Amanda has never tested positive for COVID-19, but she’s had symptoms two separate times since the coronavirus pandemic first hit the United States this spring. Both times, in April and June, she had incredible chest pains, fatigue, night sweats, and diarrhea — all known COVID symptoms. Both times, she lost her sense of taste and smell, and got pinkeye. She even had two brain strokes, a possible complication of COVID reported by up to 6% of patients. But even at her sickest, the south Florida resident felt it didn’t compare to the severe cases of COVID she’d read about, especially fatal ones. “I just felt so guilty,” Amanda tells Bustle. “I felt like I was given another chance at life and had to do something to acknowledge that it was a miracle to still be here today.” That’s why the 28-year-old law student decided to become one of the 44,000 participants volunteering to stop the pandemic as we know it by taking part in Pfizer’s Phase 3 clinical trial for their COVID-19 vaccine. Since she tested negative each time she got sick, and has tested negative for antibodies, she was able to participate. The pharmaceutical company is one of many racing to get the first FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccine to market. Like its closest competitors Moderna and AstraZeneca, Pfizer has promised not to submit the vaccine for review until its safety and efficacy have been proven in a clinical trial. Already, AstraZeneca's and Johnson & Johnson's trials had to restart after participants got sick — a sign that safety concerns are of the utmost importance through this process. If Pfizer's vaccine is safe and prevents or reduces the severity of COVID infections in at least half of participants — a process that involves comparing cases of COVID among the people who received the vaccine and those who got the placebo — it could request emergency FDA approval. Already, the company is manufacturing the vaccine to have 100 million doses ready by the end of 2020, in case it works. Having spent a few years pursuing pharmacy school before shifting towards law, Amanda still thinks of herself as a “scientist,” and felt excited to be part of a significant public health effort. Still, she says she wouldn’t have felt comfortable participating until Phase 3, citing fears that the government has pressured companies to fast-track vaccine development. The way Pfizer’s CEO has publicly pushed back against politicizing the vaccine race set her at ease. Phase 3 clinical trials are double-blind, so Amanda doesn’t know if the two shots she’s received were vaccine or placebo. Before receiving each of her injections, she had to take a COVID test and a pregnancy test, and she’s supposed to stay on birth control through the duration of the trial. Volunteers need to be 12 or older, not pregnant, "in good general health," and not previously diagnosed with COVID in order to qualify. On top of seven in-person check-ups, she completes a monthly survey about her general health through an app, and will do so for 14 months after her appointments end. She was instructed to proceed with her life as she had before the clinical trial — to continue to take “every precaution” against getting the virus, since she wouldn’t know if she’d gotten the vaccine or not. Of getting the shots themselves, Amanda says the process is intense. “You’re not allowed to look at it,” she says. “You can’t see the color. You can’t see how much is in it. You can’t see the size of the needle. You can’t see anything.” Once the injections were administered, the team sat with Amanda for two minutes to observe any reactions, and then were replaced by a separate team, who waited with her for another 30 minutes. So far, Amanda would describe her participation as a minor inconvenience, though she’s dealt with some side effects. After her first injection, on Sept. 11, she says her eyes went bloodshot within minutes of receiving it. Then, she felt like she tasted and smelled cardboard. While Amanda was in her car, preparing to make the 45-minute drive back home, her chest broke out in a blotchy, warm rash, the left side of her throat swelled, and her ears turned red and hot. Ten minutes later, she says,“it all went away like it never even happened.” That night, she got hit with a wave of chills and exhaustion, then was fine the next morning. Four days later, she woke up in the middle of the night with “the worst explosive diarrhea” she’s ever had. In the two weeks between the first and second injection, she says she didn’t have any other symptoms. The second time around, she said she felt exhausted the day of the shot, but that was about it. A few days later, she got another wave of diarrhea that resolved the next morning. She says she contacted Pfizer through the symptom-tracker app about her intense diarrhea, and was told to rest, but to notify them if things worsened or if she also developed a fever. By the next day, her diarrhea was done, and a fever never came. Pfizer’s preliminary reported side effects are fever, chills, headaches, and joint pain, which are already commonly associated with vaccination. Her compensation for going through all this? If it turns out she actually got the placebo, she’ll get the vaccine for free once it’s deemed safe. She also gets paid $120 for each of the in-person appointments she has to attend, and an additional $5 a month for completing Pfizer’s symptom survey online. But the financial benefits matter less to Amanda than the peace of mind she now feels. Though Amanda won’t know for sure whether she got the vaccine or the placebo until the final product is out, she thinks that already, she’s been protected from contracting COVID for what she believes would be a third time. She learned she had been exposed to COVID again after going to her apartment complex's pool with a number of people who had active COVID cases, but then tested negative once again. “I was perfectly fine,” Amanda says. She felt so emboldened, she says, that a few weekends later, she went to the beach and out to bars with friends. “I think it actually works.”

