressive design schools in the world. His wife Ilse Crawford, a globally respected Interior Designer was Head of the ‘Man and Wellbeing' department there too. Oscar was also Global Creative Director of Philips Lighting and is now Co-Principle alongside Ilse who founded Studioilse in 2003. Studioilse comprises of an exceptionally skilled team spanning interior design, product design, architecture, creative direction, strategy, and writing. For me, I realised that supporting young creatives in recognising their values and aims is not only hugely rewarding, but so important for the future of our industry. I want to teach people that it isn't a negative thing to take detours and find yourself on a different career path from the original plan. The mantra of ‘If Not Now Then When?” is to appreciate opportunities that come your way as not everyone has that luxury. Your journey will be influenced by experiences gained and should be as individual as you are! www.studioilse.com | @studioilse_ | @designacademyeindhoven | @abstractdesign www.inntw.co.uk | @ifnotnowthen_when | #INNTWstories

The modernity that came with the post-war period and dominated the second half of the 20th century, looked kindly at the concept of Play. Play was widely seen as a valuable tool for the development of children and for the prevention of delinquency. In our time, there has been a resurgence of interest in the use of Play as a factor in the planning of community, social environments and interfaces that promote life quality and growing of creative and responsible citizens. For Johan Huizinga, the dutch historian, we say that a civilisation becomes more serious as it becomes structurally more complex and sophisticated. This is when contact with PLAY is completely lost.To help me better understand the importance of Play in design I invited Marta Rios. “When you start to deconstruct or question design, all sorts of questions emerge: How does design affect our behaviour, our use of resources, our choices and freedoms to participate in social, political or economic decision-making, and the extent to which we feel we have agency over our lives?” That is a point raised by Jan Boelen, a curator, educator and researcher in art and design who has been the head of the Master's department of Social Design at the Design Academy Eindhoven since 2010. Jan is one of the co-editors of a provocative new book titled Social Matter, Social Design, a collection of essays that explore uncanny, even disconcerting connections and assumptions about design, and challenge designers to incorporate a more nuanced and complex reading of how the social is intertwined with the material. In this episode of Bevel, we chat with Michael Kaethler, a sociologist of design whose work focuses on the transmission, production and embodiment of knowledge in art and design-oriented practices, and is a co-editor of this new book.

In 2016 he moved to Portland, OR where he continues his art and design practice (Nike NSW FUEL / Special projects and innovation). Having grown up with five brothers in a wildly creative household, Niek maintains a reverence for youthful and unhindered experimentation. His hands-on approach is informed by childhood memories, archetypes, and a ‘need-for-speed' attitude which aims to keep ideas flexible, adaptive, and unconstrained.

Future Matter #1 "ECHO" Written by Callum Copley Narrated by Daan Couzijn Sound and Mixing by Remco Hazewinkel Graphic design by Marick Roy Echo is a work of speculative fiction set in present-day Amsterdam. Through a series of recurring encounters and chance happenings, it tells a story that at its core is a problematization of the notion of individuality and subjectivity. Inspired by Denise Ferreira da Silva's thinking in ‘On Difference Without Separability', Echo attempts to pick up some of the questions raised—rhetorical or otherwise—regarding the conceptual (and literal) possibilities held in discoveries around Quantum Physics. Rather than a speculative future—Echo is a provocation. It is an attempt to use non-classical physics to question the materiality of consciousness and to pose a radical reimagining of agency, relationality, empathy and interdependency. It is an attempt to think through what it means to be connected to someone; what sort of responsibilities does this entail? And how can pushing these dynamics to their extremes reveal what it might mean for new types of being with one and other? Callum Copley is a researcher and writer based between Amsterdam and the UK, examining the political and cultural entanglements of emerging technologies. Through games, film, audio and text, his work explores fiction as a method for both proposing alternative futures as well as enacting radical change in the present. He teaches at the Critical Inquiry Lab (MA) at Design Academy Eindhoven, and the Sandberg Institute, Amsterdam, where he also graduated from the Critical Studies masters program in 2018. He is co-founder of ‘Schemas of Uncertainty' an ongoing research initiative exploring the role of prediction in a contemporary digitized society. He is editor of ‘Reworlding: Ramallah, Short Science Fiction Stories from Palestine' (Onomatopee, 2019), author of the novella ‘φιλία' (2018) and of the collection of short stories ‘Twitchers, Mucklarks and Gravediggers' (2017). futurematter.institute

