Feb. 9th, 2025 Devoted to Prayer Self-reliance is often celebrated as a mark of success and maturity in our culture today Acts 2:42-44 The Believers Form a Community 42All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord's Supper), and to prayer. 43A deep sense of awe came over them all, and the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders. 44And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. When we prioritize self-reliance, we miss out on the richness of what God intended and designed for us to experience. James 1:22 But don't just listen to God's word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. Philippians 2:3-5 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset of Christ Jesus. Hebrews 10:24-25 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another. Postures of prayer: I should pray I must pray Our Rhythms: Engage Push Exhaustion Jesus Rhythms: Engage Withdraw Refill George Muller “I saw more clearly than ever, that the first great and primary business to which I ought to attend every day was, to have my soul happy in the Lord. The first thing to be concerned about was not, how I might serve the Lord, how I might glorify the Lord... but how I might get my soul into a happy state, and how my inner man may be nourished. I saw that the most important thing I had to do was to give myself to the reading of the Word of God and to meditation of it.” John 14:27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. Isaiah 37:14 Hezekiah received the letter from the messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the Lord and spread it out before the Lord. 15And Hezekiah prayed to the Lord: Psalm 55:22 Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you, he will never let the righteous be shaken. 1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. Matthew 26 (Garden of Gethsemane) Jesus gave God his feelings Jesus gave God his desires Jesus gave God his trust Prayer isn't a play to be good, it's a place to be honest 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 16Always be joyful. 17Never stop praying. 18Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. The Welcoming Prayer by Father Thomas Keating Welcome, welcome, welcome. I welcome everything that comes to me today because I know it's for my healing. I welcome all thoughts, feelings, emotions, persons, situations, and conditions. I let go of my desire for power and control. I let go of my desire for affection, esteem, approval and pleasure. I let go of my desire for survival and security. I let go of my desire to change any situation, condition, person or myself. I open myself to the love and presence of God and God's action within. Amen.

In Acts 2, the Spirit formed the early church in such a way that they exhibited healthy characteristics for a church: Together. Everything in common. They shared with anyone. 42They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43A sense of awe came over everyone, and the apostles performed many wonders and signs. 44All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45Selling their possessions and goods, they shared with anyone who was in need. 46With one accord they continued to meet daily in the temple courts and to break bread from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart, 47praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

“A Girl and a Woman in a Mess” Mark 5:21-43A girl and a woman had encounters with Jesus, and they found that He had the power to deal with even the biggest and messiest problems in their lives and that He didn't turn them away because of them. As we encounter Jesus, we find these same things are true of Him for us as well.________________________________________________________Encounters with Jesus (Lent)Throughout the Gospels, people had amazing encounters with Jesus. These were ordinary people who were forever changed by their encounters with Him. With this series, as we walk through the season of Lent, we'll see how these people were changed by Jesus and recognize that through our own encounters with Jesus, He can change us, too. With this series, we will also refocus our hearts and minds on Jesus, on who he was, what he taught, and the meaning of his death, as we prepare to celebrate his resurrection on Easter Sunday.Orchard Community Church8180 Telephone RdVentura CA 93004www.OrchardVentura.orgContact us at Info@OrchardVentura.orgOrchard's Streaming and Song Select CCLI# 160190

