Welcome to a special Christmas Day episode of The Grumpy Old Coaches! Can you believe this is our very first podcast published on Christmas Day, after almost 400 episodes? In the spirit of the season, we've reunited at the White Lion in Wigan, with Steve Lumley and myself joining Marc Laithwaite for our annual Grumpy Old Coaches reunion. It's been a year since our last get-together, so we have plenty to discuss. We'll reflect on 2024 and share our experiences of not quite achieving our goals due to injury and illness. Our conversation covers: The impact of age and over 30 years of multi-sport activities on our bodies. A surprising admission from Marc, who concedes that I was right all along. Steve's lifelong ambition to accomplish something remarkable during his 60th year. My decision to back out of a challenge involving horses. We hope you enjoy this festive episode as much as we enjoyed recording it! P.S. We recorded this episode outside the pub, so you might hear some background noise and occasional colorful language. Ok, it's nearly Christmas and you know what that means? Yes, it's time for a Grumpy Old Coaches Christmas get together! Last year we recorded our show live from the pub and it proved to be quite popular with the coaches and the listeners, so we've continued the trend this year. Last Friday we all went over to Wigan and recorded the show from Marc's local, The White Lion.   We calculated that between us we have over 80 years of coaching experience and probably about the same number of years competing in triathlon. Anyway, as we are all knocking on we decided to have a chat about how our approach to training has altered with our age. Then it seemed a natural jump to talk about how our coaching approach had changed. Finally, Mrs Ward (who definitely isn't grumpy at all) got the opportunity to ask a few rogue questions.   Steve shares his admiration for an 83 year old lady Marc declares that he has given up training Steve has a rant about how boring triathlon is What's all this about a horse? How darts could make triathlon more interesting What do Marc and Robin Hood have in common? The ultimate winter comfort foods revealed   And much more!   CLICK HERE To join the new Small Group Coaching programme with Simon and Beth.   You can contact Steve Lumley via his email, TriCoach.Lum@gmail.com. In a recent podcast with ultra running coach Jason Koop he said that ultra races were much cooler than triathlons and he wasn't surprised that triathletes were giving them a whirl. One of the coolest and most popular Ultra running events in the UK is the Lakeland 50/100, and my 3 guests in this week's podcast are all triathletes. Back in April, I chatted with Steve Lumley, a Grumpy Old Coach and long time friend who had taken up the challenge of competing the Lakeland 50 this summer. We also spoke with fellow Grumpy Old Coach and Lakeland race organiser, Marc Laithwaite. I'm pleased to be able to report that Steve managed to complete the 50, and today I'm catching up with him, Marc and another guest, SWAT member Owen Barden, who was taking on the Lakeland 100 challenge.  If you like our Grumpy Old Coach podcasts or you have are interested in taking part in the Lakeland 50, 100, or any other ultra trail run, you'll love this episode.   The ideal training for Lakeland 50 - Step ups, running in the dark and a course recce (19:30) Mindset and the importance of mental preparation (29:45) Why marathon runners struggle with training for an ultra (30:15) Hydration and nutrition are critical: Make sure you have a flexible, well practiced strategy(50:00) Choosing the right footwear: Cushioning and foot protection trumps grip (52:00)     Listen to the original Lakeland 50 podcast with Marc and Steve from April 2023. Listen to both of the episodes with Ultra running coach Jason Koop Part 1 & Part 2.   To get your FREE copy of a list with all of our guest's recommended books, please Beth@thetriathloncoach.com.   You can find more information about Steve Lumley HERE.  Marc Laithwaite runs The Endurance Store, an independent running and triathlon store in West Lancashire, and B-spoke cycles in Croston, Lancashire. You might hope that with over 60 years of coaching experience between us we'd have learned a few things by now. Like not to be too ambitious, to remember all important pieces of kit before leaving for the race, or remembering that we are all getting on a bit rather than pretending that we are still 25. Fortunately Marc, Steve and myself still think we are young at heart (and with the fitness to match) and that we can take on ambitious events like the Lakeland 50. When it comes to remembering stuff, we follow the old coaches rule, "Do as I say, not as I do!" So, we don't write checklists, and we do leave packing to the last minute. Forgetting the odd bit of kit adds to the experience!   