Today's episode introduces two seemingly opposite topics that actually have surprising overlap -- Ignatian spirituality and the beliefs of the German Christian movement. Both topics hold much wisdom and challenge for us here in the Year of our Lord 2025. We begin with the Welcoming Prayer by Father Thomas Keating and discuss the Ignatian Examen alongside the mindset of the German Christians in 1933. What might God be speaking to us today through our own consolations and desolations?

Feb. 9th, 2025 Devoted to Prayer Self-reliance is often celebrated as a mark of success and maturity in our culture today Acts 2:42-44 The Believers Form a Community 42All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord's Supper), and to prayer. 43A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. When we prioritize self-reliance, we miss out on the richness of what God intended and designed for us to experience. James 1:22 But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. Philippians 2:3-5 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset of Christ Jesus. Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another. Postures of prayer: I should pray I must pray Our Rhythms: Engage Push Exhaustion Jesus Rhythms: Engage Withdraw Refill George Muller “I saw more clearly than ever, that the first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day was, to have my soul happy in the Lord. The first thing to be concerned about was not, how I might serve the Lord, how I might glorify the Lord... but how I might get my soul into a happy state, and how my inner man may be nourished. I saw that the most important thing I had to do was to give myself to the reading of the Word of God and to meditation of it.” John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. Isaiah 37:14 Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. 15And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: Psalm 55:22 Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you, he will never let the righteous be shaken. 1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Matthew 26 (Garden of Gethsemane) Jesus gave God his feelings Jesus gave God his desires Jesus gave God his trust Prayer isn't a play to be good, it's a place to be honest 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 16Always be joyful. 17Never stop praying. 18Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. The Welcoming Prayer by Father Thomas Keating Welcome, welcome, welcome. I welcome everything that comes to me today because I know it's for my healing. I welcome all thoughts, feelings, emotions, persons, situations, and conditions. I let go of my desire for power and control. I let go of my desire for affection, esteem, approval and pleasure. Welcome to season 23! This season we are using the framework of the enneagram, and in particular the ways the 3 instinctual subtypes impact each enneagram number, to help people do the necessary inner work of knowing themselves and managing anxiety, triggers, and stuck patterns so that they can lead others well. This season, we are moving beyond the basics of describing each number type to look at our instincts and what motivates our behaviors. Special guest, Erin Baute, a leadership behavior strategist with over 20 years of experience in behavior change and professional development, joins us all season long to help us do this important work.   Today, Ruth kicks off the season with a solo episode. She gives an introduction to the season ahead, an overview of how she uses the enneagram as a tool, in conjunction with the Holy Spirit, for self-examination and confession, and some guidance for interacting with the enneagram well. We conclude this episode with the Welcoming Prayer, a prayer Ruth often uses as a way to pray into the new things we discover about ourselves as we work with the enneagram.   Mentioned in the episode: Erin Baute, our guest this season. You are God's chosen people. You are holy and dearly loved. So put on tender mercy and kindness as if they were your clothes. Don't be proud. Be gentle and patient. Put up with one another. Forgive one another if you are holding something against someone. Forgive, just as the Lord forgave you. And over all these good things put on love. Love holds them all together perfectly as if they were one (Colossians 3:12-14). Contemporary Testimony: Our World Belongs to God: The church is a gathering of forgiven sinners called to be holy. Saved by the patient grace of God, we deal patiently with others and together confess our need for grace and forgiveness (39). Imagine with me: what does the typical Christian look like? How does this person behave? What stands out as the driving motivation of their life? Hang on to these questions and images for a moment. Yesterday's Hamilton Spectator included an opinion piece by Michael Cohen. It was more of a rant. It began with Canadian census data which indicates that the number of people claiming to be Christian is steadily declining. Michael wondered why Christian leaders are alarmed by this. “There are seemingly endless stories of abuse, examples of hypocrisy, gruesome tales of historic oppression, anti-vaccination hysteria, mobs proclaiming their faith as they scream support for Donald Trump…” he writes. He does not want to be identified with this expression of Christianity. Many who think like him refuse to check Christian on the census form. I've ranted about this myself. And then I wonder if I am partially at fault. Maybe I have not lived grace well enough. Maybe I have not preached grace well enough. I've long believed that there is only one topic for preaching, and that is grace, God's grace. And the church needs to hear it now more than ever. Passages like our text frequently catch me up short. Why are they not front and centre in our churches? It tells us what Christians should look like: merciful, kind, gentle, patient, quick to forgive, not holding grudges, loving. When others think Christian, this is the image that ought to come to their minds. The Contemporary Testimony gets it right: “saved by the patient grace of God, we deal patiently with others and together confess our need for grace and forgiveness”. Why, if this is our confession, is it not deeply engrained in our communities? As I was growing up, each Sunday evening I heard a sermon based on the Heidelberg Catechism which begins with these brilliant words, “I am not my own, but belong-body and soul, in life and in death-to my faithful Savior Jesus Christ…Because I belong to him, Christ, by his Holy Spirit, assures me of eternal life and makes me wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for him.” This catches the content of our text quite well. Once we know that we are God's chosen people, our lives can begin to change. Again, I wonder, why are Christians not known for this. Who wouldn't want to be part of this kind of community? What do we do about it? There is only one thing to do. Begin at home, in one's own life. This week's prayer practice is called the ‘Welcoming Prayer.' It invites us to be mindful of all the times we face temptations to grasp for ‘security, affection or control'. And when faced with such, we then surrender ourselves to Jesus, believing that he offers all the security and affection that we need, and we give control of ourselves to him. We release ourselves to Jesus and welcome him in. We are the ones who can change the image other folks have of Christianity.

