Tez and Chip get to talk to legendary broadcast journalist Ray Suarez about his new book, We Are Home, and how the current economic situation looks to Americans. We also discuss the economic impact of Trump's attacks on immigration and the rest of the world. Plus we are in a constitutional crisis, the courts may not be able to prevent Trump from banishing US citizens from the country. Texas is having trouble with tribles, and the penguins strike back against Trump's tariffs.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/chipchat--2780807/support.

In the debate about immigration, the voices of immigrants are often left out of the conversation. For his new book, “We Are Home,” veteran journalist Ray Suarez collected a series of oral histories from people who have recently arrived in America. He centers immigrants like Samir, who was born in Kenya of Yemini descent and moved to suburban Maryland as a teenager and Nelson Castillo, a successful immigration attorney who never wanted to leave his native El Salvador. With this book, Suarez hopes that people will “listen to this person's story of how they got here, how they got over, and how much they love their country today.” Suarez joins us to talk about not only why people immigrate, but who they are. Guests: Ray Suarez, journalist; author of "We Are Home: Becoming American in the 21st Century, An Oral History"

Over the course of a long career in journalism, he has been the host of Al Jazeera America's daily news program Inside Story, Chief National Correspondent for The PBS NewsHour, and host of NPR's Talk of the Nation. He has been a John McCloy visiting professor of American Studies at Amherst College. Get his new book ! We Are Home Becoming American in the 21st Century: an Oral History From the veteran broadcaster and historian comes a richly reported portrait of the newest Americans, immigrants from all over the globe who are living all across the country, filled with their own voices. We are a nation of immigrants, never more than now. In recent decades, the numbers have skyrocketed, thanks to people coming from many continents—especially Asia, Africa, and South America. Just like their predecessors, they face countless obstacles, including political hatred. And yet, just like their predecessors, they work hard. They persist. And they become us. The newest Americans are poorly understood and frequently presented only in stereotypes. Veteran journalist, broadcaster, and interviewer Ray Suarez has criss-crossed the country to speak to new Americans from all corners of the globe, and to record their stories. This portrait of our newest citizens is full of their own, compelling voices. It's a story as old as the country, yet each new wave of arrivals tells that classic story in new and crucially important ways. Since launching Brooklyn Boy Productions in 2019, he has created content for public radio and television, The Washington Post, The Independent (London), The Philadelphia Inquirer, Pew Research, Knowable, “America in One Room,” Hispanics in Philanthropy, Slate, The Nation, Hearst TV, AlterNet, CityPaper, The Annie E. Casey Foundation, the American Communities Project, and the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, among others. In his long and distinguished career, Ray has also hosted NPR's “Talk of the Nation,” Al Jazeera America's daily news program “Inside Story;” and been Chief National Correspondent for PBS NewsHour. His published books include “The Holy Vote: The Politics of Faith in America,” “The Old Neighborhood: What We Lost in the Great Suburban Migration,” and the companion volume to the PBS documentary series “Latino Americans.” His most recent book, “We Are Home,” traces the emerging demographics of the US in the 21st century through in-depth interviews with immigrants from wide-ranging origins, eras and experiences. Ray has been a frequent presenter, speaker and moderator at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and a featured speaker at the Aspen Ideas Festival. He holds a BA in African History from New York University and an MA in Social Sciences from the University of Chicago, where he was a Benton Fellow. He also holds 15 honorary doctorates from colleges and universities across America. A native of Brooklyn, New York, Ray is based in Philadelphia and Washington, DC. He and his wife, Carole, are parents to three adult children. Mention immigration at any gathering these days and it's likely to generate strong emotions. The images of repeated humanitarian crises at the border tug at the heartstrings of some and enrage others. It can be hard to have a conversation about the issue, as divisive as it is today. Immigration Reporter Lauren Villagran sits down with veteran broadcaster and author Ray Suarez to have a more nuanced conversation about the issues. Can we apply a historical lens to our identification as a "nation of immigrants" to create the space for a more nuanced conversation? Ray's new book "We Are Home," an oral history of new immigrants, hits bookshelves this April.