Anyway, back to that Lakeland 50. After a self confessed "few years of detraining”, Steve rose to the challenge thrown down by Marc and has entered the longest run he has ever attempted. A 50-mile ultra marathon in the Lake District.    In this episode Marc (as race director) outlines what Steve is letting himself in for, and Steve shares his very rudimentary training plan. We also chat about: A strange story about deceased Cambodian dictator, Pol Pot, opera song Nessandorma, and a hallucinating ultra runner The sad origins of the climb called Jacob's Ladder. Why you need a cowboy hat to take part in this year's event Downhill running and brisk walking must be part of the training plan Walking poles and why Steve needs to practice with them You can find more information about Steve Lumley HERE. Marc Laithwaite runs The Endurance Store, an independent running and triathlon store in West Lancashire, and B-spoke cycles in Croston, Lancashire. For a hot moment Kate Forbes was favourite to replace Nicola Sturgeon as SNP leader and Scotland's first minister. But revealing her socially conservative views in a series of interviews, including being against equal marriage, gender self-identification and sex outside of marriage, has dismayed her supporters and jeopardised her campaign. Anoosh Chakelian and Ben Walker discuss the SNP's socially liberal base and the parallels between Forbes and Tim Farron, who resigned as Liberal Democrat leader in 2017 after he was repeatedly challenged about his views on gay sex. Anoosh then speaks to Farron himself about how he rates Forbes' prospects given his own experience, her brutally honest strategy, and whether a leader with her views is compatible with the SNP's progressive agenda. Then in You Ask US, Ben answers listeners' polling questions on where Britain stands on strikes, apathy towards Brexit, and the significance of the West Lancashire by-election result, as forecast by Britain Predicts, the New Statesman's new polling model.Subscribers can get an ad free version of the NS Podcast on the New Statesman app If you have a question for You Ask Us, go to newstatesman.com/youaskus Podcast listeners can subscribe to the New Statesman for just £1 a week for 12 weeks using our special offer. The Northern Agenda

As we were recording this week's podcast, the Housing Secretary Michael Gove was up in Rochdale for talks with the local housing association that owned the flat where two-year-old Awaab Ishak died after prolonged exposure to mould.Awaab died in December 2020 from a respiratory condition caused by mould in a one-bedroom housing association flat. His parents, Faisal Abdullah and Aisha Amin, who came to the UK from Sudan, repeatedly complained about the mould and they say they weren't listened to because of who they were.Since the full horrendous details of little Awaab's death, Mr Gove has taken personal involvement in making sure housing associations like Rochdale Boroughwide Housing do more to prevent future tragedies. He has blocked the £1 million in funding RBH was due to receive to build new homes and won't give it any more until it proves it is a responsible landlord. The social landlord's chief executive - who earned £170,000 last year - has been kicked out and its directors have promised to do more to up their game. But is that enough? Before he stepped into the Commons for a debate about Awaab's death, local Labour MP, Tony Lloyd, spoke to The Northern Agenda producer Dan McLaughlin. ***And, as we head into Christmas, there's a present coming down the chimney with Santa for anyone who enjoys swingometers, late night results and canvassing for votes in the cold and wet. The next few weeks will see not one, not two but three by-elections for Parliamentary seats in the North of England, putting Westminster watchers on high alert as they try to assess what it all means for the fortunes of the party leaders. On December 15, we'll find out who will be replacing Kate Green in the Greater Manchester seat of Stretford and Urmston, as she leaves to become Andy Burnham's deputy mayor. And sometime in early 2023, there'll be a by-election in West Lancashire, where the incumbent MP Rosie Cooper is resigning to take up the job as Chair of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust. But the first by-election grabbing our attention is in Chester, triggered by the resignation of Christian Matheson after complaints of “serious sexual misconduct” against him - which he denies - were upheld by a parliamentary watchdog. What have these three seats all got in common? They're all held by Labour with pretty big majorities, so it'd be a big surprise if they changed hands. But there's still plenty of local angles to be interested in, so to find out what the big issues at play in Chester, Rob Parsons speak to Mark Smith, a Local Democracy Reporter who covers Cheshire West & Chester.