She is the host and creator of the Women of the Military Podcast sharing the stories of women who have served or continue to serve in the military. You can learn more about Amanda at her blog Airman to Mom. Amanda is a military spouse and veteran who served in the Air Force for six years as a Civil Engineer including a deployment to Afghanistan. She met her husband while attending college and they served on active duty together until their first son was born. It was then that she traded in her combat boots for a diaper bag to stay home. She has been published on multiple military sites and magazines, has been featured in a number of podcasts, and she was a panelist speaker at Podcast Movement in 2019. You can learn more about Amanda at her blog Airman to Mom. Key Points from the Episode with Amanda Huffman: Amanda, who was an officer in the Air Force, hosts a podcasts called “Women of the Military” to share the stories of other women veterans and build community amongst them She had been blogging after leaving the military and becoming a stay-at-home mother In 2017, she did a series on deployments, and put out a call to get people’s stories, and got those of many women telling their stories This was surprising as many female veterans did not feel comfortable sharing their stories, but when another woman asked, the response was stronger. She took the stories people shared to create a book of them called Women in the Military To keep the project going, she started interviewing those who were willing to share their stories without anonymity for her podcast She talked a lot about the feelings when you come home after serving, and finding that you couldn’t really understand what it would be like until you live it, and you realize how much of your identity the military was Amanda started her military career in ROTC while in college, with an interest to be in the military sparked in her after September 11th, which happened her senior year of high school The military gave her a purpose and alignment of beliefs that she had not had before as she had felt lost before Amanda was tasked to Afghanistan with the Army to work on roads, bridges, retaining walls and other public works projects in conjunction with the Afghan people While Amanda has been shot at, her experience with PTSD is not a result of that. It came from treatment within her base. The treatment, harassment, lies, manipulation and anger drove her PTSD. To understand why being mistreated can create PTSD, it’s important to remember the context of everyone’s lives being at risk. When Amanda was asked to do something she knew wasn’t right, the officer who requested it of her started spreading lies about Amanda in conjunction with another woman on base. There were many examples of how this played out, but the key issue being the repeated manipulation and disrespect in the context of lives being at risk At the same time, her husband also got into a masters program in Ohio, and moved there from New Mexico and bought a home while she was in Afghanistan so she came home to a home she didn’t know When she looked for help, the response was focused on whether she was suicidal, which she wasn’t When you aren’t suicidal, help becomes harder to get in the military and the response turns more to just dealing with it Today, after therapy, Amanda knows this isn’t the right approach or answer When you’re in it for so long, it’s hard to see that it can be better or that this isn’t normal, but therapy helped Amanda see that it can be better She didn’t get help until after her kids were born The switch that told her she needed help came from getting extremely, irrationally angry and knowing she can’t be that way for her kids She kept getting in the car to go her therapy group, but would talk herself out of it, and eventually decided to just drive to the meeting without allowing herself to think Once she started sharing, the flood gates opened up as she recognized she was in a community of others who were in similar places and could be supports for her from a place of understanding The cycle before was to calm down, but not talk about it again, so no progress was being made. Now it became about getting it out and talking through it. The last step of most 12 Step programs is to give back to the community, which is what the podcast is for Amanda Amanda originally thought a measure of being ok is to never get angry again What she’s come to realize is that people get angry, and that’s ok. It’s about what we do in those moments and how we handle it. The first step is to recognize that you have a problem and that it’s ok to not be ok Amanda’s story is a great reminder that we shouldn’t be comparing our difficulty to someone else’s as justification for ours not being valid or something to address because someone else’s seems worse She mentioned a book by Gary Chapman called Anger: Taming a Power Emotion, that helped her see that anger is a good thing and you can control how you use it and react Links: Website: Airmantomom.com Podcast: Women of the Military Podcast Book: Women of the Military Facebook: @airmantomon Instagram: @airmantomon Twitter: @airmantomom Subscribe to The Do a Day Podcast Keep Growing with Do a Day Get Bryan's best-selling first book,Do a Day, which is the inspiration for this show and can help you overcome your greatest challenges and achieve in life. How BDRS and SDR Should Use LinkedIn During COVID19!    The coronavirus pandemic has taken the world by storm. Many industries have been affected, even sales. How do you keep selling at this time? One of the ways is via LinkedIn. This episode will talk about how BDRs and SDRs can use the LinkedIn platform amid Covid-19.    Amanda Statton was raised in Virginia Beach and moved to Tampa about a year ago to work for BlueGrace Logistics. She started sales four years ago and she loves it. Jason Behnke is originally from Chicago and came down to Tampa to study at the University of Tampa. Right after college, he worked in sports and event sponsorship and eventually found his way to BlueGrace Logistics.    