In this teaching episode, I share with you the process that I guide my coaching clients through when emotions get constricted or feel hard to let ourselves experience. I offer a step-by-step process for experiencing our feelings so that we are not pushing them down into our subconscious and causing a slow build-up of raw emotions that eventually results in some variation of feeling completely overwhelmed. At the end of this teaching episode, I also share with you an eight-minute guided meditation called The Welcoming Prayer. When life is busy and crazy, we often end up living for ourselves, reacting out of our own fears and anxieties. In this episode of Practicing Presence Pastor Cullen and Clayton discuss the Welcoming Prayer as a piece of our how to pray series. Welcoming God into our fears and anxieties is the topic of the spiritual formation podcast episode. Happy Listening! Clayton Instagram: @jcware99 Facebook: Clayton Ware Our Identity: WellHouse Church is a church seeking to reimagine what the church is. Too many people have been hurt by a church in their past, because church has become something that it was never meant to be: an event or building that we attend. At WellHouse, we believe that the people of God are the church and that the love of God should be experienced through the people of God. So, WellHouse has returned to a New Testament expression of our faith by meeting in homes and dedicating ourselves to: the teaching of the scriptures, the fellowship of the believers, the breaking of bread together, and praying together for one another. We are focused on being a genuine expression of Christian hospitality and service to our community and the people of our community. At WellHouse we want to be a place where people can Be Real, Be Relational, and Be Restored. As our leadership was dreaming up this vision, we looked at Scripture and saw that the earliest expressions of the church met in homes and it was rare that all of the believers were together. Today, most churches have found themselves spending a large portion of their budget on buildings that they rarely use. Not WellHouse. We want to keep our overhead low so we can spend our money on the things that matter, being the hands and feet of Jesus. So, we meet in the homes of our members for the majority of our meetings. Once per month, we all come together at a rented facility to devote our selves together as the whole church for the purpose of worshipping God together.