A (surprising) crossword by Simeon Siegel, most noteworthy for a profusion of parentheses in the grid, all part of an intricate theme that we delve into in today's episode. We covered quite a few clues in the podcast, but alas, did not quite have room for 36A, Shrunken snack item, PRUNE; 15A, Like 80% of the Arabian Peninsula, SAUDI; and the (for Mike, at least) relatively obscure 43A, Dried version of the almost-ripe poblano, ANCHO -- at least until now!Contact Info:We love listener mail! A new candidate for the Midnight Society, insufferable San Francisco hipster Robert Louis Stevenson, attempts to impress the Pals with the story of Henry Jekyll, a Victorian psychiatrist. On the steamship home from a business trip, Jekyll's seemingly chance meeting with a certain Edward Hyde will change his perception of reality forever. In a twist so unexpected that nobody even knows it's a twist, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde turn out to be the same person! An adrenaline-fueled social satire of mischief, mayhem and soup.Content notes: swearing, discussion of colonialism and colonial violence, mention of death, murder and cannibalism, guns, explosions, themes of mental illness and dissociative identity. This week, Mark and Sam are joined by Clare Reeves, and they have a play with the different ways you can read an audio book script, and a commercial/promo type script. There's a discussion on what kind of person you need to be to record audio books, and our question this week is all about how long it takes to get used to the sound of your own voice. We'd love you to have a read of one of this week's scripts and send it to us on mp3 to podcast@britishvoiceover.co.uk - it might make it into one of upcoming episodes!Script 1‘In fifty yards you will have reached your destination,' advised the Satnav, the most valuable tool in her armoury. She began to peer at street numbers, counting them down on the gates and walls. Slightly to her surprise, number 43A was quite different from the rest. In fact, it wasn't a house at all, it was an old church sitting at the very end of the terrace. As she pulled into the nearest parking bay, it struck her that someone had certainly put a lot of work into its upkeep. She was curious to meet her new client, a Mrs Pendrith. Dr. Ann Marie Barter is a functional medical practitioner in Colorado, she has two offices in Longmont and in Denver. She has practiced functional medicine for 12 years and she is the host of The Gut Health Reset Podcast. We start off talking about neurotransmitters, which are the chemical messengers in the body and their job is to transmit signals from nerve cells to target cells. The brain needs neurotransmitters to regulate many necessary functions throughout the body. We talk about mold and the negative effects it has on our neurotransmitters, which can affect multiple aspects of our health in areas many wouldn't think. We talk about Serotonin and dopamine, the foods that will help us obtain these hormones as well as the ones that may inhibit them, and how exercise can affect it. Dr. Barter reveals that meditation can increase dopamine levels by up to 65%. A challenging but fair Friday crossword, with some absolutely stellar cluing. Surely 18A, A child who's lying might make one, SNOWANGEL, deserves some sort of award, as does 40A, Small organic food producer, HONEYBEE (wow!); and we would be remiss if we didn't mention 8D, Explicit, to a Brit, SPELTOUT, and 43A, Hardly a long shot, PUTT. So, we doff our hats to the constructor, Nam Jin Yoon, and give his oeuvre a well-earned 5 squares on the JAMCR scale.
Mayday, Mayday! And, no, we're not just referring to the date. This was a tough crossword, with some delightful verbal misdirection. Exhibit A, 6A, One whose business is home-based?, UMP, and 22A, Popular camp assemblies, SMORES. Jean momentarily got stuck in the top right, convinced that 26A, Passes, was ELAPSED, rather than ENACTS; Mike got mired in the middle of the grid for what felt like a day and a half, having convinced himself that 43A, Motif in much Christian art, was ACORNTREE (rather than the in retrospect clearly much better answer, ADORATION). A good workout, most surely deserving of a full 5 squares on the JAMCR scale.
Today's crossword creator was on fire -- or at least thinking about fire, witness the three themed answers, MATCHBOX, TINDERPROFILE and FLINTMICHIGAN. Those three looooong answers made this a more strenuous Monday than usual, but that's why crosswords come with crosses. Speaking of fire, COALS (18D, Classic eyes for Frosty) also made an appearance, although the pluralization of what is already a collective noun did sound a bit off. After last week's ULTRAVIOLET, INFRA made an appearance in 43A, Prefix with red or structure. And earlier this month, REQS made a jarring appearance as the answer to March 3's 47A, Academic musts, for short -- so we were glad to see that the much more conventional PREREQS made it into today's puzzle, as in 46D, Algebra for calc, e.g.
There were no ERRATA in this perfect Friday crossword, with 5 loooong answers that spanned the grid -- 3 across and 2 down. Despite their length, however, they were relatively accessible, common phrases -- sneakily disguised to ELUDE discovery. Jean found a few new words to add to her vocabulary - 43A, Fencing sport with bamboo swords, KENDO, and 46A, Film composer Morricone, ENNIO. Mike learned about 7A, Painting technique used in van Gogh's "The Starry Night", IMPASTO, and the existence of 57D, ________ of This Swirled (Ben & Jerry's flavor), OAT. Yum!For Fun Fact Friday, we discussed the 3 musketeers of The Three Musketeers. Athos, Porthos, and Aramis, along with their friend, d'Artagnan. En guard!
An ARTFULLY constructed Saturday, with plenty of tough clues to RUMINATE over, from 14A, Wait here!, RESTAURANT (very nice), to the slightly less arcane 32D, Main course?, SEAROUTE. Jean had some difficulty with 33D, Nickname for the White House Correspondents' Dinner, NERDPROM, while Mike was temporarily flummoxed by 43A, Bottom lines, SUMS (as opposed to BUMS), crossing with 43D, It's not a good look, SNEER (as opposed to his original guess, based of suspension of disbelief and the basics of spelling, BLEER).
This was a glorious Saturday crossword, with Doug Peterson & Brad Wilbert pulling out all the stops! From 1A, Bands popular in the '70s, MOODRINGS, and 1D, Sight in a produce aisle, MIST, to 56A, Franchise with the "Dominating the Deep" DVD set, SHARKWEEK, and 30D, Things that generate a lot of cookie dough?, BAKESALES, they did not give an inch. Jean had trouble on the APORT side of the crossword, while Mike was done in by 43A, Nut chewed as a stimulant, KOLA, which he, as probably one of the top consumers of Diet Coke in Northeast WI, assumed had to be spelled COLA :-(A fabulous way to end the puzzle-solving week, we give this a 5 squares on the JAMCR scale.

