The New York Islanders (29-28-8) host the Florida Panthers (41-23-3) on Sunday night. Ilya Sorokin vs Vitek Vanecek is the expected goaltending matchup. The Isles Morning Minute is presented by Acrisure.
In hour one, Zion Williamson won Hoch and Crowder money on Fat Tuesday. College Baseball is a tricky sport to bet for Crowder. Is the Cleveland Cavaliers the cream of the crop in the NBA, and can they take down the Celtics? Also, the Warriors are 9-1 since acquiring Jimmy Butler, and the Mavericks idea of moving Anthony Davis, and does it have legs? Breaking News Maxx Crosby 3 years extension $106.5 million with the Las Vegas Raiders making him the highest paid non-QB, and Hoch and Crowder wonder where the Dolphins mismanage their salary cap. The memory of the Canes football team losing to FIU at LoanDepot Park is over (according to Hoch) after the Canes baseball defeated FIU 7-3 at LoanDepot Park. Sandy Alcantra will be on innings restrictions for the Marlins. Hoch is having difficulty pronouncing the Panthers new goalie Vitek Vanecek, acquired from the San Jose Sharks. Zach Gelb agrees with Hoch that Hoch is the healthiest member of the show after Crowder broke both his feet last week. Zach Gelb notices the Warriors hot streak since trading for Jimmy Butler. Is Gelb gonna end up for the Lakers to make a deep run in the playoffs? Does Gelb think Aaron Rodgers will end up with the New York Giants, or do the Giants trade up to get Cam Ward?

Technically, what's Askarov have to do to reach elite NHL status? But before we get to Kevin, let's talk about the San Jose Sharks' return from the 4 Nations break and more! (2:30) Askarov has a minor lower-body injury, why might some rest be good for him? Nikolai Kovalenko made waves with his comments to a Russian podcast about Ryan Warsofsky. Our thoughts on Kovalenko's clarification and how Warsofsky treats Russian players. (9:00) Nico Sturm doesn't think that he's going to be with the San Jose Sharks for long. What did we think of Warsofsky's decision to start Alex Wennberg in OT against the Jets? (33:30) And now, Kevin Woodley! (1:04:08) Does Askarov have the potential to be a Connor Hellebuyck-level goaltender for the San Jose Sharks? What's he got to do to get there? What are Kevin's perceptions of Askarov's antics, like his celebrations? (1:15:40) What's the value of keeping Askarov in the AHL this year? Will Alexandar Georgiev or Vitek Vanecek pair with Askarov next season? (1:29:30) Where does Woodley rank Askarov among the top young goalie prospects in the league? (1:35:10) How does Kevin view the work of the San Jose Sharks' current goaltending regime, director Evgeni Nabokov, goaltending coach Thomas Speer, and goalie scout Ryan Miller?
Despite an outstanding effort from San Jose's Vitek Vanecek, the Jets extend their win streak to 10 games with a 2-1 final result. Heartbreak and pain are what Ian and Jules talk about in San Jose's last minute come from ahead overtime loss to the Winnipeg Jets. How much swagger can good goaltending give you? What have we seen recently from Andrew Poturalski, Shakir Mukhamadullin, and Collin Graf? (1:53:50) Smith has had an up-and-down rookie campaign, how does Colby see it? Also, Cohen sees the Celebrini vs. Connor Bedard the same way that he did in the summer! (02:14:00)