Selling in time of Covid-19 The pandemic has touched every industry.  Several manufacturing companies have shut down. People have been working from home for several weeks now but for sales and logistics, an opportunity has been created to transport products and to get help to those in need.    While Amanda and Jason are still working the same jobs, how they approach a potential customer has changed. They are  focused on building relationships, even more than ever before. These are hard times so they do what they can to reach out, see how they can help and make themselves available.    BlueGrace Logistics partners with companies and learns about their supply chain. They look for ways to help them save money and drive out costs within their network. Before Covid-19, Amanda opened a conversation by saying, ‘Hey, I would love to learn more about your supply chain. I want to see if we can help you save money to drive out costs within your network and really get a better understanding of what you're doing today.'   With Covid-19, the question has changed from wanting to know about a company's strategies to asking how the company is doing amid the pandemic and how it has impacted their organization. With that information she can then evaluate how her company can help lessen any negative impact. The focus is now helping their current clients ride the road to recovery and offering advice to prospects within the same industry who may be dealing with the same situations. Responding to inquiries People respond to these inquiries in different ways. Some people are very open to having a conversation and understand everyone is in this together. There are others who are frustrated and wonder out loud why they're still being asked sales questions even under these current circumstances.    Prospecting today  Salespeople are still prospecting, even today.  Amanda and Jason still conduct meetings from phone calls, emails, and LinkedIn outreach. They stick to these basic three because this is how people are still operating. There's still a need to work on multiple channels  to target prospects.    Amanda is also getting a number of responses and traffic from the links that she's sending over email. She's still seeing activity in clicks-to-links in emails and LinkedIn so these are the people she'll be reaching out to in the future.  People are not as receptive with the direct approach but people are still looking for authenticity. They just want the conversation at a slower pace. This means getting to know the person on a personal level. It's important for empathy to be the driver from beginning to end and plan to follow up. Make sure you are leaving on a good note.   There are various apps that you can use to keep up with the prospects including Sales Navigator but a simple , “Hey, how are you?”  works equally well. If you send out a birthday card, include a personal note. Doing this can open a dialogue and will remind the prospects there is a relationship they can look forward to.    Sharing content Like other small businesses, BlueGrace Logistics is also sharing content with manufacturing companies who are shipping right now. They are acting as a resource for these companies and put up collated information and content for industries. Their service helps their client evaluate their circumstances and adjust their business strategies as needed.   Get into casual conversations  People are staying in their homes more so prospects are more open to talking on the phone during odd hours. With most people working at home, it gives sales reps a variety of opportunities to have more casual conversations. We call this an omnichannel approach which means we can be everywhere and can talk to people at different times. Although this has always been the goal, we need to do it even more so today.     Facing the objection  Not everyone is receptive to a sales call these days and will react negatively to the approach no matter how it's done.  They may wonder why you're reaching out during a pandemic. Amanda coached her team to honestly tell them the truth when this objection comes up. She reminded them to tell their client they're interested in knowing how this pandemic has affected them so they can help ease their challenges.    BlueGrace Logistics has a very long sales cycle that can take anywhere from nine months to a year. They also have partners right now who are going through some major changes in their manufacturing. At the moment, Amanda's team is being deliberate about how they start a conversation with their partners to ensure they are willing to help in any way they can.    Being empathetic and being authentic are two of the most important traits a salesperson can develop at this time, especially on LinkedIn. Don't be scared to reach out and ask how you can help. Take advantage of LinkedIn and use its voicemail messaging.  It's the perfect vehicle for your prospects to hear the authenticity in your voice and the sincerity with which the help is being offered.    Donald shares that commenting on other peoples' content is also a good strategy for those on LinkedIn. Interacting with their posts and other members who are commenting, can launch a great conversation.    