Contemplation asks us to let go of everything and simply rest in the Divine presence. But how, exactly, do we do that? In this episode, Thomas introduces more formally the method of Centering Prayer, developed by the spiritual giant, Father Thomas Keating. What we find in Centering Prayer is that attention follows intention. Each time our attention wanders, we gently renew “our intention to consent to God's presence and action within.” Upcoming workshop: Thomas will be in Salt Lake City May 15-17 to guide students in embodied practice, meditation and all sorts of surprises! Scholarships and financial aid always available.

"Episode 2: The Prayer of Quiet"Father Thomas Keating said in his book Open Mind Open Heart, “My conviction is that if people are never exposed to some kind of non-conceptual prayer, it may never develop at all because of the overly intellectual bias of western culture and the anti-contemplative trend of Christian teaching in recent centuries.”What happens if you take your foot off the gas? What would it look like for you to introduce more quiet into your relationship with your child?Dr. Jennifer Finlayson-Fife's Strengthening Your Relationship courseYou found me! During this episode a quote from Father Thomas Keating was contemplated, "We can only receive God. So that puts the spiritual journey in a very simple but clear light. This is not about getting something; it's about receiving something so that the initiative has already been put in place. You already are something wonderful, an image and likeness of God, a light that never goes out and that is possibly eternal, but which has been placed in this mysterious situation of a body in an evolving universe.".

Today's episode introduces two seemingly opposite topics that actually have surprising overlap -- Ignatian spirituality and the beliefs of the German Christian movement. Both topics hold much wisdom and challenge for us here in the Year of our Lord 2025. We begin with the Welcoming Prayer by Father Thomas Keating and discuss the Ignatian Examen alongside the mindset of the German Christians in 1933. What might God be speaking to us today through our own consolations and desolations?

Centering Prayer is a practice that changes the way we see the world from the inside out and is important for our well-being both physically and mentally. To help us reflect on this important principle, we are excited to welcome Fr. Greg Boyle, the founder of Homeboy Industries, the largest gang intervention, rehabilitation, and re-entry program in the world. Fr. Greg was born and raised in Los Angeles and was a Jesuit priest from 1986 to 1992. He served as pastor of Dolores Mission Church, the poorest Catholic parish in Los Angeles that had the highest concentration of gang activity in the city. After witnessing the devastating impact of gang violence on his community, peaking at 1,000 gang-related killings in 1992, he was inspired to adopt a radical approach at the time, treating gang members as human beings. Homeboy Industries employs and trains former gang members in a range of social enterprises, and provides critical services to thousands of individuals who walk through its doors each year seeking a better life.To connect further with Fr. On this episode, we welcome Mary Dwyer who has been practicing Centering Prayer for over 30 years. In the early 1990's she lived in Chrysalis House, a contemplative community experiment blessed by Father Thomas, which became an incubator of practice and programs in the early years of growth for Contemplative Outreach and Centering Prayer. She attended Georgetown University and majored in economics, later she went back to school and became a licensed social worker. Mary is currently in private practice as a social worker, while serving Contemplative Outreach as a member of the community, welcoming service team, a chairperson for Contemplative Outreach, and a member of the faculty. “We are in a time where everything that we think we have taken for granted in terms of human achievement, human conscience, human goodness are being turned upside down. To reclaim them, you know, to reclaim them is an act of courage, personally, but also depends to an extent on having a roadmap broad enough and receptive enough to receive the help that's coming to us from a wider world that we're not even aware of anymore, for which this planet is, in its own funky way, the eye of the needle. There's something really precious and really painful, really difficult about our walk here, and everybody knows it, but we can reach for hope.” So says Cynthia Bourgeault, an Episcopalian priest and modern day mystic, who is one of the most fascinating thinkers on the planet today. She has written many, many books—books that have re-ordered my understanding of the world and what we're all doing here. Her book on Mary Magdalene—The Meaning of Mary Magdalene: Discovering the Woman at the Heart of