SONIC ACTS FESTIVAL 2019 – HEREAFTER The Otolith Group and Annie Fletcher – Eastman is the Matter at Hand24 February – De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam, The Netherlands With an introduction by Emily Pethick. From the late 1960s until his death in 1990 at the age of 49, Julius Eastman, the queer African-American avant-garde composer, pianist, vocalist and conductor, wrote and performed compositions whose ecstatic militant minimalism initiated a black radical aesthetic that revolutionised the East Coast’s new music scene of the 1970s and 1980s. No recordings of Eastman’s compositions were released during his lifetime. In January 1980, Julius Eastman was invited by the Music Department at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois to present his compositions Crazy Nigger (1978), Evil Nigger (1979) and Gay Guerrilla (1979). A number of African-American students and one faculty member objected to the titles of Eastman’s compositions. The titles were redacted from the concert programme. Before the concert on 16 January 1980, Eastman delivered a public statement that responded to these objections. The speeches delivered by two speakers in The Otolith Group’s video, The Third Part of the Third Measure (2017) – on display as the installation at the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam during the festival – are based on each performer’s adapted transcription of Eastman’s Northwestern statement. This talk by The Otolith Group – Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun – who will be joined by Annie Fletcher, will focus on the importance of this Afrofuturist artist and expand on ideas in making the film. In May 2019, the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, will present the first large scale solo exhibition of The Otolith Group. The exhibition is curated by Annie Fletcher. Founded by Anjalika Sagar and Kodwo Eshun, The Otolith Group makes films, installations, and performances that are driven by extensive research into the histories of science fiction and the legacies of transnationalism. Their works and curatorial projects explore the temporal anomalies, anthropic inversions and synthetic alienation of the posthuman, the inhuman, the non-human and the anti-human. In 2010 The Otolith Group were nominated for the Turner Prize. Annie Fletcher is the chief curator at the Van Abbemuseum. Her projects include the solo exhibition of Qiu Zhijie, the ten-day project in collaboration with DAI called Becoming More in 2017, a collaborative research project led by Vivian Ziherl called Frontier Imaginaries: Trade Markings in 2018 and a large-scale and travelling museum retrospective of the Otolith Group in 2019. She tutors at De Appel, Amsterdam, Dutch Art Institute, Arnhem and Design Academy Eindhoven. She is part of a team that developed the Museum of Arte Útil with Tania Bruguera in 2013 and continues to develop the Association of Arte Útil today. Other projects include solo exhibitions or presentations with Ahmet Ögut, Hito Steyerl, Sheela Gowda, David Maljković, Jo Baer, Jutta Koether, Deimantas Narkevičius, Minerva Cuevas and long-term projects Be(com)ing Dutch (2006 – 09) and Cork Caucus (2005), both with Charles Esche.