Samantha Ramirez-Herrera is a radical creator and a trailblazer in every sense of the word. Born in Mexico with a legacy lived, made, and growing in the US, she has become “her ancestor's wildest dreams”—something I heard her describe from stage in the mountains of Montana. Sam is who I go to—as my North Star—to track the narratives being created in media that support the movements that support the people. Her work is provocative in that it represents resistance and progress all in the same sweep. Her mantra is “F-ck fear.” And, to top it all off (not even kinda), Sam is an Emmy Award-Winning filmmaker, a self-made entrepreneur, and the founder & CEO of OffThaRecord—a creative studio with the mantra, “We are creatives who give a damn.” She is a DREAMer who grew up in the United States undocumented, but what we learn without hesitation from her is that there is not a single DREAMER who's out here wasting their opportunity. She says, “I am labeled as a DREAMer, but I am way more than that. I am a DOer. And I am a chain breaker for my family.” I'll take a DEEP breath to that one. It's that quote, and all the stories she's lived to date, that brought us the name for this episode: “BEYOND DREAMER.” This conversation is a repeat listen for those moments when we need to remember that we can make new rules for ourselves, our communities, our society, our future. It's not possible to leave this listen without a hunger for equity, a determination to “fuck fear,” (visualize those words in Old English, please) and a drive to love yourself radically. Get pen and paper. Your hands are about to be busy grabbing lines like this: “Being an immigrant in this country is difficult. Because every day you're attacked with words… and if you don't love yourself radically, if you don't love yourself in a revolutionary way, they can break you. But I choose to be unbreakable. And I choose to love myself.” - Samantha Ramirez-Herrera WORKS:- CEO & Founder, OffThaRecord—a creative studio with the mantra “We are creatives who give a damn.”- CIVICS FOR THE CULTURE—a campaign launched by Fair Fight Action (founded in 2018 by Stacey Abrams) to mobilize young people of color 18-35 to vote and be civically engaged.- SEEDS OF RESILIENCE—Sam and her team at Off Tha Record worked with Food Well Alliance to uplift the stories of Black growers around Atlanta through a 4 part series titled “Seed of Resilience”. They discussed land access, growing food in the city, and the significance of supporting Black-led agriculture -- particularly in the South. - WE ARE HOME—a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-generational coalition calling on the Biden administration and Congress to take immediate action to protect millions of immigrants who call this country home and end the cruelty of our interior detention and deportation system.- UNDERDOG DREAMS—OffThaRecord executed storytelling and video productions for Underdog Dreams, a non-profit organization working on revolutionizing the flawed child welfare system.- Keynote Speaker, where she describes herself as "just a Brown immigrant pursuing all of my wildest dreams and hoping to inspire others to do the same." Tools You'll Get From this Episode:- How to transcend the lies of stigma- How to make new rules for yourself- What it really looks like to create the path to equity- Tools to redefine yourself in alignment with your true identity and ACTIONS- Contemplations to witness and honor the hardships and privilege people individually carry and inspiration to help guide you to work through yours- Stories that motivate you to embrace your actual potential - Permission to love yourself radically- Reminders that strengthen courage in the face of fear- Everyday practices we can do knowing traumatic events are happening DAILY without time to process- Reminders to see the way social media manipulates the mind. Sam talks about “appreciating the moments between the posts.”- Reminders to protect our mental space and our energy- Compassion around how addictive social media is- We hear revealing stories that remind us to protect our mental health - Strong awarenesses around what happens when we normalize trauma rather than carrying for our mental health proactively - Absolute unending permission to curse. Sam and I joke about how we have to keep it quiet the first four segments because it's made for radio LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT: BETTER is recorded on the unceded and ancestral territory of the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ and Sḵwx̱wú7mesh speaking peoples, the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, and has been stewarded by them since time immemorial. Darren