Christianity—reconceived the way I understood early Christianity, and then The Wisdom Jesus, The Holy Trinity and the Law of Three, and the Eye of the Heart have each brought me deeper into an understanding of consciousness. Ultimately, Cynthia is a map-maker—a map-maker who can put context around experience and point us toward where we all need to go. While she leads retreats and lectures, in her earlier life, Cynthia was a student and then a colleague of Father Thomas Keating, the founder of the Centering Prayer movement—Cynthia worked intently with this pioneering tradition, which seeks to unite wisdom traditions and teachers from across the globe. Cynthia is an emeritus faculty member at Richard Rohr's Center for Action and Contemplation. Her mind is complex, so listen closely—she is incredible. This is a reading of a selection of pointers and teachings by Father Keating on the healing and transformative power of centering prayer. They are taken from numerous texts written by him. Thomas Keating, O.C.S.O. (March 7, 1923 – October 25, 2018) was an American Catholic monk and priest of the Order of Cistercians of the Strict Observance (also known as Trappists). Keating was known as one of the principal developers of Centering Prayer, a contemporary method of contemplative prayer that emerged from St. Joseph's Abbey, Spencer, Massachusetts. Fr. Keating was an internationally renowned theologian and an accomplished author. He traveled the world to speak with laypeople and communities about contemplative Christian practices and the psychology of the spiritual journey. He helped found the Snowmass Interreligious Conference, which had its first meeting in the fall of 1983 and continued meeting annually.
Dr. Edward W. Bastian is an American-born filmmaker, scholar of Tibetan Buddhism, member of the Snowmass Conference, founder of the Spiritual Paths Institute, and the author of Interspiritual Meditation and Mandala. In this episode, we discuss how he found his way to Buddhism, the importance of learning-styles in religions, his meeting with Father Thomas Keating and experiences with the Snowmass Conference, the emergence of the interspiritual, the creation of an interspiritual meditation process, the seven steps of Interspiritual Meditation, the structure of tantric practice, interspiritual ‘processes' versus ‘practices,' and the mandala as a discernment tool for spiritual seekers. David and Dorian continue the Pathways to Presence series, this year using Father Thomas Keating's book Open Mind, Open Heart as the road map for their monthly discussion.
In this episode I'm sharing a prayer I pray almost daily these days. When my spiritual director first pointed me to this practice, honestly, I didn't like it at all. But I knew I needed it. With time, it's shaping, healing and deeply challenging me in all the best (but not comfortable) ways. This prayer invites us to a giant trust fall, inviting us to fall into the arms of Love working all things together for our healing and wholeness. While the prayer is associated with Father Thomas Keating, the practice was originally crafted by Mary Mrozowski, Keating's friend and colleague. I'm thankful to them both. What does it mean to live from the centered self in an off center world? We're delving into this challenge in today's chat with Keith Kristich, founder of Closer Than Breath, an online interspiritual community lifting up centering prayer and “the study of universal truths to deepen your relationship with God and develop peace within.” Keith is a commissioned teacher of Centering Prayer through Contemplative Outreach, trained with the Shalem Institute and certified Enneagram teacher through the Conscious Living Center. We discuss the transformative power of becoming still, listening to God's voice within us, moving from ego into deeper relationship with the Divine, and the wisdom of Father Thomas Keating (author, priest, teacher and leader within the contemplative prayer community), and Saint Teresa of Ávil, revered Spanish mystic, Carmelite nun and writer who once said: “Prayer is an act of love, words are not necessary.” Don't miss the next event from the Closer Than Breath community: Centering Prayer Summit, Jan. 21-23, a virtual space, to learn and practice with leading centering prayer teachers. On this episode of Opening Minds, Opening Hearts, we are excited to welcome a friend of Contemplative Outreach, Father Adam Bucko. He shares how Father Thomas Keating helped shape his work and inspired him to write his new book Let Your Heartbreak be Your Guide: Lessons in Engaged Contemplation. We discuss how trauma can change how one practices Centering Prayer and the discernment that comes with remaining silent or speaking out against social justice. Father Bucko also shares his experience working with homeless youth in New York City and leading The Center for Spiritual Imagination at the Episcopal Cathedral of the Incarnation.