***The Northern Agenda is a Laudable production for Reach. Thankfully, along with so many tens of thousands of his colleagues, Paul stood his ground and refused to give in to the pressure, a collective resistance which ultimately led to the government backing down on the idea, and an important signal to the vaccinators not to extend their mandates to further sectors of society. Can you believe it's been 6 long months since the Grumpy Old Coaches recorded a podcast? We're back today, and this time we're discussing some of the biggest mistakes triathletes make leading up to their ‘A' races. Marc, Steve, and I did a rough tally of the number of Ironman races we had completed and it came to well over 50, spanning a cumulative total of over 50 years of racing. As coaches, we've also amassed a similar number of years and helped thousands of athletes to hit their race day goals. BUT, there have been mistakes and disasters along the way (as well as a few funny moments). In this podcast, we share some of the most glaring errors to provide you with a few laughs but more importantly to try and help you avoid the mistakes that we (yes coaches get things wrong as well) and others have made, including: What happens when you don't write a checklist Don't do anything new on race day How often do you really need to visit the expo? What could go wrong with ramping up your training 7 days before the event? Have you written a race morning timetable? It's CW-only on the 144MHz band and the exchange is signal report, serial number and locator. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA & G4BAO on Friday the 29th of October. Well, we had another topsy-turvy week, with the sunspot number going from a lowly 10 to a much more impressive 91. We started last week with a virtually spotless solar surface, but this week the Sun is peppered with spots, with five active regions in place on Thursday. The net result is the maximum usable frequencies have been climbing, with 3,000km-plus paths being reached at times on 24 and even 28MHz, according to the Propquest website. There has been plenty of DX to be worked as well, with HD8R in the Galapagos Islands, VK9DX on Norfolk Island, both on CW, and 7P8RU in Lesotho making it into many amateur's logs. The first two were on 30 metres, which is well worth a look. Special event station HS400OZ in Thailand has also been putting in an appearance on 30m FT8 and has been workable from the UK. With Solar Cycle 25 now well underway, it is always worth checking the higher bands too, such as 12 and 10 metres. Next week NOAA predicts the solar flux index will be in the range 85-96, starting the week at the higher end and then declining. Geomagnetic conditions are predicted to be quiet, with a maximum Kp index of two. However, this could change if a coronal mass ejection occurs. For example, Region 2887, which was Earth-centric on Thursday, has unleashed one M-class and several C-class flares. A large flare, accompanied by a CME, could easily disrupt the HF bands for days. And now the VHF and up propagation news. The current spell of unsettled weather will become more widespread and affect much of the country during the first half of the coming week. There had been a hint of Tropo in the southeast last week, but we'll have to wait for the second half of the week before there is a return of weak Tropo in the south as a transient ridge crosses the country. This will be replaced by further unsettled weather by the weekend. In propagation terms, this means that rain scatter on the GHz bands may be on offer again through much of the coming week. Otherwise, it is the chance of aurora or meteor scatter that could entice us onto the VHF bands. The Orionids meteor shower is coming to an end and the Taurids are in progress, but with a ZHR of not more than five, there's little to get excited about. We have to wait until mid-November for the Leonids, so stick to the time around dawn to maximise your chances with random meteors until then. For EME enthusiasts, Moon declination is high early this week, going negative on Tuesday. Path losses are at their lowest with perigee on Friday but this coincides with low negative declination, meaning the Moon will be low in the sky at zenith. This trend of lowest declination getting closer to perigee reverses in June next year, but not until June 2026 will we see maximum declination coincide with perigee. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