The San Jose Sharks might have just traded for their goaltender of the future! Sheng and Keegan share their initial reactions to acquiring Yaroslav Askarov from the Nashville Predators. In a six-piece deal, the San Jose Sharks are getting Askarov, a 2025 third-round pick (via the Colorado Avalanche), and prospect Nolan Burke for prospects David Edstrom and Magnus Chrona, and a 2025 first-round pick (via the Vegas Golden Knights, top-10 protected). Both Keegan and Sheng love this trade for the Sharks and GM Mike Grier on many levels. Why? Regardless, what are the concerns about Askarov? There are real questions. Also, is Askarov the best goaltending prospect in San Jose Sharks history? What about incumbent goalies Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek? How would we grade Grier's work as Sharks GM over the last two years? We talk about that and more!
Kaapo Kahkonen is set to become an unrestricted free agent. He actually impressed me during his short stint this season. He was acquired by the New Jersey Devils during the trade deadline. The team gave up Vitek Vanecek for his services. Since his production was respectable, Tom Fitzgerald might consider re-signing him.Interview soundbite: Kaapo Kahkonen (Courtesy New Jersey Devils)Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…
This week on the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast, we welcome ESPN senior NHL writer Greg Wyshynski! Greg recently made the case for Mike Grier for GM of the Year, and we had to dive into that, given some of the criticism we've heard recently about Grier (48:15). But before we get to Greg, we start our show with just how important it is that the San Jose Sharks have finished dead-last in the NHL, securing the best odds at the first-overall pick in the 2024 NHL Entry Draft (2:27).We cover some of the Will Smith ELC signing scenarios (7:40).Sheng and Keegan discuss some of the San Jose Sharks games this past week, including a shellacking by the Oilers, a win for Devin Cooley, and much more (14:18). We also go into why Danil Gushchin, Jack Thompson, and Georgi Romanov were able to get call-ups this late in the year.Luke Kunin has been maligned by the analytics folks all year, but Sheng wanted to share some of the league-wide sentiment regarding Kunin's analytics (23:45).The San Jose Sharks and Barracuda came out with their 2023-24 awards. Who did Sheng choose for the Sharks/Cuda, and who does Keegan think should have won? (34:30)Finally, Sheng shares some of his observations from watching Filip Bystedt live. (43:05)And now, Greg Wyshynski! (48:15)We recorded this in early April, by the way, before everything happened with the Arizona Coyotes and their move to Salt Lake City.Greg's praise for Mike Grier as GM of Year on the Mar. 27 episode of “The Jeff Marek Show” really turned some heads around the NHL (49:00). https://sanjosehockeynow.com/san-jose-sharks-grier-gm-year-links/So what happens if the San Jose Sharks don't win No. 1? Would Greg still think of Grier as GM of the Year? (54:20)Keegan asks the question, what is Sharks' deserve-o-meter for the No. 1 pick? (57:13)There's lots of Arizona Coyotes' talk here that is outdated...so listen if you want, but understand that the speculation did not end up correct.Sheng wonders about the national perception of the San Jose Sharks' rebuild and the Tomas Hertl trade. (1:06:10)Greg is a famous New Jersey Devils fan, so what does he think of the Timo Meier trade, and Mackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek in goal? (1:13:35)How can the San Jose Sharks avoid protracted rebuilds like the Buffalo Sabres and Ottawa Senators are dealing with now, and the Edmonton Oilers dealt with before 2015? (1:19:10)When does Greg think the Sharks will make the playoffs again? (1:24:15) ★ Support this podcast ★
Tomas Hertl to the Vegas Golden Knights?!?We react to all of the San Jose Sharks' Trade Deadline moves, and talk about why we like the Hertl trade for the Golden Knights. But before we get there, we talk about Logan Couture ruling himself out for the rest of the season, a perfect way to cap off perhaps the worst day in San Jose Sharks history. (1:12)Sheng describes a surreal day around Sharks Ice.We get in deep about the Hertl trade, both the on and off the ice implications and emotions. (13:43)The Hertl trade, obviously, was the star of the show, but we also talked about all of the Sharks' moves today and yesterday. Why we had “no notes” for the Anthony Duclair trade? (51:45)Keegan really liked the Kaapo Kahkonen trade: Why was it a sensible swap for Vitek Vanecek? (57:05)Sheng's favorite San Jose Sharks' Trade Deadline move was Radim Simek for Klim Kostin. (1:08:15)Why didn't Nikita Okhotiuk pan out for the San Jose Sharks? (1:15:45)Finally, we end with a thought about Devin Cooley. (1:20:45)We grade the San Jose Sharks' 2024 Trade Deadline. It's been almost a year since the New Jersey Devils obtained Timo Meier from the San Jose Sharks. It seemed like a good fit initially, but this season has been a struggle for Meier. He signed an eight-year extension over the summer, and people are saying it might be the worst contract in recent Devils history. However, people might be too quick to judge. Isaac Poulter was called up to the Devils while Akira Schmid was sent back down to Utica. Vitek Vanecek was moved to the injury reserve.Follow & Subscribe on all Podcast platforms…

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about the Capitals most recent loss to the St Louis Blues in St Louis. This is quite an about face from the Capitals previous game against the Blues on Thursday evening where the Capitals defeated the Blues. The Blue s didn't allow for much opportunity to get the Capitals offense going. Evgeny Kuznetsov was demoted to the 4th line and Nic Dowd was promoted to the top line. Kuzy has struggles with consistency this entire season. Nic Dowd has been one of the bright sports for the Capitals. The Capitals sign Aliaksei Protas to a five-year extension with their eyes on the present and future as Protas has been a big contributor to the Capitals offense this season. IN the final segment Dan talks about Clay Stevenson and how he's ranked number one in all of the AHL in net. Clay Stevenson made 28 saves to earn his American Hockey League-leading sixth shutout of the season and set a club rookie record as the Hershey Bears (31-7-0-2) picked up a 1-0 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (20-14-5-0) in front of a crowd of 10,628 on Saturday night at GIANT Center. Stevenson's shutout moved him past Vitek Vanecek (2016-17) and Ron Hextall (1985-86) for sole possession of the franchise single-season record for shutouts by a rookie netminder.Join our LOCKED ON CAPS INSIDERS texting community and chat with host Dan Holmi any time by clicking this link: https://joinsubtext.com/lockedoncapitals Dan provides one on one's, breaking news, show previews, Caps breakdowns and the very latest from your 2018 Stanley Cup winning Washington Capitals.