On this very first episode of Opening Minds, Opening Hearts, we speak with author and spiritual leader, Carl Mcloman. Carl walks us through a deeper understanding of the relationships and distinctions between mystical traditions, Christian meditation, contemplation and Centering Prayer. He also helps us accept our humanness while building a healthy daily practice using silence, sacred words and the four guidelines of Centering Prayer as stated by Father Thomas Keating. Carl sees the elegance and simplicity of the method of centering prayer as a larger conversation that the Christian community is having about reclaiming this contemplative practice. I have been told recently that I have such. variety of guests, but there is all an underlying thread of the same message. I think too many people get caught up in what something should look like and not follow the signs laid out before them. My next guest could not ignore his calling. Please welcome Ken W. Stone. “Ken, if the ship sinks now, everyone will blame you.” It wasn't the ideal pep talk for a pastor in his first few days on the job, especially at a church that had gone through 20 pastors in 20 years. But when someone spoke those words to Ken Shigematsu, he stuck it out. 25 years later, he's still leading Tenth Church in Vancouver, Canada. Steve Carter asks about his sermon prep process, and Ken explains how a tidbit from preaching legend Haddon Robinson transformed his method from anxiety-laden to prayerful一from crammed to creative. Ken shares why he's thankful for his Japanese heritage, and how he's learned to surrender outcomes to God through Father Thomas Keating's “The Welcoming Prayer,” and practicing sabbath. He also uses an app called Centering Prayer that pings him throughout the day, reminding him to receive from God, not just achieve for God. Ep. 19 | Connie Zweig, Ph.D., Elder, award-winning author, and Shadow expert, has provided us with a rare gift in her recent book, The Inner Work of Age: Shifting from Role to Soul. Upon discovering there was a surprising lack of any information, resources, or even language with which to contextualize the inner work of aging and the crucial rite of passage to elderhood, Connie has given us just that. In this conversation, we come face to face with our own inner ageist shadow character and we learn that if we do the inner work, we can make the all-important shift from doing to being, let go of our roles, begin to identify with our spiritual nature, and open the door of our awareness to further developmental stages. Rather than becoming seniors in decline, Connie illuminates who we can become as elders. “The world needs elders now: for their compassion, their gratitude, their generosity, their skills, their shadow awareness, and their spiritual development. The world is starved for this nourishment.” Recorded on October 6, 2021. “There is a whisper, a restless longing, inside of people for something more.” Topics & Time StampsThe surprising lack of information, language, and context for inner soul work for those of us living beyond midlife (03:44) Connie realizing her own “ageist” bias, and how ageism is internalized from our culture (08:08) The first inner obstacle to overcome on our way to elderhood is the Inner Ageist shadow character (10:06) Internalized ageism affects our health, cognitive and physical, quality of life, and longevity and becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy (10:44) Challenges that elders face specific to our time (12:15) Aging from the inside out, from “role to soul,” doing contemplative practice and inner work, turning in, is available to all regardless of circumstance (15:32) What practices and spiritual experiences have led Connie on the wisdom path? Howard Thurman, contemplative life and ways of being interspiritual, the nine new monastic vows as framed by Rev. Diane Berke, goal-oriented spirituality and ‘spirituality for me', service to others, and stories of interfaith challenge.Rory McEntee is the co-founder of Charis Foundation for New Monasticism and Interspirituality (with Netanel Miles-Yépez and Adam Bucko) and co-author (with Adam Bucko) of The New Monasticism: An Interspiritual Manifesto for Contemplative Living). This time of year encourages a new start, a letting go, a shaking loose of old skins and embracing a new kind of strength. Maybe growing and maturity means releasing. But what if part of releasing is allowing? What if shaking it off without first holding it out only means it will come back around again (and maybe not in very kind ways next time.) What if letting go starts with letting in? That's what The Welcoming Prayer from Father Thomas Keating is all about. Listen in. The practice of Solitude is...A. Not possibleB. Scary C. Inviting D. All of the Above In the busy-ness of life right now, this is the episode for you. Josh and Kit are exploring how the practice of hitting pause is vital to living your life. We’re going to define the spiritual discipline of Solitude and ways you can move towards it.We hope you’ll understand how to set realistic expectations for yourself so you can begin where you are with what you have.Rather than wait until you’ve got it all together; show up with what you’ve got. God, ever-present and always patient, is waiting in the stillness as you take this step towards “Becoming Whole.”Highlights:Solitude is a meaningful time, an intimate time to be honest and vulnerable with yourself and with God about the things that are going on in your life.It is an intentional way to move away from the front lines of life and to just be with God.It is a comfort. It is a power. It is learning how to be present with yourself and with God.Homework:Remember, the way you practice Solitude is between you and God. Pick a time of day, an amount of time and a place that work for you. Release expectations of how it should feel and just invite God in.Simple Invitational Prayer: “Come Lord Jesus” Revelation 22:20Extras:“In one of the very earliest training workshops led by Father Thomas Keating himself, a nun tried out her first twenty-minute taste of Centering Prayer and then lamented, ‘Oh, Father Thomas, I’m such a failure at this prayer. In twenty minutes I’ve had ten thousand thoughts!’“How lovely,” responded Keating, without missing a beat. “Ten thousand opportunities to return to God.”Transcription:Full Transcription Available hereOriginal music by Shannon Smith. Centering Prayer incorporates silence, stillness, and solitude. These three things can be hard to find and hard to create... or even hard to choose! It's a challenge to silence the mind and simply be, even for a brief interval of the day. But of course we're going to encourage you to try it on. This practice welcomes the awareness of God's presence, helping us to rest in the fact that the loving God is with us. You may find the more you practice this discipline, the more peace you will experience, and suddenly you'll notice transformation has happened, almost taking you by surprise. Notes from the episode: Father Thomas Keating on Centering Prayer; Mindful Silence by Phileena Heuertz; Spiritual Disciplines Handbook by Adele Alberg Calhoun
Distilled from the profound teachings of the Christian contemplative heritage, Centering Prayer has aimed to bring a living spirituality into an age where God is typically reduced to the New-Age vicissitudes of emotionality, if not simply pronounced dead. Listen as Fr. Thomas Keating and Ken Wilber discuss the remarkable history and importance of Centering Prayer. Father Thomas Keating has been a key figure in the Centering Prayer movement since its early beginnings in the 1970s. Distilled from the profound teachings of the Christian contemplative heritage, reaching from the early Desert Fathers and Mothers to The Cloud of Unknowing, St John of the Cross, and St Teresa of Avila, Centering Prayer has aimed to bring a living spirituality into an age where God is either reduced to the New-Age vicissitudes of emotionality or simply pronounced dead. Although it would embarrass him to hear it, many people consider Father Thomas Keating to be a living Christian saint in the truest sense of the term. We at Integral Life certainly do so, and it is therefore with honor and humility that we present a conversation with this deeply realized human being. Father Thomas Keating has been a key figure in the Centering Prayer movement since its early beginnings in the 1970s. Distilled from the profound teachings of the Christian contemplative heritage—reaching from the early Desert Fathers and Mothers to The Cloud of Unknowing, St John of the Cross, and St Teresa of Avila—Centering Prayer has aimed to bring a living spirituality into an age where God is either reduced to the New-Age vicissitudes of emotionality or is simply pronounced dead. It was as a freshman in college that Father Thomas was forced to confront “the death of God” in the form of a modern philosophy course. Having been raised a Catholic, but “without a profound understanding of its historical or theological background,” the assaults on religion by the likes of Nietzsche and Schopenhauer were quite unsettling. Having resolved to confront this dilemma through study, Father Thomas returned to the work of the early Church Fathers and their understanding of the Gospel. As a result of this research, It became clearer and clearer to me that the Christian religion was really about transformation…. I got thoroughly convinced that the contemplative dimension of the Gospel is what Christianity is really all about. It’s the heart of the Gospel. But when I started looking around for how I could get some help developing a contemplative life, there wasn’t anybody…. Thus, the seed that would eventually bloom into Centering Prayer was sown deep in Father Thomas’s heart. Even though he has spent the whole of his adult life in monasteries, Father Thomas’s gift to the world has been to help bring God back within reach of the average human soul. As he points out, the contemplative faculty is not a reward for austerity, but is fundamental to human nature. Father Thomas touches on many subjects in this dialogue, ranging from the effects of Vatican II, to the influence of Eastern traditions, to the need for an integration of the contemplative heart and the discursive head. His is a beautiful story, drawing on a lifetime’s worth of experience and yet always grounded in the timeless Mystery of God. As Father Thomas reminds us, “It can’t be expressed as it actually is, but you have to say something!” And may we respectfully suggest that you listen to the soul behind those words, to the depth and presence of one in whom God shines?