The Beast of Winter Hill. Oct 20. Sheep Killed, a 3 Toed Print & a Rumbling Growling Creature. Two men out Rabbiting See a set of Reddish Eyes watching them in their torch light and they Hear a Terrible Growl. The men stumbled up a fresh kill and whatever had hunted it was out there watching them from the darkness. The legends of a Bear Human Hybrid haunting the hills of West Lancashire are not as far fetched as they seem.I was contacted on the 25th October 2020 by a lovely lady named Jackie. Jackie wanted to make a report on behalf of her partner and his friend, who had a terrifying experience the evening before we chatted. Jackie explained her partner Dave and his friend Adam had found “a strange sheep carcass that was still steaming when they approached it up at Winterhill” As they were discussing what animal could have made the kill they both heard a rumbling growling sound. Both men stated “they heard something that night they could not explain” The men were interviewed by BBR Investigators Mick McClaren & Carolan Smith who both heard a similar growl one night close to Edgerton Reservoir in 2019.That night the men were walking on the road that leads up to Winter Hill, a well known spot here in the NW. They were around ¾ of a mile away from the Chinese Gardens. An area where there is a previous sighting of an upright humanoid figure known as the Bear Man of Rivington. They arrived, got their guns from the car and set off, both had torches and as they walked Dave realised that Adam had almost stepped into a carcass of some kind. Shining their torches on to it they both saw a Sheep that seemed to have been almost pulled in half? The carcass was steaming even with the rain and the cold night air. Whatever had killed it, couldn't be too far away as this was a very fresh kill. Adam described the carcass as unusual, the head was missing and the rib cage was snapped in two. Dave agreed he said it looked as if it had been pulled into two pieces. Alarmed by this both men scanned the area around them with torches looking to see what had growled. Adam thought Dave was maybe messing about with him, but as Dave was speaking the growl came again. They quickly scanned the darkness and Dave saw a dark, stocky shape with reddish eyeshine watching them in his torch light. The shape dipped out of view and was gone. They both left quickly and got back into the car. Both were really shaken up and were still in bewilderment when Mick went up to meet them to record the event. Adam stated he felt almost hysterical and was laughing due to the fear he was feeling. He is not prepared to return up to the hill at night alone, which has done in the past many, many times. Even though they were both armed the men felt it would have been impossible to shoot whatever was out there with them, due to the sheer size of the dark shape and the sound of the growl. They both felt the growl came from something big. Adam turned his gun into a bat at that point as he knew shooting at it would be pointless.“The remaining Sheep in the field had flocked together and looked scared and worried. They were acting really strange. The growling continued all through the event. It was a loud, rumbling growling noise”. Adam wondered if this could be paranormal as the growl was so scary. And they both felt watched and stalked all the way back to the car. It was around midnight on a wet night and they saw no humans on the way in or out of the area. Dave said to cover his fear “I think we need bigger guns” They pulled over at this point and tried to get themselves together. Adam stated “he felt helpless and nervous and it was a sickening feeling, almost like fighting in the dark”After the event the men tried to find the growl using google and known animal recordings here in the UK on their phones. They did not find a match with anything. The only sound that matched was the reported noise of a Werewolf on a recording on youtube. Both men agreed the sound was the same as they had heard that evening. They left the area, Dave returned with Jackie a couple of days later and photographed the remains of the Sheep. At this point it is almost picked clean.Mick and Carolan accompanied both men and Jackie back to the area and they were able to see the carcass for themselves. Mick recorded this event and his next visit a couple of days later.Mick and Carolan re-visited with a family member on the next weekend which was Halloween. Being in lockdown no people were up on the hill, that they could see. The group made their way to the area the Sheep was found by Dave and Adam. On examining the area they spotted a Skull which had been driven forcibly into the wall surrounding the field. A spinal column and vertebrae were also found close to the wall. Next to the wall and visible in Micks video is a strange 3 toed print.Mick has video footage of the remains of the sheep and you can find them here on his youtube channel - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HTkjfqqgLs
