Matthew J. Tuininga is Professor of Christian Ethics and the History of Christianity at Calvin Theological Seminary in Michigan. He is author or editor of several books, including most recently The Wars of the Lord: The Puritan Conquest of America's First People, which has been an important source for this podcast's series on King Philip's War. This episode is useful context not only for our series on King Philip's War, which is still very much in progress, but also many of the other stories we've told about early New England. We talk about the intersection of religion and war in 17th century Massachusetts, the sheer difficulty of colonialism, the evolution of Puritan evangelism in the decades between the landing of Mayflower and King Philip's War, the slow development of racialist thinking, the rise of racial hostility against Indians first among the settlers on the frontier to the distress of the Puritan elites in Boston, the influence, or not, of the younger generation of settlers and Indians on the coming of the war, whether Uncas of the Mohegans was a great and shrewed leader or merely treacherous, whether King Philip's War was inevitable, the "war guilt," or not, of Samuel Mosely and Edward Hutchinson, the wisdom of John Winthrop, Jr., whether King Philip's War was "worth it" from the perspective of the settlers, the influence of the fog of war on Puritan decisions, KPW as counterinsurgency, historical myths of recent vintage that inflate Christian Indian deaths, the validity of Native American oral tradition as an historical source, and the importance of narrative history in getting people excited about history. In November 1622, the great diplomat Squanto died while leading a trade expedition with his English allies. Only a year had passed since he formed a treaty between the Pilgrims of Plymouth and the indigenous Wampanoag people. While the early years of English-Indian relations were marked by cooperation and accommodation, including the famous Thanksgiving feast, Squanto's passing marked a descent into a period of slowly ramping hostilities, culminating in the first war fought between English settlers and Native Americans. This episode of Gladio Free Europe explores the continuing history of colonial New England, across the 1620s and '30s as the English population rapidly swelled, in large part due to the establish of the new Massachusetts Bay colony which would quickly overshadow Plymouth and the original Pilgrims. While the Pilgrims and Puritans maintained warm relations with some native peoples, such as the great Mohegan chief Uncas, competition over land and resources drew them into conflict with others. Though little known today, the Pequot War would have particularly grave consequences on English-indigenous relations, as it set the precedent for mass slaughter of Indian women and children and ended with the enslavement of the entire Pequot nation. Massachusetts and Connecticut are not remembered as slave societies, but captive Native Americans formed an essential role in the colonial economy and helped normalize the institutions of slavery and racial segregation across the English colonies. Listen to understand how the peace of the First Thanksgiving collapsed into the bloodshed and subjugation that defined the American colonial experience, and try to uncover how the consequences of this turn towards violence shaped our country for the worse for centuries to come.

Welcome back to ParaPower Mapping and the fifth installment of "The Secret History of MasSUSchusetts". It's a surprise double header! This was initially going to be one episode, but I got so obsessed w/ mapping William Pynchon's fur-trading monopoly and decoding the Rosicrucian wordplay in Thomas Pynchon's short story "Under the Rose" that I had to split it into 2. This episode covers:  our cont'd serialization of Winthrop the Younger's alchemical Rosicrucian plantation; the enabling of his settlement of the Pequot lands of Nameaug/ New London by his daddy's war against the Pequot; the complex territorial power dynamics b/w Winthrop Jr., the Mohegan chief Uncas, the Pequot Robin Cassacinamon, & the Connecticut & Massachusetts colonies; Winthrop's attempt to use his alchemedicine practice to consolidate power & respect among Pequot by posing as a "powwaw" (medicine doctor); Uncas's strategic wifing up & the rad counter-revolutionary moment when Robin helped a Pequot woman escape from her enslavement in Winthrop Sr.'s compound in Boston; Uncas & his war band's raid on New London—attempt to assert his power over Pequot villagers & make his tributaries return to his camp; the rare