The Circle of Hope pastor's start out with a little talkback, pondering answers to the question this week from our Instagram: "What strategies have you used to pay attention?" Setting timers, standing, coffee, making and keeping routines, doing chores, and many more are considered, as well as a few of their own ideas on what they do to help with focus and concentration. Later, the pastors do a deep dive into the Enneagram, discussing the great wisdom learned from it, their use of it as a helpful tool in spiritual development and personal growth. They regard some of the dangers and pitfalls as well. They end their time with what's been nourishing their souls: a poem from Malcom Guite, a Bible study and reflection tool, a new socially conscious Instagram, the Chicago Bulls...All this and more on Resist and Restore! If feelings of fear and anxiety are threatening to sweep you away right now, there is a way to pray that allows you to name your feelings - as big as they are, to welcome reality as it is rather than fighting it, so that you can let those feelings go and find peace even in the midst of the storm. In this brief episode, I guide you through how to welcome any feeling you have, as big as it is, feeling it in your body so that you can eventually move through it and let it go. Using The Welcoming Prayer (originally written by Mary Mrozowski but adapted and widely spread by Fr. Thomas Keating), I teach the three movements of this kind of prayer: (1) Focus/sink in; (2) Welcome; (3) Let go. I hope this method of guided prayer will help you to find a sense of calm and peace even in the midst of so much uncertainty. Grace and peace, my friends. Hello, and welcome to Methods: an exploration in guided prayer and meditation. This episode is part of our Being-With series, a subtle nod to the philosopher Martin Heidegger and his term referencing the Mitsein aspect of being. That the very nature of humanity is to be in relationship to others. We are inauthentic when we fail to recognize how much and in what ways how we think of ourselves and how we habitually behave is influenced by our social surroundings. We are authentic when we pay attention to that influence and decide for ourselves whether to go along with it or not. Today we speak with my friend Rich Lewis, a leader for RCMR (Recovering Christianity's Mystical Roots) and a contemplative workshop leader and writer. In our conversation we get into the nuts and bolts of Centering Prayer, the type of contemplative prayer popularized mainly by Father Thomas Keating. This evening, Mitchell Rabin's guest is renowned author, scientist and former monk, leader of the inter-spiritual Movement, Kurt Johnson. We will be looking at a series of extraordinary events the are coming up in the next few months in general and in NYC in particular. We'll also be discussing what we need to do to preserve our planet at this tenuous moment in human history. We'll look at systems, patterns, the meaning of the solstice and cycles we've been able to identify as well as tendencies of human nature, toward altruism, toward cooperation, in the name of the basis of survival and evolutionary growth. Kurt is well known internationally as a scientist, comparative religionist, social activist and former monastic. With a PhD in evolution, ecology, systematics, and comparative biology plus extensive training in comparative religion and philosophy, he was associated professionally for twenty years with the American Museum of Natural History and also the One Spirit Interfaith Seminary in New York City. Ordained in three spiritual traditions, he is widely regarded as the closest associate of Brother Wayne Teasdale, the founder of the modern “interspiritual movement,” and works also with the international Contemplative Alliance and Father Thomas Keating, founder of the Centering Prayer Movement. In science, Kurt has published over 200 professional articles and seven books on evolution and ecology. Father Thomas Keating was a Trappist monk in the Cistercian Order who served as abbot of Saint Joseph's Abbey Monastery in Spencer, MA, for more than 20 years. He was the author of 20 books, and was one of the architects of the contemporary Centering Prayer movement. Father Keating passed away on October 25, 2018. In celebration of his life and to honor his death, Sounds True is rebroadcasting this classic Insights at the Edge interview. Here, Tami Simon and Father Keating discuss the monastic path, prayer, doubt, and how he has dealt with both little deaths and big deaths in his own life. They also talk about the afterlife and the transformative process that occurs when one engages regularly with the practice of Centering Prayer. (72 minutes) Tami's Takeaway: This conversation was originally recorded in 2008, 10 years before Father Thomas Keating died on October 25, 2018, at the age of 95. We discussed in detail many little deaths that had occurred in his life, including a fire that occurred at his monastery, his resignation from being an abbot, and other events that Father Thomas called "invitations to greater and greater diminishment." Surrendering and accepting these little deaths anchored Father Thomas in what he describes as a "boundless confidence with nothing to stand on." We even discussed what Father Thomas imagined his own physical death would be like. His answer: "A plunge into the immensity of love, irresistibly." Listening to this conversation afresh reminded me of how Father Thomas Keating is a truly great teacher of death and resurrection.