Have you ever spent some time alone in quiet, centering yourself, and found some peace, only for it to be gone as soon as ordinary life comes knocking on your door? We can be in a vicious cycle in our lives where we center ourselves and gain a sense of peace and clarity, and then something triggers us and we erupt – however that might look like for us. Carl Jung says that 10% of our thoughts and actions are conscious, and 90% are unconscious. The problem is we don' t deal with and heal the things going on in the unconscious. Welcoming Prayer is a way of pulling out those unconscious parts of our selves by focusing on what is happening in our body – tension, pain, discomfort, other sensations – seeing what thoughts and emotions come up as we focus on that tension in our body, and then letting go of our inner motivations around that internal or external situation. The Guest House This being human in a guest house Every morning a new arrival. A joy, a depression, a meanness, Some momentary awareness comes As an unexpected visitor. Welcome and entertain them all Even if they're a crowd of sorrows, Who violently sweep your house empty of its furniture. Still, treat each guest honorably, He may be cleaning you out for some new delight. The dark thought, the shame, the malice, Meet them at door laughing and invite them in. Be grateful for whoever comes, Because each has been sent As a guide from beyond. -Rumi Resource: Welcome Prayer, Consent on the Go; Contemplative Outreach Publication Support this podcast https://anchor.fm/angie-winn --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/angie-winn/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/angie-winn/support

The Welcoming Prayer is a helpful guide for us utilize to acknowledge our emotions, rather than avoiding them or trying to suppress them and to invite God's presence and power into, so we can experience wholeness through the action and power of the holy spirit. I let go of my desire for survival and security. I let go of my desire to change any situation, condition, person or myself. I open myself to the love and presence of God and God's action within. Gospel is bigger than the "plan of Salvation" or bigger than the question of "where am I going to go when I die? Heaven or Hell?" The story of the Bible in big picture is to restore the original “Garden of Eden”, where we were able to walk with God daily, intimately, unashamed. Jesus came to restore that intimacy for all of us. Jesus breaks down tribalism. We look at denominations, and doctrine, and how we tend to leave tension earlier than we should. Check out the Welcoming Prayer, posted on Episode 6 post on www.desirelinepodcast.com/listen.  Contemplative prayer connected to focus, and Philippians 4:6+7. Cultural understanding of individualized culture that we live in in the West, and using Susette's experience with her husbands family in Mexican-American culture in examples of family centered/collectivist culture that's closer to 1st century Judaism. How have we interpreted the idea of salvation through our Western eyes, while trying to live by the Bible, who's authors do not come from a Western American perspective culturally? “Despite its protests to the contrary, modern Christianity has become willy-nilly the religion of the state and the economic status quo. Because it has been so exclusively dedicated to incanting anemic souls into heaven, it has, by a kind of ignorance, been made the tool of much earthly villainy. It has, for the most part, stood silently by, while a predatory economy has ravaged the world, destroyed its natural beauty and health, divided and plundered its human communities and households. Anger is good, or can be good for us, because it points to things that are "under the hood" or emotions that are deeper than we sometimes realize. Vulnerable emotions like being sad, anxiety, fear, worry, and shame can sit underneath anger. Brandon + Susette talk about some of their experiences with their own anger. How does anger effect your parenting, and how to kids experience their parents anger. Trauma is a great way to introduce the concept of anger in our body/brain (limbic system, amygdala, hippocampus, anterior cingulate gyrus), check out Episode 3: Trauma + Hope to hear more about how our brain functions re: trauma, anger, + anxiety. Anger is a secondary emotion. We act with anger to express those underneath emotions: shame, fear, sadness. We can control the anger better than we can the sadness/fear. As we talk about how anger is accepted and received in different cultures-- do you agree with this? How does your cultural background experience anger? From Eph 4: The emotion of anger is just the emotion. The behavior of anger is what we need to be careful of. Resentment vs. Rage. The feel of tension underneath the surface can make it hard to tell what's happening for people that we love. Taking offense should not be part of the Christian life. It allows the angry feeling to take root in you, instead of moving through you. We have to fight shame sometimes to look "under the hood" with our angry feelings. Using Romans 8:1, feeling free of condemnation + shame and invited into the whole truth of why we respond the way that we do. Grief + Lament can be part of the process to move through anger. Lament is acknowledging anger, sadness + grief in God's presence, in order to acknowledge reality of our world + lives. Practicing Empathy is a way to understand the grace that's already given to us (unconditional love from Jesus, and power that He gives us through the Holy Spirit), and to remember that someone that you're feeling angry towards also deserves the grace and love from Jesus (again, see Eph 4). Assertiveness, aggression, passive-aggression, and passiveness are ways to respond to anger, but the goal is to be ASSERTIVE (care about the other person, and care about yourself). Truth in love in your relationships. We all have work to do in the balance of finding truth in love. The Desire Line: When I'm angry, ask: What am I really seeking? What do I need? What's underneath this resentment, anger, offended feeling? What kind of comfort, leading, or direction do you need in order to look at your anger + the emotions underneath? What practice can you try to be ready to look at the truth of what's happening for you? Bible passages used:  Eph 4:26 Psalm 4:4 Eph 4 Romans 8:1 Check out www.desirelinepodcast.com, under the "Listen" tab to download an exercise called "Welcoming Prayer." The Welcoming Prayer is one way to TRUST Jesus in the midst of wanting these fundamental needs. It prompts us to invite (or welcome) Jesus into the parts of our lives where we crave Affection/Love; Security + Safety or Being in Power (Control).