instance where the colonial authorities sided w/ Uncas (an indigenous sachem) instead of English grievances; Winthrop's enslavement of Robin; Uncas's obstruction of Winthrop the Younger's shipments of ore from his Tantiusque mine site... ...a brief Puritanical backlash against alchemy in the 1640s, & Winthrop Jr.'s ally Robert Child's house arrest; Child's dissident faction, which petitioned the colonies to change their enfranchisement laws & push MA + CT to become more religiously tolerant... ...William Pynchon's defense of Robert Child's crew; his "heretical" text The Meritorious Price of Our Redemption; William Pynchon family's gentry status & property-holdings in Chelmsford; his status as churchwarden & "Matthew Yglesias-like hall monitoring" of his fellow villagers (basically he was a pain in everyone's ass); Pynchon fam's decision to join the Puritan emigres to NE for economic reasons; his founding of Roxbury & Springfield; preexisting relationship w/ the Winthrop's; the tragic smallpox epidemic that killed 12,000 indigenous in the Connecticut River Valley in 1633, "clearing the way" for Pynchon's Springfield; Pynchon's land & fur speculation; his role as colonial treasurer; the Springfielders' belief that Connecticut indigenous cursed their settlement by invoking Hobbamock; Pynchon as magistrate & overlord of his village; his prosecution of Hugh & Mary Parsons for witchcraft, which may have acted as a convenient distraction from his heresy case; Pynchon's proto-capitalist system of keeping villagers indebted to him indefinitely so he could work them to death, particularly Hugh Parsons; witch's teats, purple milk, a calf w/ 3 heads, witch-y night terrors, UAP lights over Boston, bloody rain, & other "Memorable Providences"; Mary Parson's shock confession of witchcraft & death in prison; Pynchon's Biblical exegesis of the Atonement; & his return to Old England... ...a mapping of W. Pynchon's powerful descendants; Hawthorne's The House of the Seven Gables & the Pynchon fam's piss-iness that he "slandered" them; a glossing of Thomas Pynchon's early life, matriculation at Cornell, Navy deployment, Greenwich Village connections, & early writing career; a semi-close-reading (possibly schizo) of one of Pynchon's earliest stories, the spy-caper "Under the Rose" (which was repurposed in V. & Slow Learner), especially the rampant Rosicrucian symbolism & wordplay; his use of his colonial heritage; & other speculations... Songs: | Maas — “San Narciso” | | The Insect Trust — “The Eyes of a New York Woman” | | 15 seconds of... Dropkick Murphys — “Shipping Up to Boston” ...for comedic effect | | Sheb Wooley — “The Purple People Eater” | | Radiohead — “We Drink Young Blood” | | Greenfield Leisure — “Too Fat to Frug” |

Happy Belated Thanksgiving, Fabulous Film Fans!  We meant to get this talk in the can sooner but alas! External forces including the mighty Holiday itself prevented us from discussing two seminal works highlighting the struggles of early colonial Americans, with special emphasis on their relationships to the Native American tribes who either assisted or were rebuffed by them: we're talking about Michael Mann's 1992 actioner The Last of The Mohicans, starring Daniel Day Lewis, Madeline Stowe, Wes Studi, Russell Means, Jodhi May, Eric Schweig and Steven Waddington compared to Terrence Malick's 2005 sweeping, meditative romantic epic, The New World starring Colin Farrell, Christopher Plummer, Christian Bale, Q'orianka Kilcher, Wes Studi once again, August Schellenberg, David Thewlis, John Savage, Jonathan Pryce, confusing lookalikes Ben Mendelshon and Noah Taylor in one movie, Eddie Marsen and Ben Chaplin.   My guests this week are once again series regulars Dr. David Johnson, Roseanne Caputi and Alex Roberston. So here are the synopses, once again, deliciously, achingly simple. The Last of The Mohicans takes place in 1757 colonial America as white pilgrim Nathanial Hawkeye and his adopted Mohican relatives, brother Uncas and father Chingachgook continually rescue sisters Cora and Alice Munro from Magua, a vicious Huron warrior hell bent on revenge against the pair's father Colonel Edmund Monroe who burned Magua's village and killed his wife and children. The New World, catalogues the story of Pocahontas, princess of the Powhatan Tribe in Virginia in the year 1607 as she encounters the British Colonists and falls in love with Captain John Smith. Despite saving his life, the princess  is deserted by Smith and finds true and lasting love in the arms of Tobacco Grower John Rolfe.   Both films offer visual and emotional feasts, but which is more refined?Find out!