This week on the BHNN Guest Podcast, Loch Kelly shares a conversation with Father Thomas Keating around the many lenses of science and spirituality that seek to uncover our true nature.Father Thomas Keating was one of the principal architects and teachers of the Christian contemplative prayer movement. Earlier this week, I felt somewhat unglued and ready for a routine. Getting kids back to school in different weeks, with one attending evening college classes as a high-school junior and shy of her driver's license, there's been a lot of chauffeuring or, rather, being chauffeured. Then labor day, a day off and a weekend of 14th-birthday celebrations for the youngest. Summer retreated with a bang. It was a great season initiated by an incredible family trip to Europe. So slinking off to school and work routines is not, exactly, exciting. Yet necessary.I crave more-focused work, balance and rhythm. The busyness has caused me to let go of a regular spiritual practice, even weekly worship twice, and my daily gym visits. It's like skipping medication. For one day, I'd like to just wake up to the day and head onward, no swim, sinus care, supplement taking or gluten-free lunch packing. Just once. And not have to experience repercussions.Yes, I know that I am whining. Tuesday, I, dutifully, headed to the gym by 6:45 am, swam less than the usual mile (I must build up again), blended and slurped down my spinach-blueberry-and-brown-rice smoothie, dropped my oldest off at 9 am, returned to take my supplements, pack my lunch and get to the studio. Once there, my first action was to light a candle, welcoming Spirit's light, and pull out my daily devotional. The bookmark was still on August 21.The passage was about beginning the spiritual journey with a reminder that we humans center the universe on ourselves. We can't help it. The shattering of illusions, Father Thomas Keating writes, is the beginning of the journey. The real spiritual journey and the way to nowhere. The way to nowhere. I can identify with that.Who likes to admit they haven't the faintest idea where they are headed? Practically no one. It's not practiced in this culture. Everyone knows exactly where they are going: to work, careers, up the rungs of the social and corporate ladders, and, even Heaven. We are so sure of it. Otherwise, what are we left with? Feeling out of control?Societally, we are launched on an upward path. I left that long ago and never really understood it until spiritual teacher Richard Rohr wrote that the spiritual path is one of descent ... into the messiness of life and brokenness. THAT I could identify with – over and over again like a skipping record. With a new awareness, I have begun to notice something pretty radical. When I am slumming in the sludge of life, guess who is always with me? God. I don't especially remember feeling her presence when I traipsed up and down the steps of my corporate job years ago. As I traveled, marketed, plotted and planned I felt, well, hollow. Like I was just pretending. It seemed as if we all were. The lemmings marching in sober-faced, stiff and Zombie-like (perhaps mirroring our product, caskets) each morning and flowing out each evening, together at the same time. Like them, I was probably asleep.I have since awakened and know Spirit's presence in the depths of darkness, on the average day and the heights of contentment. She is with me when I am alone, when I worship with others, when I struggle with others. I know her most intimately through Jesus and his universal Christ energy.I know it best when I keep a daily practice that opens me to that energy and love as I journey to nowhere.• What role does routine play in my life?• What happens when it's not in place?• Where do I pencil in time with God?• What difference does that make?• When have I felt I was on a journey to nowhere?beginning of theweek I amchomping to getorganized andfeel in controlagainthat holidays, and new schedulesbecome assimilated... quicklybouncing fromone busynessto the otherwhen I rememberto light the candleand let Sprit inListen to this post:
Fr. Thomas Keating was a founding member and the spiritual guide of Contemplative Outreach, LTD. He served on Contemplative Outreach's Board of Trustees since the organization's beginning. Fr. Keating was one of the principal architects and teachers of the Christian contemplative prayer movement and, in many ways, Contemplative Outreach is a manifestation of his longtime desire to contribute to the recovery of the contemplative dimension of Christianity. Fr. Keating's interest in contemplative prayer began during his freshman year at Yale University in 1940 when he became aware of the Church's history and of the writings of Christian mystics. Prompted by these studies and time spent in prayer and meditation, he experienced a profound realization that, on a spiritual level, the Scriptures call people to a personal relationship with God. Fr. Keating took this call to heart. He transferred to Fordham University in New York and, while waiting to be drafted for service in World War II, he received a deferment to enter seminary. Shortly after graduating from an accelerated program at Fordham, Fr. Keating entered an austere monastic community of the Trappist Order in Valley Falls, Rhode Island in January of 1944, at the age of 20. He was ordained a priest in June of 1949. In March of 1950 the monastery in Valley Falls burned down and, as a result, the community moved to Spencer, Massachusetts. Shortly after the move, Fr. Keating became ill with a lung condition and was put into isolation in the city hospital of Worcester, Massachusetts for nine weeks. After returning to the monastery, he stayed in the infirmary for two years. Fr. Keating was sent to Snowmass, Colorado in April of 1958 to help start a new monastic community called St. Benedict's. He remained in Snowmass until 1961, when he was elected abbot of St. Joseph's in Spencer, prompting his move back to Massachusetts. He served as abbot of St. Joseph's for twenty years until he retired in 1981 and returned to Snowmass, where he resided until his death on October 25, 2018. During Fr. Keating's term as abbot at St. Joseph's and in response to the reforms of Vatican II, he invited teachers from the East to the monastery. As a result of this exposure to Eastern spiritual traditions, Fr. Keating and several of the monks at St. Joseph's were led to develop the modern form of Christian contemplative prayer called Centering Prayer. Fr. Keating was a central figure in the initiation of the Centering Prayer movement. He offered Centering Prayer workshops and retreats to clergy and laypeople and authored articles and books on the method and fruits of Centering Prayer. In 1983, he presented a two-week intensive Centering Prayer retreat at the Lama Foundation in San Cristabol, New Mexico, which proved to be a watershed event. Many of the people prominent in the Centering Prayer movement today attended this retreat. Contemplative Outreach was created in 1984 to support the growing spiritual network of Centering Prayer practitioners. Fr. Keating became the community's president in 1985, a position he held until 1999. Fr. Keating was an internationally renowned theologian and an accomplished author. He traveled the world to speak with laypeople and communities about contemplative Christian practices and the psychology of the spiritual journey, which is the subject of his Spiritual Journey video and DVD series. Since the reforms of Vatican II, Fr. Keating was a core participant in and supporter of interreligious dialogue. He helped found the Snowmass Interreligious Conference, which had its first meeting in the fall of 1983 and continues to meet each spring. Fr. Keating also was a president of the Temple of Understanding and of the Monastic Interreligious Dialogue. Perhaps the biggest testament to Fr. Keating's dedication to reviving Christian contemplative practices was his choice to live a busy, public life instead of the quiet,
Tami Simon speaks with David Frenette, a leader and senior teacher in the Centering Prayer movement, and a friend and advisor of Father Thomas Keating for 30 years. He is a spiritual director, retreat leader, and serves as an adjunct faculty member at Naropa University. With Sounds True, he has published the book The Path of Centering Prayer: Deepening Your Experience of God. In this episode, Tami speaks with David about his apprenticeship with Father Keating in the practice of Centering Prayer, the role of a spiritual father or mother in one's contemplative life, what he means when he talks about God and the Trinitarian mystery, and the most important contemplative attitude to support a practice of Centering Prayer.