Binder – The Truman Charities Podcast: A Community of Caring with Jamie Truman Episode 40 Darren Binder. Darren is a co-founder of City Dogs Rescue & City Kitties and lived in D.C. for 20 years prior to moving to Bend, Oregon two years ago for a new position. Darren was motivated to start the rescue in 2011 after seeing a plea on Facebook about a beautiful Labrador retriever puppy named Bentley who was going to be euthanized at a high-kill shelter in Georgia. Darren and his husband Dave Liedman quickly acted to raise funds to rescue Bentley, who became CDCK's first rescue dog. Once in DC, this friendly guy soon found his future adopter while walking through Dupont Circle with an “adopt me” vest on. It became abundantly clear that the lives of so many other wonderful animals could also be transformed if resources could be mobilized to relocate them to a place where they would receive much more visibility. Hence, City Dogs Rescue (now City Dogs & City Kitties) was born. Darren serves as Senior Vice President & Chief Legal and Risk Officer as well as Corporate Secretary for a health system in Oregon. In his role, Darren oversees the Legal, Internal Audit, Compliance, and Information Security Departments, and is a member of the health system's Executive Care Team. He was recently appointed by Governor Kate Brown to serve as the industry representative on the Executive Committee of the Central Oregon Regional Solutions Advisory Committee. He is also a member of the Oregon Association of Hospitals and Health System's Health Equity Advisory Taskforce. Listen to this uplifting Truman Charities episode with Darren Binder about City Dog & City Kitties Rescue, and why he decided to create this organization. Here is what to expect on this week's show: - How a little dog named Bentley inspired Darren and his husband to create City Dogs & City Kitties. - Their Capital Campaign and why Nationals player Ryan Zimmerman and his wife Heather are so excited about it. - Their plans to pay tribute to Betty White by creating a Betty White room in their new center. - How you can foster or adopt one of their rescues. Joining us on this episode are Reverend Nancy Frausto and Dr. Miguel de la Torre. Nancy is an Associate Rector at St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Long Beach, CA. She is a founding member of the Sanctuary Task Force for the Diocese of Los Angeles, and a clergy leader with LA Voice (a Faith in Action affiliate). A previous guest of this podcast, Miguel, is an author, scholar-activist, and Professor of Social Ethics and Latinx Studies at Iliff Seminary in Denver, CO. In this episode, we examined how immigration justice is connected to just about every other organizing issue. We asked the question of “who is my neighbor?” and explored the root causes of pain in our communities. We have waited a few months to share this conversation with you. This episode was recorded in early April during our Keeping Faith Week of Prophetic Action. We are intentionally releasing this episode on the week of the 9th anniversary of DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals policy. Rev. Nancy is among a host of DACA recipients who are organizers and faith leaders with our immigrant rights program, LA RED. Also timely is the fact that this is the second week of the Fast for Freedom. LA RED and our partners with the We Are Home campaign have organized this monthlong fast to call on lawmakers to create a pathway to citizenship for essential workers and undocumented immigrants in any reconciliation package going to Congress.

This is an interview with Rev. Craig B. Mousin, an Adjunct Faculty member of the DePaul University College of Law and the Grace School of Applied Diplomacy. This podcast links the loss of homes felt by many of the freed slaves after the Civil War, including George Floyd's great-great grandfather, with the loss of home many refugees face when forced to flee their nations due to state sanctioned violence and the consequences of the breakdown of the rule of law. We face challenges both at our borders, but also when we contribute to the conditions that force families to flee their homes. We need to address ways to provide the rule of law and justice for all. The story of George Floyd's family history and the loss of his great-great grandfather's 500 acres comes from Toluse Olorunnipa and Griff Witte, “Born with two strikes, How systemic racism shaped Floyd's life and hobbled his ambition,” https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/national/george-floyd-america/systemic-racism/ Senn High School, located in the Edgewater neighborhood of Chicago, is one of the most diverse high schools in the nation.