An epic crossword, lots of long and obscure clues, just like you'd hope for and expect on a Saturday. Both Mike and Jean got stymied in various places - Jean at 1D, Band with the 1970's hit "Come and Get Your Love", REDBONE, and Mike at 18A, "Who Shot Mr. Burns on the Classic TV Episode, "Who Shot Mr. Burns?", MAGGIE. There were lots of fun, fascinating words - 43A, Score marking to play higher or lower than written, OTTAVA, and 26A, Mesoamerican language family with about half a million speakers, ZAPOTECAN. There were also some great clues, like 41A -Producers of sharp increases in height?, STILETTOS.All in all, a fabulous puzzle by Ryan McCarty (edited, as always, by Will Shortz), a 4.5 squares on the JAMCR scale

Exodus 34:29-35 and Luke 9:28-43A supernatural encounter with God is awe inspiring and has the potential to reform and transform our character, the two narratives we are going to read clearly desaturates that those who had these supernatural encounters with God were never the same again. In the same way if you have really really had an encounter with God you also will never remain the same again, this is the whole point of this podcast today. I pray that you will be blessed. We talked to two people about how the design process is different with women involved. Anyeleh Hallová is partner at the Portland firm project. Her latest act involves a high-rise made of wood. They spoke to us about projects they worked on.Tranformative Office Space at Swift - 26:26Portland is full of successful design agencies, but few shine as brightly as Swift. Started by Alicia McVey and Liz Valentine in 2006, it has grown to 140 people, 65 percent of whom are women. Of course, a fabulous company needs a fabulous office, and two years back, Swift set their eyes on an old awning factory in Northwest industrial Portland. We spoke with McVey and Swift's Chief Talent Officer Maren Elliott about designing the building, and what's different in an office where architecture deconstructs hierarchy.Reconstituted Sugar: Hacienda CDC Creates Las Adelitas - 40:43A blighted corner of the Cully neighborhood is about to get a big makeover.