They use the design for the Dutch Post Office as an interesting example about how Dutch Design has developed in the last 20 years. In the role of head of the Man & Communication-department at the Design Academy Eindhoven (which they resigned to in june 2013) they see themselves as cheerleaders, cheering and provoking their students towards a reaction of any kind. They want them to be prepared for the real world, that needs relevant designers with a realistic attitude and creative ideas, more dialogue, less monologue. Recorded at What Design Can Do 2012, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Borre Akkersdijk, who graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven last year, worked in the TextielLab to produce knitted textiles that are padded with a filler thread. The result is a range of ‘stuffed’ garments, including trousers, a parka, a cape and a jacket. When the pattern components emerge from the machine they are ready-made. The fabric’s patterns are derived from an old kilim, which had belonged to a favourite aunt who recently died. This rug was woven by hand, so it exhibits crooked lines, irregularities and the marks of age, features that Borre imitated in the digital conversion. It is like his personal signature in an otherwise industrial product. Borre Akkersdijk experimented with the production of thickly padded knits on the large circular knitting machine in the TextielLab. The machine was specially fitted with so-called padding mangle for this project, making it possible to produce knits that are padded out with filler threads. The investigation focused on the knitting of lengths of cloth in which the pattern components are filled out. The edges of each section remain attached, so the padding remains inside when the pattern components are cut from the base. Finishing is no longer necessary. The first test, with just a sleeve, pointed in the right direction immediately. He then carried out colour tests on the actual pattern, a hand-drawn kilim motif. How do the colours mix together and to what extent must they vary and follow the pattern? He eventually decided to knit the garments in colour mixes, because this renders the fabric more lively and exciting. Simone & Andrea took inspiration in the history of a small city in Sicily, Caltagirone. The little town, famous for its ceramics and local tradition, has over 300 craftsmen working in the city. As an iconic base and as inspiration they used one of the most famous traditional Sicilian artworks "Teste id moro" referring to the vases which show the face of a native African. The once conquering Moors returned several centuries later as immigrants, leaving behind an ever changing mix of traditions and materials to be absorbed as culture. The duo rethought the iconic vase and added their own design touch during their Masters at the Design Academy Eindhoven. The distant worlds of artifacts and illegal immigration began to blur together revealing unusual correlations. This resulted in several objects in the "Moulding Tradition" collection. video by designguide.tv interview by Matylda Krzykowski (matandme.net) more information can be found on www.formafantasma.com

We take a closer look at 3 projects of Master of design graduates from the Design Academy Eindhoven. Their projects seem to be focussed on life's rituals and typical behaviours. Ryou Jihyun's project shows us techniques used in the past for storing food without the use of a fridge. In a society where energy consumption becomes an entire nation's problem, these age-old methods get new life when applied to a modern day design and thought process. People increasingly suffer from depression, anxiety and tension because of their inability to deal with death of their loved ones. Wing Lam Kwok takes a closer look at bereavement and the process that surrounds it. By designing a new ritual she hopes to address grief not only in terms of psychology but also as a new task in the humanitarian design field. And lastly we take a look at a custom most of us have become used to in the morning, that first cup of coffee. Jo Nakamura took an extensive look at the many existing coffee makers in the world, and took the most inspirational ones to further develop them into a brand new ritual of making coffee. Resulting in a unique appliance giving ode to the extraction process which has been around for over 300 years. It's not just about functionality. www.designguide.tv This show is sponsored by Squarespace: get 12% off by using the code: YDN check out Squarespace.com and build your own beautiful site in minutes! more info on http://offers.mevio.com/squarespace-coupon/designguide.html

Powered by nothing but sunlight and some threads, Thomas Traxlers' "The idea of a tree project" shows us how objects can grow during the course of a day. The installation is powered by a couple of solar cells which power the entire device, causing the process to move faster or slower depending on the amount of available light. The speed of the process determines the amount of saturation of the thread, giving a visual recording in the resulting object. Thomas Traxler just graduated from the IM Masters department of the Design Academy Eindhoven, 2008. www.mischertraxler.com

"Lightness of being" shows us the beauty of growth and decline in nature, captured in an enormous flexible lamp made of steel, carbon, felt and rubber. Pepe's other project, "A restless chairacter", has the look of being overpainted again and again, taking its' inspiration of an old wobbling chair. The chair looks stiff and sturdy at first sight but once you sit on it you notice how flexible it really is. Combining metal and rubber this chair is actually built for wobbling. Pepe is currently working on a wobble bench and a wobble table.