People are going through things that aren't normal life right now. If you get negativity make the next call as fast as you can. #KeepPushing   “How BDRS and SDR Should Use LinkedIn During COVID19!” episode resources As a sales rep, keep pushing through because the current circumstances won't last forever. Amanda Nicastro is a writer and actor based in NYC. In 2014, her sister Brenna needed a new kidney. While Amanda wasn’t a match, she was able to find an exchange program that allowed her to donate a kidney for someone in need, and for Brenna to receive a kidney that met her body’s needs. While Amanda isn’t the most comfortable with the idea of being a “hero” — a title often bandied about in response to her “sacrifice” — she decided to use this overwhelmingly positive response to her actions to call attention to the importance of organ donation…while also hilariously sharing the ins and outs of the kidney donation journey (such as: carrying a cooler full of her own pee through the NYC subway). She wrote the award-winning solo show I’m Just Kidneying, which takes a whimsical look at the process of living kidney donation and “pokes holes into the idea of what it takes to be ‘hero material’.” The show has toured extensively in the US, and even recently at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. As AM New York says, “She may have donated a kidney to a stranger, but Amanda Nicastro still has her funny bone.” Tune in as Amanda shares… that her sister was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome (rediagnosed as FSGS, or focal segmental glomerulosclerosis) in 4th grade that her sister has now had 2 kidney transplants, and her body has essentially reabsorbed her failing kidneys that a transplant can theoretically put FSGS into remission that Brenna’s first kidney transplant was donated by her Dad that Amanda was able to donate a kidney to a stranger’s wife, and the stranger was able to donate his kidney to Brenna — all through a living kidney donation exchange program that it was very hard for her when she discovered she wasn’t a match for Brenna; but that the donation has ultimately made them much closer that she has become an advocate since making a living organ donation that she recognizes her sister as the real “hero” in their story that in the US, someone is added to the organ donor waitlist every 10 minutes that she now speaks to her representatives in favor of organ donation and protective legislation for patients that support for organ donation legislation is bipartisan, so the foundation for support of patients and donors exists that there are limitations to provisions for organ recipients within Medicare and Medicaid, as well as through various health insurance contracts that not all transplant centers are created equal, and there is a need for standardization of care in these centers how systematic racism plays into access to medical information and treatment

Amanda de Cadenet is a force to be reckoned with. She’s had more noteworthy careers than most people achieve in a lifetime. Amanda began her career in television at the age of 15. Not for the stardom or the glamour, but out of pure necessity to support herself. The show, in which she and other presenters interviewed bands such as Nirvana and Oasis, proved to be a hit. While Amanda had found success, by the age of 22 she was ready for a change, and moved to L.A. to work as a photographer. After experiencing firsthand the frustration of being passed over time and again for photography jobs which she was qualified for, Amanda began to produce and interview women on her own show, “The Conversation.” “I’m always interested in peoples’ really low moments, because I want to know how they came back from it. Because we’re all going to have them, no one’s exempt. My question has always been, ‘well how did you get up off the ground one more time? How did you make it through that?’ Because that’s ultimately what we have to share on the other side of it.” Continuing on her quest to promote intersectional gender equality Amanda has also spearheaded the #girlgaze movement, encouraging female-identifying individuals to share their unique point of view under that hashtag in the hopes of illuminating the multifaceted jewel that is the female point of view. Today I'm speaking with Amanda Fleisher retail expert and owner of Hooray House Studio. While Amanda is in the services game now, she's been up close and personal with retail since she was a teenager.  She’s run corporate retail spaces, owned a brick and mortar by way of a pop-up shop (before pop-ups were even a thing) and has had success with online selling platforms for years. Amanda has seen it all and so, has dedicated her current business to sharing this knowledge with brick and mortar stores.  She started Hooray House as a way to support and teach business owners who might not have anyone to help them save their friends and families (and we all know that this isn't really enough). Through strategic business coaching Amanda provides people with real-life business advice designed to make their brick and mortar profitable, systemized and even more beloved by customers.   And here she is, generously sharing this advice with us today. We talk about what types of selling people respond to best, finding valuable collaborations and how Instagram can be used to snag repeat customers. She shares her tips for getting really good at "retail math" and why it's important to get comfortable with looking your numbers. Amanda shares a ton of valuable information and I loved my time nerding out with her on retail.  If you find that this conversation helps you in some way, please share it with a friend.  I would greatly appreciate your help in growing our little brick and mortar community.  Enjoy the show.

Ryan Thiessen farms four acres of vegetables in two locations at Creek Shore Farms in St. Catharines, Ontario. With 110 CSA members in the summer and 72 in the winter, as well as farmers market sales, Creek Shore Farms provides a modest living for Ryan and his wife, Amanda. While Amanda has been full time on the farm since its start in 2010, 2017 was Ryan’s first year with farming as his only job. We talk about the challenges he encountered while making the transition, and what he plans to do differently in 2018. Creek Shore Farms is highly mechanized for a farm of its scale, and Ryan shares where and how he’s made choices about mechanizing, and how he’s taken advantage of farming two properties as a way to organize what crops are raised using what methods. Ryan shares his adventures with two-wheeled Planet Junior cultivating tractors and how they revolutionized weed control at Creek Shore Farms. Perennial support for the Farmer to Farmer Podcast is generously provided by Vermont Compost Company and BCS America. Pictures, show links, and more at farmertofarmerpodcast.com/episodes/thiessen.