As the initial party under John Mason was leaving for Saybrook, they were joined by an unlikely group. Original written as a novel by James Fenimore Cooper, we're taking a look back at 1992's, Last of the Mohicans. Starring Daniel Day Lewis, and Madeleine Stowe, tells the story of Uncas and Hawkeye, few of the remaining Mohicans, who have been tasked with helping escort Colonel Edmund Munro's two daughters, back to him, safely. THE LAST (12 minutes) OF THE MOHICANS: Episode 9: Sean Burns (Film Critic at WBUR's The ARTery) and Jen Johans (Film Critic + Screenwriter)

First up, in this two-part episode, I join Staff Writer at WBUR's The ARTery and a Contributing Writer at North Shore Movies - my favourite Bostonian - Sean Burns. Sean recounts hilarious observations of Boston labourers working with Daniel Day-Lewis on the set of The Crucible, before gushing about the beauty of 90s Madeleine Stowe. To close the episode, I join Jen Johans film critic and screenwriter to discuss symphonies of trios echoing throughout the film and the double devastation of Uncas and Alice's death.ABOUT SEAN BURNSSean Burns is a Staff Writer at WBUR's The ARTery and a Contributing Writer at North Shore Movies. He was Philadelphia Weekly's Lead Film Critic from 1999 through 2013 and worked as the Movies Section Contributing Editor at The Improper Bostonian from 2006 until 2014. His reviews, interviews and essays have also appeared in Metro, The Village Voice, The Boston Herald, Nashville Scene, Time Out New York, Philadelphia City Paper, Movie Mezzanine, The House Next Door and RogerEbert.com.A 2013 nominee for the National Society of Film Critics, Burns was a recurring guest on the late David Brudnoy's WBZ 1030 AM radio show, and in 2002 received an award for Excellence in Criticism from the Greater Philadelphia Society of Professional Journalists. His writing has been called "jocular but serious, more like a 1940′s daily reporter pounding out columns on a manual typewriter than a typical 21st-century navel-gazing film critic." Meanwhile, his sisters still tell him that he "swears too much and drives like an old lady."TWITTER: @SEANMBURNSABOUT JEN JOHANSAn avid film buff and three-time national award-winning writer, the only time Jen Johans ever got into trouble in school, was for talking about movies during quiet time. Jen Johans received a BA in Film Studies and was dubbed a walking movie encyclopaedia. Dedicated to sharing her love of film with others, Johans went from working on local festivals to curating and hosting a film discussion series before she launched the first version of her site Film Intuition in her final semester back in 2006.Originally devoted solely to the work of female filmmakers (hence its name), although she branched out as readership grew to cover everything from classic to modern mainstream fare, after twelve years and 2,400 pieces, Jen Johans remains just as committed as ever to reviewing films made by women. Likewise eager to showcase foreign, arthouse, and indie titles often overlooked on other sites, when she isn't writing about or watching movies, chances are she can be found talking about them on Twitter (@FilmIntuition) where there's no such thing as quiet time.TWITTER: @FILMINTUITIONAbout the show: THE LAST (12 minutes) OF THE MOHICANS is a twelve-episode limited podcast series focusing on the climax of the Michael Mann's 1992 epic The Last of the Mohicans. The format of the podcast, which slightly differs from ONE HEAT MINUTE, utilises the entire final twelve-minute climax of Mohicans as a portal to explore the themes of the movie. The show examines the cross-section of political apparatuses, colonial superpower wrangling, and Mr Mann's riff on the "great American hero." The final episode - once again will feature Mr Mann to unpack his intentions with the film in the conception and orchestration of its grand ending.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/donations
